U.S. Officials Knew About The Russian Spies For Ten Years

According to the Times, the F.B.I. has actually been monitoring Anna Chapman and her crew for a decade, and they gave the first detailed briefing to the White House last February. So why act now? "By late May and early June, counterespionage officials grew concerned that several of the agents were planning to leave the country this summer and concluded that they would have to arrest them," the Times reports. Obama was briefed about the case on June 11, sixteen days before the arrests, and from the beginning the idea of a swap seemed the likely outcome. Maria A. Veselova, a lawyer for one of the arrested-and-swapped spies, said it's all politics! (Well, yeah.) "It has to do with the relations between the two countries, and with political games going on at the top,” Veselova said, of the handling of the spies, and the ultimate swap. “It is always connected with these chess games.” Meanwhile, last we checked, Chapman was "completely unaware" of her media attention, but now that all the spies are out of U.S. custody, they might face their scariest assignment of all: Googling themselves. Despicable Me Already Making Millions

3D family flick Despicable Me was just released last night, but it's already on its way to a probable box office victory, raking in $21 million on Friday. The film is voiced by Steve Carell, who plays a likable villain planning a heist of the moon while also learning to be a father. Thus far, it's beating Twilight at the box office, but there's still more than twenty-four hours for you to decide if adorable cartoon creatures are more awesome than smoldering, lovesick vampires. Choose carefully! [THR]

Developers Bail on Gowanus Canal

The canal!

Toll Brothers, a development company, once imagined it would turn the banks of the Gowanus Canal into a sprawling, modern 500-unit apartment complex, where young professionals would stare out their glass windows and watch water taxis glide by like gondolas. Unfortunately, the canal itself is an odorous body filled with sewage, algae feeding on human waste, and substances described as "black mayonnaise." Still, Toll Brothers had vision - until now. Since the federal government designated the waterway a "Superfund site" in March, against the wishes of Mayor Bloomberg, a $500-million, ten-plus year Canal clean-up has begun, and that's just too long for Toll Brothers to wait to develop the site, so they've bailed on the project. “Fifteen years of having our money out the door and not having a return didn’t make financial sense," said David Von Spreckelsen, senior vice president for the development company. Toll Brothers left behind a $5.75-million down payment they'd already made on canal-front land south of the Carroll Street bridge.

Though the city and developers opposed the "Superfund" label, fearing it would stigmatize the canal, some people who live around there are okay with all this: "This is the right thing for the Gowanus corridor,” said area resident Linda Mariano. “The land might sit there for now, but we still have a future. We want healthy water and healthy land and open space. It shouldn’t just be for people who live in condos and co-ops.” One day, ten years down the road, the canal might even hold substances that just look like regular mayonnaise. [Brooklyn Paper]

Nut-Kicks and 'Coochie Carnage' Take Tosh to The Top of Comedy Central's Ratings

Tosh.0, the Comedy Central series on which Daniel Tosh screens and comments on some of the Internet's most ridiculous offerings, has been averaging 2.2 million viewers since it premiered June 2, surpassing The Daily Show and Colbert. On Wednesday, Tosh.0 garnered the network's highest ratings in its time slot since Chappelle's Show in 2004, solidifying its place as the third most-popular show on the network, behind just South Park and Futurama.

So if you aren't among his millions of viewers, you can see, in this clip, exactly how Tosh has achieved such an accolade: playing YouTube videos of little boys getting kicked in the nuts, check. Arizona Governor Sees 'Beheaded Bodies' On The Border

Arizona governor Jan Brewer is concerned about border violence, and she's talking about it in explicit terms. "Our law enforcement agencies have found bodies in the desert either buried or just lying out there that have been beheaded," she told a local TV station, referring to the much-disputed, allegedly-increasing violence that has contributed to the formation of the controversial Arizona immigration law. Eep! Except, the Arizona Guardian checked in with medical examiners in Arizona's border counties, and the coroners said they had actually never seen an immigration-related beheading. Then the Washington Post asked Brewer's press office for any documentation of decapitation, and the paper got no reply. Talk about just lying out there... [WaPo]

Wicked Taking Steps Towards The Big Screen

J.J. Abrams, musical director?

Wicked's musical producer Marc Platt, book writer Winnie Holzman, and songwriter Stephen Schwartz have reportedly started to meet with filmmakers to talk about turning the Tony-winning musical into a movie. Among the contenders? Lost's JJ Abrams, Glee's Ryan Murphy, and Nine's Rob Marshall. The film will be made at Universal, which produced the stage musical. While a Lost-like Wicked sounds awesome, the Glee cast's "Defying Gravity" performance might give Murphy a leg-up. [Deadline]

Biden: Keep the Sexy Spy, Trade Rush Limbaugh

The VP playing with water guns, once.</a

Last night, Jay Leno asked Joe Biden why the U.S. only got four of our spies back from Russian custody, when we were giving the Russians back ten of their spies, including Anna Chapman, at yesterday's spy swap. It seems like a raw deal, Leno noted, unless we got some sort of super-spies back by returning ten that even the Russians would admit were pretty mediocre at spying. That's exactly what happened, Biden confirmed: "We got back four really good ones. And the ten, they've been here a long time, but they hadn't done much." Still, they are hot nonetheless, Leno said, displaying a sultry photo of Anna Chapman as evidence. Biden joked, "Let me be clear. It was not my idea to send her back." He added: "I thought they'd take Rush Limbaugh." Classic, Joe. [AP]

William Morris Drops Mel Gibson

A spokesman for the William Morris Endeavor confirmed that the agency has dropped Mel Gibson as a client, after an audio tape of his racist and misogynistic rant surfaced. In the tape, which Gibson believes his former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva leaked, the actor tells Grigorieva,"You look like a fucking pig in heat ... if you get raped, it will be your fault," and uses racial slurs. The L.A. Sheriff's Dept. is also investigating Grigorieva's claims of domestic violence.

Ed Limato, Gibson's agent, died last Saturday, and co-chief executive of William Morris, Ari Emanuel, has never hid his feelings on Gibson, penning an open letter to Hollywood in 2006 urging the industry to blacklist the actor. (Limato joined the agency in 2007, bringing Gibson on as his client.) So what's the fate of The Beaver, the upcoming Jodie Foster-directed film in which Gibson plays a depressed divorce who forms a relationship with a beaver hand-puppet? Well, Gibson playing a lunatic apparently won't be much of a stretch, and it's certainly a role audiences can believe. But Summit Entertainment, distributing The Beaver, has yet to announce where or when the movie will be released, saying "no comment" when asked their plans for the film.

The Clintons Are Planning to Move to Bedford Hills

Bill and Hillary Clinton are planning to sell their Chappaqua home for a 7,000 square foot, $10.9 million estate in Bedford Hills, an idyllic town in Westchester, NY near where Martha Stewart and Richard Gere reside. The estate, named Clover Hills Farm, sits on 20 acres of land, and comes with a swimming pool and a wood paneled library with a fireplace. Sounds lovely! The current owner, Paul Wallace, founded the Manhattan real-estate firm Broadstone Group but declared bankruptcy in May. The Clintons could have the place "within weeks," according to the New York Post. Part of the appeal was the privacy: the home sits at the end of a quiet road, "away from prying eyes." But, hey everybody, there's the house, in the left hand corner! [NYP]
