Last Night on Late Night: Kristen Chenoweth's Potty Mouth Makes an Appearance on The Late Show

Usually late night television is the land where penis jokes reign supreme, but last night Kristen Chenoweth did her best to balance things out with a bleep filled segment on The Late Show that focused on a couple of different ways to say the word "vagina". In this clip, the Promises, Promises star describes to David Letterman how she uses Twitter with a word not meant for television. Well, maybe British TV. Up next on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, a Nic Cage story about his favorite magic trick turns into an impressive Aaron Neville impersonation by Jimmy and over on The Tonight Show Jennifer Love Hewitt gives us some advice about what not to wear when using a treadmill at the gym. Last but not least, Inception star Marion Cotillard tries to understand what the hell Craig Ferguson is talking about in the most adorable way imaginable. Watch our compilation to see what you missed.

Industry Roundup: David O. Russell Departs Nailed, Disney Into Gargoyles

Nail In The Coffin: The long-delayed Jessica Biel-Jake Gyllenhaal “political satire/romantic comedy” Nailed has lost writer/director David O. Russell. Russell did not offer an explanation to the Hollywood Reporter as to exactly why he was unable to reach an agreement with financier Ronald Tutor, who controls the rights to the movie. The studio plans to actually hire a different director to finish up the movie and film reshoots (which would involve Biel and Tracy Morgan). The movie was shut down four times during production in 2008 by the guilds due to money not being paid on time. Hate to break it to these guys, but at this point it really seems like this movie just does not want to be made. [HR]

Gargoyles!: Disney is developing an untitled gargoyles project, and the studio is close to hiring Zoe Green to come up with a story about the stone creatures. While the project aims to “build a mythology around the carvings,” the actual plot will be set in modern times. Perhaps this is a sign that by 2014, we'll be making a list of all the gargoyle rip-offs. [Heat Vision/HR]

Amazon Trail: Chockstone Pictures has picked up the film rights to Monte Reel’s nonfiction book The Last of the Tribe: The Epic Quest to Save a Lone Man in the Amazon. And Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) is attached to direct. The tome examines the search for the last surviving member of an Amazon tribe, “from the perspective of the government agents charged with both verifying his existence and preserving his way of life.” The screenplay will be adapted by Mark Bailey, whom we're hoping will take care of that unwieldy title. [Variety]

Teamed With Cook: True Blood’s Sam Trammell has joined the cast of the indie crime thriller Guns, Girls and Gambling, which stars Dane Cook, Christian Slater and Gary Oldman. Trammell will play a “no-nonsense sheriff” partnered with a corrupt one (Cook). Thankfully Trammell's used to dealing with all sorts of troublesome cooks. [Variety]

Where There's A Will: Ridley and Tony Scott are producing Archangels, a sci-fi film from newcomer Andrew Will, which will be directed by Joe Kosinski (Tron Legacy). The script is a Bourne-style thriller with alien elements, with a lead who is “part of an elite force that is tasked with tracking aliens who get past Earth’s defense system.” [Variety]

Neon Lights: Still riding the buzz from last year’s Psychic Chasms, Neon Indian will be touring North America this fall, with a series of dates opening for Phoenix in late September. [Pitchfork]

The Armies Didn't Gather In Time To Help Rick Barber

The Tea Party candidate - who released perhaps the most bizarre of the very, very bizarre ads out of Alabama as of late - was crushed in the state's 2nd district runoff Tuesday night. Martha Roby easily earned the Republican nod over Barber, who has equated the administration's economic policies to slavery, and she will take on Democrat Bobby Bright in November. Barber, meanwhile, is probably venting his frustration to his Colonial-era BFFs this evening. [WP]

Hawaii 5-0 Trailer Features Lush Scenery, Flashy Stunts and Affable Scott Caan

The extended trailer for the eagerly-anticipated Hawaii 5-0 reboot suggests it may very well stand out amongst CBS’s roster of crime-based procedurals, law-based procedurals, and, um, other procedurals. The stunts look surprisingly "un-TV" (in a good way) in their scale and execution. And the visuals - both the actors and the landscapes - promise to help fill the voids left behind by Lost on both those fronts. While it’s fun seeing Daniel Dae Kim on screen in a new role (speaking his native tongue seems to have loosened him up a bit), the standout of the trailer is actually Scott Caan, who gets the clip’s quippiest lines. Unfortunately, they still don’t have the theme music quite right; at least they have some time until September to get it right.

BP Delays Testing of New Cap

It will probably come as a surprise to no one that Monday's optimistic report from BP about the potential end of the oil spill now seems like it may have been a bit premature. The pressure test on the newly-installed cap - scheduled to begin Tuesday - has been delayed, U.S. officials said Tuesday night. Coastguard Admiral Thad Allen said the testing process “may benefit from additional analysis that will be performed tonight and tomorrow." [Reuters]

Rescue Me Recap: Don’t Call It a …

It’s Tommy’s first official day back, and because he’s taking in the firehouse’s daily activities through new eyes, we too get a more in depth glimpse at the regular goings-on of the 62 Truck crew. Most Rescue Me episodes involve one big call with either plenty of saves or epically tragic results — this week, in a welcome change of pace, we saw that some days bring big rescues (Peter Gallagher at last, as a priest a little too attached to his statue of the Virgin Mary!), while others bring puking heroin addicts who need an ice bag on their balls.

Things start off on a familiar note: Tommy and Janet arguing in an uncomfortable manner (Tommy’s weak attempts at witty banter; Janet’s less than excited response). This time, he’s pouring all of Colleen’s booze down the drain, while making a questionable argument for wine as non-alcoholic beverage (“Wine is like, a delicacy. Grape juice with a little extra kick”). Leary and Andrea Roth are doing a commendable job of demonstrating just how much the fire’s gone out of their marriage — where once we felt a spark of chemistry, there is now just boredom (ours). Thank goodness for Franco, who’s upped the jealousy ante by taking private calls from Janet — on Tommy’s phone (we particularly love when he gives her advice on “dressy” pants and calls her “silly”).

Back at the firehouse, Tommy’s greeted with none of the fanfare he expects, finding the guys are more interested in burping contests and, later, a newfound rivalry with 74 Truck (“We’ll settle this at cookoff!”). Damian continues to become everyone’s favorite kid to hate, trash talking his uncle to Needles; Garrity and Mikey (who we learn prefers “French-Thai fusion” for lunch; hilarious and believable) hatch a harebrained plan to prove their intellectual mettle to the crew by enlisting in a high brow service project. One great little character arc this episode: Garrity and Black Shawn, who begin fighting like teenagers, go down together to save a teenage boy stuck in a hole, and come out again like brothers, with Black Shawn advising Garrity to talk to firefighters about disease associated with Ground Zero. Then again, we may also just be digging on Larenz Tate’s talents right now (we’re still remembering his “Love Jones” reunion with Nia Long at the BET Awards. Hot!).

All seems like business as usual, but surreal, “is Tommy still dead or isn’t he?” moments still punctuate the episode. We’re most struck by Tommy’s odd street encounter with Mick and Teddy, who arrive bearing a bottle of top shelf Irish whiskey (in a wooden box that looks not unlike a little coffin), calmly declaring that they’ve officially given up on Tommy. “I love you, but I’m out of bullets, both literally and figuratively,” says Teddy. “What comes next ain’t gonna be pretty,” Mick adds. “Gonna miss you. Stay low.” It’s like a visitation from ghosts — as is, momentarily, Sheila’s late night drop-in. At first, it’s a typical Sheila-Tommy tete-a-tete, with the overbearing mom harping on about what Tommy’s doing to get Damian off the job. Then Damian arrives, screams something or other at Sheila that we can’t hear, and, eerily, she’s releasing Tommy from watcher duties, waving to the guys in the truck — who are on the way to a burning church. Creepy!

Maybe it’s all just a reminder of what Lou tried to teach Tommy this week: “Sooner or later, the machinery breaks down; there’s no shame in being on the other side of the peak.” Or, the world goes on with or without Tommy Gavin as conquering hero, and perhaps the heroic choice, at this point, is to own up to aging and lay back a bit. Tragically, Tommy now has a very concrete reminder of what might happen if he doesn’t consider some moderation in his life — we end the episode seeing Lou, face down on the firehouse floor, apparently passed out … and hopefully not dead! (We need to get through this season plus another, writers!) We have a feeling Peter Gallagher will have something pithy to say about it next week.

New Orleans Cops Charged For Post-Katrina Civilian Shootings

Holder, who announced the indictments.

Six police officers were charged by U.S. prosecutors Tuesday in connection with shootings that took place on a New Orleans bridge in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Two were killed and four were wounded in the September 4, 2005 incident. The officers had initially posited their firings were justified because they had been shot at first, but federal prosecutors rejected the claim. The case - in what the Journal calls “perhaps the most vivid and painful example of the confusion and lawlessness that pervaded the city after the storm” - stirred up racial tensions, as the officers were mostly white and most of the victims on the bridge were black. Attorney General Eric Holder, in New Orleans for today’s announcement, said that tying up the unresolved case was one of the first things he prioritized when taking over his post. "We will not tolerate wrongdoing by those who have sworn to protect the public," he added.

Julia Roberts and Ryan Murphy To Team Up Again On Rom Com

Sony apparently is so pleased with how the actress and director collaborated on Eat Pray Love (which isn’t out until August 13) that they have made “one of the year’s biggest pitch deals” and paired up Roberts and Murphy for another project. The Glee co-creator will make $5 million in total for writing and directing the Roberts vehicle, in which she'll play a working woman who is forced to “adjust to motherhood” when she loses her job (and her stay-at-home hubby has to head back to work). Despite this fruitful professional partnership, Roberts won’t be showing up in the halls of McKinley High anytime soon: “No, Julia will not be doing [Glee],” Murphy said Monday.

According to the New York Times, the America’s Got Talent judge will be announced as Larry King's replacement imminently, as a deal is being finalized between the parent companies of CNN and NBC (home to Talent). A contract could reportedly be signed within a few days, based on the intel of three people involved in the negotiations. The choice of Morgan, known as the “mean judge” on Talent’s panel has “baffled many people inside CNN,” the Times says. The 45-year-old is considered one of the top interviewers in Britain, though, where he hosts Piers Morgan Life Stories, on which he’s interviewed the likes of Gordon Brown and Simon Cowell, whom we have to thank for the selection.

Rodarte's Latest Creation Inspired by Ancient Skull

Rodarte’s hand-stitched frocks and cobwebby crocheted knits may not scream “high-tech,” but the sisters Mulleavy have partnered with The Los Angeles County Museum of Art on a decidedly futuristic project.

The museum commissioned the designers to be the latest participants in "Cell Phone Stories," a smart phone-ready series of narratives that asks creative types to reinterpret works in LACMA’s permanent collection. Kate and Laura Mulleavy drafted five fashion sketches, the first of which is a floaty tile-patterned bondage frock inspired by an ancient turquoise-encrusted Mexican skull housed on the museum’s fourth floor. The rest of Rodarte’s art-inspired creations will be available for ogling on Thursday; just text “LACMA” to 67553 to have the drawings sent to your phone. And in the meantime, more info on the project can be found here.

Attorney General Candidate Eric Schneiderman Gets Attention for the Wrong Reasons

Last night, a car carrying Democratic attorney general hopeful Eric Schneiderman in the passenger seat rear-ended a parked car while it was pulling away. Schneiderman's car left the scene while a bicyclist jotted down his license-plate number and waited for the owner of the parked car, which suffered approximately $3,000 in damages. Unluckily for Schneiderman, that owner turned out to be NY1 executive editor Melissa Rabinovich. Schneiderman, for his part, claims in a statement that he didn't realize the car had been damaged until Rabinovich called his office this morning. Either way, in a primary race with four other Democrats, none of whom voters really know anything about, Schneiderman is now in danger of becoming "the hit-and-run guy."

AG Hopeful Eric Schneiderman Involved In Hit-And-Run [Daily Politics/NYDN]

Update: NY1 is now reporting that the driver of the car was Schneiderman staffer Rachel Kagan. Yep, that's right: Elena Kagan's niece. The only way this story could get stranger was if Andrew Cuomo was hiding in the trunk.

The DVD Queue: Play the Chloe Guess-the-Crazy-Ending Game, and Debate Whether Greenberg Is Irritating in a Good Way

See Amanda Seyfried’s sexpot seduce Julianne Moore in Chloe.
Atom Egoyan delivers about 90 percent of a fantastic film as Moore plays a suspicious wife who hires a bombshell prostitute (Seyfried) to seduce her husband (Liam Neeson). The increasingly nutso relationship between the wife and obsessed escort is genuinely tense, as kinky screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson (Fur, Secretary) gins up the sexual tension. The plot kicks, the tension builds, and the sex is wickedly hot. Then it all goes haywire with a ludicrous conclusion. But what’s terrible for the film can be great fun for your DVD night. Here’s an interactive DVD feature that isn’t included in the box: At the 85-minute mark, turn off your TV, and ask everyone in your living room to jot down their worst, most tasteless idea for how to end the movie. After the film’s real, wretchedly nonsensical and horribly disappointing conclusion, open the pieces of paper and compare answers. Anyone who can come up with something worse is a winner! (Advice: Don’t play this game with M. Night Shyamalan.)

Is Noah Baumbach's Greenberg irritating in a good way? Or Not? Fight with a friend!
Few recent films have triggered such equal loathing and love as Greenberg, and it’s all thanks to Ben Stiller’s irritating, contemptuous, cynical prick of a main character. There’s a monster-movie element to the way the plot progresses, as Greenberg’s noxious, cynical, aging-hipster persona inexorably expands and envelopes his younger, malleable love interest/victim (Greta Gerwig). “There’s nothing to do except wait for the protagonist to appall you one more time,” New York’s David Edelstein wrote in his review. But it’s not all horror show. From Kicking and Screaming to The Squid and the Whale, Baumbach has always been a sharp, perceptive chronicler of overeducated Gen-X malaise, and he at least uncorks a brilliant riff in the middle of a young-folks house party, where the grousing Greenberg is utterly out of his element. Stiller’s stoned, envious riff on the mysterious youth of today — that inconceivable optimism, that freakish lack of irony! — is one of the most sharply written scenes of the year.

The Greatest might not be the greatest — but Carey Mulligan is pretty great …
So maybe you read all the hype over Carey Mulligan, but An Education didn’t quite convince you that she’s the next big thing? Maybe Shana Feste’s film will do the trick. Mulligan (who next stars in Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go) plays the pregnant girlfriend of a dead kid, whose parents (Susan Sarandon and Pierce Brosnan) take her in — and, yes, the overliteral melodrama grinds at times. But with arguably weaker material than she was given in An Education, and without any cute 1962 costumes, Mulligan proves she just may be the greatest, able to hang with Sarandon and make even a middling film something great.
For more, read our interviews with Carey Mulligan and Pierce Brosnan.

Visit Alabama’s den of sin in the Film Noir Collection Classics: Volume 5
By the time you get to volume five of any DVD series, you’re reaching deep into the archives. Warner’s latest crime-flick garage sale offers up eight films you’ve never heard of: Cornered, Desperate, Dial 1119, Armored Car Robbery, Crime in the Streets, Deadline at Dawn, Backfire, and the fascinating The Phenix City Story. Phenix City, Phil Karlson’s tale of local Southern corruption, pits an upstanding war vet against the pimps and crooks of an Alabama town, and that town is the film’s real star. Shot documentary style, seedy, trashy Phenix City — “Alabama’s city of sin and shame,” the posters roared — is a great place to visit for 90 minutes.

Is The Bounty Hunter the worst film of the year? There's only one way to find out!

In late December, there will be arguments over which film is absolutely the worst film of the year. While The Last Airbender, Marmaduke, Killers, and Furry Vengeance will offer stiff competition, you really can’t ever rule out Jennifer Aniston (See: Love Happens, Along Came Polly, Rumor Has It), especially as an unconvincing crook thrown in a trunk by Gerard Butler. To prepare for your end-of-the-year Razzies pool, rent (do not buy) this one now. And in the meantime, see how Butler fared when compared with another famous bounty hunter, Boba Fett.

Also out this week:

‘This American Life’ Segment to Become a Movie

A segment of the radio show "This American Life" will be adapted into a film to be directed by Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace, Finding Neverland). It's based on the "TAL" episode "Heretics" (listen here), which tells the story of Carlton Pearson, an evangelical preacher ostracized by his church when he has the revelation that there is no hell. Perhaps "TAL" host Ira Glass can be petitioned to do the film's voice-over narration work, even though this is not a documentary.

Mort Zuckerman Is Not an Obama Speechwriter

After Daily News publisher and opinion columnist Mort Zuckerman said on Fox News that he had "helped write one of [President Obama's] speeches," actual White House speechwriters reacted with puzzlement. Neither Jon Favreau nor Ben Rhodes, who have "been closely involved in every speech the President has given since 2005," had "ever met or spoken to Mort Zuckerman," Politico reported. For anyone else, that would be awkward. But not for media mogul Mort! "Over the years I have been asked by various public officials, including those in Washington, for my perspectives and views on numerous issues. These conversations have always been considered confidential," Mort "clarifies" in a blog post on usnews.com today. "My point in noting during a recent television interview that I had once 'helped' contribute to one of Barack Obama's campaign speeches was to reflect the fact that my recent criticisms of the president came from someone who had been supportive of him, who had voted for him, and whose newspaper endorsed him." So ... it must have been one of Obama's very famous "nonsensical and unclear" speeches, then?

Bill Clinton Is an Expert in Talmudic Law

Clinton and Lew.

Jacob Lew is an Orthodox Jew. That rhymes, and it's also the background for a story, courtesy of First Read, about Bill Clinton trying to convince Lew to pick up the phone on the Sabbath, during Lew's first stint as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget:

Once, while working in [sic] President Clinton's director, Lew's home phone rang one Saturday. He didn’t answer and a familiar voice could be heard from the answering machine, urging him to pick up the phone. Mr. Clinton said he understood the sanctity of the Sabbath, but that it was important that he talk to Lew. He even said, it was later reported, that "God would understand."

It may appear at first that Clinton was just doing anything to get Lew on the phone, even making uninformed assumptions about God's personal feelings. And if he was wrong, eh, it's just eternal damnation in the eyes of the Lord. But it turns out Clinton was right after all.

Lew later consulted with his rabbi, who said that taking an important phone call from the President of the United States would be permissible on the Sabbath under the Talmudic teaching that work on the Sabbath is allowed in order to save a life.

Discussing the budget is "saving a life" now? That's a slippery slope, rabbi.

You Know What Predators Really Could Have Used? More Predators!

I woke up on Saturday morning with a raging hangover and twelve American dollars burning a hole in my pocket. I took care of my hangover the way I always do –hair of the dog! — but struggled for a few minutes figuring out what I could do with those twelve American dollars. After a few minutes of researching what I could procure for my moneys, you know what I spent it on? One adult ticket to go see Predators! Seeing as how I’m a sucker for both creature movies and nostalgia, I figured it would be a good way to kill a few hours (and save some money on my electrical bill for the air-conditioning I would’ve used). So I made my way over to the local multiplex, plunked down my cash and spent the next 90 minutes with my good buddies Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Laurence Fishburne, and, of course, the Predators.

However, when I left the multiplex a few hours later, I couldn’t help but feel like I didn’t quite get my money’s worth. Not just because I spent an additional five American dollars and fifty American cents on a 72 oz fountain drink, mind you, but because I felt like the film’s marketing campaign led me, the consumer, more than a little astray. If you’re interested in my tale, I encourage you to follow along. However, please note, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS.

You made it? Good! Back to business.

Don’t you just HATE it when movie studios include scenes in the trailers for movies that never actually happen in the finished product? I certainly do! For example, one of the key pieces of this film’s marketing campaign was my main man Adrien Brody staring into the face of certain death when not one, not two, but FIFTEEN Predators lined him up in the sights of their super fancy plasma-ray blasters (or whatever they’re called). This certainly indicated to me, the consumer, that there were gonna be a shit-ton of Predators in this movie! However, I regret to inform you that this scene DIDN’T ACTUALLY HAPPEN THIS WAY in the movie itself. In the finished product, there is but one Predator lining up the 2003 Academy Award winner in his (her?) sights. I am sad to report to you that there were WAY more Aliens in Aliens than there were Predators in Predators.

Just how many Predators were in the movie, exactly? Four! That’s right, FOUR. Four stinking Predators. I recognize that 20th Century Fox wasn’t breaking Webster’s definition by titling this movie Predators, but I certainly left the theater feeling as if Robert Rodriguez hoodwinked (or maybe even hornswaggled!) me. Perhaps if they would’ve titled the movie A Small Handful of Predators, A Few Good Predators or Just Four Predators, Really, I wouldn’t have felt so disappointed while walking out of the theater. Rodriguez admitted to MTV that he only put that exaggerated shot in the trailer to “crystallize the idea” that humans were being stalked by Predators, but if you ask me, it was little more than a downright lie. Hiss, boo, hiss!

And hey, while I’ve got ya, you wanna know what else was weird about the movie? At one point in the movie, one of the humans being hunted by the Predators actually calls the Predator that he’s shivving in the neck a “faggot.” Did we really need to go there, Mr. Screenwriter? Yikes.

Eviana Hartman Dresses Like a ‘Santa Fe Healing-Arts Practitioner Circa 1998’

Eviana Hartman in the Bodkin studio.

Eviana Hartman first moved to New York in 2000, landing a job as an editorial assistant at Vogue. From there, she climbed the fashion ladder, becoming a writer at Teen Vogue and the fashion features editor at Nylon. She eventually left the glossies behind to freelance, penning a column on environmental topics for the Washington Post. At the time, she was sharing an office with designer Samantha Pleet, and the two co-designed a small range of organic cotton pieces. The collection took off, and Hartman finally founded her own label, Bodkin, in 2008.

Last year, ecominded German brand Hessnatur tapped Hartman to design a capsule collection using all-natural fibers. The first collection launches this month (available online in the U.S.), and she's jetting off to Germany this summer to finish the spring 2011 collection. In the meantime, she's hunting for a larger studio space for Bodkin in New York and moonlighting as the drummer for the band Open Ocean; catch them August 7 at Memory Motel in Montauk. We chatted with the writer, drummer, and designer about dressing for Vogue, vintage hunting, and the paradox of bad style.

What inspires your designs?
Architecture and science, modern art, Scandinavian street style, and somewhat hazy memories of the style of the late nineties — but none of this is literal. I like the idea of clothes that are progressive for their time, yet subtle and useful enough to be enduring, like an Eames chair.

Who are your favorite designers?
Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto, Dries van Noten, Zucca, Acne, Christian Wijnants, Electric Feathers, and A.P.C.

What's the first designer item you ever bought?
I think it was a Marc Jacobs bag, when I first moved here and got the job at Vogue. I thought my serious job required a serious bag. Honestly, I can't stand big, glossy leather "It" bags. I'm a tote-bag-carrying Brooklyn girl.

Where do you like to shop in New York?
The Brooklyn Flea, Malin Landaeus, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, and Bird. I tend to support friends and neighbors.

Looks from the Bodkin fall collection.Photo: Courtesy of Bodkin.

How would you describe your personal style?
I guess it's slouchy and casual in spirit, and often a product of laziness. But it's also carefully calibrated to be different and hard to place: not a reflection of current trends, but not normal. It usually involves a combination of oversize comfy clothing, big jewelry, and platform shoes.

What trends are you appreciating right now?
I just got back from a few days in New Mexico, and I went crazy at one thrift store and bought all of this vintage Chico's art-mom stuff, like boxy tunics that I'll wear as minidresses, a long knitted vest, and a linen vest covered with shell buttons. Now I'm feeling like dressing like a Santa Fe healing-arts practitioner circa 1998 for the rest of the summer.

Any trends you're ready to see retired?
I'm sick of the "edgy" look: body-con, porkpie hats, and stilettos with angry hardware. But I actually don't mind that people are trendy. I don't mind bad taste or even mediocre taste. I'm always studying what people are wearing — bad style keeps my mind working.

What's one item you're saving to buy?
I may have to get a pair of Robert Clergie crepe-sole platform boots to get me through the fall and winter. Comfort and height are an elusive combination.

What's something you never leave the house without?
I have this men's cardigan from Muji that's made of the thinnest jersey. It rolls into a tiny ball in your bag, weighs maybe a few grams, and it's quite handy for countering blasts of air conditioning.

Fox Host: Bush and Cheney ‘Should Have Been Indicted’

Andrew Napolitano, the libertarian former judge who is the host of Fox Business Network's Freedom Watch (and a frequent Fox News talking head), broke from the network's pre-established narrative this weekend to voice views which are ... actually libertarian. Speaking with Ralph Nader on C-SPAN about the Bush Administration's tactics during their War on Terror, Napolitano said: "What President Bush did with the suspension of habeas corpus with the whole concept of Guantánamo Bay, with the whole idea that he could avoid and evade federal laws, treaties, federal judges and the constitution was blatantly unconstitutional and in some cases criminal." After Nader pushed, Napolitano declared: "They should have been indicted. They absolutely should have been indicted for torturing, for spying, for arresting without warrants. I'd like to say they should be indicted for lying but believe it or not, unless you're under oath, lying is not a crime. At least not an indictable crime. It's a moral crime." Moral crimes! That's the kind Fox News hates the most!

Videos Watched During Childhood Do Not Hold Up

When I was growing up, there were three VHS tapes that were very important to me. These were tapes that my family owned.  Because I was so intimately familiar with them, my pre-adolescent brain assumed everyone else knew about them as well and watched them all constantly.  The first tape was Top Gun.  You’ve heard of that one.   The second and third tapes, though.  Oh, man.  It’s so weird I thought everyone knew about them.

The second tape was a movie staring George Burns and Charlie Schlatter called 18 Again.  In this movie, Jack (George Burns) makes a wish on his 81st birthday that he was 18 again.  Then he gets into a car accident with his 18 year old grandson, David (Charlie Schlatter) and switches bodies with him.  Then Jack totally has to dance and sing a song about slutty girls for Red Buttons to prove he is actually Jack.

Awesome!  But that’s not really the thing I want to talk to you about.  What I really want to talk to you about is the third video, a video called Catskills on Broadway.

Catskills on Broadway was originally a Broadway show in the early 90’s that showcased comedians who used to perform in — or at least perform in the style of a person who used to perform in — the Catskills in the 1920’s-1960’s.  “What are the Catskills” you might ask.  It’s a Jewy mountain range. It’s a mountain range where New York Jews used to go on vacation.  And then comedians would go there and perform things that would make Jews laugh.

Anyway, I watched this video all the time.  It is what I thought comedy was supposed to be.  Except there was this one woman on the tape who I never really thought was funny.  She did impressions, many of which were impersonations of people I had never heard of, and she seemed a bit unstable.  A few weeks ago I went back and re-watched the tape.  And HOLY SH*T!  She is 50 times worse and 700 times crazier than I remember.  Her name is Louise DuArt.  First of all, she comes out on stage and sings a THEME SONG FOR HERSELF THAT IS ABOUT HERSELF!  And after she does that, she performs the following bit. This bit is long, that is for sure.  But even more than it is long, it is insane.  The slower moments have been fast forwarded so you don’t have to put up with them, but I promise I have removed nothing that makes this thing make more sense.  Get ready to lose your mind.

My mom should go to jail for letting me watch that.  That is not okay for a child to be watching multiple times a month.

Crystal Renn Landed the Fall Jean Paul Gaultier Campaign

Jean Paul Gaultier's fall 2010 ad campaign, which leaked on the Fashion Spot several hours ago, is missing what most magazines and advertisements almost always include: a straight-size white female. Instead Gaultier cast plus-size model Crystal Renn, along with Chinese model Ping Hue and French model Kelly Moirera. Inez and Vinoodh shot the campaign, which seems poised to renew discussions about whether or not Renn is losing weight and what retouching may have been at play.

Turns Out, Journalism Online’s Pay Wall Is Simple to Break Through

Remember when media entrepreneur Steve Brill was going to save journalism with his new commercial pay-wall service, which was eventually backed by News Corp.? Well, the service, Press+, has a few simple loopholes that render it completely penetrable, according to MinnPost.com. Press+ brass is aware of the problem, and isn't worried. "The fact that a small percentage of people may try to circumvent a modest charge for it and succeed in doing so for a short period of time must be seen in light of the fact that most won’t," the company said in a statement. "Put simply, you wouldn’t continue to make all books in a bookstore free simply because there may be some shoplifters temporarily able to swipe a few of them." Don't think about that metaphor too hard. Just go with it.

Vaseline Introduces Skin-Lightening Facebook App; New ‘Vampire Face-lift’ Is Bloody Disturbing

Hair
• Reese Witherspoon went platinum for her upcoming role in Water for Elephants. [Girls in the Beauty Dept./Glamour]

• Models Tomek Szczukiecki and Marcel Castenmiller sport flowy, highlighted locks in Versace’s latest menswear campaign. [Design Scene]

MAKEUP
• Amy Strozzi, Sarah Palin’s makeup artist, has been nominated for an Emmy — for her work on So You Think You Can Dance, not for any of Palin’s recent looks. [CNN]

SKIN
• Even plastic surgeons are cashing in on the vampire craze. The new “vampire face-lift” involves combining a fibrin mixture with the patient’s own blood and injecting it back into the face. [Jezebel]

• Snooki told Meghan McCain that she’s against the Obama administration’s tax on tanning booths. She voted for John McCain “because he was really cute,” but the Jersey Girl is registered as an Independent. [Daily Beast]

• Vaseline has launched a skin-lightening app for Facebook in India, so users can make their profile pics whiter. Even more upsetting is the fact that many of these lightening creams have health risks associated with them. [Feministing]

Check Out the New Christian Lacroix Menswear, Designed Without Christian Lacroix

Since Christian Lacroix cut ties with the label bearing his name after it went bankrupt and failed to find new investors, he hasn't been without freelance projects. After designing uniforms for French railway workers, the designer has been appointed the creative director of the French Mint, which means he's designing money, among other things, like the Marriage medal given to French people when they wed.

While he works on that, his label is chugging right along with its new designer, Sacha Walckhoff, who's been working at Lacroix since 1992. Walchoff told Fashionista he hopes to revive couture — Lacroix's true passion — and women's ready-to-wear one day. But, "We must first pay the debts," he said. His first full collection for the house is menswear, produced under licensee. Pants cost $260 to $310, jackets cost $1,100 to $1,400, and suits cost $1,600 to $2,300. It's unclear what category the overalls fall under.

Mel Gibson Calls Christian Bale (NSFW)

You knew the “Mel Gibson Phone Call” meets “Christian Bale Rant” mash-up was gonna materialize on the internet at some point, but now that it’s finally arrived — like some glorious, strategically-edited Christmas Morning — it’s even more amazing than I could’ve expected (language NSFW, obviously):

After the jump, an equally awesome Lethal Weapon mash-up. The internet’s coverage of this Mel Gibson tape should win seven Peabody Awards. Are there that many? There will be:

THINGS THAT EXIST: Lasagna Sandwich

Lasagna sandwich! And YOU said it couldn’t be done! Wait, you didn’t say that? You’re actually positive it’s been done before, and aren’t in any way surprised this exists because it’s hardly one of the top one billion odd things on the internet? Geez. Way to rain on my lasagna sandwich parade, so the bread gets all soggy.

Anyway, here’s the UK’s first mass-produced, portable lasagna sandwich:

Whoa, bread much? If that thing had any more bread, it’d be the 70s rock group Styx. Bread! I meant Bread. SH*T! Ruined a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’m rescinding my badge as Sheriff of Joketowne.

George Steinbrenner Dies At 80

Longtime Yankees owner George Steinbrenner passed away this morning at the age of 80 (sidenote – is that Nack guy on the ESPN page wearing a tux?):

NEW YORK — George Steinbrenner, who rebuilt the New York Yankees into a sports empire with a mix of bluster and big bucks that polarized fans all across America, died Tuesday. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday July 4.

Steinbrenner had a heart attack, was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and died at about 6:30 a.m. ET, according to multiple reports.

Sad story, but if the first line of your obit includes the phrase “bluster and big bucks,” your life has officially been a success.

In addition to his Yankees achievements, Steinbrenner will also forever be immortalized as a Seinfeld caricature, voiced by Larry David and always shot from a face-blocked “Dr. Claw” perspective:

A Deadspin reader also unearthed this ironic quote from Steinbrenner, strangely included in a YES Network tribute to the man:

Condolences to my longtime Yankee-fan friends out there. I’m sure Steinbrenner is getting ripped on for using all the resources available to him to win in a better place now.

Costco Charlie Would Really Like You To Sample This Hummus Please

I don’t know about you guys, but sometimes when my alarm goes off in the morning, I stretch out and reach for the off button while straining to mutter under my yawn, “I really would like to see an old man at Costco hard sell some already free samples.” Usually, that aimless requests leaves me with no YouTubes to watch.  But this morning was different.  This morning, Eliot at URLesque sent me this.

This isn’t your grandma’s hummus.  Oh, I’m sorry.  This is your grandma’s hummus?  And she threw away her pills?
