The studio has set a December 21, 2011 release date for the David Fincher-directed movie, and is continuing talks with Daniel Craig to star as publisher Michael Blomkvist (Deadline says there may be a “scheduling problem”). Meanwhile, Sony has signed test deals with a cadre of young actresses interested in the Salander role, including Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), Sara Snook (Sleeping Beauty), Rooney Mara (The Social Network) and Sophie Lowe (Blame), according to Deadline. Also in the mix are a number of high-profile names, such as Carey Mulligan, Ellen Page, and Mia Wasikowska. No doubt all of the actresses have been studying Die Antwoord videos on YouTube before they test. [Deadline, Variety] Ageless Beauty: Andy Tennant (The Bounty Hunter) will direct Katherine Heigl in the fantasy romance Adaline about a “beautiful woman who hasn’t aged for 100 years” and “meets a man who may risk his life to help her regain her mortality.” Hey Andy, try doing the opposite of everything you did on The Bounty Hunter and hopefully things will work out! [HR] Temp Gets A Deal: B.J. Novak has made a deal with Universal Media Studios to keep him on board The Office as an actor, writer and producer through its seventh and eighth seasons. The agreement also will allow him to field new projects for the studio. Novak's probably being bombarded tonight with congratulatory Woofs. [Variety] Cruise Control: David Guion and Michael Handelman, who wrote the upcoming Dinner For Schmucks, have signed on to both write and direct Cruise of the Gods, a remake of the 2002 BBC comedy about a fan cruise held in honor of The Children of Castor, a “fictitious 1980s post apocalyptic sci-fi TV series.” The cast apparently has "mixed feelings, specifically dependent on whose career stalled with the series, and who went on to bigger and better things." Sounds like a VH1 special but made up and on a boat. [Deadline] Strange Indeed: Cole Haddon will write the screenplay for a big screen adaptation of The Strange Case of Hyde, a “fresh take” on the classic Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde tale. In this version, the “split personality [is the] center of a Victorian-era action-adventure that sees him go head-to-head against a historical villain.” Hadden seems enthused by the challenge: "I'm excited to be playing a part in restoring him to his proper place in the pantheon of movie monsters: at the top of the food chain." [Heat Vision/HR] Hugo Gets Bigger: Emily Mortimer and Michael Stuhlbarg have joined the cast of Hugo Cabret, Martin Scorsese’s 3D family adventure film based on the Brian Selznick best-selling novel. Mortimer will play a flower shop girl named Lisette and Stuhlbarg a film restorer named Rene Tabard. Positively charming. Knowing Lou was probably not dead and more likely a heart-attack survivor (and of course we were right — seriously, how could this show go on without John Scurti?), we looked forward to what “Breakout” would bring — and we’re pleased to see that, four episodes in, Rescue Me is digging into some meatier material. Motivated as usual by the desire to win the cook-off with their West Side rivals — which has just been moved up a week, thanks to the news that chef Lou is out of commission — the men of 62 Truck hatch a plan to get Lou out of the hospital. A great deal of hilarity ensues, mostly in the form of a firehouse debate as to whether Black Shawn or (Puerto Rican) Franco is more believable as a doctor, and of course not all goes according to plan, but there’s a silver lining to just about every mishap. Damian decides against going with the crew in favor of a date with rival firefighter Penny, which allows us to see a bit of humanity in the twerp: He reveals that he always thought his dad didn’t like him because he didn’t show enough interest in the job. Franco’s doctor act doesn’t go entirely smooth, but the lady doctor who smells a rat gets his number instead. Most important, Garrity runs into Pat Malone — another ground-zero veteran with cancer, except his, unlike Garrity’s, is lingering and slowly killing him — and their scenes together make for some of the best in the episode. We’re consistently impressed by Steven Pasquale’s ability to shift seamlessly between Cro-Magnon idiot and believably sensitive, upstanding guy, and his moment defending the decision to break Pat out of the hospital — and his ensuing decision to take him back — is a powerful one. Also knocking us a for a loop this week: one of the best Tommy and Lou scenes yet, in which we find out that Lou, too, caught a glimpse of the other side during his heart attack — except he appears to have seen the polar opposite of what Tommy did (his mom, cupcakes, tender gestures, instead of “zombies, fear, burning”), i.e., heaven. He states point blank what we already know, but what apparently shocks Tommy: Lou’s the better person, and Tommy obviously saw the hell he’s headed for if he doesn’t shape up, especially in the fathering department. We’re generally pleased with the development of supporting characters this week, but we’re also happy to see just about the right amount of focus on Tommy. It’s not until the last segment of the episode that we see much of Mr. Gavin, but the scenes feel particularly resonant. Tommy goes to Father Phil — played by Peter Gallagher as a charming combo of daffy, passive aggressive, regular guy, and wise — in search of answers and an easy way out of his troubles. Instead, he gets a reiteration of Lou’s lesson (he saw hell) and a directive to focus on what solidifies his all-over-the-place life: his family. Speaking of which, Janet and Franco almost kiss but don’t, even though their guilty faces have Tommy convinced the worst happened. Like many times before, we’re left with a dialogue-free scene of Tommy drinking alone, this time in his car with the top-shelf whiskey Mick and Teddy left. And for once, this feels less like an opportunity for us to wince at Leary’s weathered mug than to contemplate what must be going on in Tommy’s head. What happens when a firefighter has to face his own mortality and fallibility? It’s a theme past Rescue Me seasons have touched on, but this episode has us hoping season six will actually be the one to truly and compellingly explore it. Or at least that seemed like a fine game plan until the mother of his child, Oksana Grigorieva, accused him of physical abuse to her and his baby, and released recordings of phone calls that purportedly show him crazily gasping to fill his lungs in order to more effectively call her three nasty names over and over again. Now, Summit finds itself what’s the technical term they use in Hollywood? Oh yes: superfucked. Execs at the company privately admit that even they don’t know what to do with the Jodie Foster-directed movie, the story of a depressed man who suffers a psychotic break when his family abandons him, and becomes best friends with a beaver hand puppet that he imbues with an alternate personality with a British accent. One Summit suit calls the situation “unprecedented.” So what are their options? We’ve laid them out below, and as you’ll see, none of them are good. OPTION 1: Send The Beaver Directly to DVD. Why it could work: The Beaver might never earn back from theaters what it would cost to market the movie in the first place, so why not go to DVD, where you don’t have the huge publicity costs to make up for? Why that will never work: First, going straight to video sends audiences a message that the film is in the same league with cheapo junk like American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile. For another, you can’t count on home video the way you used to for ancillary profits. The Los Angeles Times today reports that for the first half of the year, DVD sales were down about 15%, while DVD rental spending declined nearly 5% — thanks to a 55% jump in revenue at $1 per night kiosks like Red Box. OPTION 2: Market The Beaver as a Jodie Foster Film, Not a Mel Gibson Movie. Why it could work: Everybody loves Jodie Foster! She’s an American institution! And who doesn’t remember Little Man Tate fondly? Why it will never work: Yes, Foster directed, and played his wife. But insiders tell us Gibson is in 90% of the scenes in the movie, making it all but impossible to hide his involvement. What are you gonna do, kick him out of the poster? Look at how well that worked with Tom Cruise and Knight and Day. OPTION 3: Sell The Beaver as a "Message Movie" about Mental Illness and Have Mel Publicly Say He Is, in Fact, Mentally Ill Why it could work: Imagine all the interviewers asking, “Mel, have you ever felt like you were going crazy?” Then he could make a little joke, “Whatever could you be talking about?” then everyone chuckles, and he leans forward and says, “But seriously, mental illness affects everyone, as you see in this movie. Heck, it even happens to movie stars. And thank goodness I was able to get help. Everyone’s not so lucky.” Why it will never work: Gibson recently lost his longtime agent and trusted confidant, Ed Limato, to lung cancer, and was promptly cut loose by Limato’s former agency, William Morris Endeavor. Without Limato, who was well-known for his straight-talk with clients, Gibson seems bereft of the professional advice that might preserve his career: He seems genuinely committed to the idea that he can still win custody of his youngest child and consumed with hatred for its mother. Plus, when it comes to audiences's empathy for mental illness, there is a big difference between the clinically depressed and people who bellow “I DESERVE TO BE BLOWN!” Why it could work: Summit insiders (unsurprisingly) say that the Gibson film is quite good. (It’s not impossible: Wagner, after all, was a racist and an anti-Semite, but no one is suggesting The Ring Cycle wasn’t a mammoth operatic achievement.) The script by Kyle Killeen (creator of Fox’s buzzy new fall show, Lone Star) topped the 2008 Black List, the annual list of best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. And the Motion Picture Academy loves Foster: She has been nominated for four Oscars, and won two, and the fact that she’s been acting for 41 years means they look at her like proud parents, even though she’s 47. Why it will never work: Audiences stayed away in droves from Gibson’s last starring vehicle, Edge of Darkness, and that was before he allegedly punched the mother who was holding his child. And while Foster has won both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress Academy Awards, she’s never been nominated for her directing, even for Little Man Tate. And let’s say, miracles of miracles, it becomes an Oscar contender. That’s hardly a box office indicator: Despite The Hurt Locker being named last year’s Best Picture, Summit still only managed to squeeze an extra $1.7 million out of audiences after the Oscars. OPTION 5: Put the Film on the Shelf Until the Moment Is Right. Why it’s the best option: Scientists predict that in the year 2843, the human race will be overtaken by a race of cyborgs with the prime directive that they deserve to be blown. And they will need a summer tentpole. Sadly, in classic “ahead of its time” fashion, no one watched the show and it was canceled after nine short weeks of production. That said, the point here is that we’ve always been huge fans of his here at VH1. What does this have to do with the price of rice in China? Well, just last night, our friends over in VH1 News caught up with our old buddy Zach on the red carpet for his new flick co-starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, Dinner For Schmucks. In the clip above, he confesses his secret trick for turning his face red on cue (hint: heroin!) and also whips out his iPhone in an attempt to calculate how much time he spent on set improvising. Maine's Republican mavericks, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, joined every Democrat except for Nebraska's Ben Nelson, including brand-new temporary senator Carte Goodwin, to get the bill through. Christian Lacroix's new designer, Sacha Walckhoff, who now helms the label without Lacroix, is trying to pull the company out of debt and modernize it a bit. Many high-end designers looking to stay current and get a bunch of free mass marketing collaborate with mass retailers like Target. Walckhoff isn't opposed to the idea. He told the Huffington Post:

Source: Best Week Ever | 20 Jul 2010 | 3:18 pm Black USDA Official Was So Racist to White Farmer That They Became ‘Friends for Life’![]() Only days after the NAACP passed a resolution condemning racist elements in the tea-party movement, the right returned fire by bringing to light racism within the federal government and the NAACP. Sort of, maybe. It all started a couple of days ago when Andrew Breitbart's Big Government website posted a video of Shirley Sherrod, Georgia's director of rural development for the Department of Agriculture, telling a story at an NAACP dinner in March of 2010. In the clip, Sherrod, who is black, admits to not helping a white farmer as much as she could have when she worked for the Federation of Southern Cooperative/Land Assistance Fund 24 years ago.
But as is often the case with anything that turns up on the Internet, things may not be as they appear. Shocking, right? Sherrod, for one, claims that her remarks were taken completely out of context.
So the speech was really about why her racist feelings were wrong? We will probably find out soon enough. Andrew Breitbart says he never had possession of the complete speech, but the owner of company that shot it, while refusing to release it to the media until he gets permission from the NAACP, tells Talking Points Memo "that the full speech is exactly as Sherrod described, and that she goes on to explain learning the error of her initial impression and helping the farmer keep his farm." Pfff. If she helped the white farmer keep his farm, then he and his wife would probably be publicly defending Sherrod right about now, wouldn't they?
Oh, okay then. The NAACP has apparently recanted its condemnation of Sherrod and launched an investigation. Maybe an investigation is something that Vilsack (and, possibly, the White House) should have done before just taking the word of Andrew Breitbart. Russia is like the Christopher Nolan of animal cruelty, in that love it or hate it, you have to admit it’s pretty genius. And perhaps no other group of sentences in the history of words better explains why we’ll probably be visiting Russia sometime soon: Stunned beachgoers said the animal had brayed in fear as it whistled through the air, causing children to burst into tears. Source: Best Week Ever | 20 Jul 2010 | 3:04 pm Retailers Seem Afraid to Talk About Bedbugs![]() After a small bedbug infestation in the Victoria's Secret on Lexington Avenue was made public last week, more shoppers are looking for reassurance. Stores that want to sell us things should be able to ensure their stores are bedbug-free — right? WWD tried to investigate what kinds of preventative measures retailers are taking against the vermin. Lord & Taylor said they haven't found any bugs but have increased the frequency of exterminations to once a week. Bergdorf Goodman said they are "currently in the process of formulating a plan." But other stores contacted by WWD, including Saks, Bloomingdale's, Ralph Lauren, Gap, and J.Crew declined to comment. Naturally, fashion companies — especially the most luxurious ones — don't want to be associated with something gross like bedbugs. No one wants to even call to mind the image of bringing home a pet bedbug in a brand new $12,000 fur-trimmed handbag. But some shoppers are freaked out. Some shoppers are afraid to go into the wild world of carpeted stores full of wooden shelves and knit sweaters and so many things made of fabric and other bedbug-friendly materials. Is it so hard to reassure us that a bedbug-prevention plan will be in place? Can the industry institute some sort of "no bedbug zone" sticker policy for stores that have preventative bedbug measures firmly established? The Council of Fashion Designers of America said bedbugs have "not come up as a concern from our membership," but that it is "ready to actively engage if the situation warrants it and is open to direction and advice from those who are experienced in this area." Experts told us that the recent cases of bedbugs in retail establishments aren't a new phenomenon — they just haven't been making news until now.
