SpaceXs Dragon makes history with space station docking

CAPE CANAVERAL: The private company SpaceX made history with the docking of its Dragon capsule to the International Space Station the most impressive feat yet in turning routine spaceflight over to the commercial sector.

The docking Friday marked the first time a business enterprise delivered a supply ship to the space station.

Theres so much that could have gone wrong and it went right said an elated Elon Musk the young driven billionaire behind SpaceX.

This really is I think going to be recognized as a significantly historical step forward in space travel - and hopefully the first of many to come.

SpaceX still has to get its Dragon back next week with a load of science gear the retro bell-shaped capsule is designed to splash down into the ocean in the style of the Mercury Gemini and Apollo programs. But Friday was the crucial step Musk noted and NASA agreed the next SpaceX mission could come as early as September.

After a three-day flight from Cape Canaveral the Dragon closed in on the space station as two control centers - NASA in Houston and SpaceX in Hawthorne California - worked in tandem. A problem with the capsule laser-tracking system prompted SpaceX controllers to order a temporary retreat but the problem quickly was resolved.

NASA astronaut Donald Pettit used the space stations 58-foot (17.6-meter) robot arm to snare the gleaming white Dragon as the two craft soared 250 miles (400 kilometers) above Australia a day after a practice fly-by.

Looks like weve got us a dragon by the tail Pettit announced once he locked onto Dragons docking mechanism.

NASAs dressed-up controllers applauded. In contrast their SpaceX counterparts - including Musk - lifted their arms in triumph and jumped out of their seats to exchange high fives.
PAGEBREAK
The companys youthful-looking employees - the average age is 30 - were still in a frenzy when Musk took part in a televised news conference a couple hours later. They screamed with excitement as if it were a pep rally and chanted E-lon E-lon E-lon as the 40-year-old Musk wearing a black athletic jacket with the SpaceX logo described the days events.

Alcohol was banned from the premises during the crucial flight operation Musk noted ``but now that things are good I think well probably have a bit of champagne and have some fun. The crowd roared in approval.

Although cargo hauls have become routine Fridays linkup was significant in that an individual company pulled it off. That chore was previously reserved for a small elite group of government agencies.

Not only that the reusable SpaceX Dragon is designed to safely return items a huge benefit that disappeared with NASAs space shuttles. It is the first US craft to visit the station since the final shuttle flight last summer.

I think you know it but you made history today NASA Administrator Charles Bolden told the space station astronauts and everyone else involved in Fridays docking. It was an effort that will revolutionize the way we carry out space exploration.

NASA provided seed money for SpaceX - $381 million going into Tuesdays launch a small portion of the more than $1 billion that the company has invested in the effort.

Two hours after the capture the crew attached the Dragon to the space station as the congratulations poured in.

Schumacher quickest Webber on pole

MONTE CARLO: Michael Schumacher rolled back the years on Saturday with the fastest lap in qualifying for Sundays Monaco Grand Prix although Australian Red Bull driver Mark Webber will start the race from pole position.

In this season of the unexpected and the unpredictable few could have suggested that the 43-year-old German a seven-time champion who has been under fire for his poor form would have produced such a performance ahead of the seasons most glamorous race.

But he did it in astonishing fashion with a flying late lap in his Mercedes around the twisting barrier-lined street circuit to outdo the Red Bull of Webber.

It was a great lap but to little real avail because he brought a five-place grid penalty with him to the Monaco race weekend from the Spanish Grand Prix following his collision there with Brazilian Bruno Senna of Lotus.

As a result pole will be taken by Webber who posted the second fastest lap.

Schumachers best lap of 1min 14.301secs stunned his team and his rivals and he drove a lap of the circuit with one finger in the air in celebration before blowing kisses to the fans and then kissing his car.

It would have been the 69th pole position of his astonishing career and would have given him a great opportunity -- having made his comeback after a three-year retirement -- to deliver a 92nd win. But from sixth it is a different story.

Fellow German and Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg was third fastest ahead of Briton Lewis Hamilton of McLaren Frenchman Romain Grosjean of Lotus two-time champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and his team-mate Brazilian Felipe Massa.

Finn Kimi Raikkonen the 2007 champion was eighth for Lotus ahead of Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado of Williams and defending champion German Sebastian Vettel who qualified 10th for Red Bull.

Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn said of Schumachers efforts: I have to confess it took a little tear from my eye. Hes been in good shape all weekend.

It all came together in qualifying. The penalty is frustrating but thats the way it is.

Making the best of the tyres is going to be the critical thing. Thats going to be the next challenge.

Sourav Ganguly tips KKR to win IPL 5

KOLKATA: Rating Gautam Gambhir ahead of Mahendra Singh Dhoni as far as captaincy is concerned former India skipper Sourav Ganguly on Saturday put his money on Kolkata Knight Riders to win the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League.

The Indian selectors might have lost faith in Gambhir who was removed from vice-captaincy ahead of the Asia Cup but Ganguly named the Delhi opener as the skipper to lead his best XI also featuring Dhoni.

Gautam Gambhir is the best captain of the IPL. I really liked the way he supported his players. He persisted with Yusuf Pathan as he delivered his best performance (for KKR) in two years Ganguly said referring to the allrounders 21-ball 40 in their win over Delhi in the first qualifier.

The Dhoni-led Super Kings who play their third final in as many years may be the favourites on paper but Ganguly put both the teams at par and hoped the Knight Riders would win their first title in five years.

I want to wish both the teams. But I want to see a new champion. I think KKR would win this time he said.

Gambhir would be equally confident on the field. They (KKR) are a pretty balanced side and have been consistent this season. They have the players to win matches.

Ganguly however said Gambhir would not have to prove the selectors anything.

I dont think he would play with a mindset that he would have to prove something. The way they have performed this season is enough to inspire themselves for the big day tomorrow Ganguly said.

The Bengal icon however said the core CSK players could be role models for any side.

They have stuck to their side for five years with players like Dhoni Vijay Badrinath being the core of the side all these time. They can be a role model for any T20 side.

Ive always said Dhoni is unparallel in the short versions though there would always be a question mark on him when it comes to Test cricket Ganguly said.

The veteran said toss would play a crucial role at the Chepauk and also key would be the way Dhonis men tackle mystery spinner Sunil Narine.

Toss would be vital. Im sure (Gautam) Gambhir would hope to win the toss and set a target. The whole game would change if Gambhir wins the toss.

But at the same time Chennais 50 per cent job would be done if they manage to tackle Narine.

Google warns users of virus that could shut down Internet connections on July 9

Washington: Search giant Google has issued a warring to its millions of users that they could lose the ability to connect to the Internet in July due to a computer irus.

The problem began when international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected computers around the world.

In a highly unusual response the FBI set up a safety net months ago using government computers to prevent Internet disruptions for those infected users but that system will be shut down on July 9 killing connections for those people.

The FBI has run a campaign for months encouraging people to visit a website that will inform them whether they are infected and explain how to fix the problem.

After July 9 infected users wonandrsquot be able to connect to the Internet.

According to Fox News Google has now planned to throw its weight into the awareness campaign.

The site will be rolling out alerts to users via a special message that will appear at the top of the Google search results page for users with affected computers CNET reported.

andldquoWe believe directly messaging affected users on a trusted site and in their preferred language will produce the best possible resultsandrdquo wrote Google security engineer Damian Menscher in a post on the firmandrsquos blog.

andldquoIf more devices are cleaned and steps are taken to better secure the machines against further abuse the notification effort will be well worth itandrdquo he added.

According to the report the challenge and the reason for the awareness campaigns is the fact that most victims dont even know their computers have been infected although the malicious software probably has slowed their web surfing and disabled their antivirus software making their machines more vulnerable to other problems.

Garret Doherty becomes worlds fastest backwards runner for third year on trot

London: Garret Doherty can cover a mile in just over seven minutes while running backwards and has been crowned the world champion for the third year on the trot.

Doherty got hooked to the bizarre sport three years ago after turning around during a jog to avoid the sun.

He found he could run nearly as fast backwards as he could forwards and claims it has transformed his life.

andldquoBackwards running is like a drug andmdash once you start youandrsquoll never want to run forwards again. Itandrsquos truly liberating and there are enormous health benefits. Itandrsquos much better for your body than running forwards as it is lower impactandrdquo The Sun quoted Doherty as saying.

andldquoPeople usually do a double take when they see me whizzing past. Iandrsquom always getting passers-by shouting at me telling me Iandrsquom going the wrong wayandrdquo he added.

Doherty has won competitions across the UK and Ireland as well as an international contest held in Austria.

He completed the mile-long UK championship in 2010 in an impressive 7min 30sec and last month he finished the Wexford half marathon in 1hr 40min.

One example: our new tailored suggestions feature which is based on your recent visits to websites that integrate Twitter button or widgets is an experiment that were beginning to roll out to some users in a number of countries it added.

The company further explained the collection of users data across third party websites that have a Twitter button installed in its updated privacy policy The Telegraph reports.

The update to its privacy policy comes after Twitter came under fire earlier this year for copying the content of peoples entire address books from their mobile phones and storing the information on its servers without many of its users realising.
