This Friday's big release, the Akshay Kumar starrer Khatta Meetha got itself embroiled in a controversy earlier this week. After the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) viewed and cleared the film on July 13, a certain party lodged a complaint against clearing the film due to the presence of a scene in which an elephant is shown pulling the road-roller.
The complainant seems to have found the scene objectionable as it depicts cruelty towards animals and hence asked the CBFC to order the makers to delete the scene. Such a step would have resulted in delaying the dispatch of overseas prints and could have even pushed the release date further. However, things seem to have been sorted now.
When we got in touch with the PR of the film he said, "Yes there was a small issue but it has been sorted now. Apparently, Sonam Kapoor the leading lady of I Hate LUV Storys (IHLS) was supposed to fly down to Mumbai for the celebration party on Saturday. But she did not eventually show up because of the tight schedule in Edinburgh for Mausam.
Says a source close to the actress, "Too much of the Mausam schedule had already been disturbed because Sonam had to take a break to return to Mumbai to promote IHLS. There was no way she could return for even a day."
Director Punit Malhotra was seen solo at the party but hardly looking lost. "We had a mad evening. It was super-entertaining. I got everyone drunk," said Punit the day after the party. Everyone from Sammir Dattani to Karan Johar was hung-over the next morning, Punit made sure of that.
Surprisingly, Imran Khan too came solo to the party. According to Punit his girlfriend Avantika was travelling. But another source revealed that Avantika decided to have a girls' night out with her friends while Imran whooped it up with the IHLS gang.
Punit personally went around chasing the guests down and drowing shots down their throats.
Yes, Aamir Khan did show up, solo, for the I Hate LUV Storys celebration bash. But someone very close to Karan Johar suggests not to read too much into this so-called new friendship. "Aamir invited Karan to his Peepli Live music release. Karan invited him back for his IHLS party. That's it. But Sohail Maklai has decided to shift his film ahead by three weeks, which means that KNOCK OUT, starring Sanjay Dutt, Irrfan and Kangna Ranaut, will now arrive on 1st October.

The pre-release reports of KHATTA MEETHA and ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI are super-hot, with the distributors acquiring the films for excellent prices. In fact, if the films succeed [one genuinely hopes, they do!], it will pave way for films that the common man can relate to.
Talking of KHATTA MEETHA, the Akshay-Priyadarshan combo has mostly collaborated on non-stop laughathons, but their new outing together, KHATTA MEETHA, has an interesting premise and is laced with straight-out-of-life situations. "I am glad the promos are radiating the right signals," Akshay tells me. Similarly, ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI isn't the usual story that we've watched over and over again. (Laughs). I've just come out of Top Shop and destroyed myself. I've gone on an insane shopping spree. I haven't got a chance to enjoy IHLS success. I am shooting here for Mausam with Shahid Kapoor and will miss the after party of IHLS.
So, can you take us into the sweet world of Aisha?
Of course yes. It's her world, her friends, her aesthetics, her energy, her love, her vibrancy, etc. Aisha is a happy girly person who is as strong as an individual. But she is soon going to transform herself from a girl to a woman. That's what Aisha is about. It's a coming of age story and a chick flick, as we all love to put it. What's important is the fact that Aisha has a certain growth to her character which makes her world more interesting.
And how was the in-his-own-space Abhay Deol? Did he make you feel like a weirdo just like him?
(Laughs) Abhay and I share very similar acting styles. The energy between us actually translates. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I told him that I need to work with him again. We had a blast and I am missing him now (laughs). We shared a give and take relationship. What not many know about us is that we both are emotional actors. I want to do lots of movies with Abhay Deol.
So now that IHLS worked in the overseas, will it give Aisha that extra nudge?
Well, I hope so. I'd love to interact with the media and my fans in London. Yes, Aisha will give that extra push because IHLS worked but any film, be it Aisha or any of my forthcoming releases will only work if the story is up to the mark. The same audiences who loved IHLS have hated many of the past films released in the overseas. But the initial nudge will be there.
Your smile is so infectious that it wouldn't be a bad idea to launch a 'foot long smile' Subway around the globe. (Laughs) Thank you so much. I think it's not a bad idea. I'd love to have one on my way to London. But do keep me posted on the 'sub' front (laughs).

So, were you more impressed with the book or the film Emma?
I think the book is a better version for me. I liked the film too but the book gives you more depth. Aisha isn't a rip off from any film. It's basically about a girl who is constantly match-making and the whole film is centred on Aisha and her bunch of friends. For Aisha, you need people around her to challenge her, to interact with her, to speak to her, to cry and laugh with her. That's what the film does. It's a great ensemble film.
And how was it to drive in the cute yellow 'Beetle'?
I love it. I am a crazy girl when it comes to driving. I love driving fast and Beetle is so girly and cute. It's a perfect girl's car. I am soon going to get one for myself.
Aisha is still a fantasy, isn't it?
This movie is for everyone. Girls will love it and the kids will love it too. It's got great music, it's got funny moments, and it's got superb music. To add more, you have parties, great clothes and is filled with colours. The youth will fall in love with the film. Aisha is also about a father, a daughter and marriage. It's a quirky love story and translates through ages.

So in terms of acting, have you pushed the envelope?
I think, I don't know. It was challenging for me to do Aisha. I was there in every frame from beginning to end. To do two hours of consistent performance is not easy. It's a light hearted comedy and that's what difficult for me. Crying and laughing and getting angry comes easy to me. But being a girl and being happy and having a great timing in comedy is a tough task.
Want to know more about a professional from a professional. Sonam Kapoor on Rhea Kapoor. Rhea is young and filled with lots of energy. She is very bright and extremely practical. She has a vision and is hard-headed too. Because she is young and creative, she can take chances and be courageous. Aisha is a bold step to take for our first film together as a family.
How different is your couture in Aisha compared to that of IHLS?
It's diverse. It's like chalk and cheese. IHLS had me dressed up in casuals throughout. I was simple and yet colourful because I was an ordinary girl. It's a tough act to follow and Manish pulled it off well. In Aisha, I'm a perfect girl who wants to be dressed up in high end designer outfits. I get what I want. It's edgy in a way.
And before we disconnect, how close is Aisha for Anil Kapoor?
Aisha is his third child. He is very emotional because it's his first production with both his daughters in it: One as an actor and one as a producer. My father trusted everything that Rhea did for this film and is backing us all the way to make sure Aisha reaches out to the audiences who've loved him for three decades. "Keep politics out of art and culture," says Pakistan pop singer Ali Zafar who arrived in Mumbai this month. He would like nothing better than to move to Mumbai and become a singing actor like Kishore Kumar. But would the current milieu of hostility allow him to make that move?
"Things have to get better between the two countries," Ali says optimistically. "The sooner the better. Because the present hostility is unbearable. We from the entertainment industry in Pakistan are hard hit by the suspicion between the two countries."
Ali Zafar is honest enough to admit there's more scope for him to function in India than in Pakistan. "I'll be honest. There are more avenues and prospects here. So if the God above and the politicians down below permit, I'd love to move to Mumbai. An artiste knows no bounds and boundaries. My first home is Lahore. But I'd like to make Mumbai my second home."
Ali has a wife and a 3-month baby boy back home. "When I left home I kept looking back at my home and loved ones. I wish they could come with me." Ali expects his wife to join him in Mumbai later during his current trip to the city, his first after 26/11.
In the last 6-7 years, he has been to Mumbai at least 20 times.
However, he was unable to return recently because of the current political scenario. "Things have changed. My last visit was before 27/11 and I remember how pleasant the mood was in Mumbai. I was free to move around and roam freely on the streets of Mumbai. I cannot deny there's tension between the two countries. Earlier aana jaana laga rehta tha. Initially, we artistes from Pakistan used to get multiple visas quite easily. Yes now it's different, and sadly so. However, I feel singers and other artistes should be exempt from politics."
Ali thinks it's easy for him to incorporate singing into his acting because he uses a lot of acting expression on stage. "I wanted to do something different from what my colleagues from Pakistan do in India. I always thought my first acting experience would be something different and special. I've no leading lady in my first film Tere Bin Laden. I was determined that when I act for the first time, I'd sing for myself and not sing for others on screen. When I met the director Abhishek Sharma for Tere Bin Laden in Mumbai, I knew this was the project that I wanted to start my big-screen acting career with. I laughed so much when I heard the script. I was sure audiences would love it too."Being married doesn't diminish Ali's popularity. "On the contrary female fans trust married men more than unmarried men.
Married men are considered stable."
About being inspired by Kishore Kumar, Ali Zafar shoots off, "He's my definite inspiration, just as Kishore Kumar Saab was inspired by K.L Saigal."

While Vidya Balan who considers herself half a Bengali had herself a ball in Kolkata last week shooting for Rajkumar Gupta's No One Killed Jessica, Rani Mukerjee who is a fully certified Bengali was not to be seen in her home-town.
Going by the way Vidya's shooting schedule went in Kolkata it was all for the best if Rani stayed away.
Apparently, the 2-day schedule had to be shot with secret cameras in prominent public places where the security was most inadequate.
Says the source, "We had to shoot in crowded locations like the Kolkata airport, Baliganj, Park Circus and New Market. The crowds in these places were impossible to control. We had rushed in place the cameras secretly. Vidya would then get into camera range and before the bystanders recognized the star in their midst, we were out. If Rani had also accompanied Vidya it would've been impossible to control."
Director Rajkumar Gupta is tight-lipped about the details in Kolkata. "All I can tell you is that shooting in Kolkata was even tougher than Delhi. But it was fun. By now, I am used to shooting on crowded main streets with my actors. It was the last two days of shooting. On the second day after we finished, (dress designer) Sabysachi Chakraborty who belongs to Kolkata, took the entire unit out for dinner. We had some terrific Bengali food.
