Financial Journalists Find New And Inventive Way To Kick UBS While It’s Down

As you may have heard, there’s a World Cup outcome-predicting cephalopod mollusk that people are just obsessed with. So famous he is for being (completely randomly) right every damn time, that he’s actually started to receive death threats, which is how you know you’ve made it. As you may have also heard, there’s a bank called UBS that can’t do anything right. It is pretty much at this point a commonly accepted fact. So this just seems gratuitous and uncalled for.

Paul the Octopus on Friday predicted Spain to win the World Cup Final. That’s something the math modelers at investment banks just didn’t see coming. Paul is flawless in his picks to far, contrasting sharply with predictions made by banks ahead of the tournament. UBS, for example, gave Spain just a 4 percent chance of winning the trophy with their past performance model. The Netherlands, who meet Spain in the final Sunday, had just an 8 percent chance, the bank said.

Here’s Why Sean Michael Carey Wants You To Punch Jamie Dimon In The Balls

Yesterday a fellow named Sean Michael Carey started a Facebook group called “Punch Jamie Dimon (CEO of JPMorgan Chase) in the Balls,” the stated purpose being exactly that. He didn’t say why he wanted someone to inflict harm on JD’s (glorious, possibly cup-protected) sack, only that after doing so, you should add “Sean Michael Carey sends his regards, fucker.” Today Daily Intel found out the source of SMCs beef toward James: after bouncing a few checks, Chase froze his account and said they were investigated him for check fraud. And then:

“I get a letter that says if it comes back that I haven’t committed fraud, they would mail me a check in ten to fifteen days.” Carey was pissed: JPMorgan had hijacked all of his cash, and he had no recourse. “I’ve spent, in the last week, about nine hours on hold with customer service,” he said. “It’s so not like that when you’re an employee [which he was, back in the day]. You get right through.” Frustrated, he turned to Facebook: “I wanted to punch someone. Not one of the customer-service people, it was like, I wanted Chase Manhattan personified. When I got home, I thought: The CEO, that’s who I want to punch,’” he said.

Hedge Fund Manager Steven Bell Unwittingly Gives Ray Dalio A Few Ideas For Updated Version Of “Principles” While Decrying “Megalomaniac’s” Methods

Silly little Brit.

“What kind of firm issues an edict to ban gossip? It’s kind of like saying (1) ‘Don’t spend more than 45 seconds in the lavatory.’ Is the guy (2) going to monitor people by the water cooler? Do you (3) have to have a member of compliance with you if you go out for a drink? They’ll drink Perrier or something? If a firm’s got a problem with gossip, it’s a problem with the firm. I think a little bit of gossip lights the air. It just seems to me something symptomatic of something seriously wrong with the firm. Honestly, how many firms have failed because of an outbreak of office gossip? I think someone’s got a bit of a megalomaniac trait if they’re trying to ban gossip.” [BBC]

Tyler Cowen: LeBron Should Have Gone To NYC (For Maximum Utility)

We talked to Tyler Cowen this week about LeBron James and the the idea of utility — the word economists use to describe how much enjoyment or benefit people experience.

We wanted to know where LeBron should have gone to maximize utility for fans. Cowen is an economist and blogger, and he recently posted on who a utilitarian should root for in the World Cup.

Our interview with Cowen is part of today's podcast, which we'll post later this afternoon. In the meantime, here are a few of Cowen's comments:

LeBron, for added utility, should have gone to the New York Knicks. Because that's a big city with a terrible team, and they would have enjoyed him quite a bit. Number two choice would be Chicago. It's a big city. It's not a terrible team, it's a good team. He would have made it much better, maybe won a championship.

But to send him to Miami is almost the place that brings the least additional utility to the United States, as far as I can see. ...

They were already enjoying Dwayne Wade. Now they have three stars, and they’re not going to get three times the pleasure.

...who were the two players who handled the ball most lsat year? Numbers one and two were LeBron James and Dwayne Wade. So you don’t play the game with two balls. ... You would actually have more total social happiness if they played in two cities.

Confidential To All CEOs, Hedge Fund Managers, Et Al: DON’T LISTEN TO CNBC

Someone I think will back me up on this one.

CNBC is currently at this moment trying to make the case that the open letter sent by Dan Gilbert to Cavs fans last night was ill-advised. “We’re all for CEO’s speaking their mind but you need to do so in a well-thought out, controlled manner,” said one guest. “This was probably something you wake up and wish you’d hit ’save as draft on’,” commented Melissa Francis. “Don’t do it!” was their general thesis. DON’T LISTEN TO CNBC IS MINE.

Letters like the one from Dan Gilbert are what we need more of in this business. More late-night, likely booze and emotion fueled rants. Interesting use of quotation marks (his “decision,” unlike anything ever “witnessed”). Tantrums in which you go absolutely off the rails. Spectacularly bold claims about all you’re going to achieve “without that breast-growing, panty-wearing tradeaitor.” Prose that suggests you’re going to key a former employee’s car, stalk him and his new boss and, and reassurances to the rest of the staff/investors that “WE DON’T NEED HIM!!!” Have you been wronged? CNBC wants you to keep all this in the lock box. I want you to LET IT OUT. Be the psycho bitch. You won’t regret it, particularly if you consider letting it out on YouTube. I’ll offer a few more examples of what we’re looking for later.

Hedge Fund Manager Achieves “Personal Breakthrough” While Reading Twilight, Shares The Moment With Staff

Take it away, Tom Barrack:

Gang,

The last few weeks have been an incredible adventure. Thanks to you, Colony is on fire across the globe and we are conquering new frontiers and new themes on a daily basis in almost every venue in which we conduct our business. You are the A Team and I am deeply grateful and proud of what all of you have “teamed” to our reality.

I am going to share with you a personal breakthrough, which does not relate directly to our business but does reflect upon how we all look at all the “stuff” that drives us on a daily basis. Many of you will think that I have lost my mind or have finally experienced a mystical intervention of “my feminine side”. I promise you, it is neither.

I have had an agonizingly tough couple of weeks and have survived on pure adrenaline in the midst of tumult, controversy, tough negotiations with business counterparts, and a grueling travel itinerary that was challenging even for me. One of the recent meetings was in Turkey with our Mars partners. I made arrangements to have a bit of yacht time with them. When the meeting got cancelled I did the unthinkable for me, have a little down time all to myself. I boarded the gorgeous but stark Turkish Gulet right as the sun was setting. As I made my way into the main cabin I saw something so frightening it left me speechless. There, staring up at me from the ebony coffee table was a book. On the cover was a gorgeous red apple nestled between two soft and caring hands. Between the hands were written the words that strike terror in the hearts of every macho, red-blooded male…TWILIGHT. AAAARRRGGGGHHHH!! Alone, on a boat, with no wifi, no satellite, no magazines, no newspapers, just me and this book. This piece of chick lit, teeny bopper heartthrob stuff. Terror on the high seas! I wanted nothing to do with any of it. Not relevant, not interesting.

As I sat there with nothing to do the book kept taunting me. I began to think that there must be something I don’t understand. What could it be? What is it all about? Women don’t just read these books, they live them. They become each paragraph. I picked it up, but then immediately dropped it like a hot coal. What if someone saw me reading this? My macho reputation would be finished! I would be kicked out of the bench press section of the gym. My polo compadres would send me packing to the pony rides and my surfing buddies would exile me to the kiddie pool.

But it was a long night and there was absolutely nothing, and I mean NOTHING else to do. Long story short – not only did I read Twilight, I read the other two as well!! I was fascinated, captivated even. However, what intrigued me was not the same thing that hooked the millions of women whose lives and had been changed by this series, but something else entirely.

For you male Colonists, here is a brief synopsis. Stubborn teenage girl meets a handsome but moody vampire and against all odds they fall in love.

Here is my macho take – Stephanie Meyer is a total genius. As I flipped through the pages I was startled by the lack of detailed description of Bella and the surgical and illuminating development of Edward. As hard as I tried I could not really picture Bella, but I was grabbed by Edward’s character – gorgeous, super human, super strong, super fast and most importantly encompassing the wisdom of a 109-year-old man in the guise of a 17-year-old boy.

The description of Bella on the other hand, was not moving, or compelling. What I realized is the genius of Stephanie was that she knew that by keeping the character generic, any and every woman could climb inside and picture herself in Bella’s shoes. Thus the fascination and deep emotional reactions to what many (including myself) thought was a foolish teenage trashy novel.

I definitely got that the “anticipation” was much more romantic and sexy than the “consummation” to the woman. Slow, patient, caring, tender…. (guys have you heard those words before?) I found him incredibly appealing as he was taking care of Bella, putting her first, distancing himself from her to protect her and yet never being able to get her out of his mind. The relationship stood the test of time through many years, other men, family challenges and misconceptions of valiant and loving acts. A human relationship with a vampire is challenging on many levels, the least of which being you get older as your partner remain timeless. It was enticing, captivating, alluring…and dangerous. Through it all she believed that she could do it…. change her life… change his life…make it different…in spite of what conventional wisdom dictated.

Every woman longs for the anticipation, the romance, the journey, the taboo, the patience, and the attentiveness. Men, however, are all about the destination, the result, the speed and the outcome. The journey is merely penance to get to the destination. Which is why despite the vampires and werewolves, this book is kryptonite to most men.

In a world of technology these books are unique. There is so little imagination left in most of forms of entertainment today. See it, Google it, play it, do it…there is very little old fashioned make believe anymore. I could go on and on, but I know by now many of you are saying, “what happened to our leader?”… “Maybe Lebanese really is a sexual preference rather than a nationality”. I promise none of the above.

Here is my point. The idea of devoting half a day to reading these books was something that never, NEVER, entered my mind as something I would ever, EVER do. I hated them. I mocked them. It made no difference to me that over 20 million books were sold, movies made, and Team Edward and Team Jacob pandemonium had engulfed the world. I was simply stuck in my point of view.

Once I ventured into the books I learned something. I now understand why some women are emotionally altered from merely reading a book. I have also gained a deeper realization that understanding the circumstances and points of views of those with whom we are negotiating, working, living, loving or fighting is the key determinant factor in an enduring relationship.

In every day business, we think we know it all. We are the captains of our industry and we possess all the global knowledge. That which we don’t understand we push a button and it appears before us. We are lacking creativity…. it is hard for us to dream… harder for us to change our lives… hard to live in a situation that other people view as unconventional. And for sure, we all have no idea on how to be satisfied with the status quo.

It is time for all of us to become more creative, spend more time outside of the strict arithmetic cadence of our business, and understand foreign points of view. Most importantly we must really find the “moment”. Anticipation is everything. The process of getting to a destination is the objective and the more illumination, color, and vitality we give to the “road” the less important the final destination becomes. It will be what it will be!!!

On this 4th of July, slow down, take a breath, rediscover your imagination and create some excitement in your life. Take a few days to expand on the qualities of the character you would really like to become. Then live it, do it, become it! The better you are as an individual, the better we will be as a team.

I feel renewed and refreshed, having gotten out of my comfort zone and experiencing something so totally out of my normal realm. I don’t get it…. but I feel it. Taking the agenda-less time to absorb a point of view that I had ignored while loved ones around me relished in it, was an oasis for my soul. Having been unwilling to investigate the cause of such a startling movement until now was ignorant. Move your cheese!!!! Break through the comfort barriers, you can handle it whatever it is. The earth is turning on its axis. Planets and moons and suns are in orbit. Gravity is pulling and tugging, and molecules and quarks are warring inside of us. We need movement to live…

Do it Now!

Tom

Report: James Cameron Will Make $350 Million From Avatar

by Ashley Lau

James Cameron is likely to set a record for the most money ever made by a director for a single film, Hollywood uberblogger Nikke Finke reports today.

Avatar, which Cameron also wrote and produced, is a cash monster. It has grossed more than $2.7 billion at the box office. Sales of DVDs and Blu-Ray discs were over $130 million in their first four days on the market.

Cameron's take will be somewhere around $350 million, Finke says.

As we reported earlier this year, Hollywood economics are notoriously difficult to figure out.

Studios set up the accounting so that most movies don't show a profit, even if they do well at the box office.

Big stars sometimes get around this by getting some percentage of a movie's gross — the total amount of money it brings in, regardless of costs.

In this case, Finke says, Cameron may have cut a sort of hybrid deal based on gross "at cash break." As one entertainment-industry lawyer explained in this Forbes Q&A, that type of deal takes into account a movie's production costs, but not other costs, such as distribution.

Avatar cost $237 million to produce, and another $150 million to promote, according to The Wrap.

U.S.: China's Currency Is Undervalued (But Not Manipulated)

by Jacob Goldstein

In a bit of diplomatic doubletalk, the Treasury Department said that China's currency is undervalued — but also said China isn't manipulating its currency.

The comments, from a semi-annual report issued yesterday, are neither entirely logical nor entirely surprising.

China's currency was pegged to the dollar from 2008 until June of this year. If it had been allowed to fluctuate, it would have appreciated significantly. That would have made U.S. goods cheaper in China, and Chinese goods more expensive in the U.S.

Since last month, when China said it would allow the yuan's value to fluctuate, the currency has appreciated against the dollar — but only a little (less than 1 percent).

The Treasury report calls China's decision to let the yuan fluctuate a "significant development." But it's not enough, the report says.

Treasury cites a number of factors — including the fact that China continues to show productivity gains and pile up foreign reserves — that suggest the yuan is still too cheap against the dollar. It will "take time before we can assess whether China's recent exchange rate change will produce a sufficiently market-determined exchange rate to correct the undervaluation," the report says.

When the yuan floated between 2005 and 2008, it appreciated against the dollar by about 20 percent, according to the WSJ.

Morgan Stanley Employee Charged With Taking It A Li’l Too Far With Divorce Court Judge

Okay, so, just an FYI: if you happen to find yourself going through a divorce (which you filed for without telling your wife for a couple months, NBD) and the judge rules against you and you’re like “Well, I’m not at all happy with this turn of events at all and here’s what I’m going to do about it,” don’t let the thing(s) you do about it include:

* Hacking into the judge’s email and changing his password

* Sending messages from his account to his contacts such as “I can S my own D and have. True story.”

* Calling him and his family members and breathing heavily into the phone

* Logging onto chat rooms and leaving comments like the following under your real name:

Spencer Kagan MUST be removed. He is an animal who abuses his authority. He is a Communist sympathizer who travels to Cuba. Why would a state judge spend spare time in Cuba? He has no relatives there. He is a Communist and a supporter of the Castro dictator… that is why.

He steals money. He does not follow the rules of the court. He never had a real job in his life. Why? Because he is just plain dumb. He worked for his daddy all his life and never made any success of himself. His daddy used his political connections to have him appointed to the bench by Governor Cellucci. Even though the Governor nominated him…he never met him and never even heard of him. He did it as a favor to Spencer’s Dad’s friend. LOL

He lied on his judicial application.

He orders litigants to pay his cronies enormous sums of money or face jail.

He loves to throw innocent men and women in jail. He even went as far to successfully throw a 53 year old woman in jail because she had the courage to tell his wife about an affair he was having.

He makes up his mind about a case within 30 seconds of meeting the litigants before hearing any evidence or facts. How is this known? Kagan has himself said it in open court.

He loves to woo the young female interns and rendezvous with them to brag about his “wise” decisions. He drinks like a fish and loves to flirt with these young women.

Let’s see if spencer dares send his state troopers to my house as a retaliation for these truthful comments. I dare you spencer..go for it you perverted creep.

…as there is a good chance you may find yourselves being arraigned “on two counts of stalking, three counts of making threats, four counts of making annoying phone calls and one count of unauthorized access of a computer” a la Morgan Stanley financial adviser Jay Korff. But you’re cool with that, please, by all means, proceed.

This Week’s Weird Jobs

Image: Consumerist/Flickr

Some jobs are very, well, nich-y.
From Twilight debater to marijuana baker, this week’s jobs would be perfect for the few people who actually fit their hairline niches:

1. CA: Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Are you a die-hard Twilight fanatic or a “Twi-hard”? Do you know more than the average fan about all the stories and characters and devote your time on forums and fan sites to learn more about Twilight?

We are looking for two debaters who will participate in an exciting live video debate on our website. One will be on Team Edward and the other will be on Team Jacob and you will convince all our viewers who Bella should ultimately choose and why.

This is your opportunity to take part in a “citizen” debate about all things Twilight and to show your passion and share your knowledge.

You must have a webcam, microphone and a fast internet connection. You should also be available during the day on a weekday. We will be giving heavy consideration to applicants who have YouTube, etc profiles with video blogs, et al that we can review.

Compensation: The live video debate will be a total of 20 minutes and you will be paid $20.

Forget the Supreme Court Justice hearings for Kagan, the BP saga, Russian spies, and other nonsuch. We got more important fish to fry.

2. CA: Avant-garde Crepe Consultant Needed

Currently we are looking for a very experienced avant-garde crepe chef/consultant to develop sweet crepe recipes for a sophisticated palette.

We are only interested in carrying out this role for a short amount of time (not full time position) in our San Francisco location, before testing it out in the real world at our cafe.

YOU MUST BE:
- Min. 3 years crepe pastry experience
- Familiar with global cuisine and flavors
- Innovative
- Creative

Please send your resume to the email above with a short cover letter.

Garçon
! Avant-garde crepes for my bourgeois bohemian palette, s’il vous plait. None of this streetside Nutella crap.

Please send us your full name, complete contact information, some background information about yourself and a short list of your favorite nightspots. Please include a recent picture if possible.
