Week in Review (week ending January 26th 2008)

In addition to becoming world’s manufacturing hub, it looks like China is trying to become a hub for education as well. It seems China is attracting more and more Indian students every year. Read about at it here.  Really interesting!!!.

Here is yet another example of Islamic clerics trying to stifle the freedom of expression which is a God given right to every human being. An Afghan court in northern Afghanistan sentenced  Sayed Parwiz Kambakhsh, 23 who is a journalism student to death for blasphemy for distributing an article from the Internet that was considered an insult to the Prophet Muhammad. Read about it here and here. It is just so outrageous!!!

I have come across an interesting website that voices the opinion of moderate Muslims who I believe are  the majority in the muslim community. Read this blog called  muslims against sharia run by them. It is really encouraging to see that some  courageous moderate Muslims are standing up to the religious fanatics.

In the sports news, Sharapova won Australian Open. The fifth-ranked Sharapova defeated Ana Ivanova 7-5, 6-3 Saturday for her third Grand Slam title.

In the mens semi-finals, the world number one Roger Federer lost to Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (5) on Friday, leaving the top-ranked Swiss one match short of making an 11th consecutive Grand Slam final. The world number two Rafael Nadal was crushed 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 by Jo Wilfred Tsonga who looks like Muhammad Ali and plays like Yannick Noah (the last french man to win the French Open). On Sunday, in the finals Djokovic, seeded third, will be playing the unseeded Tsonga for the Top Prize.

Other events  of last week that are worth noting are the wild swings that occurred in the stock markets all over the world.  I have never seen such wild fluctuations  in  my more than 17 years of following  the stock markets. The sensex (Mumbai stock exchange index)  has lost more than 2600 point over 2 days which is simply astounding. It subsequently gained about 1200 points in a single day which is again unbelievable.

Similarly here in the US, the Dow jones index had a 600+ point swing (from low to high) in a single day!!! Also worth noting is the emergency interest rate cut by Federal reserve before the markets opened which is unheard of. This just indicates how nervous the mood is in the stock markets world over and how worried the government is over the strength of the economy.

Here is an interesting picture of a motor cycle made from watch parts. No it does not run!!! It is just a model...

The above picture is from this website.

Where from you got the links to the so called Islam reformists? Do you belive they are moderate muslims? It is such an ugly act that some one(non-muslims) is pretending to be moderate muslims. This is so common on net, please do proper research before refering such sites. Islam doesn't need any reform, it is just being extremly misinterpreted by radical muslims and ignorant non-muslims.

It is my intention to give publicity to moderate muslims voice. In this instance the above anonymous comment was actually from a friend of mine who I have talked to after he posted the comment. He is knowledgeable in Islamic affairs and he thinks the islam reformists website in the above article is bogus and run by non-muslims. I trust his judgement and instincts and I trust he must be right about the above website. Since my original intention is to provide publicity to moderate muslim voice, I have asked him provide links to moderate muslims websites. I will publish them as soon as I get them from him.
