Industry Roundup: Kathryn Morris To Play Brad Pitt's Baseball-Loving Wife

Case Closed: Kathryn Morris (Cold Case) is in negotiations to star in Moneyball as the second wife of baseball GM Billy Beane (Brad Pitt). She “loves baseball as much as her husband, so she understands and shares his passion for the game.” Probably not too hard to get hooked on baseball (or, uh, anything) when the person convincing you is Brad Pitt. [Risky Business/HR]

FYI: Marlo Thomas has been cast as Demi Moore’s mother and Miley Cyrus’ grandmother in LOL, the remake of the Gallic hit film. In a related story, Marlo Thomas' granddaughter just got a frantic call from her grandmother asking what the hell "LOL" means. [Variety]

Wilde Thing: Peter Serafinowicz has joined the cast of the new Fox comedy Running Wilde as a regular after appearing in the pilot episode as Fa’ad Shaoulin, “a neighbor and frenemy” of Steve Wilde (Will Arnett). Serafinowicz appeared in Shaun of the Dead and voiced Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode 1. But lest you think he's all dark and gloomy, he also appeared in a Funny or Die sketch! With Arnett and Amy Poehler no less! [Deadline]

Hunting Season: Deerhunter is returning with their fourth LP, called Halcyon Digest, out on September 28. To promote the record, the band is asking fans to download a poster from their website, print it, tape it somewhere, photograph it and then e-mail the picture to them. Fans who follow these steps will be rewarded… with the album’s first single. Or, um, they can just sit around like everyone else and wait for it to pop up for free somewhere online. [Pitchfork]

Pirates-Like
: Paramount has picked up an original pitch from first-time screenwriters Willie Block and Jake Emanuel. The “high-concept action-adventure” combines “original ideas” with the Hunchback of Notre Dame story. The plot is said to be “in the vein” of Pirates of the Caribbean. [Risky Business/HR]

Rihanna Cancels Five Dates On Summer Tour

Rihanna’s tour is the latest to be hampered by poor ticket sales this summer. According to Live Nation, Rihanna - who is out on the road with Ke$ha and Travie McCoy - has had to cancel dates in Denver, Indianapolis, Phoenix, Dallas and Atlanta on her Last Girl on Earth tour. Not all tours are struggling, though -- the acts selling well this summer read like a Twihard’s “favorite music” list on Facebook: Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Muse, Taylor Swift… and, um, James Taylor with Carole King. YMCA Loses Three Letters

Organizations ranging from KFC to NPR to AARP have recently decided to make the common abbreviations for their companies into their formal names. And now the YMCA has joined the club, shortening its official name to “The Y.” The organization’s senior vice president and CMO explained that "when you call yourself what everyone else calls you," it's a way “of being warmer, more genuine, more welcoming." Hmm, there are a few companies we can think of who might not want to follow that advice. [NYT]

Jesse Jackson Believes Cavs Owner Saw LeBron As "Runaway Slave"

The day after LeBron James announced his decision to head to Miami, Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert issued a letter to Cleveland fans trashing James and promising to bring the town a title before James gets one. Today, Jesse Jackson criticized Gilbert for viewing James as a “runaway slave” and called the owner’s comments “mean, arrogant and presumptuous.”

"He speaks as an owner of LeBron and not the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers," Jackson said in a press release. "His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality. He sees LeBron as a runaway slave. This is an owner employee relationship — between business partners — and LeBron honored his contract."

Jackson went on to say that Gilbert’s comments are an attack on all NBA players, and that he should face a “challenge” from the league. Strangely, Jackson did not mention Gilbert’s egregious font selection in his critique.

Millions In Jeopardy Of Missing Their Mad Men

About 2.3 million Americans may be throwing vases and collapsing in their fainting couches come the July 25 Mad Men premiere if AT&T and AMC’s parent company don’t come to an agreement. AT&T’s U-Verse is threatening to drop AMC (home to Mad Men), as well as channels IFC and WE, when its contract with Rainbow Media Holdings expires July 14. The two companies have been negotiating for six months without coming to a resolution; an AT&T spokesman said Rainbow's channels are "among the least-watched and most overpriced per viewer." [NYDN]

Seth Rogen’s Untitled Cancer Movie Gets A Name

Seth Rogen’s upcoming cancer-based comedy has been gestating for a while now without a name. Previously known as I’m With Cancer and then more recently referred to uncomfortably as "Untitled Cancer Comedy," the project (which also will star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anna Kendrick and Anjelica Huston) has now been named Live With It. While the new title loses points for blandness and evoking the title of the upcoming Jennifer Aniston-Adam Sandler comedy Just Go With It, it deserves kudos for hinting at the subject matter without using The Big C word itself. Your Box Office Explained: The Little Green Men Save Despicable Me; and Was Predators a Robert Rodriguez Bait-and-Switch?

THE WEEKEND'S WINNERS: Even though its young target audience likely had little idea what "Despicable" meant, Despicable Me dominated with an estimated $60.1 million opening. That's a stunning opening for an animated movie that is neither a sequel nor a Pixar movie. (And speaking of Pixar, Toy Story 3 climbed to $340.2 million, making it the highest grossing film of 2010 so far, and the highest-grossing Pixar movie ever.) Meanwhile, the other big opener of the weekend, Predators, took third place (after Eclipse) with $25.3 million.

THE WEEKEND'S LOSERS: Technically, the concept of "funny" took a beating, considering that Grown Ups passed the $100 million mark . But there were no financial losers: In fact, the weekend's total take was up 43% over the same time period last year.

HOW IT ALL WENT DOWN: Despicable Me's giant opening is doubly shocking when you consider where it was just a month ago. Vulture obtained one firm's tracking numbers, and on June 16th, only 57% of people polled had general awareness of the film (when told the title, they recognized it), and only 26% expressed definite interest. These are not encouraging numbers for a big summer movie one month prior to opening, and some box office watchers started writing its obit early. But then Universal paired its trailer up with the behemoth Toy Story 3, and the numbers started rising. Posters ran everywhere, focusing less on the despicable main character (voiced by Steve Carell) and more on his little green minions.

It was a wise move; these little guys not only made a far better hook than Carell's hook-nosed Gru, but they also likely created a positive connection in people's minds with the tiny three-eyed green martians in Toy Story 3. Soon, kids recognized them on sight, and the tracking numbers quickly began to climb; by last Friday, Universal was all the way up to 91% general awareness, and 41% definite interest. And somewhere out there, a film exec is now ordering a new animated film that features a little green bug-eyed army: "I don't give a fuck what it's about, just make sure they're green!"

Predators also exceeded expectations with its take. Obviously, the franchise has a loyal following, but Fox also made sure to lure in the geeks by preceding all trailers with the words "Robert Rodriguez Presents." Back in 1994, the writer/director (who already has a loyal following of genre-movie lovers) had written an infamous script for a Predator sequel that was eventually leaked online, and over the last decade it has become a lust object for the series's fans.

By putting Rodriguez's name so prominently on the marketing materials (he is also a producer), Fox was likely hoping that acolytes of the infamous script would come running. However, if these fans looked closely at the title card that whizzed quickly by at the end of the ads, they would have seen that Rodriguez wasn't credited with the script, Alex Litvak and Michael Finch were. Rodriguez didn't even get a "Story By" nod, and Vulture has learned that that was a result of WGA arbitration; the Writers Guild decided that the script had been so extensively rewritten that Rodriguez didn't warrant any credit at all. Well, perhaps Rodriguez can take some solace in the fact that Cinemascore exit polling showed that audiences only gave Predators a C+. Don't blame him, he didn't write it!

Rush Limbaugh's Penthouse Sells For $11.5 Million

Just a low-key, homey living room.

Rush Limbaugh - who vowed to “get out of New York totally” when the state adopted a temporary income-tax surcharge last year - has found a buyer for his Fifth Avenue, 10-room penthouse. The condo - which looks out over Central Park at East 86th Street, and which the radio show host paid just under $5 million for in 1994 - sold for slightly under the $12.95 asking price, according to brokers, with one broker telling the Journal the final amount was about $11.5 million. It's hard to blame the buyer for shelling out that much dough; who could turn down such a tasteful and subdued bedroom mural?

Alvin Greene Wants Denzel Washington To Play Him In Movie

Though the Alvin Greene story has increasingly seemed like something taken out of a movie, it seems the unlikely political victor’s tale might make the reverse move and head to the silver screen in an adaptation. Greene told the Times Sunday that there has been a high level of interest in developing the project, and he even has an actor picked out to play him.

“Mr. Greene said that since his victory, he has received calls from all over the world, including from a publishing agent in New York and a screenwriter in California. If a movie is made, he said, he wants to be portrayed by Denzel Washington.”

Denzel, who is probably sitting at home right now making a pros/cons list to decide whether or not to take the part, should keep in mind that Greene already has a foolproof merchandising tie-in idea ready to go!

True Blood Werewolf Starstruck by Sookie Stackhouse

Joe Manganiello, the latest addition to the brooding cast of True Blood, was a fan of the show before he was cast on it. "The first table read was like being sucked into the television. I’d imagine it like being a kid who loves Michael Jordan and getting drafted into the NBA where you have to guard him," he tells the Post. "I remember filming the scene and literally thinking, 'Oh my god, that’s Sookie Stackhouse!'" (We would probably possess a similar inability to separate Anna Paquin from her endearing character.) Anyway, what will happen between Alcide and Sookie this season? "I think if you stick people in this situation — this big, strong, protective bodyguard with a girl, both heartbroken, sparks will happen. There’s a bit of lost puppy going on there." But don't expect all your questions to be answered any time soon: Manganiello reports that this season's cliff-hanger is "waaaay worse" than last season's, meaning even more cliff-hangery. Sucking us into season four already, so to speak. [PopWrap/NYP ]

‘Barefoot Bandit’ Arrested in the Bahamas

That's him.

Colton Harris-Moore, a perpetually shoeless 19-year-old man standing at six-foot-five, better known as the Barefoot Bandit, was arrested this morning in the Bahamas. During his life on the lam, Moore allegedly stole cars, boats, and airplanes in order to dodge U.S. law enforcement after escaping from a Washington state halfway house in 2008. Ferry boat captain Freddie Grant found him "in an inlet," apparently "watching television, just chilling." Later reports, however, say the aftermath was less chill, with Moore taken into custody only "after a high-speed boat chase" while carrying a gun, as if we'd expect anything less. His many Facebook fans are saddened by the news. [AP, CNN]

Bob Sheppard, ‘Voice of God,’ Dead at 99

The Yankees announcer had been with the team since 1951, ending his run in 2007 when he fell ill. His "impeccable introductions of stars from Joe DiMaggio to Derek Jeter" earned him the nickname "Voice of God." He died this morning with his wife by his side. George M. Steinbrenner III said in a statement: “I am deeply saddened by the death today of Bob Sheppard, a good friend and fine man whose voice set the gold standard for America’s sports announcers. For over a half century, fans were thrilled to hear his unforgettable voice and players were thrilled to hear his majestic enunciation of their names. Bob Sheppard was a great member of the Yankees family and his death leaves a lasting silence. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Mary, and their family.” [NYP]

BP Cuts Payments on 40,000 Claims

BP is no longer planning to fully pay 40,000 of the 99,508 people who have filed payment claims after being significantly impacted by the oil spill, because their claim files were "incomplete," improperly filled out, or they don't have state records that BP finds acceptable. "This will be devastating to individuals surviving financially month-to-month," said Kristy Nichols, the secretary of Louisiana's Department of Family Services. "This action is irresponsible and in complete contrast to BP's repeated promise that they will 'make things right.'" Nichols is currently requesting BP accept alternate forms of documentation and reconsider the decision to cut the amount they're paying these individuals. Meanwhile, sometime BP CEO Tony Hayward is getting the full-on celebrity treatment: TMZ found him watching the World Cup, sitting sort of near a hot chick who isn't his wife, and ordering shrimp fajitas in Texas. Anthony Weiner Tied the Knot

Early and often, eh?

Yesterday, Representative Anthony Weiner, the sharp-tongued Democrat overseeing New York's ninth congressional district, married Huma Abedin, Hillary Clinton's beautiful, right-hand woman. Bill Clinton officiated the ceremony at Long Island's Oheka Castle, and the bride wore an Oscar de la Renta gown. In politics, this is very sexy news. And Politico's got the pics! [Politico]

Will the World Cup Final Be the Most-Watched Event Ever?

Today's World Cup final, on ABC in the U.S., has the potential to be the most-watched event in the world, ever! Early research suggests this year's World Cup has been garnering record-breaking numbers, and today's game should follow suit. "We don't want to speculate in numbers but we're hoping this will be the biggest [event] ever," said Niclas Ericson, FIFA's director of television. The record for most-watched event ever is currently held by the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, which a global audience of one billion tuned in to. So everybody in the world will be screaming at the TV today in a beautiful chorus, in unison. [CNN]

Marvel Will Definitely Not Be Working With Ed Norton Again

Marvel Studios will not be casting Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, the Incredible Hulk, in the upcoming Avengers movie, even though Norton played Banner in the Hulk film and The Avengers is a superhero team-up that includes the character. Why? Not because they can't afford him, but basically because they don't like him! Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained:

"We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks."

Well, then! This could have something to do with the time that Edward Norton reportedly "slipped off to a desert island rather than do publicity for the movie he stars in and nominally wrote" after feuding with Marvel Studios over the editing in The Incredible Hulk. (After Norton had rewritten the Hulk script, he allegedly threatened not to do interviews for the film if he wasn't happy with its final cut, which he wasn't.) Now, along with whoever will play the character, the winner of this new industry face-off is yet to be seen; but it's giving The Avengers added publicity, the very thing Norton tried to steal from The Hulk, so point Marvel.

Marvel confirms they will hire new 'Hulk' for 'The Avengers' [HitFix]

With His First Workout DVD, The Situation Becomes a Brand

Every, uh, smart reality-TV star knows the best way to capitalize on their fame is to branch out and become a multimedia brand, forever embedded in the American marketplace via spinoffs, books, and, yes, workout videos. Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino told us he's planning to write a book (which might actually be good) and release a workout DVD, and the latter is actually happening. "He shot the video in New Jersey the other day with GT Media," the Post reports. The "intense total-body workout," obviously, includes a "bonus abs" section. Do people who watch Jersey Shore actually want to look like The Situation? Who knows, but he'd better hope this works out better for him than it did for equally hard-bodied but largely forgotten Real World cast member turned workout video star Eric Nies. [Page Six/NYP]
