Cuban Spy Gets Life in Jail

Kendall Myers, a 73-year-old former State Department analyst who had been spying for Cuba for 30 years, was sentenced to life in jail yesterday. Myers pleaded guilty last November to conspiracy to commit espionage and wire fraud. His wife, Gwendolyn Steingraber Myers, admitted to only one count of conspiracy and received a sentence of six years in jail. (Fidel Castro, meanwhile, has been making rare public appearances on Cuban TV again.) Don't trust anyone yet, because everyone knows these things happen in threes. [CNN]

Agent Ari Emanuel Helped Pitch an HBO Pilot

Ari E.

William Morris Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel, the inspiration for Entourage's Ari Gold, personally pitched a pilot to HBO, which has now been green-lit, though he will not be writing it or producing it. The series, a comedy based on Nikki Joel's blog, Lifestyle Lemonaid, will be about marriage and parenting. (Nikki is married to WME agent Brandt Joel, and both Joels, who will produce, pitched the pilot along with Emanuel.) Tilda, another HBO pilot based on a Hollywood blogger named Nikki, still sounds more exciting to us. [Wrap]

Sex-Crazed Bedbugs Now Attacking Ad Agencies

Yesterday, all the bedbugs that weren't crawling through the lacy underwear at Victoria's Secret were attacking an ad agency. Euro RSCG Worldwide had to shut down on Friday after the critter of the summer was found in five different offices at the agency's 350 Hudson Street HQ. A Euro RSCG rep told The Wall Street Journal: "We prefer to take absolutely no chances with the health and safety of our employees. Therefore, we decided to close and exterminate the entire office out of an abundance of caution."

As if we hadn't already caught on, the Journal confirms that "statewide, the number of calls to exterminators is growing." The paper adds that the infestation might actually be caused by these sticky, summer nights, since that sort of thing turns bedbugs on, too, apparently! "Exterminators partly blame the hot, balmy weather for spurring the bugs to reproduce faster." Those little animals.

Vatican paper: new Caravaggio may have been found (AP)

The front page of the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, pictured in Rome, Saturday, July 17, 2010. The newspaper has reported Saturday that a new Caravaggio painting may have been found in Rome, but cautioned that further analyses are required to ascertain whether the canvas is indeed the work of the Italian master. The front-page story in L'Osservatore Romano came out as Italy celebrates the 400th anniversary of Caravaggio's death. The painting depicts 'The Martyrdom of St. Lawrence' and belongs to the Jesuits in Rome, the paper said. It did not say where the painting is being studied or who's examining it. An image of the painting shows a semi-naked young man amid flames, his mouth open, one arm stretched out as he leans over. (AP Photo/Gregorio Borgia)AP - The Vatican newspaper reported Saturday that a new Caravaggio painting may have been found in Rome, but cautioned that further analyses are required before it can be attributed for certain to the Italian master.

Anna Chapman: ‘It Was the Best of Times, It Was the Worst of Times’

After living the high life in America, spy Anna Chapman is back in mother Russia, and what is she doing with herself? Just sittin' at home, chillin' on Facebook. Only one day after returning, Chapman reopened her Facebook page, changed her profile picture, and updated her status with the Dickens quote, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."

Perhaps she's referring to her whole stint in the U.S., a country her attorney recently claimed she didn't really want to leave. In that case, it was the best of times because because she had a 60-year-old boyfriend, went to cool parties, and had her picture taken by Patrick McMullan! But it's never that simple, is it? Because it was also the worst of times for Chapman, apparently, perhaps because she was also, when push came to shove, being followed by the FBI and acting under a false identity. There was that. In any case, after a stampede of Facebook friends and fans chimed in with their thoughts and support, Chapman has already changed her status to an Eleanor Roosevelt quote: "You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face." So when she's not being interrogated by the Russian government, or receiving invitations to the Moscow Salt premiere, Anna Chapman is basically sitting on her computer thinking of things to say, once again proving that Russian spies are just like us, after all ... sort of.

Updated: The Village Voice imagines what Chapman at her computer might look like.

Facebook Founder Says The Social Network ‘Emphasizes Things That Didn’t Matter’

Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz (pictured) is played by actor Joseph Mazzello in the upcoming David Fincher film The Social Network, and he's the first of the website's founders to react to the trailer. On the website Quora, Moskovitz told interested parties:

It is interesting to see my past rewritten in a way that emphasizes things that didn’t matter and leaves out things that really did. Other than that, it’s just cool to see a dramatization of history. A lot of exciting things happened in 2004, but mostly we just worked a lot and stressed out about things; the version in the trailer seems a lot more exciting, so I’m just going to choose to remember that we drank ourselves silly and had a lot of sex with coeds. I’m very curious to see how Mark turns out in the end — the plot of the book/script unabashedly attack him, but I actually felt like a lot of his positive qualities come out truthfully in the trailer (soundtrack aside)."

He has a point: As dramatizations go, depictions of one's years as drunker and more sex-fueled than they really were is not so bad. And even though Zuckerberg was probably too busy drinking and having sex to remember that whole bender accurately, many on Quora have asked the face of Facebook for his thoughts on the film, too, but he has yet to comment.

So How’s the New Oil-Containment Cap Working?

On Thursday, after underwater robots had successfully replaced the mediocre oil-containment cap with an effective one, BP actually seemed to have stopped oil from spilling into the Gulf! So how's it going now? Thad Allen, who's overseeing the government's response to the oil spill, says pressure is rising in the well. According to CNN, "That was a sign that the well was holding and that the leak that had been spewing oil into the Gulf for nearly three months could be contained." Woo! Even though the idea of pressure rising sounds a little scary, like the type of thing that would make an accidentally crappy oil-containment cap suddenly burst, pressure rising actually means the thing is working. According to CNN, we want even more pressure to rise:

"More than a day into the 'well integrity' test, pressure above 7,500 pounds per square inch would indicate 'high integrity and low potential for a leak,' according to [Thad] Allen. What does 6,700 pounds per square inch [the current pressure] mean? Government scientists and BP experts were not quite sure. It could be a leak, or it could simply be that so much oil has spilled out already, it's taking a while to build up pressure. 'In general, as the president noted today, this is generally good news,' Allen said."

In general, we're hesitant to be completely optimistic, but this sounds like a major improvement. We'll update if the news gets totally good after today's tests.

Obama’s Vacation Location Faces Criticism

Fun! But is it TOO MUCH fun?

The Obama family is currently on vacation in the coastal town of Bar Harbor, Maine, taking in the scenery and biking. It sounds really lovely! Except, obviously, it's being criticized. According to U.S. News & World Report:

"Gulf officials think that Obama, who is off to Maine this weekend for a short pre-vacation before a longer one likely in Martha's Vineyard, would help them with their sales bid to the rest of the nation. They say pictures of Obama and his family, beamed around the world through the huge White House press corps, would be much better than his brief visits to the oil spill site and meeting with local residents. Instead, a vacation would prove that the beaches are open for business."

Really? Because an Obama family trip to Louisiana that consisted of completely ignoring the disastrous, highly politicized oil spill for some R&R doesn't sound like the sort of thing that would necessarily go over smoothly, either. Conservative blogger Michelle Malkin piles on the vacation criticism though, with the headline: "Michelle Obama: Take your Vacation in the Gulf, America — If You Need Us, We’ll be In Maine," even though Malkin has already noted that the First Lady visited the Gulf twice in the past month. ABC News, too, critiqued Michelle Obama for encouraging vacationing Americans to visit the oil-stricken region and then heading to Maine herself. But if coconut ice cream is any indication, it sounds like the Obamas are having some family fun, despite the scrutiny.

Christo’s Upcoming Artwork: Environmental Hazard?

The Gates in Central Park.

The Bureau of Land Management in Colorado has issued Christo, the bespectacled artist behind the 2005 art project "The Gates" and a number of other large-scale works (along with his late wife Jeanne-Claude), an environmental impact statement on his upcoming project, "Over the River." For "River," Christo plans to layer fabric panels along 42 miles of the Arkansas River in southern Colorado, but the state's environmental review "concludes that the project would have consequences for the [local] landscape and communities," according to the Times, and suggests it be seriously reduced in size. Naturally, the controversy-courting artist loves this: "We were banging our heads and asking to have an environmental impact statement for such a long time," he said. Now that there's even a whole protest group, Christo must be doubly pumped! [NYT]
