The Differences Between Regular Nerds And Comic-Con Nerds

The word “nerd” means something much, much more extreme when it’s uttered within the walls of Comic-Con. In casual conversation, we may refer to ourselves as “nerds” simply because we’ve seen the Star Wars films dozens of times, or because we eagerly anticipate upcoming superhero films, but at Comic-Con, nerdery reaches heights that are so extreme, so specific, and so impressively arcane, Comic-Con nerds deserve their own special distinction.

I’ve posted some more pics from Comic-Con 2010 in a list below in an attempt to illustrate the distinction between “Regular Nerds” and “Comic-Con Nerds”. Follow along -

Industry Roundup: Alfred Molina Joins Law & Order Spinoff, McConaughey May Star With Swank

La La Land: Alfred Molina has joined Skeet Ulrich in NBC’s Law & Order spinoff, Law & Order: Los Angeles. Molina will play Deputy D.A. Morales and is all but assured this regular television gig will last longer than his previous one on 2002’s Bram and Alice, which - according to Wikipedia - lasted only four episodes. [Deadline]

Dream A Little Dream: Matthew McConaughey is "considering" starring opposite Hilary Swank in Dreams of a Dying Heart. Swank is set to play a solider in the film who returns home from a tour of duty to encounter “strange goings on.” Perhaps what’s giving McConaughey pause is the fact that he can’t figure out how a serious Hilary Swank film will give him a chance to take off his shirt. [Deadline]

Mamma Mia: Chuck creators/executive producers Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak announced at Comic-Con that Linda Hamilton of Terminator fame will be joining the cast of Chuck in a “heavily recurring role” in the NBC’s show’s fourth season. She’ll play the “long-missing mother” of Chuck (Zachary Levi), whose past is “shrouded in secrets.” Let’s hope things work out better for this Josh Schwartz Chuck than they did for Chuck Bass when his long-lost "mother" returned on Gossip Girl. [Deadline]

Boys Club
: Funny or Die co-founder Adam McKay (Anchorman, The Other Guys) confirmed at Comic-Con that he will be directing The Boys, an adaptation of Garth Ennis' violent comic series. The series follows a government squad known as “The Boys” who are tasked with watching over superheroes and “keeping them in line.” This makes us wonder what McKay's daughter Pearl's up to nowadays. [Heat Vision/HR]

WB Takes A Dare: Warner Bros. is close to making a deal on Dan Dare, a British film with Sam Worthington attached to star. Dare - a space fleet pilot - came onto the scene in the 1950s in a comic book, before the character later appeared on British radio and television programs. Worthington clearly has a thing for space-based franchises. [Variety]

Sticks And Stones: Dannah Phirman and Danielle Schnieder have been signed to adapt Todd Harris Goldman’s book Boys Are Stupid, Throw Rocks at Them. Apparently the script will include original music, as well - though they could probably just raid the catalogues of Pink, Avril Lavigne or Ke$ha and be just fine. [Variety]

Your Box Office Explained: While Salt Couldn't Top Inception, Angelina Jolie's Still an Action Star

THE WEEKEND'S WINNERS: Warner Bros.'s Inception; Sony’s Salt.

THE WEEKEND'S LOSERS: Disney synergy.

HOW IT ALL WENT DOWN: Thanks to moviegoers’s determination to go back to Inception as many times as it took to figure out just what the hell happened, attendance at Christopher Nolan’s film fell by less than a third in its second weekend; that’s about half of the typical drop for a big blockbuster. It was good enough to top the box office for the second week in a row, taking in an estimated $43.5 million (for a total of $143.6 million), besting the nearly $37 million taken in by Salt in its first weekend.

Though it couldn’t overtake Inception, Salt was still a success. For months, Sony had been trying to build up the film as that rarest of Hollywood commodities: an action flick anchored by a woman that still appeals to guys. To ensure that dudes showed up, Columbia launched an ambitious online game campaign, www.dayXexists.com, back in May. Dudes love video games! But whether Sony had succeeded in attracting men was still an open question even 24 hours before the film opened: On Thursday, 45% of young women (those under 25) polled expressed “definite interest” in seeing the film, compared with just 35% of older men (those over 25), according to a confidential tracking report shared by a studio exec.

(Perhaps this differential was party attributable to Howard Stern acolytes being dissuaded by the tweets of Robin Quivers. She spent the last week sending anti-Salt messages in a fit of feminist — or is it anti-antifeminist? — pique: “Aren't we tired of women pretending to be men?” “We haven't seen a powerful female on screen since Kathleen Turner in Body Heat.” “Hey Angie, wouldn't it be more exciting and dangerous to be Mati Hari (sic) than Tom Cruise?” and ‘Why is Angelina Jolie playing like a boy when she of all people knows how to weild (sic) the power of a woman?”)

In the end, though, both women and men found Salt savory: 47% of the film’s crowds were male; 53% female.

Meanwhile, Fox, which had been suffering its worst summer of recent memory with dogs like Marmaduke, The A-Team and Knight and Day, finally had something to cheer about...kind of. Ramona and Beezus, based on the beloved Beverly Cleary chestnut, opened with $8 million. While it's not that impressive on the surface, the film cost only $15 million to make — probably less than what Sony spent on diet Snapple for Angelina Jolie's nannies — so it's on the way to making money; hey, a win's a win! We have to ask, though why Disney Channel starlet Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place) had to make her first theatrical feature film for Fox instead of Disney when she is such a potent draw for ‘tween girls: 75% of those who showed up to Beezus were female; 57% were under the age of 25.

Joshua Jackson Holds "Pacey-Con"

While the throngs of costumed fanboys and fangirls waited in endless lines to get a glimpse of their favorite stars over the weekend at Comic-Con, a decidedly more subdued gathering was taking place on a lawn nearby the convention center: Pacey-Con. Fringe’s Joshua Jackson - who, of course, played Pacey Witter on Dawson’s Creek for the show's six seasons - staged an event in honor of both his character and the show. Jackson handed out fan fiction he apparently wrote himself and took pictures with adoring female fans while the Creek theme music blared from a boom box (good luck trying to get that out of your head now). And from the looks of it, Jackson decided to dress like Pacey, too. [ONTD]

Crime In New York City Isn't Correlated With Heat

Though conventional wisdom has it that crime rates increase during the summer months, the Wall Street Journal explains that, after reviewing the data, they've concluded New Yorkers are “about as likely to be victims of crime in December and October as they are during the hottest of the summer months." (So now you are justified in being a paranoid neurotic 365 days a year!) While the experts said they couldn't come up with an explanation for the October crime spike, they had some thoughts about the December jump. Explained criminology professor Jerome McKean: “We always get a little mini bump in December... people sometimes do their Christmas shopping without paying for it."

Mad Men Season Premiere Recap: Stage Fright

"Who is Don Draper?" These are the first words of season four, spoken by an Advertising Age reporter about the face of the "scrappy upstart" agency, Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. It's an echo of oh-so-many such questions since the show began. Last season started off with the ultimate "Who is Don Draper" in a dirty-joke flashback, when we found out how Dick Whitman got his real name. This premiere yields no flashbacks at all (phew) but instead shoves the story forward. Now it's November 1964, just about a year after Don was asked, "And who are you supposed to be?" while trick-or-treating. The gangs-all-here feel makes for a satisfying sort of reunion show, but in many ways, it's also a show about role-playing: How Don's most challenging creative account is his constant performance and spin — the brand management of himself. Seeing that his old answer to "Who is Don Draper" has become obsolete, Don, and the show, are refreshing and rebranding. Welcome to the reboot.

The last, very busy episodes of season three ejected the British, offed JFK, launched the SCDP, and detonated the Drapers' marriage. The overriding vibe, with its fizzy cocktail-music soundtrack, is mostly bouncy and upbeat: it picks up where the fan-bait wish-fulfillment of last season's finale left off. (All that JFK-assassinating, Rome-burning, gay-bashing dread has been pushed back into the shadows for now). There's a bright new logo on the clean glass doors of the new, smaller office. There's less dark wood, no conference table, and a few fresh faces too. Peggy's lost the bangs, Joan's running a tight ship, Pete's conniving, vests are proliferating, and the secretarial pool is wearing more teal and mustard yellow than we saw all last season. Thankfully, Roger's wiseacre rimshot act is still killing everyone. ("So cheap they couldn't even afford a whole reporter!")

SCDP has fewer accounts and a small margin for error — and Draper needs to put up or shut up: J'ai a'lai is a bust, Jansen swimsuits is a dead-end, and Pete and Peggy have to pull off a stunt behind Don's back to hold onto the Sugarberry ham account. ("I can use my expense account," Pete says, "I'll just say it's for whores!") Peggy seems more confident than ever, and she's still speaking the obvious truths about the office ("We are all here because of you — all we want to do is please you") and coming up with brilliant ideas. But no more Monte Christo sandwiches with Duck? A fiancé? Whaa? She does get her actors to play their roles — only, the ladies can't just fake the fight. The roles become them, the passion turns real, and the two end up in jail. Is this foreshadowing of how the other play-acting will play out?

But this is really Don's episode. At the office, he looks the part, talking the talk — but he's not really getting new accounts. Being the face of the company adds new responsibilities. And as you may recall from last season, Bert Cooper wondered if Don had "the stomach for the realities" of starting his own business. It seems like Don, despite his radical rhetoric, is still playing things "safe and comfortable" at the episode's outset, without the nerve to get "risky and rich." By the end, it seems like he's got nothing left to lose — and that could make him dangerous.

At home, Don's apartment is almost comically depressing: all dark shadows, shoe polish, ugly furniture, and TV static. In last season's premiere, Don effortlessly picked up a stewardess and seemed practically exhausted by being such an awesome Don Juan. (“I keep going different places, and always winding up where I’ve already been,” he groaned, as he groped.) Now he's divorced, which is much less attractive in 1964 than being a hot married dude. And Don doesn't just desire these women now; he needs them. It's both cute and desperate when he shines his shoes and makes his bed, hoping to bring Jane's blonde gal-pal Bethany home. "I'm breaking a lot of my rules by seeing a divorced man," she says, wise to his tricks, then leaves him hanging in the taxi.

Don's trying to figure out his new part, but Bethany senses the drama. She's a supernumerary — one of those actors who fill the stage in someone else's story at the opera, who never gets to sing or speak a word. Is she playing a Betty?

Don's old lines aren't working — not with women or reporters. And Don's old persona — "a man from a town with no name … a handsome cipher," as the AdAge reporter writes — is over. He has to create something new. "Turning a creative success into business is your work," says Bert Cooper. "And you've failed."

After striking out with Bethany, Don calls over a buxom redheaded escort, pays her, and then tells her not to take off that brassiere. "I know what you want," she says. "So do it," he replies. And she slaps him while riding him. Don's still in control, but he wants to play the submissive role. What does he need to be punished for? And, more importantly, can you think of a serious mainstream television show in which a leading man has been even somewhat submissive? (As anything other than a punch line, that is?) Could this be TV's first major S&M relationship?

The escort is a little Betty Page — and a lot Joan (She's certainly not a Marilyn or a Jackie). As one of the only other redheads on the show, and as an in-control, powerful, buxom woman, it clearly makes you wonder if Don might admire Joan's persona for more than professional reasons.

And then there's Betty, who looks the part of perfect wife and mother but can't quite play it. Her neuroses are already turning off Henry so much that he actually refuses sex with her ("I'm really full now … "). The mother-in-law understandably hates her. ("She’s a silly woman.") Worse, when Henry and Betty do have sex, it's almost like a flashback to Joan's rape. Henry is most keyed up just after Don leaves the home. Sex, in this episode, is very much about male power — one alpha upping the other. Will it last after Henry realizes that Don doesn't care anymore?

If Henry and Betty's relationship does devolve quickly, will Betty beg to get Don back? There seems to be nothing left but hatred between them, so probably not. But she needs money and doesn't want to leave her home. Betty holds two chips: the kids, and Don's true identity. For years, Don kept a low profile to minimize the risk of his deception. Now that Don's playing the part of a flashy media darling, Betty could use that knowledge to hurt him. Will she blackmail him? Will there be a war?

One more question: Why kick off season four with a supermarket ham stunt and an arty TV ad for GloCoat? At the risk of overreaching, let's note that in 1964, pop art (which has barely touched this show) was booming and the Factory was roaring — as were all those questions about the differences, or lack thereof, between art and products. At about the same time as this episode — between October 6 and November 7, 1964 — the Bianchini Gallery on the Upper East Side of Manhattan was hosting the landmark American Supermarket exhibit, where multiples by Robert Indiana, Roy Lichtenstein, Claus Oldenberg, Robert Rauschenberg, and others were installed as if they were for sale in a grocery store. For two bucks, you could buy shopping bags silkscreened with Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup can. For $6, you could get your very own autographed can. And there was a massive meat cooler installed with hand-painted wax meats, including ham. Warhol once said, "Lock up a department store today, open the door after a hundred years, and you will have a museum of art." (Lock up an office in 1964, then pop it open on AMC in 2010, and, with a lot of creative license, you've got quality TV.)

In some ways, Don's ad for GloCoat is an inversion of the American Supermarket exhibit — it's his way of taking art-house filmmaking into a TV commercial. But Don's GloCoat campaign could also be read as something more personal — a kind of autobiography. "For the first 30 seconds at least." He dreamed up the image of a little boy, trapped in a romantic, nostalgic dream of the wild west ("Get me out of here!"), saved only by an angelic blonde mother figure — the kind he never had but keeps looking for, in Bettys and Bethanys. Wonder why?

Sitting down with that Wall Street Journal reporter, Don spins a fantasy that echoes that little boy's wild-west dream. "I could die of boredom," he says, "or I could holster up my guns …" Last season, it seemed like Don was facing up to reality, but here he's still a kid who prefers to live in fantasy, to buy the myths he sells. This season, maybe he's just trading one fictional role for another, more exciting one.

Glee To Feature Rocky Horror-Themed Episode, Potentially A Brittany-Santana Kiss

Even though Glee has absolutely no connection to comic books or science fiction, its overzealous fan base of geeky Gleeks is probably as die-hard as any Trekkie or Thor fanatic (well, maybe not quite as die-hard). In any event, the Glee panel was Sunday’s major event at Comic-Con, with creator Ryan Murphy and a number of the show’s cast (Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison and Jane Lynch were conspicuously absent) fielding questions and offering spoilers about the show's second season.

The major news immediately followed Emmy nominee Chris Colfer’s comment that the song he would most like the chance to sing on the show is “The Time Warp”; Murphy then announced that Colfer's dreams would be coming true (how Glee!) as season two will feature a Rocky Horror-themed episode. Other nuggets revealed: the Britney Spears-themed episode will be “hallucinogenic”; Tina’s going to dump wheelchair-bound Artie for dancing hottie Mike Chang; both Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth will be back; and, Murphy said, fan favorites Santana and Brittany may be kissing in an upcoming episode. This last piece of news led Naya Rivera (Santana) to explain the duo would like to go by the couple name of "Santitney." Uhh, somehow we don't think that's going to catch on, Naya.

Howard Dean Lashes Out at Fox News... During An Appearance On Fox News

Former DNC chair Howard Dean appeared on Fox News Sunday with Newt Gingrich this morning to chat about last week's headline-dominating Shirley Sherrod controversy. And Dean did not hold back whatsoever when providing his take on the channel's role in the saga which cost Sherrod her job.

"Fox News did something that was absolutely racist," Dean said. "They had an obligation to find out what was really in the clip. They had been pushing a theme of black racism with this phony Black Panther crap and this business and this Sotomayor and all this other stuff. The Tea Party called out their racist fringe and I think the Republican Party’s got to stop appealing to its racist fringe. And Fox News is what did that. You put that on. Continuing to cater to this theme of minority racism and stressing comments like this — some of which are taken out of context — does not help the country knit itself together."

Host Chris Wallace got understandably defensive ("I know facts are inconvenient things!" he interjected) and maintained that Fox waited to broadcast footage until Sherrod had already been fired by the USDA. Dean wasn't about to back down though, arguing the video "was about to go on Glenn Beck, which is what the administration was afraid of."

New Jersey Governor Tries To Pass Off Blame For Jersey Shore Kids To New York

The man who inexplicably doesn't want to be associated with The Situation.

With the return of Jersey Shore days away, the popular sport of Shore-bashing was back in a big way this weekend. First there was Cathy Horyn’s oddly mean-spirited Snooki take-down in The Times. And then Sunday, New Jersey governor Chris Christie joined the chorus of haters when asked by This Week’s Jake Tapper if the reality show's popularity was positive or negative for his state.

"It takes a bunch of New Yorkers… drops them at the Jersey shore, and tries to make America feel like this is New Jersey,” he said. "The Jersey shore is a beautiful place, and it's a place that everybody should come on vacation."

Thankfully none of this trash-taking is likely to diminish Snooki’s orange-hued shine. As she recently told Rolling Stone: “I get off on [on the haters]. Because the only reason why people talk negative is because they're jealous.” That’s our girl.

Thousands of Secret Military Documents Released, Offer Grim Depiction of Afghan Effort

Gen. Petraeus has his work cut out for him.

Thanks to website WikiLeaks, more than 90,000 U.S. military reports about the war in Afghanistan - filed between 2004 and January 2010 - are now available for public consumption. In what is being called “one of the biggest leaks in U.S. military history,” the site released the material to the New York Times, The Guardian and German newspaper Der Spiegel weeks ago, under the condition that they would wait until Sunday to report on it. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange described the reports as “the total history of the Afghan war from 2004 to 2010, with some important exceptions -- U.S. Special Forces, CIA activity and most of the activity of other non-U.S. groups.”

The extensive findings paint a bleak picture of the conflict in Afghanistan, and offer a few notable and previously unreported facts, most significantly that there have been devastating, unknown civilian losses due to both Taliban and coalition forces (consisting primarily of "all of these people being killed in the small events that we haven't heard about that numerically eclipse the big casualty events.") Additionally, the files cite the use of remote-control predator drones against the Taliban, as well as a secret group of soldiers charged with killing Taliban members covertly without a trial.

How WikiLeaks got its hands on the reports remains a mystery (Assange claims the site has never fallen for a forgery). Of course, the White House is not exactly pleased. The administration has already issued a condemnation of the disclosure, arguing it “put the lives of Americans and our partners at risk” (a claim the Times refutes in the preamble to its reportage.) The administration also made sure to note that these documents cover a span of years during which George W. Bush was president, a time before “President Obama announced a new strategy with a substantial increase in resources for Afghanistan, and increased focus on al-Qaida and Taliban safe havens in Pakistan, precisely because of the grave situation that had developed over several years.”

Unintentional 'Girls Gone Wild' Flasher Loses Lawsuit

Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis.

When she was twenty, one "Jane Doe" found herself at a St. Louis bar where "Girls Gone Wild" was filming. Does this mean she wanted to appear topless on video? No, it doesn't, as evidenced by the fact that she can be heard saying, "No, no," on tape, right before another woman pulled her top down for her, seemingly against her will. Now that Jane Doe is married with kids and a friend of her husband's identified her in one of the videos, she tried to sue, but a Missouri jury has now rejected Doe's claims that her reputation was unfairly damaged as a result of the experience. What thought, exactly, swayed this jury against Doe? "Through her actions, she gave implied consent," Tim O'Brien, jury foreman, said. "She was really playing to the camera. She knew what she was doing." Wow. And that, ladies, is why you should probably just run if you see Girls Gone Wild filming.

Comic-Con Round-Up: Ryan Reynolds on The Green Lantern Going Glove-less; Natalie Portman on Thor

In San Diego right now, Natalie Portman, Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, and Scarlett Johansson might all be mingling together! Perhaps having a cocktail, and sharing amusing anecdotes about fans. Anyway, all the buzz about their projects, below.

• Harrison Ford came onstage during the Cowboys & Aliens panel, walking out in handcuffs for a gag that didn't go over that well, because somebody at Comic Con had actually been arrested the day before. "Ford answered only one question, pertaining to whether he ever anticipated becoming a celebrity. 'No, I just wanted to make a living as an actor,' Ford said. 'I didn’t know about all of this,' referencing the 6,000 ecstatic fans in the audience." [PopWatch/EW]

Family Guy will spoof Return of the Jedi soon. [Heat Vision/THR]

The Green Lantern still has a few more weeks of shooting. Peter Sarsgaard had never read the comics before being cast. Ryan Reynolds said the team tried to find "a happy medium" between keeping longtime fans happy and "introducing" his character to a new generation. His suit is "like a biological manifestation of the ring," so that's why it looks the way it does. So where are the white gloves? "He's not a valet parking attendant in Tokyo," Reynolds said. Oh, and Blake Lively would "create Disney Land" for herself "everywhere," if she had The Green Lantern's powerful ring. [PopWatch/EW]

• At the Thor panel, Natalie Portman said "she really wanted to do a big effects movie that emphasized character, and getting to do it with Branagh was a new way of approaching it." (As opposed to with George Lucas, she may be implying.) [Deadline]

The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner will also star in The Avengers, playing Hawkeye. [PopWatch/EW]

Harry Crane Wants More Scenes With Joan Holloway

PopEater asked Rich Sommer, who plays Mad Men's Harry Crane, who he'd want more screen time with. In a long-winded explanation, he said Joan, revealing that the two will have a scene together tonight:

"It's hard for me to answer this question, obviously, because it can give away if I have or haven't had time with anyone yet this season - we're now ten episodes in - and that's a lot of information that would be communicated by that question. I think it's safe to say that any scene with anyone, it's a different dynamic any time you do a scene. I loved the stuff I got to do with Christina Hendricks [Joan Holloway] in season two with 'A Night to Remember' when she was reading those scripts. She's just so good. She and I have a short, albeit fun, little scene in the premiere."

Only a few more hours! And if you're in New York, you can catch tonight's Mad Men on a big screen in Times Square, where AMC is hosting the premiere at the northern triangle between 46th and 47th Streets. Last time we looked out the window, it was pouring, but if you're a real fan, and into watching TV shows while surrounded by strangers, perhaps you'll stick it out.

Lindsay Lohan Is Being Mocked By Fellow Inmates

Lindsay Lohan has reportedly been brought to tears in jail (pictured), because her inmates have been calling her "fire crotch." This actually sounds awful, made even worse by the dubious tale of her inmates "chanting" this nickname while she lays in her cell. One recently-released inmate explained: "Lindsay didn't say nothing. She was crying though." Apparently the other girls are sick of seeing the starlet receive special treatment: "Like if she even moves, they put the whole facility on lockdown. It happens all the time," a relative of an inmate explained. But with each teardrop she sheds, we know Lohan will come out of jail any day now, lessons, uh, learned the hard way: by being called a fire crotch. That'll teach 'er. [Gothamist, NYDN, People]

Anna Chapman Meets With Vladimir Putin, Sings to Live Music

V.P., sympathetic leader.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin had a chance to meet with the spies who returned to Mother Russia this month. They just, you know, caught up, made small-talk, he explained: "I met them. We talked about life. We sang, not karaoke, but to live music. We sang From What the Motherland Begins," which is apparently a song about spying. "I'm not joking, I am serious," he said. Anna Chapman and her crew apparently didn't have too much news to report back after ten years spying for Putin, but he had nothing but sing-a-longs and sympathy for them. "I have no doubts they will have interesting, bright lives," he said. Sounds like a fun boss! [NYP]

Comic-Con: Let Me In Actress Chloe Moretz Still Hasn’t Seen Let the Right One In

Chloe Moretz at Comic-Con.

Let Me In director Matt Reeves told us yesterday that finding young actors unfamiliar with the film's source material, the Swedish vampire movie Let the Right One In, would be key to "pulling off the [film's] emotional complexity." At the Let Me In panel today, the adorable Chloe Moretz admitted that, even now, she still hasn't seen all of the original: "My mom won't let me watch the whole film," she said, adding that her mother screens her scripts before handing them off to her. Reeves said he asked Steven Spielberg for advice on working with such young actors, and Spielberg told him: "Let them come up with stuff that makes you choose what you're going to do, and have them keep a journal in character."

Moretz didn't shield her eyes, however, when a clip from Let Me In was screened: Set in the eighties, it featured the characters Owen and Abby on a date at an arcade. (Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" scores the scene, fittingly.) Outside, in the snow, Abby asks Owen the infamous line from the original: “Would you still like me even if I wasn't a girl?”
