Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 16 Jul 2010 | 7:46 am Is Abhi-Ash jodi no longer hot and happening?
A leading newspaper carried a story yesterday on how the Abhi-Ash jodi is no longer considered 'Hot' in the trade circles after the debacle of Raavan. The duo had a lot of hopes on this Mani Ratnam biggie but it all came crashing down as the film turned out to be one big turkey at the ticket window.
Now, a lot of filmmakers are having two minds in casting the husband-wife duo together. Rajiv Menon, who was supposed to start his musical Dhun with Abhi-Ash, is yet to kick-start his project. While we really don't know the reasons behind the delay of that film, what we would like to know from you - the junta janardhan- is whether you indeed feel that the Abhi-Ash jodi has lost all fizz or are you still excited to watch them together on the big screen. Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 16 Jul 2010 | 6:42 am "Realistic films are easy, glam films are tough" - Bipasha Basu
'Oh this film has been the toughest in my career so far as it belonged to the real world'
'Because I had to go totally de-glam in the film, I had to work extra hard to gain audience attention'
'Working in this set up was the biggest challenge ever as it made me come out of a comfort zone and do something that was far closer to real life'
And so say most of the leading ladies when they act in a realistic film, deal with an issue based subject and go totally de-glam for a role. However, Bipasha Basu has a different take on the state of affairs and this is what makes her stand apart from the crowd. Making no big deal about doing films where she is required to wear minimal make up, she instead goes on to state that working in such films is far easier than the 'fantasy world' of hardcore commercial blockbusters.
"Because of the kind of person that I am, I am constantly on the edge while working in commercial entertainers. When you do something which is frothy and frivolous, you are really conscious because there are some intellectuals who are out there to judge you. It becomes a far tougher setup than a realistic one", says Bipasha who has made her career out of being an ultra glam woman who definitely knows her style statement.
"But I had to learn on the job", says Bipasha who is currently in the 10th year of her professional career, "I wasn't brought up in a surrounding where I was in the midst of film talks and filmy people 24X7. Acting also just happened by chance. Even when I decided to take on acting as a full profession, I didn't go to any acting school. I learnt everything on the sets. It took me a lot of time to break my inhibitions. When I look back, I am actually glad about all that I had to go through."
She is not convinced with the theory that actors worldwide are taken far more seriously once they do realistic films.
"That's wrong actually", she says immediately, "This has happened to me first hand though. When Corporate happened, quite a few people said that I have proved myself as an actor. Then when my Bengali film Shob Charitro Kalponik arrived, there were all the more praises that came my way. But still, I stand by my statement that these films were easier to do. Reason being that these are much more believable and humane. They didn't put much stress on me."
It's a different world though for Bipasha when she acts in an out and out commercial entertainer.
"When I have to go glam, do dance numbers and create this fantasy like world, it becomes really tough for me", she admits, "Having said that, I feel that whatever I do means a lot to me as an actor. Some of these commercial flicks may not be serious cinema but then there is a lot of credibility required since you are entertaining audience at the end of the day. This is the reason why every film is like a challenge to me."
Now that she is on her way to complete a decade in Bollywood, is she looking at taking a deep breath and figuring out how exactly does she wish to plan the decade to come?
Says Bipasha after a hearty laugh, "Can I shatter your illusion and say that 'No, I haven't really thought on these lines'? Really, I am not so deep with such far fetched thoughts and plans. I am a very grounded person and have enjoyed my life the way it has been. Nothing has been planned in my professional career so far and I have gone by guts. Am I enjoying it all? Oh, of course yes. Now that I am enjoying it all, I am not into any planning mode. Till all of this stays interesting enough for me, I am on. What I am clear about though is that once the going gets bad, I am not going to be a part of this world."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 16 Jul 2010 | 4:58 am Kashinath wants his son to fight for Kannada filmsRecently, the recording of songs for the movie 12 AM was held at Chamundeshwari Studios on last Saturday. He has done retrospection and found out that lack of the promotion was the reason behind the failureSource: Oneindia.in - Entertainment | 16 Jul 2010 | 3:59 am Kangna's real life role model in OUATIM revealed
There is no denying the fact that Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai has fast turned out to be one of the most awaited films of the season. Credit it to the Ajay Devgn factor as he seems to be walking in straight from the days of Company, the charm of Emraan Hashmi who seems to be on a role reversal of sorts after Gangster, the music by Pritam which has everything going right for it, the Bobby nostalgia that has been created by Prachi or the mystery called Kangna Ranaut which seems to follow her film after film.
Kangna Ranaut - a mystery, something that led to names like Madhubala and Meena Kumari being thrown around as the reference points for the role of an actress that she plays in this Milan Luthria directed film. Still, there was no concrete information coming in from any quarters. Now that the film is just a few days away from release, a couple of shocking truths have been revealed.
First and foremost, it has been declared that Kangna's character is indeed based on an actual heroine from the 70s. Secondly, the actress in picture is neither Madhubala nor Meena Kumari but a small time actress whose name was Sona. A girl who had actually acted in a couple of Bollywood films in the 70s, Sona was also the love of Haji Mastan on whom Ajay Devgn's role in the film is based. Since Kangna plays the female lead opposite him, it was obvious that the reference point was Sona.
"Well, I have been told that Haji Mastan was in love with this girl called Sona", Kangna says in a hush-hush tone, "She was a Madhubala look-alike and a struggler during the 70s. When the two came together, they became romantically involved. He even went on to make a movie for her."
A quick Google search assures that Kangna's claims were indeed true. Sona did actually work in a couple of films though the one which was notable was Raj Khosla's Kuchche Dhaage where she had Vinod Khanna, Moushumi Chatterjee and Kabir Bedi for company. Incidentally, another striking factor about this casting and the film was that Moushumi's screen name here was, as you guessed it right, Sona.
Cut to 2010 and there are obvious similarities in Kangna's characterisation. As Rehana - an actress, she plays the love interest of Sultan (played by Ajay Devgn) who is a don in the Mumbai of 70s. "Rehana is basically a cross between Madhubala and Sona. She is really desired and is madly loved by Sultan", confirms Kangna.
Unlike Sona though, Kangna gets the perks of playing a superstar instead of a struggler in the film. "Ajay's character feels connected to her because he knows her only through the big screen. Once the two fall in love, Rehana becomes really vulnerable. You can say that while Ajay is the positive force of the film, Emraan is the negative force and I am the romantic force."
Of course Kangna, we would like to believe that!Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 16 Jul 2010 | 3:54 am "Ex-militant carried an AK 47" - Rahul DholakiaRahul Dholakia is a National Award winning director but he is not wearing this as an ace up his sleeves. This is what has been decided by the producer and co-directors of Race 2.
"Kareena is to be paired with John because they've never been teamed together before. This depends on the two resolving their personal differences. But Bipasha is a no-no with John and with Saif because that pairing was done in Race. The idea is to bring in fresh pairs. So while Kareena would be with John, Asin might be teamed with Saif in Race 2," says a source very close to the project.
There is no information on who would be paired with Anil Kapoor.
Race 2 has got its leading men - Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and John Abraham in place. But the three top leading ladies are being kept under wraps.
Abbas-Mustan are not talking about the casting of the girls because his producer Ramesh Taurani is now in Colombo for his daughter's wedding.
No one from the film industry is expected to attend the wedding on 18 July. Taurani, it seems, has flown in only close friends and family.
In the meanwhile the final call on the female casting of Race 2 is frozen.
Says director Abbas, "We'll take a final decision once Rameshji returns from Colombo. We've got two back-to-back action films Italian Job and Race 2 to shoot for two different production houses (Studio 18 and Tips, respectively). It's a big responsibility because both are big-budgeted multi-starrers to be shot in eye-catching locations and with huge action scenes. Luckily for us, Italian Job is heist film and Race 2 is a caper. So there's no overlapping."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 16 Jul 2010 | 3:03 am Numerologist predicts Tere Bin Laden to rock at BOThere are some ‘small’ but different films with interesting titles, concepts, bunch of actors etc. which instantly catches your attention from the day their promotion starts and you know it – “I wanna watch this one, for sure!” at your nearestSource: Oneindia.in - Entertainment | 16 Jul 2010 | 3:02 am Surya watches Singam with his fans in BengaluruKollywood star Surya was recently the center of attraction for all when he landed in Bengaluru to be present at the magnificent launch of the film Jogayya. They say that there is no question in this world that is without an answer. But, we tell you that there indeed is a certain question that even Gods fail to answer! And the question is that 'Where on Earth did the Lord Almighty get the patience and the right amount of perfection when He made Katrina Kaif, the phenomenon who celebrates her birthday today!'
For starters, Katrina is the very same lady, who was born to a Kashmiri Muslim father and a British Christian mother. Katrina, before her graduation from the prestigious Harvard University, got a life changing opportunity to say Cheese to the glam world. Lucky we! And the rest they say is history. The year gone by has seen Katrina rising high and higher. Right from the films that she does till her brand endorsements, she is superhit by all means.

There was nothing that Katrina would have liked better on her birthday on Friday, than to be with her family in London. In fact, she had planned and plotted for months and weeks to make her birthday wish come true.
But then, 'Star proposesâ¦Producer disposes'. Just when Katrina took a break from her shooting in Spain from Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara to spend the days leading to her birthday in London her plans were thwarted.
Now Katrina has to return to shoot in Pampolona for Zoya's film a day before her birthday.
Trying hard to conceal her disappointment about being deprived of her annual family get-together, Katrina says, "Yes, I had planned well in advance to spend my birthday with my family in London. But some scenes for Zoya's film have been rescheduled, and I've to go back on Thursday, a day ahead of my birthday, to Spain. Never mind. I'll be working on my birthday and that's the best way to bring in my birthday."
Looking at the brighter side, Katrina says, "My two youngest sisters, Isabella and Sonia, are coming back to Spain with me, so I have a part of my family with me. And I couldn't hope to be with a better unit on my birthday. Zoya Akhtar is one of the coolest directors I've worked with."
Looking at the year that was Katrina says, "I got to work with two women directors Zoya and Farah Khan this year. And they were both such fun to work with. I also had a big hit Raajneeti. I couldn't have asked for more. In the coming year, I hope to find love. Every girl needs someone to share her life with."
Katrina returns to India next month to face one of her biggest challenges as an actress. On August 11, she has to perform an item song with Akshay Kumar for Farah Khan's Tees Maar Khan.
Sighs Katrina, "It is like no other item song. It will have elements from both Indian and western dance forms. It will blend various styles and give me a chance to perform what could possibly be my most challenging on-screen dances. I can't wait to return and start rehearsing for the number."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 15 Jul 2010 | 8:54 am "Bollywood writing is entertainment style, not cinema style" - Dibakar Banerjee: Part 2

UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel brings you Part 2 of Dibakar's quest for cinema.
Film Festivals
Whenever I go to the film festivals around the world, I look out for the documentary type of films and small films which are alternate cinema. There were two films which caught my attention at the Munich Film Festival. One was an Italian film called Videocracy. It's about the power of television in trusting a political agenda down on the people of the nation as the political propaganda. The second one was a docu-drama called Defiant Brasilia. It's about a girl from a lower middleclass neighbourhood in Brasilia who wants to be a participant in Big Brother. It follows the journey of this girl. I was looking for films like these. Both these films prepared me for the political thriller I'm making next.
Political thriller
My next film is a political thriller. A true life incident that happened in Greece in 1963. A book was written about the same in the year 1966 and we have negotiated the rights for that book and are adapting that into an Indian story. It's about a political assassination but it also portrays an underlining message that how politics means different things to different people.
Approachability
Whoever calls me, I ask them to simply send me a registered screenplay. You will be surprised, only five to ten percent follow it up. Most of them are about the guys who want to narrate me a story or an idea or a concept. That doesn't work for me. I would rather work on my own concept and own story. It takes time to build a concept into a story and that into a screenplay. It takes a year and a half to do that. I am most welcome to new writers writing for me as long as I get what I want. Within six or seven months of reading the script, I definitely send a feedback. For the content to find the right form, the story has to be with me for a year at least. There are some films which shoot the script and there are some which filter the script. The latter is the kind of film I would like to make.
Imran Khan
Imran isn't a young protégé. He is a young talent of our industry. I wanted to work with him on a political thriller, but at that time, he was looking for a romantic comedy to work on. Therefore, it didn't work out. It doesn't also mean that because I've worked with Imran Khan on two Coke commercials, that I'll jump on to him to do a feature film together. The actor too has to look at his own career graph more than just say 'yes' to all films coming to him.

The very name of the film Road, Movie raised many an eyebrow, thanks to the unique title that it enjoys. As you all know by now, that the film starred the suave dude Abhay Deol opposite the very talented Tannishtha Chatterjee alongwith the multitalented Satish Kaushik.
Sources close to Bollywood Hungama have said that the screenplay for Road, Movie has been selected by the permanent collection of The Margaret Herrick Library at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, Satish Kaushik confirmed the news and said, "It's a great feeling that I experienced when Dev Benegal told me the script of the film has been selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. I am aware of the fact that this is a place that's home to many big films. And with the inclusion of Road, Movie, our film has got an immense boost. Also, it's a great opportunity that the film has been appreciated all over the world. Lastly, I would like to say that Dev has got a great thing going for him with this achievement."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 15 Jul 2010 | 7:32 am Angelina is perfect spy: 'Salt' directorAustralian director Phillip Noyce of "The Bone Collector" fame loves telling spy stories.Source: Entertainment News | 15 Jul 2010 | 5:47 am 'Lamhaa' banned in UAE - directorMUMBAI (Reuters) - A new Bollywood film that puts the spotlight on the Kashmir issue has been banned in the UAE, the director of the film said.Source: Reuters: Bollywood News | 15 Jul 2010 | 5:18 am Milan Luthria's next will be thriller starring Emraan Hashmi
Milan Luthria the director of Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai is simply on a roll. Deep into promotional activities for his film, he already has the platform set for his next. A project that is ready and slated to go on floors in September will feature Emraan Hashmi in the lead. Says Milan, "A lot of expectations are attached to Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai that carries on to my next. Emraan and my combination works and therefore he is a natural choice. This film will be a crime thriller set in contemporary Mumbai."
When asked about the story line of the film Milan says "It's a kind of a trilogy that started with Taxi No 2011. That too was a story set in Mumbai and so is Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. The three films are not connected but are separate stories, though they have the same feel of Mumbai city. This third story is quite interesting and has a novel and unexpected ending."
While this one is all ready to go on floors, there is another film with Ekta Kapoor that Milan is in the talks for. Says the director, "Yes Ekta discussed an idea with me for a story. It's called The Dirty Picture. Ekta and I are very comfortable with each other. So it was natural for us to work together."
But that isn't all; Milan has the ball rolling for yet another project as he talks about a prospective film with Ajay Devgn. "Good offers are coming my way. Ajay and I have always worked together. I shared the story with him and he liked it very much. It's too early to talk about it but I can tell you that it will be a multistarrer."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 15 Jul 2010 | 4:20 am "I'd like to act in a film next" - Punit Malhotra
Punit Malhotra who's just helmed a hit for Karan Johar's Dharma Productions is hoping someone would notice him and cast him as a leading man next.
"I won't cast myself in my next directorial project. I can't direct and act together. But I'd like to act in a film next. An actor is what I came here to be," says Punit.
Would he be willing to be cast in a film written by Shobha De? Punit passes. "I'd get spanked on the sets every day."
But before that, Punit is off on a holiday.
Is the I Hate LUV Storys (IHLS) director joining his leading Sonam Kapoor in Edinburgh where she is shooting for Mausam? The buzz about the director seeing his leading lady just got stronger with people close to the two whispering that after the film's success, the film's director is off to spend quality time with her in Edinburgh.
Though Punit, euphoric with the success of IHLS, admits he's off on a holiday, he completely denies he is love-bound.
"I am not going to Scotland. I am going to the US for my holiday. I've lots of friends there, I want to catch up with before I begin to plan my next film. If you want, I can send you pictures of me posing at the Statue of Liberty," he offers.
Apparently, the success party has also been put off until Punit returns from his holiday. The fact that Sonam too will be back home in a month is just a coincidence. Once Punit returns, he will start work on his next film. "It won't be a rom-com," he promises. But yes it will star his pals Imran Khan and Sonam again.
And if you thought the young filmmaker would be embarrassed and apologetic about his run-in with columnist -writer Shobha De who threatened to spank him after watching IHLS, you are quite wrong.
In fact Punit says he removed his shrivelling retort to Shobha's comment only because his mother asked him to. "My mother gave me hell about my remark on Shobha De. She wanted to know how I could talk someone my mother's age that way. Of course I wouldn't say such a thing to anyone! I've been brought up to respect my seniors. But if you going to talk about spanking a 28-year old, you better be prepared to face the music."
Punit says he has no problems with the bad reviews for his film. "It's a free country. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. And I respect everyone's opinion. But you can't spank me if you didn't like my film. We aren't living in the Taliban. No, I am not at all apologetic about what I said."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 15 Jul 2010 | 3:53 am
