Friday Night Lights Recap: Talkin’ ‘Bout the Car Wash

Deep breaths, FNL fans. The day you’ve been dreading has arrived. What’s that, you say — is Landry on another killing spree? Has Santiago been named QB1? Has Ferret Guy returned?! No, none of these ridiculous things has happened. But we’m sure many of you were experiencing Ferret Guy levels of freak-out when you read this report revealing that, inevitably, Taylor Kitsch’s burgeoning movie career will keep him away for most — if not all — of season five. Horrible news? Sure. But maybe good timing, because this week’s strong episode proves you don’t need Taylor’s abs acting to make Friday Night Lights sing.

Read the rest of the recap, originally published when DirecTV aired the episode in January, here.

Pattinson, Stewart, and Lautner Guaranteed at Least $25 Million Apiece for the Last Two Twilights

With Twilight: Eclipse closing in on what box office watchers say will surely be a $200+ million weekend, why have the faces of Summit Entertainment's executives taken on such a deathly pallor? It might be because Vulture hears that they've just agreed to write some very big checks, indeed: Insiders tell us that Summit will pay stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner each a whopping $25 million against 7.5 percent of the theatrical gross for starring in the next and last two Twilight movies, Breaking Dawn, Parts One and Two.

How much money will they end up taking home? The previous Twilight film, New Moon, took in almost $710 million worldwide, and Eclipse is on pace to exceed that. But let’s conservatively assume that both Breaking Dawns do as well as New Moon: After factoring in exhibitor splits, a lesser studio share for international releases, and other typical debited fees that would give you a migraine if they were explained here, each star would take in another $16 million total, giving them all final paydays of $41 million.

Meanwhile, Vulture has learned that Universal, upon hearing that this mammoth payday was being finalized, quickly sealed its deal with Lautner to star in Stretch Armstrong, for which they'll pay him $7.5 million, a sum that now seems like a yard sale. CORRECTION: Universal's $7.5 million deal with Lautner for Stretch Armstrong was closed before execs learned of Lautner's new Breaking Dawn payday. But now they know of it, they are likely breathing huge sighs of relief.

Zap2It's anonymous sources say that franchise creator Kevin Williamson (who recently sushi-ed with the writer of the article, by the way) is no longer involved with Scream 4 and that the script is now in the hands of Ehren Kruger, who was responsible for the kinda bad Scream 3. Hayden Panettiere's role has allegedly been "dumbed down significantly," and when Alison Brie, Marley Shelton, Erik Knudson, and Adam Brody signed on to star recently it was to make up for the other actors who fled the production. Syfy Swaps Out Twilight Zone for The Greatest American Hero, and the Geeks Revolt

Is it now the official policy of Syfy to piss off hard-core fans of what was once the SciFi Channel? First the network changed its name in an attempt to widen its reach beyond its core demographic of basement-dwelling video-game fanatics between the ages of 25 to 54. Then it followed up the groundbreaking genius of its Battlestar Galactica reboot with endless Saturday night B-movies (Sharktopus!), the acquisition of WWE Smackdown!, and cheesy reality shows like Ghost Hunters. And now? For the first time in about fifteen years, the network has decided not to run a 4th of July marathon of The Twilight Zone, replacing one of the greatest TV series of all time with twenty hours of The Greatest American Hero. Is this any way to serve man, Syfy?

The network announced the switch nearly a month ago, but as the big day has grown closer, Rod Serling's army has mobilized, launching the obligatory Facebook protest group and posting heated comments on Syfy forums ("What do you expect from a company that can't even spell 'SciFi' right?" sniffed NYPDRetired; another predicted a Manimal marathon was next). Some have taken to Twitter to vent; even actor Kevin Pollak (whose sci-fi credentials are in order, having starred in Willow) has registered his disgust by retweeting three anti-Syfy posts.

When Vulture contacted a Syfy spokesman to ask why the network insisted on spitting in the face of tradition, he said the channel wasn't abandoning Twilight Zone; Serling’s tales would be seen as per usual on the New Year’s marathon. But for the Fourth, Syfy simply wanted to "freshen things up a little this year by presenting Hero, since it hasn't been seen (nationally) in nearly twenty years."

But as disappointed as many diehards will be by the loss of classic creepiness this holiday weekend, there are some William Katt fans who can’t believe their good fortune — including, one would assume, the Family Guy writers. (And if you squint, doesn’t Katt’s 'fro look like a firework explosion? It’s holiday-appropriate!) Sure, we’ll admit that GAH boasts a pretty awesome, timeless, and frequently parodied theme song. But so does Twilight Zone, though that has the advantage of being a true TV classic, rather than just a campy childhood memory.

Fall Campaigns Shift to Black and White

Most of the major fall campaigns have debuted by now. What you may or may not have noticed is the lack of color in them. Seven major fashion houses opted for the B&W look, including Valentino, Prada Men, Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein, Versace, and Bottega Veneta. This is after an especially colorful spring campaign season. For a fashion house like Versace, it's strange to see the brand mute out its high-contrast minis and sexy to-the-floor gowns. And Valentino, who had such a lush, romantic spring campaign with Dree Hemingway, hired David Sims's clean, stark minimalist style for its fall prints. Is this just a coincidence? Or could this be a throwback to classic fifties imagery? Click ahead to see all the colorless campaigns in our slideshow.

A Quarter of Americans Have No Idea What We’re Celebrating This Weekend

Even though our national holidays are mostly used as excuses to eat copiously, do something fun outside, and leave work early, is it too much to ask for Americans to at least be aware of even the most basic historical facts about the day they're celebrating, and, by extension, the country they live in? As July 4 approaches this Sunday, a Marist poll shows that 26 percent of Americans, including 40 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds, don't know what country the United States won independence from. Incorrect answers included France, China, Japan, Mexico, and Spain. China and Japan, really? Who said that? Identify yourselves. Sigh.

Anyway, we're leaving work early today to go eat copiously and do something fun outside. Have a great Independence Day.

Mild-mannered folk singer Conor Oberst, who joined the Zach de la Rocha–organized boycott of Arizona back in May, has written an open letter in response to Charlie Levy, an independent concert promoter trying to convince musicians not to boycott Arizona through an open letter of his own. It's worth a full read, but here's a snippet: "The only thing, clearly, that these people care about is Money and Power, that and the creation and preservation of an Anglo-Centric Police State where every Immigrant and Non-White citizen is considered subhuman. They want them stripped of their basic human rights and reduced to slaves for Corporate America and the White Race. They are engaged in blatant class warfare. It is evil, pure and simple." This reveals two things: (1) Conor Oberst is angry! (2) Conor Oberst is one of those people who sometimes capitalizes words for no reason. [Billboard]

Simon Cowell: I Helped Broker Piers Morgan CNN Deal

Simon Cowell told Extra yesterday that not only is the deal to replace Larry King with Piers Morgan on CNN real, but Cowell helped broker it! "[Morgan] was under contract to us on America's Got Talent, so he called me and we helped sort of broker the deal," Cowell told his ex-girlfriend Terri Seymour, a host for the entertainment show. "I knew about this weeks ago." Problematically, CNN's flacks told TVNewser today that "We have not offered Piers Morgan a job, and we are not currently in negotiations with him. We are always open to new opportunities and to various talent who express an interest in our programming. Piers is one such talent, but there is no deal." Of course, "Page Six" recently busted the CNN spokespeople for repeatedly lying to the gossip column ("Page Six" famously keeps a list of publicists in their "Liar's Corner" and will refer to them as "lying flacks" going forward). But even the president of CNN, Jon Klein, told the Los Angeles Times Wednesday that the network is "not in negotiations" with Morgan. So who is lying? The flacks and president of a multinational news company? Or Paula Abdul's friend who is the only person left in the world still rocking a hairstyle that even Kid 'n' Play left behind when the nineties ended?

Bill Clinton Employs West Virginia Stereotypes in Robert Byrd Memorial Speech

Political dignitaries gathered in Charleston, West Virginia, today to honor the life of the Senate's longest-serving member in its history, Robert Byrd. Taking his turn at the microphone before President Obama and Joe Biden, Bill Clinton praised Byrd's devotion to his state, which he famously showered with as much pork-barrel spending as possible, and to the Constitution. When Clinton got the line-item veto, it was the perfect storm — not only was it constitutionally questionable (and eventually declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court), but it would allow the president to strike individual earmarks from pieces of legislation. "He hated the line-item veto with the passion that most people in West Virginia reserve for blood feuds like the Hatfields and the McCoys," Clinton said to laughter, and, we think, a few groans.

The Headgear Options Are Infinite at Victor Osborne

If there's one trend you can really get behind this summer, it's this: Snooki tans are out and sun-shielding hats are in. Thanks to milliner Victor Osborne's newest shop, officially opening in Williamsburg this weekend, looking PC-cool is easier than ever. And like its large, older Lower East Side sibling, the atelier deals exclusively in Osborne’s nostalgic, handmade hats.

Drawing inspiration from Marlene Dietrich movies, architecture, and a birds’-nest-wearing great-aunt, Osborne makes all of the inventory himself. The hat forms enhancing the store’s minimalist-Victorian décor are a nod to his DIY ethos, and while the 30 hats from his spring/summer collection are available in-store (fedoras, porkpies, cloches, etc.), a large portion of the inventory is custom-made. Click ahead to see a slideshow of some of our favorite pieces from the new space.

Victor Osborne, 358 Grand St., nr. Marcy Ave., Williamsburg (718-388-8480); Friday-Sunday, noon-8.

OPEN THREAD: Funniest Movies To Just Add An “S”?

The Robert Rodriguez Predator reboot “Predators” hits theaters this weekend, so in the spirit of brilliantly-named pluralized titles, we ask the question:

What’s the funniest movie to just add an “S” for the sequel?

Some suggestions:

Avatars

Bambis

Kramers vs. Kramers

Iron Men

My Giants

Good Will Huntings

The Pursuits Of Happyness

Schindler’s Lists

Jawses

Y Tu Mamas Tambien

The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill And Came Down Mountains

Even More Gremlins

There’s literally millions of these. Leave your favorite crappy pluralized sequel names in the comments.

Zelda Kaplan’s Bedtime Is Between Midnight and 7 a.m.

Name: Zelda Kaplan
Age: 94
Neighborhood: Columbus Circle
Occupation: "Citizen of the World." I spent half my life relaxing and the other half crusading — I was a successful ballroom dancer and women's golf pro in Miami Beach in my 20s, a doctor's wife in New York in my 30s — and in my 60s and 70s I spent my time largely in Africa and Southeast Asia campaigning directly with local tribal government leaders for women's and children's rights. [Ed: She's also a highly recognizable New York City nightlife fixture.]

Who's your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional?
Margaret Mead.

What's the best meal you've eaten in New York?
The pan-seared branzino at Orsay.

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
I read books and newspapers. Many people turn a certain age and "check out," but that is not me. In my 90s, I am not able to travel as much, so I must read everything I can at home to remain aware of global change, which provides me great knowledge to empower people through daily conversations, and through my charitable efforts.

What was your first job in New York?
Selling advertising over the phone.

What's the last thing you saw on Broadway?
I don't go to Broadway these days, but I used to love anything Helen Hayes was in, and the husband-and-wife team of Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne was wonderful.

Do you give money to panhandlers?
Almost never. Sometimes you look in their face and you know it might not go to the right place, but you have to give.

What's your drink?
Shiraz.

How often do you prepare your own meals?
Almost never.

What's your favorite medication?
I don't use medication, but Mia Morgan bought me a bottle of vitamins last year — I just realized I forgot to take them!

What's hanging above your sofa?
African carvings that I collected in situ from New Guinea, West Africa, and South Africa. Some of my joys of traveling off the beaten path.

How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
Anything over $30.

When's bedtime?
Anytime between midnight and 7 a.m.

Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
I haven't seen the new Times Square.

What do you think of Donald Trump?
I've never met Donald Trump, but I would like to. When I heard he had a low handicap, I thought maybe we could play a round of golf.

What do you hate most about living in New York?
The soot.

Who is your mortal enemy?
Death.

When's the last time you drove a car?
I gave up driving when I arrived in New York City in 1950.

How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
To my knowledge, it has not affected me. No one I know talks
about money with me.

Times, Post, or Daily News?
The New York Times.

Where do you go to be alone?
My apartment.

What makes someone a New Yorker?
Someone who really enjoys the energy of this city — and someone who looks forward to coming home!

Michael Steele Taking Foreign-Policy Cues From The Princess Bride

In remarks at a fund-raiser in Connecticut yesterday, Michael Steele took a curious position on the war in Afghanistan. "This was a war of Obama's choosing. This is not something the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in," he said, apparently forgetting that the war began with widespread approval under President Bush. "If he's such a student of history, has he not understood that, you know, that's the one thing you don't do, is engage in a land war in Afghanistan?" he said, coming perilously close to quoting The Princess Bride's Vizzini. "All right, because everyone who has tried, over a thousand years of history, has failed." There's actually plenty of Democrats, in Congress and throughout the country, who would agree with that.

But Steele is the leader of the Republican Party, one that almost universally supports continuing America's military campaign in Afghanistan. When asked to explain the comments, Steele's spokesman basically just talked about something else entirely, indicating that they're not immediately certain how to spin their way out of this one. Steele may not have a lot of time — Bill Kristol has already called for his resignation, and he probably won't be the last.

Crystal Renn Appears to Have Lost More Weight

Ford posted photos of Crystal Renn posing in a Fashion for Passion tank, sales of which benefit photographer Nicholas Routzen's campaign for children and the arts. The blogosphere is shocked by how much weight she appears to have lost, especially after she looked to have lost weight before walking in the last Chanel cruise show, which was huge for her career. "These are one set of images we actually hope were photoshopped, for her sake," writes the Huffington Post. "Remember a few weeks ago when former plus-size model Crystal Renn walked in the Chanel Cruise show and everyone was, like, oh my gosh, she's lost so much weight? Well, it looks like that was just the beginning," says Racked.

Normally stories about a famous woman's weight fluctuations — damned if they lose, damned if they gain — just seem unfair. It's unsettling to read the same kind of things about Crystal Renn, too, but sadly, a model's career is so traditionally tied to her size and shape that if she is losing weight, it might affect her bookings. While Renn's curves are what made her successful, models are traditionally rewarded for being thin. It's unclear whether a plus-size model as famous as Renn would likewise be rewarded for weight loss, but hopefully she has no reason to try. It would be nice for any model's weight fluctuations, no matter what size she makes it big at, to not dramatically affect her work, and for stories like these not to be stories.

Three Heartbeats Away: Do We Need to Fix the President Pro Tempore System?

Daniel Inouye, looking good.

We have a new president pro tempore of the Senate — the person who, under dire circumstances, is third in line for the presidency. It's Daniel Inouye, the senior senator from Hawaii, a World War II veteran and Medal of Honor recipient. He got the job the way every president pro tempore does, by being the longest-serving member of the majority party. He's a good public servant, if not exactly a mind-blowing legislative thinker. And he's 85 years old.

Inouye replaces Robert C. Byrd, who died at 92 this week, and who had visibly been growing frail for several years. Byrd had been president pro tempore on and off since 1989, trading off with Republicans Strom Thurmond and Ted Stevens as the Senate's majority shifted. Stevens held the job from 2003 to 2007, departing at the age of 83. And Thurmond didn't cede the chair until he was literally wheeled out of the chamber at age 100. By then he was pretty well addled, and was regularly directed through floor votes by aides who would bellow instructions into his nearly deaf ear. "He shouldn't have been there," a Republican legislative aide once muttered to me, shaking his head.

The Senate has been full of old guys for a long time, but just like the general population, it's getting even older. It's now the grayest it's ever been, with a median age of 63. Add to that the increasing length of incumbency: Twenty three senators, nearly a quarter of the legislature, have been in office more than twenty years.

What, exactly, keeps one there for decades? A striking number of the longest-serving senators are from small states, and are exceptional at directing pork home. (Byrd was a hall-of-famer in that sport, as was Ted Stevens, and Inouye has sent a lot of money to Hawaii, too.) It's not outlandish to suggest that managing the business of a powerful and complex state like New York or California is, even for a legislator, inherently more policy-driven than doing so for Alaska or West Virginia, and therefore more likely to qualify someone to be president. Instead, we have a system that inherently favors provincial guys who are good at hanging on to their jobs.

Therefore, since the president pro tempore is chosen not for his power but for his length of service, the job is likely to always go to a very, very old political hack. Which is fine for most of the president pro tem's job: gavel-wielding when the vice-president is out doing vice-presidential things. But presidential succession is another matter. (Do we want someone three heartbeats away who may, in fact, have only three or four heartbeats left in him?)

It's hard to change rules like this. A presidential-succession post is not one people wish to give up, and it is, to an extent, a Constitutional matter. But one solution might be that the Senate agrees to, in the future, give the president pro tempore title to the majority leader. That would guarantee that someone vigorous takes the job. To forestall any accusation of power-grabbing or partisanship, the law might be written to take effect in 2020, because nobody knows which party will be in the majority by then. (Even Inouye would have to admit that, at 95, he'll probably be ready to step down.)

Till then, and fortunately for us, the third person in line is considerably less critical than the second one, and that's the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, who is an engaged and vigorous 70. Take good care of yourself, Ms. Pelosi. Just in case.

Nars Casts Daphne Guinness for the Fall Campaign, May Open a Store on Bleecker

That's not the porcelain face of some nobody trying to sell you makeup. That's Daphne Guinness trying to sell you the new $23 purple eye shadow François Nars made for and named after her. "When I started thinking about colors that meant Daphne to me, purple felt right," he explains of his creative process.

The fall Nars collection is expected to fetch $8 million in sales worldwide, which will no doubt help François make his first stand-alone store — which is slated to open in November — extra fabulous. The shop may be even more fabulous than Nars makeup inherently is if it's able to nestle into the Marc Jacobs empire on Bleecker Street, which is a possibility. "I will do special items which will only be available in the store — palettes, maybe a nail polish called Bleecker Street — and I want to sell DVDs of my favorite movies. Marc may do accessories. It’s going to be great," he explained. The only thing more fabulous than selling your favorite things in a store full of products that don't at all relate, except through you, is owning one's own island, which François does, of course, in Tahiti. He might put a book out about that next year, which he'll need to add to the store's merchandise mix if he wants to make his shop retain just the right balance of commercialism and eclecticism that makes tourists think the street is truly something special — and not just for its cupcakes.

Goldman ‘Built the Bomb’

Dr. Strangelloyd.

Phil Angelides's financial-crisis panel grilled Goldman executives this week over whether they undervalued AIG's mortgage assets in order to strengthen their own position. The bank, having bet against them, repeatedly valued the securities lower than rivals and demanded money from AIG, which was insuring them. These (often rapid) reductions in assessed value weakened AIG as other banks used the valuations and followed suit, asking for collateral. From the Journal:

Phil Angelides, the commission's chairman, said this week that Goldman "built the bomb" by developing complex mortgage securities and "built a bomb shelter" by betting against the mortgage market in 2007. "The question is, did they light the fuse" by lowering the value of mortgage securities, he said.

AIG exec Andrew Forster said that the insurance giant thought Goldman was screwing them, but had no internal valuation system to counter the bank's assessment. Still, Forster, like anybody suffering from Stockholm Syndrome, still has echoes of identity with his captors: "It would have been prudent to have hedged!" he squeaked.

Bronx Zoo Tricks Ugly Ibises Into Having Ibis Sex With Each Other

A flock of 21 ibises in the Bronx Zoo have not been having sex for about seven years, for some reason. Perhaps they just got tired of each other after so many years in the same confined space. Or, maybe it just takes a little extra something for one unattractive ibis to get aroused by another unattractive ibis. Whatever the cause, the birds got in the mood once a zoo ornithologist piped some "sexy mating calls" into the enclosure — like a bird version of an Isaac Hayes album, except he would be called Ibis Hayes. Apple Admits iPhone Was Just Pretending It Had Good Reception

Apple has heard the complaints about the iPhone 4's "death grip" problem, in which foolish attempts to hold the phone in your hand result in poorer reception, and it has discovered a simple explanation. "Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong," Apple said in a statement. "Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength." People who report a drop in signal strength when holding the phone a certain way "are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place." Does that make sense? Either way, a software fix available in the coming weeks will allow the phone to display its mediocre signal strength more accurately.

Cape Fear License Plate Is Scary Topical

Saw this license plate on an Audi in Times Square yesterday:

So that’s the person who beat me to the “CPE FEAR” vanity plate I wanted. I knew there was another rampant Nick Nolte fan in this town who owns a car. I tried to get “I LUV TRBL” too, but it was too long.

Now that I know where this dude parks, I can torment his family by making friends with his daughter then forcing him to give up the license plate to me. Also, I have a bunch of tattoos and I’m really muscular and it’s 1991.
