Kobayashi, a six-time victor, was benched this year due to an alleged contract dispute with Major League Eating, but he attempted to jump the stage after the event, according to CNN, and he ended up causing a scene. Apparently in the world of competitive eating, publicists tell it like it is: "Kobayashi was trying to prove he was better than other competitors," said Yuki James, one of Kobayashi's own handlers. Kobayashi faces charges of resisting arrest, interfering with a police officer, and disorderly conduct. He's being held at a Brooklyn jail, like this week's other attention-stealer, Anna Chapman. Happy Independence Day, everybody. [CNN] Update: Deadspin has a video of Kobayashi's arrest.

According to Deadline: "I'm told Garfield's pay scale on the film is around $500,000 salary on the first film, $1 million for the second one, and $2 million for the third film. All of the finalists were presented with those terms in a deal for one film and two options." Not too shabby for the critically well-received actor, whose biggest roles so far have been in Boy A and the upcoming Social Network. Source: Entertainment - Google News | 4 Jul 2010 | 1:57 pm Kal Penn Doesn't Think Joel Stein Is Funny![]() In Joel Stein's Time column last week, "My Own Private India," the writer explained, of a trip to his hometown of Edison, New Jersey: "For a while, we assumed all Indians were geniuses. Then ... In the 1990s, the not-as-brilliant merchants brought their even-less-bright cousins, and we started to understand why India is so damn poor." Stein writes that his now largely Indian hometown is "unfamiliar" to him, and concludes, "There is an entire generation of white children in Edison who have nowhere to learn crime." After receiving criticism for the piece, Stein wrote that he "truly feels stomach-sick that [he] hurt so many people." Now actor (and Associate Director at the Office of Public Engagement) Kal Penn has reacted to the piece on The Huffington Post, critiquing it for being both xenophobic and also just not clever: "Gags about impossibly spicy food? I'd never heard those before! Multiple Gods with multiple arms? Multiple laughs! Recounting racial slurs like "dot-head"? Oh, Mr. Stein, is too good! I don't know how he comes up with such unique bits ... Growing up a few miles from Edison, I always thought it was hilarious when I'd get the crap kicked out of me by kids like Stein who would yell "go back to India, dothead!" He really captured the brilliant humor in that one!"
Ouch. The Village Voice also points out that The Huffington Post is actually the same website that published Andrea Miller's (non-satirical) "How to Date an Indian" last month, prompting Neel Shah to react with the (satirical) "How to Date a White Bitch." On New Zealand’s Good Morning show, the actor said that an announcement related to The Hobbit is imminent: "It'll either be, we're going ahead or we're not," McKellen said. The actor is supposed to play Gandalf The Grey if the two-part Lord Of The Rings prequel actually happens, but he's not even sure he'll be part of the production at all anymore: "Well, I’m not under contract and my time is running out and I’m enjoying working in the theater and frankly, I would like to race after doing Waiting For Godot, get on with doing another play, but we’ll have to see. This is not something the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in," even though the war began with widespread approval under President Bush. Now his own party isn't having it. On The Week this morning, Arizona Senator John McCain called Steele's statements "wildly inaccurate," saying "there is no excuse for them," and "Mr. Steele is going to have to assess as to whether he can still lead the Republican Party." Over on Face The Nation, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham (who, by the way, 'aint gay) called the war in Afghanistan "America's war," and called Steele's comments "uninformed, unnecessary, unwise." Finally, on Fox News Sunday, Republican Senator Jim DeMint said Steele "needs to apologize to our military." Texan Senator Ron Paul, on the other hand, is one Republican who not only didn't distance himself from Steele's remarks, but vehemently stuck up for Steele: "I would like to congratulate Michael Steele for his leadership on one of the most important issues of today," he said in a statement. It is the eighth grand slam victory for the tennis player, who won Wimbledon in 2008 but sat out last year due to injury. "To have my hands on this trophy again is more than a dream for me," Nadal told BBC Sport. By the Times's account, "Nadal slung groundstrokes, grunted and twisted his face into all the usual contortions. He looked normal, only he was different, more vicious, more aggressive, perhaps an improved version of the player who won this tournament in 2008." Joe Giudice, the hubby of Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice, may have forged someone's signature to (falsely) prove he paid back a loan, before filing for (a possibly falsified) bankruptcy! Here we go: in 2007, Joe Giudice's business partner, Joe Mastropole, gave him a loan secured by three properties, which Giudice failed to pay back in full. Then Joe G. forged his business partner's name on a bank document that said the mortgage on the properties was paid, Mastropole charges in a lawsuit, in order to take out another loan and pocket $1 million, court papers charge. After Joe M. won a judgment in his case last October, the Giudices's filed for bankruptcy just days later! According to the Post, "The Giudices' bankruptcy lawyer, James Kridel, admitted that Giudice [forged] the document, but said he did so with Mastropole's permission. Mastropole called that 'a lie.'" The Post says that whatever Joe Giudice did with the 2007 windfall that he's yet to fully pay back "is anyone's guess." So here's a few, all captured on film: bought his family a mansion in Franklin Lakes, turned it into a gaudy makeshift nightclub for a housewarming party, and then, well, maybe he spent some on few nice nights out at The Brownstone. Given all of that heavy spending, some are now questioning whether or not the Giudices are really broke, or if they hid "numerous assets" in order to file for bankruptcy. According to the Post, "The IRS is currently investigating Joe Giudice's business interests, which included a stone and stucco company." At times on her show, Teresa seems sweet, even if she totally did instigate next week's fight with her co-star Danielle. But Teresa G. knew her husband filed for bankruptcy, so she's been privy to at least some of his financial dealings, and even though they're proud Italians, more and more these two are beginning to resemble Boris and Natasha. News: Entertainment News | 4 Jul 2010 | 8:19 am Thousands of Russian Spies Could Still Be Among Us![]() Worm-on-a-hook. The New York Post caught up with former CIA operatives, who told the paper that the ten accused Russian spies taken into custody last week were probably not acting alone: "I would say there are a few thousand here," said Boris Korczak, a former double agent who worked for the CIA, spying on the KGB from 1973-1980. "There are more Russian spies here now than during the Cold War. [But] out of 1,000 spies, one or two will perform, will get access to our nuclear secrets." Korczak also shed some light on the enigmatic Anna Chapman (pictured), who, the Post reports, is being held in solitary confinement in a federal prison in Brooklyn, completely unaware of her media coverage: "Korczak believes that Chapman (real name: Anya Kuschenko) was likely schooled by the SVR - Russia's post-KGB intelligence agency - in the art of seduction," the Post reports. If that's not cinematic enough, some of this training took place in secret Russian cities that were exact replicas of American suburbs: "During the Cold War, 'the Soviet Union had a number of schools that trained beautiful women in how to lure and satisfy powerful, rich, American men, sexually and intellectually,' [Korczak] said. 'They're called 'worm-on-a-hook' agents.' Some of these schools are located in small towns in the southern part of the country [that don't] appear on a map. They are exact replicas of American suburbs such as Chevy Chase, Md. ... Russian spies-in-training in these towns 'buy groceries at 7-Elevens, eat hamburgers at McDonald's, and watch American TV'"
Though it sounds like they might just get hooked on Slurpees and Glee and forget about the whole mission, Korczak said the Russian spies "are primarily after our technology," and "for America to break up into three different countries, to stop existing as a superpower.'"
