Industry Roundup: Winter's Bone Actress To Play X-Men's Mystique

The X Factor: Jennifer Lawrence - who has garnered significant Oscar buzz for her role in this summer's Winter's Bone - has been cast as Mystique in Fox’s X-Men: First Class. She joins a group of actors including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Alice Eve and Kevin Bacon. Mystique, played by Rebecca Romijn in the trilogy, is that blue sultry shapeshifter who can mimic other people. Guess that Esquire shoot paid off! [Heat Vision/HR]

A Dark Task: Seth Grahame-Smith, the author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, is making the move to Hollywood. Grahame-Smith will write a new draft of the script for Dark Shadows, the Tim Burton-Johnny Depp adaptation of the 1960s daytime supernatural serial (John August already took a first pass at the script). Write a juicy part for Helena Bonham-Carter, Seth, and you should be all set. [Deadline]

Guided Return: Indie rock group Guided By Voices has finally released the full details of its reunion tour, which will include a previously announced October 3 Vegas show as part of Matador Records’ 21st birthday celebration. The tour will begin September 30 in Austin, Texas and finish November 7 at New York's Terminal 5. The band will also stop to play Late Night With Jimmy Fallon along the way. [Billboard]

Pay Day: The View’s Sherri Shepherd has been cast in dual roles in the Katherine Heigl crime thriller One for the Money. Variety says, as if this is a totally normal thing, “For both roles, she’ll play prostitutes with hearts of gold.” Um, what?! [Variety]

X Marks The Spot: Warner Bros. has picked up Colin Trevorrow’s script for World War X, which follows a man recruited by a team of government agents to stop a terrorist visiting from the future who “is using time travel to reshape history.” This sounds like a mashup of every 21st century action movie cliche - which means it will probably make zillions of dollars. [Variety]

Over and Over: Fox 2000 has optioned the rights to Lauren Oliver’s teen novel Before I Fall, with Maria Maggenti signed on to adapt. The book brings a “Groundhog Day approach to high school,” as a female student “finds herself living what may be her last day on earth over and over, until she gets things right.” News of this role is totally going to set off the Disney Channel actress version of the fierce competition for the Dragon Tattoo part. [Deadline]

City's Unemployment Rate Drops For Sixth Straight Month

Even though the census’ end meant the loss of thousands of jobs, New York City’s unemployment rate managed to drop to 9.5 percent in June, the sixth straight month of decline, the State Labor Department said. The city added 8,300 jobs in the private sector in June, a pretty notable increase, with the biggest pick-ups in construction and leisure and hospitality. And more good news: New York State's overall unemployment rate also fell over the past month, reaching a 14-month low of 8.2 percent. [NYT]

Last Night on Late Night: Jay Leno Wants to Urinate with Ellen Page

Ellen Page saw her story about the family compost pile take a turn for the creepy on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The Inception star was describing how adding urine to your compost pile helps the process adding that her childhood home included communal buckets in the bathroom for collecting the family's urine, something that Jay said he approved of because of all the water saved by not flushing. Emboldened by this newfound bond with his guest, Leno then suggested that he and Page should urinate together sometime. What a charmer. Up next on The Late Show, Kyra Sedgwick tells Dave Letterman about the time she pushed Tom Cruise's panic button, and over at The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Nicolas Cage shares his thoughts on the wounded Chupcabra in Texas. Wrapping things up on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy attempts to block some shots on goal by soccer stud, and recently signed New York Red Bull, Thiery Henry. Trailer for Affleck's The Town Features Big Stars and Boston Accents

While Ben Affleck’s acting chops have proven somewhat divisive, his directorial debut on 2007’s Gone Baby Gone was for the most part quite admired. And if his follow-up, this fall's The Town, is as riveting and action-packed as this trailer, it looks like he'll be maintaining that reputation. Featuring a gritty intensity similar to Gone’s (this film is also set in Boston), the clip promises lots of gun play, some weirdly omnipresent bank robbers, and an array of Boston accents, with Affleck, Rebecca Hall, and Blake Lively engaged in a love triangle. Oh, and as if more reasons to get excited about this were needed, an all-business Jon Hamm and a scrappy Jeremy Renner are in for the fun, too.

Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly Discuss Michelle Obama's Wardrobe

When Beck and O’Reilly get together, you know you’re in for some “fun,” and Thursdays conversation between the two was no exception. Beck sets the mood for his rant du jour by quipping that when O’Reilly “walks into church, the water boils.” He then launches into a pretty random critique of Michelle Obama’s choice in attire when she toured the oil spill. Calling it the “most Marie Antoinette” he’s ever seen her, Beck posits that the First Lady probably decided to wear a dress that was “all white with black splotches” as a way to “relate” to the spill. (Yep.) And of course, he can't resist throwing some "Obama's a communist" rhetoric in at the end.

Former Justice Department Official Says CIA Acted Without Approval

The Bush era-related news just keeps coming today. According to a House Judiciary Committee transcript released Thursday, a former Bush Justice Department official revealed in May that he never authorized several of the interrogation tactics that were inflicted on terrorism suspects. Judge Jay Bybee said that while he did permit the CIA to use certain techniques, such as waterboarding, he never gave approval for tactics such as prolonged shackling to a ceiling or repeated beatings. He defended the use of waterboarding, water slamming and other methods, as lawful, though: “We took a muscular view of presidential authority… We were offering a bottom line to a client who wanted to know what he could do and what he couldn’t do. I wasn’t running a debating society, and I wasn’t running a law school.”

Aaron Sorkin To Write and Direct John Edwards Biopic

After rumors that Aaron Sorkin would be snagging the rights to The Politican, Andrew Young's tell-all about John Edwards, it’s now official. And Sorkin will not only be writing the script, he’ll be making his directorial debut on the project. In a statement that likely caused the Bard to cringe in his grave, Sorkin said: "This is a first hand account of an extraordinary story filled with motivations, decisions and consequences that would have lit Shakespeare up... There is much more to Andrew's book than what has been reported and I am grateful that he's trusting me with it.” Considering the book includes a detailed study of Edwards' hair, one shudders to think what this "much more" could be referring to. Obama Takes The Driver's Seat, Literally

In the passenger seat is Holland mayor Kurt Dykstra, who probably had been preparing anecdotes for weeks.

It does not appear as though Barack Obama had to feign interest in the bright orange Ford Electric Focus he took a seat in today in Holland, Michigan. When he wasn't being photographed in flashy cars, the president also spoke at the groundbreaking for a new factory which will manufacture batteries for electric vehicles. The automotive candy even got the president a bit nostalgic: “My first car didn’t look like these,” he said. “I wouldn’t have minded tooling around in one of these when I was 20 years old.” [The Caucus/NYT]

After getting a bad rap from both 30 Rock and Hot In Cleveland as a city where dreams go to die and attractive people do not exist, Cleveland is getting some positive pop cultural buzz! According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Lady Gaga told the throngs of fans at her Wednesday night show that she “wrote a #1 record in Cleveland.” She had predicted as much earlier in the day when she tweeted, “Emerging from studio coma. Voted no visit to RockNRoll Hall of Fame, rather write a hit that puts me in it.” Now that Gaga has given the city its mojo back, Cleveland should be overteeming with Kellan Lutzes and Brooklyn Deckers in no time. In Absence of a Sex Scandal, Maybe John Daly’s Lucky Purple Pants Can Keep People Excited About Golf

Golf is not supposed to be a loud sport. The clothes, the clapping, the announcing — it's all soft, muffled, nonthreatening. Golf doesn't walk into a room and say "Hey! Pass the cheese plate!" It patters in quietly, takes a seat in the corner, and enjoys its occasional moments in the mass Us Weekly–level spotlight. But now that Tiger Woods's shenanigans are no longer news, how can his sport retain all that glorious attention? Maybe with John Daly's lucky purple paisley pants, which The Wall Street Journal so perfectly calls "extraordinary trousers":

He felt comfortable enough at the Champions Dinner Tuesday night to wear a wild flowered jacket amid the somber gray suits of his fellow former winners. As for the pants, he’s worn them to such good effect in the first rounds of three recent tournaments that he donned them again today. He calls them his “good luck start pants.”

“The good thing about all these pants [made by one of his sponsors, Loudmouth Golf] is that you can get dressed in the dark, because every shirt is going to match,” Mr. Daly told the press after his round.

But just because the pants match everything doesn't mean they also don't clash with everything, grass included.

Fabrice Tourre Is Goldman Sachs’s Sacrificial Lamb

Fabrice Tourre was so loyal to Goldman Sachs. Why wouldn't he have been? They had been good to him. After the subprime market tanked, his bosses had praised his creation of Abacus, a collection of crappy mortgage securities he had created so that hedge-funder John Paulson could short it, and cemented his status in the firm by giving him a promotion and a raise. So when the SEC sued Goldman for fraud over the deal, and certain embarrassing e-mails Fab had written about it came to light, he believed they would have his back, even after they put him on suspended leave. (It was only temporary! they told him. It didn't mean anything!) Was he nervous? Yes. But any fears he might have had were quelled when he traveled to Washington to testify with the rest of the gang in front of Congress. Sure, Fab had to endure some awkward questioning about his personal life. But the point was, he was there with his bros. Together. Forever. Blood brothers. Until now:

Goldman will cooperate in the proceeding against Fabrice Tourre, the employee who was also named in the S.E.C.’s lawsuit. [It's interesting that the settlement covers only Goldman, leaving Mr. Tourre -- one of several Goldman figures to testify before a Senate investigative committee -- out to dry.]

Rodarte’s Mexico-Inspired MAC Line Sparks Controversy

Rodarte for MAC.

Rodarte's MAC collection, which launches on September 15, is inspired by Mexico's colors and culture, and the products are named accordingly. For example, one pink blush is called Quinceañera, while a sheer white lipstick is called Ghost Town. However, the frosty pink nail polish called Juarez isn't sitting well with blogger the Frisky, who finds it "tasteless":

Why’s it tasteless? Juarez is an impoverished Mexican factory town notorious for the number of women between the ages of 12 and 22 who have been raped and murdered with little or no response from police.

Most of the young women are employees at the border town’s factories, called maquiladoras, and disappeared on the way to or from work. Activists have been applying constant pressure on Mexican police, who have shown little response to properly investigating the murders, allegedly because the victims are poor women. The crime channel TruTV even called Juarez a “serial killers’ playground”! And it’s not like the Juarez murders are some big secret: Jennifer Lopez even starred in a film,“Bordertown,” playing a reporter who writes about the rapes and murders.

However, plenty of blogs haven't made this same connection politicizing the nail polish, and are just plain excited about the line. We've reached out to MAC for a comment and will update when that comes through.

Daisy Lowe Roughed Up Her Pretty Dress

Daisy Lowe attended the opening of the Acne London studio today wearing a sheer white maxi dress embellished with daisies. She pulled the nineties trick of pairing a floaty frock with seriously scuffed boots to make it look grungier (or as grungy as one can really look when toting a Chanel bag). Lowe also carried a black leather jacket and wore stacks of silver rings.

Do you like when romantic dresses are toughened up with rock-and-roll accessories? Or do you think Lowe and ilk are ruining a perfectly feminine look?

Vampire Weekend Sued by Cover Model

Kirsten Kennis, the woman on the cover of Vampire Weekend's recent second record, Contra, is suing the band for $2 million because she claims she never consented to the use of her photo (which was taken back in 1983). If she wins, you can probably expect a similar lawsuit from the chandelier on VW's first album. [TMZ]

Weirdly, Amy Adams May Star in a Janis Joplin Biopic

During an interview, Twilight producer Wyck Godfrey got to talking about some other projects his production company, Temple Hill Entertainment, is working on. One of them is a Janis Joplin biopic to be directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God) starring … Amy Adams. Amy Adams, the lovely, talented, Oscar-nominated actress from Junebug , Enchanted, and Doubt whom it is, nonetheless, absolutely impossible to imagine taking a slug of alcohol, let alone choking on her own vomit? Yes! That Amy Adams! IMDb has the movie listed under the title Janis Joplin: Get It While You Can (though it says both Adams and long-rumored-Janis Zooey Deschanel are playing the lead role). While we can definitely imagine actresses less suited to the part by the fact of their total lack of talent, it is hard for us to imagine an actress less suited to the part by the fact of her total non-Joplin-esque vibe. It's going to take us some time to wrap our heads around this one. [Fearnet via Playlist]

Which of David Lynch’s Non-Movie Projects Are Actually Lynchian?

David Lynch/Powerhouse Books

David Lynch’s creativity doesn’t limit itself to his movies: Over the years, the beloved auteur has dabbled in music, photography, sculpture, carpentry, and, of course, amateur meteorology. With his latest non-cinematic project, Dark Night of the Soul — the awesome, troubled Danger Mouse–Sparklehorse album for which Lynch created an accompanying photo book — in stores this week, Vulture takes a look back through Lynch's many projects, examining them on the basis of their Lynchian qualities. What, exactly, constitutes Lynchian? David Foster Wallace explains: “A regular domestic murder is not Lynchian, but if the police come to the scene and the man and the cops have this conversation that the man killed the woman because she persistently refused to buy, say for instance, Jiff peanut butter rather then Skippy, and how very, very important that is, and if the cops found themselves somehow agreeing that there are major differences between the brands and that a wife who doesn’t recognize those differences was deficient in her wifely duties, that would be Lynchian.” Got it? Okay, good. Here we go.

The Daily Caller May Regret Buying That Keith Olbermann Site

Whether the Daily Caller's plans to build KeithOlbermann.com into the Internet's premiere Olbermann-criticism site is a good publicity stunt is not in question. It is. It's all over the Internet, and Olbermann will probably complain about it on his show tonight. The back-and-forth will result in lots of attention for both parties involved. That doesn't mean it's a smart legal move, though, as Olbermann suggested earlier. In fact, according to Enrico Schaefer, founding attorney of Traverse Legal, a law firm specializing in cybersquatting and domain-name disputes, Olbermann would probably have little trouble becoming master of his domain.

"There's always room for some debate on this kind of stuff," Schaefer told us. "But the reality is that Keith Olbermann has got strong trademark rights in his name — a show called Countdown With Keith Olbermann, with his name used as a brand — and therefore anyone that registers a domain name in bad faith, or a personal name of a famous individual who has trademark right, is potentially liable for up to $100,000 in damages, plus attorney fees."

"But wait a second," we ignorantly inquired, "What about, you know, freedom of speech? Doesn't the First Amendment allow us to criticize public figures however we damn well please?" Not always. Some "gripe sites," as they're known, are okay, if they "have no financial stake, no positive benefit that they receive. They just have something to say and they're going to say it," Schaefer explains. But "the moment that you start to make money or derive a benefit for your business, you lose a whole layer of First Amendment protection."

So what's Olbermann's next move? Schaefer says he has three options of varying intensity. On the lower end of the spectrum, he can send the Daily Caller a cease-and-desist letter, giving it five days to hand over control of the website and possibly pay him damages. The middle ground would be forcing it into binding arbitration, which the Daily Caller would have to comply with under the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy, which applies to anyone in the world who registers a domain name. Or he could sue the Daily Caller in federal court under the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act. "I think the Daily Caller would likely lose this across the board," Schaefer predicts.

Not that he has much sympathy for Olbermann. "People who don’t register their domain name and the variations of their name, they're just asking for it," he says, incredulously. "The concept that someone as famous as Keith Olbermann could have gotten this far in life without registering KeithOlbermann.com is shocking."

Crystal Renn Says She Was Photoshopped Thinner in Her Fashion for Passion T-Shirt Shoot

Before (left) and after retouching.

Crystal Renn was very disturbed when her weight yet again became a topic of discussion as online commenters wondered if she was again falling victim to an eating disorder after images of her looking thinner in the Fashion for Passion charity tee surfaced. Renn, who has been anorexic, told Glamour she gasped when she saw the pictures:

Well, I was shocked. When I saw the pictures, I think I was silent for a good five minutes, staring with my mouth open. I don’t know what was done to those photos or who did it, but they look retouched to me. And listen, everybody retouches, but don’t make me into something I’m not. [Reached for comment, photographer Nicholas Routzen explained that Crystal looks the way she does because the photos were “…taken from a higher angle with a wider lens.” But he also added, “I shaped her…I did nothing that I wouldn’t do to anyone. I’m paid to make women look beautiful.”]

In a video of the shoot sent to Glamour by Renn's agent (we used that video to put together a before and after Photoshop image here), Renn looks more voluptuous than she does in the pictures that ran on Ford's blog. Renn continues:

...well, that body doesn’t look like my body. It doesn’t. Having had an eating disorder, I know what that very thin body looks like on me, and it's not something I find attractive. It's not something I aspire to.

I feel completely confident in my own health because I know I don't look like that, but even to see it in an image was really disturbing to me.

Hopefully this will finally silent the chatter about whether or not she's losing weight.

Meet the New Girl: Dafne Cejas Is Riccardo Tisci’s Fall Muse

Dafne Cejas (FORD).

Having a runway exclusive — say, for Prada in Milan or Calvin Klein in New York — is fantastic for a rookie's debut. But when a model is placed on a global exclusive for a label, you know she is going places. Such is the case with Argentinean newcomer Dafne Cejas. After a go-see with Riccardo Tisci, the 17-year-old scored a world exclusive for Givenchy's fall 2010 show. When she hit the catwalk in March, her couture editorial for Italian Vogue also dropped, shot by Steven Klein. This led to Cejas snagging spreads in V and French Vogue, shot by Sebastian Faena and duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot, respectively. Tisci also proved he's a man of his word, booking Cejas for the label's fall prints. Cejas is back in Argentina at the moment, taking a deserved breather and getting ready for the fall — which, by the look of it, is shaping up pretty spectacularly. Click ahead to read a brief Q&A with Cejas, and then visit her new model profile to see loads of on- and off-the-runway pics.

You've become a favorite at Givenchy. How did that relationship start?
That relationship, so to speak, began in February when I was introduced to Riccardo Tisci by Paul Rowland. After my second week in New York, I was confirmed to walk exclusively for Givenchy that season in Paris.

What do you remember most about walking that show?
I remember everything! I mean, that was my first show ever; how could I forget? I worked the week beforehand doing fittings and even learning how to walk on the runway. The day of the show I felt excited and nervous, but [when] I walked, I just told myself to enjoy this moment. I’m still so happy for that experience.

You're on vacation in Argentina right now. Describe a day in the life of Dafne in Argentina.
I usually wake up at 9 or 10 a.m., and have breakfast: coffee and toast with cream cheese, my favorite food. I try to watch or read the news, [but] I love spending as much time in bed as possible! That said, I hate to do the same thing every day. Some days I’ll cook my own lunch, or go for a walk with my boyfriend and dog. Anything that keeps me active and talking.

What do your friends and family make of your newfound career?
[They] are so happy and excited for me, even if they miss me while I’m traveling. It’s funny to think of my father looking on Models.com and reading about me. It’s really surreal!

What are your three favorite pieces from your closet?
(1) Black dresses: They’re classic, sharp, and practical. Every woman needs to have at least one. (2) Shoes: I love heels, even if I only wear them for special events or going out. (3) Handbags: I absolutely love big bags, simply because you can put everything in one place. [There are] a few that I have my eyes on for next season.

If we gave you $100,000 to spend on the clothing of any one designer, who would you pick?
Givenchy! But I also love many different styles, so maybe something from Marc Jacobs or Alexander Wang as well.

Michael Cera Has The Best Losing Virginity Story Ever

I guess it’s just Redeem Yourself After Being Overexposed Via Twee Hipster Comedies Day! Here is Michael Cera’s response to how he lost his virginity from his interview in the August issue of Playboy. I guess the articles really are great!

“To be honest I don’t remember too much about it. All I remember is I had been awake for almost 86 hours, I was on the roof of a Public Storage building in what seemed to be a freezing rainstorm, and Crispin Glover was there with a disposable camera he kept winding even though it had clearly run out of exposures. My memory of it has fogged as time has gone by, and I’ve pushed it out of my mind, though I do seem to remember something about a plastic Academy Award for best grandson being involved. You might say it was my first brush with the finer side of show business.”

And here I was thinking he lost it (insert Juno joke, *gunshot*). The image is so vividly painted, especially the Crispin Glover part. I feel like that’s exactly something he would do. Man, in a perfect world this would be true. This is Crispin watching Cera do it:

Alvin Greene’s Action-Figure Dream Has Been Realized, Sort Of

When Alvin Greene first suggested that there could someday be an action figure in his likeness, people laughed. Such is the price that visionaries pay for dreaming big. But just one week later, Greene's dream has become a reality. Behold! An actual photo of the first ever Alvin Greene ... action-figure-type thing! Sure, it's not rolling off of assembly lines just yet, and it won't do anything to revitalize the economy. And yeah, it's only a promotion that the minor league Charleston RiverDogs baseball team is giving away to the first 1,000 people who show up to its game on Saturday night. And it's really just a photo of Alvin Greene's face taped onto a miniature male Statue of Liberty figurine. But all dreams have to start somewhere.

A Guy Named Maynard Is Abusing Trees in Brooklyn

Thirty-five-year-old Steve Maynard was arraigned in Brooklyn court today on criminal-mischief charges after ripping the limbs off of trees along the Eastern Parkway. But he had a reason! According to the Post, "he told cops that he was working for a private eye searching for the body of a girl named 'Amy,' who he believed had been killed by demons in the trees." But at the time police arrested him, he was no long harming trees and was instead "observed by cops casting and reeling in an imaginary fishing rod." [NYP]

I Fear I Enjoy Diablo Cody’s Talk Show Too Much

Right off the bat, it’s 9 minutes and 26 seconds. That’s, like, really long. And I have to start thinking about what sort of outfit I’m going to wear today and to devote 9 minutes and 26 seconds of my time to this is just…ludicrous. Yes, that is the appropriate word. And then we have that famous Diablo Cody backlash that I have to consider whilst watching. “Oh, Juno’s so great! Best movie ever! Wait, is it? I hate Diablo Cody!” That was literally the turn around of the DC good will. It happened exactly like that. And then some other things happened in Diablo Cody’s career and now here we are. Diablo Cody has a tiny talk show, Red Band Trailer. And I like it. I fear too much. To the point where I want her to be my friend, mentor and confidante. I want to call her D. Or Diabs. Or D Codes. And Adam Brody, her first guest, is charming. So charming. Seth Cohen but manlier charming. Anyway, if you have all of your affairs settled for the day and have 9 minutes and 26 seconds to spare, watch this:

I realize my reaction to this is similar to my reaction to Juno: Hesitance, Enjoyment, Complete and Utter Love, Over Reaction, Slight Shame, Annoyance, Resistance, Acceptance. Circle of life, really.

Watch: Howl Trailer

Before we watch the Howl trailer let me just say that I started out today very ambitious. First, I was going to write a post about how all Nordic movies are about incest and rich people, but then I could only think of three examples (Festen, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Insomnia). Then, I was going to do an open thread about how you guys felt about Zachary Levi being maybe cast as Superman and filling Brandon Routh’s tiny tiny (“doll size”-Dan Hopper) shoes. Then a cursory Internet search debunked that rumor. Now here we are. With the pretty as a peach trailer for Howl, a movie I would like to see. This is just eye candy. Sweet, sweet Jon Hamm-y James Franco-y eye candy, with a side of Jeff Daniels. I have no comment other than that. So here it is:

Woman Lies About Car Jacking: I Blame Jeremy London

Reports the UK Metro, the best source for things that happen in the US:

According to New Jersey authorities, the 23-year-old initially told police she got lost while driving on Sunday and asked a man for directions. She told them that the man pulled her out of the car at gunpoint and threw her to the ground.
According to the local Daily Journal newspaper, however, police say she later admitted that she picked up a man and let him drive, and the car crashed into a tree while they were ‘engaged in a sex act’. Officers say the car had been set on fire.

Oh, Jeremy London, what have you wrought? You of course will recall that Jeremy London said that he was kidnapped by gang members and forced to buy booze and do drugs. Now the old Jeremy London Excuse is going to be popping up everywhere. Instead of just saying, “I just watched that part in Parenthood where Mary Steenburgen gives Steve Martin a BJ in their mini van and then they get into a car accident and I thought that looked sort of fun,” she blames a mugger and then sets her car on fire. So Jeremy London of her. I mean, not really, but do you see what I’m saying? The ripple effects of the Jeremy London Excuse (JLE) have already started. Remember, Jeremy London is a professional act-or, he can maybe get away with these things. Think through your JLE’s before you execute them, or before you set your car on fire.

TOP CHEF RECAP: Farm Policy? Not “Chef-retaries Of Agriculture?”

This is a Recap of Top Chef D.C. (Season 7), Episode 5, entitled “Farm Policy”, originally airing on July 14th, 2010. I should quit right now because they didn’t name the episode “Chef-retaries Of Agriculture”, but I won’t because I have a heart of gold. Literally. I just died.

Please welcome our guest judge for the week, 5-star-chef and Match Game regular Patrick O’Connell:

This week kicks off like many reality show episodes do: with people talking about the recently eliminated contestants as though they died. “One day, you’re doing frantic democracy-themed cooking challenges with these people you’ve known for three days, and the next minute…SNIFF… they’re gone! NO DAY BUT TODAY…” Behold, Lynne & Arnold’s empty beds:

Were a guy and girl rooming together? No they were not. Meaning these are not Lynne and Arnold’s beds, they’re just two beds that nobody is in at the moment. Nice try, camera dude, but ya gotta wake up pretty early in the morning to fool Ol’ Beddypants Hopper over here. If it’s before 11 am, you will probably fool me.

After the jump, Angelo bangs the Quickfire, then drags his busy junk to the ol’ Sex Farm:

We then cut to Angelo giving Tamesha an unsolicited pep talk, telling her that basketball players don’t think about how to win the game, they think about how to win the championship, which is terrible advice and don’t look now my arm’s around you!

Not sure why this photo came out super-blurry. I think Angelo roofied my USB cable.

Ed then jumps on the “superfluous sexual tension” bandwagon and talks to Tiffany, but his attempts to out-creep Angelo are quickly washed away when the “Blue Crabs” Quickfire Challenge is announced, and Angelo declares “Well I had crabs, so it just brought back bad memories.” There was no reason for you to say this, Angelo, it was obviously a deliberate attempt to get another sound byte into the final edit. Nice try, though. We know you actually had gonorrhea.

The chefs slaughter the crabs mostly uneventfully — Tamesha has never cooked with crab, Kenny calls himself a beast, and O’Connell gets to say one word to every three chefs in his evaluations — and in the end, Ed wins immunity for his Thai-inspired crab with old bay. Kenny and Angelo finish as runners-up in the Top 3, just in case, you know, stuff ever changed. And Angelo got really excited when Patrick complemented his dish:

For the Elimination Challenge, the chefs will be preparing a meal using local ingredients from an organic Virginia farm, and they’ll all have to work together on one big team. This should work out fine — but how is Bravo gonna fill the time, because with everyone on one team, they’re all gonna get along so perfec–OH NO ANGELO AND KENNY ARE DISAGREEING! Oh dear God. Who could’ve foreseen this?

Quick, Timothy, go stand next to them and pretend you’re as good as they are!

There are so many cooks in this kitchen, it prompts Stephen to bring up the old cliche, “A penny saved is a penny earned, people!” Finally, the chefs agree to pair off into the previous week’s teams, which makes everyone happy except for Tiffany, who’s stuck with Timothy again, and Ed, who sure is subtle for a sex god:

Commercial break…hey, there’s redhead Kevin in an ad for Kikkoman!

Does Top Chef make the contestants sign American Idol “Own Your Soul Forever” contracts now too? See you in Ford ads with Taylor Hicks soon, Kevin!

The chefs arrive at the farm, and the food is just sitting there, unsupervised. They assume it is the food for them and start cooking it, occasionally borrowing ingredients from their “Toyota Mobile Pantry,” aka “trunk.” Timothy calls the Mobile Pantry “off the hook” — you made it that way, Timothy, by putting useful things in there before you left. If you put a bunch of gold coins in a car trunk, your Toyota Mobile Bank would also be off the hook.

Stephen wants to be the “forefrontrunner” — hopefully not of using correct words — and pulls a classic Top Chef “I know it’s simple, but…” salad that is destined for failure. Amanda is preparing a minestrone soup and makes the same mistake, saying “I know minestrone is pedestrian but…” Trouble Twins!

We break for the DVR-Buster segment which, for the first time in the excruciating history of these things, gives us a truly worthwhile screenshot:

Back on the farm, Angelo calls Tamesha’s cherry compote “sexy,” then jokes (jokes?) that he “made love to his dish.” Kevin’s cauliflower then spills on the ground, and Angelo races to start f***ing it:

The chefs finish their dishes and serve them to a group of elite chefs and farmers in an authentic farm fashion: On a big long table out in the middle of an empty field when it’s really cold out. FARM STYLE!

Padma tells the chefs “Thank you very much for this wonderful meal. We will now proceed to criticize it with amazing specificity.” The chefs then kinda stand there for a while as the people eat:

Patrick O’Connell says of Amanda’s soup, “The rusticity of everything is shocking,” which sounds like a super cheffy compliment, but the judges quickly pick apart her failure to cut/cook the vegetables evenly. Stephen’s salad then gets ripped on for being served in a bowl that doesn’t allow it to breathe (did you not have a pet toad when you were little, Stephen? Air holes, buddy). Timothy’s turnips and asparagus get ripped on too, completing the trifecta of expected-suck. Basically, the show seems to be back to normal after last week’s Chuck scare.

The Top 4: Kevin, Kenny, Andrea, Kelly

Andrea seemed to be headed for trouble when her Miami blood was getting cold, but she ended up pulling off her meat dish by cutting it into quarters; at the time, cutting the meat really seemed like something the editors left in to foreshadow her eventually having to defend herself at Judge’s Table, but she ended up doing fine. Kevin sneaks into the top as darkhorse, joining future season-finalists Kenny and Kelly. Kenny ends up winning Farmfest 2K10 with his sweet & sour curried eggplant, and responds with a gracious Top Chef “BLEEP.”

Bottom 3: Timothy, Amanda, Stephen

No surprises here – they comprised the Bottom 3 in my Top Chef Odds post yesterday (are you reading this, Mom? I’m good at something!) Amanda takes it on the chin when Eric Ripert calls her out for her “Minestrone” soup:

Amanda escapes yet again, though, when the judges are ultimately too disappointed with Timothy’s rash decision to throw asparagus into his dish at the last minute for color, which is weird, because usually when chefs on this show randomly throw an element into their dish at the last second without thinking, it always works out flawlessly and the judges uniformly high-five them.

On his way out, Timothy says “I’m looking forward to picking up the phone and growing old with these folks.” He then marries them. I cried.

NEXT WEEK ON TOP CHEF: The chefs judge each other. I wonder if it gets heated? Probably not. I’ll bet it gets cooled down. So that’s “Everyone placed on one team so they fight,” followed by “Everyone judges each other so they fight more”? Two weeks from now they’re just gonna have all the chefs fistfight to the death in a giant fire pit. Summer Sweeps!

Top Chef episode thoughts? Favorite/least favorite parts? Quotes? Who’s next to go? Does anyone have a shot against Angelo, Kenny and Kelly? Comment away.
