Hear this. A small-time Pakistani reporter dreams of a bite from Big Apple. So what does he do? He sends George Bush a tape with an Osama look-alike threatening mayhem in the US.
Tere Bin Laden is one of those whacked-out satires that sound far funnier in theory than it finally is on screen. For no fault of the lead actor, one might add. Ali Zafar's comic timing could put some of our desi Khans to shame. Ali is a young actor with considerable screen presence. What's more he seems to secrete a sharp sense of enjoyment when confronted by the outrageous which he projects outwards with a missile-like aim that sometimes misses its target.
This is high-wit low-budget comedy, and it shows. The gags and one-liners involving the preparation to put the fake Osama in the line of fire are pungent parody in principle. But the films meagre budget muffles the mirth. Finally it's all about placing cameras in front of world maps rather than going out there to capture those parts of the world that the satire takes into its tongue-in-cheek sweep.
There are some stinging swipes taken at the Americanization of the Asian dream, and the craze for young urbanites in this part of the world to make good their escape at any cost. Debutant director Abhishek Sharma never loses hold of the satirical mould. The sense of fun is uppermost in the script, though quite frequently the humour gets derailed by studio-induced props worthy more of a television sitcom on burger-mania rather than a film whose satirical take on terrorism touches the nerve-centres of our very existence.
That Sharma is actually able to pull off a parody that combines poultry jokes with globally-significant comments, is no small achievement. Luckily the humour eschews vulgarity except for one inter-lewd where a man in a burqa tells another guy, "I may be in a Burqa but otherwise I have the same things that you do."
Ahem ahem. Happily the same is not valid for the satire. Under the outer skin it is different from what we see as satire.
The actors are in the mood for some serious fun here. While Ali Zafar sparkles in the embrace of the script's feisty wit, Pradhuman Singh as an Osama look-alike too seems to have fun biting the bait. His scenes with a beautician (Sugandha Garg) who touches up his face are deliciously suggestive.

Barely hours after Spain won the World Cup, Anil Kapoor was fatigued and yet euphoric in Johannesburg. He had seen what he called the greatest show on earth and met the man who made it possible.
Being the brand ambassador to South Africa, Anil had a ringside view of the match. And he's most impressed.
"You have to understand the World Cup final was a self-contained experience. And the way the South African government put it together is exemplary for all, including us Indians who struggle against countless glitches when we host an international sporting event. On Sunday evening here in Johannesburg there were no glitches, no traffic jams on the roads, no seating errors, no jostling and no VIP interventions. Everything went smoothly. I'd describe it as the greatest show on earth."
Anil was bowled over by Shakira. "What a presence! What a performance! She just took everyone's collective breath away and set the right mood for the match."
The match itself was touch and go, and Anil was hooked. "The final moments proved decisive for Spain. I realized what edge-of-the-seat excitement meant. I forgot everything in the final moments of the game including the fact that I had flown in and had to fly out within 24 hours. It was just 96,000 people staring open-mouthed in a stadium built specially for the occasion."
Anil ran into some of his colleagues from Bollywood at the stadium. "It was great meeting Shah Rukh and Gauri, though they sat in a different area from me. What I really enjoyed was meeting Shah Rukh's son Aryan for the first time. What a bright good-looking boy. He sure is a chip off the old block."
But the greatest most moving moment of the match was when Nelson Mandela arrived.
Anil chokes with emotion. "I first met Mandela for my film Gandhi My Father. But I can never get over my awe and admiration for the man. The elaborate and elegant way he arrived for the match just bowled me over. Because of his grand-daughter's accident, Mandela had not come for any of the other matches. But he made it a point to come for this one because his country hosting something so spectacular was matter of great pride for him. I just kept looking at him wondering how vindicated Mandela must be feeling to see a country he had brought to freedom, celebrating its freedom with such a wonderful event."
On Monday, Anil was getting ready to return to Mumbai. "I had to be back to carry on with the marketing of my daughter's film. I can't wait to see its release on August 6. After that I'm taking a month-long holiday in LA.
