Hear this. A small-time Pakistani reporter dreams of a bite from Big Apple. So what does he do? He sends George Bush a tape with an Osama look-alike threatening mayhem in the US.
Tere Bin Laden is one of those whacked-out satires that sound far funnier in theory than it finally is on screen. For no fault of the lead actor, one might add. Ali Zafar's comic timing could put some of our desi Khans to shame. Ali is a young actor with considerable screen presence. What's more he seems to secrete a sharp sense of enjoyment when confronted by the outrageous which he projects outwards with a missile-like aim that sometimes misses its target.
This is high-wit low-budget comedy, and it shows. The gags and one-liners involving the preparation to put the fake Osama in the line of fire are pungent parody in principle. But the films meagre budget muffles the mirth. Finally it's all about placing cameras in front of world maps rather than going out there to capture those parts of the world that the satire takes into its tongue-in-cheek sweep.
There are some stinging swipes taken at the Americanization of the Asian dream, and the craze for young urbanites in this part of the world to make good their escape at any cost. Debutant director Abhishek Sharma never loses hold of the satirical mould. The sense of fun is uppermost in the script, though quite frequently the humour gets derailed by studio-induced props worthy more of a television sitcom on burger-mania rather than a film whose satirical take on terrorism touches the nerve-centres of our very existence.
That Sharma is actually able to pull off a parody that combines poultry jokes with globally-significant comments, is no small achievement. Luckily the humour eschews vulgarity except for one inter-lewd where a man in a burqa tells another guy, "I may be in a Burqa but otherwise I have the same things that you do."
Ahem ahem. Happily the same is not valid for the satire. Under the outer skin it is different from what we see as satire.
The actors are in the mood for some serious fun here. While Ali Zafar sparkles in the embrace of the script's feisty wit, Pradhuman Singh as an Osama look-alike too seems to have fun biting the bait. His scenes with a beautician (Sugandha Garg) who touches up his face are deliciously suggestive.
While Tere Bin Laden is many notches above the run-of-the-mill satire, as a spectral swipe at Osama-phobia, Bush-bashing and global terrorism this one doesn't quite make the cut.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 17 Jul 2010 | 7:51 am Check out: Dia Mirza in latest issue of Marie Claire

Barely hours after Spain won the World Cup, Anil Kapoor was fatigued and yet euphoric in Johannesburg. He had seen what he called the greatest show on earth and met the man who made it possible.
Being the brand ambassador to South Africa, Anil had a ringside view of the match. And he's most impressed.
"You have to understand the World Cup final was a self-contained experience. And the way the South African government put it together is exemplary for all, including us Indians who struggle against countless glitches when we host an international sporting event. On Sunday evening here in Johannesburg there were no glitches, no traffic jams on the roads, no seating errors, no jostling and no VIP interventions. Everything went smoothly. I'd describe it as the greatest show on earth."
Anil was bowled over by Shakira. "What a presence! What a performance! She just took everyone's collective breath away and set the right mood for the match."
The match itself was touch and go, and Anil was hooked. "The final moments proved decisive for Spain. I realized what edge-of-the-seat excitement meant. I forgot everything in the final moments of the game including the fact that I had flown in and had to fly out within 24 hours. It was just 96,000 people staring open-mouthed in a stadium built specially for the occasion."
Anil ran into some of his colleagues from Bollywood at the stadium. "It was great meeting Shah Rukh and Gauri, though they sat in a different area from me. What I really enjoyed was meeting Shah Rukh's son Aryan for the first time. What a bright good-looking boy. He sure is a chip off the old block."
But the greatest most moving moment of the match was when Nelson Mandela arrived.
Anil chokes with emotion. "I first met Mandela for my film Gandhi My Father. But I can never get over my awe and admiration for the man. The elaborate and elegant way he arrived for the match just bowled me over. Because of his grand-daughter's accident, Mandela had not come for any of the other matches. But he made it a point to come for this one because his country hosting something so spectacular was matter of great pride for him. I just kept looking at him wondering how vindicated Mandela must be feeling to see a country he had brought to freedom, celebrating its freedom with such a wonderful event."
On Monday, Anil was getting ready to return to Mumbai. "I had to be back to carry on with the marketing of my daughter's film. I can't wait to see its release on August 6. After that I'm taking a month-long holiday in LA. I think I've earned myself a break."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 17 Jul 2010 | 2:44 am Kareena finding it difficult to be a Stepmom - Times of India

Everyone, says someone important in this searing document of our times, is playing politics in the Kashmir Valley. In a milieu of all-pervasive politics, thank the Lord for a creative voice that can look into the burning Valley with dispassionate compassion.
Lamhaa is one of those docu-dramas that could have easily toppled into the territory of over-statement and over-simplified politics. And boy, haven't we seen that happen in very successful political cinema in recent times?!
Rahul Dholakia who earlier made the gently persuasive Parzania on the aftermath of the Gujarat riots, doesn't lose his storytelling equilibrium even when the situations of crises described by the skillfully-written plot scream for attention. Restraint and honesty go hand-in-hand in Dholakia's Kashmir, which we'd like to believe, is the real Kashmir, unalloyed, non-magnified, intense and utterly devoid of artifice.
The camera moves restlessly through the dangerous crowded main roads and tense by lanes of Kashmir where anything can happen. The cinematographer James Fowlds seems to know the Valley of the damned with the transparent scrupulousness of an insider who can place himself outside the explosive bustle of a portion of earth that's rapidly slipped into the stratosphere of anarchy and mayhem.
The high-octane screenplay has no space or time to shed tears for the innocent and the dead. Miraculously liberated of overt sentimentality Lamhaa moves with candour and confidence through a world whose politics has become progressively impossible for the outsider to comprehend. Dholakia's narrative moves through a labyrinth of pain and violence without trying to make common sense of them.
The narrative imposes no morality on the escalated violence of the Valley. Neither does Dholakia get excessively 'cinematic' in his approach to the complex material. Most of the time he lets the characters be. The Valley of simmering discontent comes alive in front of us in a ferocious but toned-down swoop of politics and drama.
The narrative moves swiftly and steadily through the characters' lives. It isn't always easy to tell who is on the right side, probably because the lines of morality are not just blurred in the Valley, they've almost completely disappeared. Jannat is in a limbo.
Lamhaa is a tearless ode to a people who have become so isolated from the mainstream of Indian life that the adorable children openly and abusively talk of India as a separate country. The dialogues (Ashwath Bhatt) spare none, not the politicians and certainly not the other power-brokers who in the films words have turned Kashmir into a lucrative business company.
At the lowest level, Lamhaa is thought provoking mirror of mayhem and misapprehensions on a piece of earth that once was paradise. At the highest level it's an even-pitched docu-drama which doesn't mince words nor try to act cute about a throbbing crisis. The pitch is controlled even when the circumstances in the plot are totally out of control.
As Sanjay Dutt walks into the volatile Valley with leonine strides we feel for a while as though Dholakia wants to insinuate a larger-than-life super-hero into headline-driven politics. But Dutt soon blends into the savage fabric of a life lived on the edge by people who have nothing to lose any more.
The film is dotted with memorable cameos. Among the fringe players Shenaz Patel as a woman looking for her husband for 18 years leaves a lingering impact. Among the principal cast Kunal Kapoor as a young militant turned conscientious politician determined to gather peace into the Valley and Anupam Kher as a treacherous political leader get it right dead-on.
But the real revelation is Bipasha Basu. In a powerful role that Shabana Azmi would no doubt have played twenty years ago, Bipasha sinks herself into her character imparting a dramatic resonance into the role without resorting to stock expressions. The sequence where she gets mauled by militant women is as traumatic to watch as it must have been for Bipasha to shoot.
Lamhaa is not an easy film to watch. It comes to no decisive end. It takes into consideration the entire politics of Kashmir without careening towards excessive drama. This is that rare political drama where every component in the jigsaw of politics and terrorism is put on screen with a sensitivity and precision that repudiate melodramatic excesses.
A word of special praise for Mithoon's songs. The lyrically lush tunes break into the deafening sound of bomb blasts and roaring guns to remind us that once the best poets of Kashmir wrote poetry on the beauty of the Valley.
The beauty of Lamhaa lies in its constant gaze at that beauty that one still glimpses in the shimmering waters of Dal Lake on a quiet and peaceful day.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 17 Jul 2010 | 2:12 am Lamhaa is thought provoking mirror of mayhem: SubhashEveryone, says someone important in this searing document of our times, is playing politics in the Kashmir Valley. It's that time of the year when a new work of cinema by a new director grabs your attention by their ba.ls.
Udaan is a ballsy debut by Vikramaditya Motwane who once assisted the angst-laden Sanjay Leela Bhansali and then his angst-cousin Anurag Kashyap. You can see the lasting impression of both the senior creators in the way Motwane designs the uneasy and violent relationship between the 17-year old Rohan (Rajat Barmecha) and his tyrannical father (Ronit Roy) who's almost villainous in his despotism.
When Udaan is not busy trying to be a regular nudge-nudge-wink-wink coming-of-age film (Billy Elliot-goes-to-Jamshedpur) it gives us some great moments of cinema , done in shades that leave the camera lens far behind to romance the very core of middleclass life (no doubt corroded and outdated) in the soporific 'steel town' .
The film starts with a mildly amusing boys-disastrous-night-out-from-boarding- school sequence and then quickly gets down to the serious business on hand of telling us that Rohan's father has not met his son for eight years. Why? We never really get to know. And this remains the otherwise-exemplary work's one biggest flaw. Though played with energetic antipathy by Ronit Roy, the father's unreasonable autocracy makes the man appear as no more than a subtle caricature of lousy parenting.
The delicate moments emerge in the tale of self-realization through Rohan's inner moral churning and of course through the young actor Rajat Barmecha's instinctive understanding of his character's turmoil. Barmecha's expressions of anguish rage helplessness and finally retaliation and protest are so smoothly conveyed, you almost feel he is playing a character he knows first-hand.
Barmecha gives the narrative a compelling consistency. Director Motwane does the rest. His eye for visual and emotional detail is never over-punctuated. A certain delicacy even when tackling a subject as thorny as the father-child domestic violence runs through the narrative, rendering the characterizations and their motivations not only lucid but eminently palatable and engaging.
It's interesting to see how Motwane employs the tradition misunderstood-protagonist-against-a-heartless-word formula to the coming-of-age saga. Barmecha's poet-hero is a clever subverted carryover of Guru Dutt in Pyasa.
In Pyasa Dutt stood up to an insensitive world. Here it is the boorish father who won't let his son be a poet. This rare and precious film about straitjacketed claustrophobic middleclass values derives its strength from the unpunctuated uncluttered dramatic force that emerges from the main relationships.
By the time Rohan walks out on his loutish father with his little stepbrother we are no longer looking at Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan's uneasy father-son rapport in Ramesh Sippy's Shakti. We are on to something far more disturbing and contemporary.
Each time the despotic father in Udaan raises a hand to toast terror he raises uncomfortable questions on child abuse and its parameters within the Great Indian Middleclass Family.
In Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Anupama the disgruntled father Tarun Bose would not look at his traumatized daughter Sharmila Tagore because he lost his beloved wife during child birth.
In Udaan the father holds the son culpable for crimes that we can only decode in the detailed episodes showing the son's rebellious streak.
If God lies in the details, so does the devil.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 17 Jul 2010 | 2:12 am Ali Zafar appeals against Pak ban - Hindustan Times

This is what has been decided by the producer and co-directors of Race 2.
"Kareena is to be paired with John because they've never been teamed together before. This depends on the two resolving their personal differences. But Bipasha is a no-no with John and with Saif because that pairing was done in Race. The idea is to bring in fresh pairs. So while Kareena would be with John, Asin might be teamed with Saif in Race 2," says a source very close to the project.
There is no information on who would be paired with Anil Kapoor.
Race 2 has got its leading men - Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and John Abraham in place. But the three top leading ladies are being kept under wraps.
Abbas-Mustan are not talking about the casting of the girls because his producer Ramesh Taurani is now in Colombo for his daughter's wedding.
No one from the film industry is expected to attend the wedding on 18 July. Taurani, it seems, has flown in only close friends and family.
In the meanwhile the final call on the female casting of Race 2 is frozen.
Says director Abbas, "We'll take a final decision once Rameshji returns from Colombo. We've got two back-to-back action films Italian Job and Race 2 to shoot for two different production houses (Studio 18 and Tips, respectively). It's a big responsibility because both are big-budgeted multi-starrers to be shot in eye-catching locations and with huge action scenes. Luckily for us, Italian Job is heist film and Race 2 is a caper. So there's no overlapping."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 16 Jul 2010 | 3:03 am
