Subhash K. Jha speaks on I Hate LUV Storys

Swear to God and hope to die if I lie. But I really love love- stories even if they're spelt as 'luv -storys'. But debutant director Punit Malhotra's I Hate LUV Storys (IHLS) just proves a over-sassy, under-written, rudderless out-of-control disappointment, coming as it does from Karan Johar production house which in the last one year has given us two films by debutant directors -Rensil d'Silva's Kurbaan and Ayaan Mukerjee's Wake Up Sid-which made a difference to the way we look at contemporary commercial cinematic entertainment. IHLS is neither romantic enough nor cynical in sufficient measures about romantic cinema. Neither mushy nor tongue-in-cheek, the relationship between a dreamy-eyed romantic art -director Simran (Sonam, looking suitably dreamy-eyed and romantic) and a sardonic sneering cynical assistant-director Jay (Imran Khan) hovers uneasily between romance and its rejection. We never know which of the two is the guiding factor in the plot. So take a look. We have this goofy messy guy named Jay who hates his surname 'Dhingra' because it isn't 'cool.' Making fun of mushy films is. Even if your helping one to be made. The cool quotient in Punit Malhotra's screenplay spills out in unchecked amounts. Characters roll their eyes and chuckle loudly at the mention of romance. Their aggressive denial of all things lovey-dovey should have been backed up by oodles of basic common sense, warmth and witticism. The writing lacks all three qualities. The screenplay is uneven and the lines that the characters mouth are intentionally designed to be cool .They end up being unintentionally awkward. Urban cool, like glamour and chutzpah only works when it's done unselfconsciously. Most moments that take the narration towards the inevitable embrace of the diehard romantic and the laugh-hard cynic are strung together like one-line SMS jokes stretched into a love saga from here to New Zealand. Much of the mushy mismatch happens on the sets of a moody director (Samir Soni)'s film. The director's passion spills onto sets and characters who lampoon Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum…l De Chuke Sanam, Devdas and Saawariya. But a trueblue spoof is as tough to undertake as a true homage. Bhansali gets neither treatment. Samir Soni plays the mercurial director with warmth that you miss in the other characters. The film-within-film format creates a clutter in the screenplay that doesn't warrant or tolerate complexities. If the two protagonists fall in love on the sets of a romantic film, that's their look-out. The characters don't generate any empathy in us. What's worse, they seem to enjoy their self-absorbed definition of romance and commitment much more than we do. There are tongue-in-cheek references to the romantic cinema of Bhansali, Aditya Chopra and, ahem ahem. Karan Johar. We don't really know when that tongue goes out of the cheek. Nothing in the pacing of the plot suggests a well thought-out kismet for the proceedings or a graph for the characters. Shockingly, for the first time in a Karan Johar film the presentation is patchy. The colour schemes jump across various sequences unmatched. The haphazard chaos on a film set never seems unreal enough to be real. Even the chaos in the plot seems much too self-conscious. Imran Khan is charming when he isn't busy making faces and throwing lines into the air that we hardly find worth catching. His character's growth from a man who finds love a joke to a neo-Devdas who chokes on his angst is a direct descendent of Maamu Aamir Khan's splendidly-evolved character in Dil Chahta Hai. I bring up the 'Maamu' factor because Imran cheekily does so himself in some part of the crowded saturated soundtrack. While Sammir Dattani as the proper fiancé hardly gets a chance to have a say, Sonam Kapoor looks lovely and is apt at expressing the romantic yearnings of a girl who probably read all the Mills & Boon books before she turned 13. Her character suffers from a serious absence of motivation. One minute she's devoted to the nice sweet Gujarati boy (Sammir Dattani). The next minute she's confessing her love to the roguish Jay in a coffee shop. And then you go, 'Huh, when did that happen?' When did love turn into a string of sitcom jokes told without canned laughter? Love, we grew up believing to be blind. But not bland, for Cupid's sake! Does anyone really care why Simran chooses the Prem Rogue instead of the Prim Beau when in today's day and age every clear-thinking girl looks at her prospective husband's bank balance and mental equilibrium with equal dispassion? But then who said anything about dispassion and equilibrium over here? I Hate LUV Storys is filled with possibilities that don't even begin to crystallize; the protagonists are too busy trying not to be what they have set out to scoff at, rather than being true to character. The film's uneven pace and an absence of space for the lovers to get cosy for the camera let alone with one another, make this a big disappointment. Hate love stories? Not quite the entire genre, though this one tries hard.

Singh Is Kinng-2 ready to roll, Katrina's dates awaited

Before the brand runs out of steam Akshay Kumar has decided to run into the next instalment of Singh Is Kinng. Vipul Shah who was in two minds has decided to direct the sequel since Anees Bazmee seems too busy to do the needful. Says Vipul, "Yes, after much planning and plotting, and two years since the first film, we've finally cracked an idea that works. My writer Suresh Nair and I are happy with what we've come up with. And yes I'll be directing the sequel." Though Vipul is not willing to reveal much of the plot for the sequel at this juncture - at least not on record - it's reliably learnt that the sequel would begin where the first Singh Is Kinng trailed off, namely in Australia and then move to another country, apparently Canada which is Akshay's second home. Akshay's haste to start Singh Is Kinng 2 has a root cause. While playing a mona Sardar in Patiala House in London last month, he was repeatedly asked by Sikh fans in Great Britain when they'd get to see him as Singh again. Akshay immediately contacted Vipul from London and also urged him to direct the sequel. Says Akshay "Yes a lot of fans in the UK are eager to see us do a sequel to Singh Is Kinng again. And I've asked Vipul to get on with it." There is only one hitch. Singh's queen Katrina is completely booked till next year. And the sequel cannot be made without her. Laughs Vipul, "She won't let me or Akshay make it without her. We'll just have to see how her dates are worked out."

Punit Malhotra wanted to become an actor

"There are only three protagonists in my film played by Imran Khan, Sonam Kapoor and Sammir Dattani. The film is about their relationship with one another and how it changes in the course of the narration." That's how the far-from-nervous director Punit Malhotra describes the character-profile of his debut film I Hate LUV Storys. One hopes Punit is a better director than a speller. God and Karan Johar (in that order) know that Manish Malhotra's nephew Punit Malhotra came into Bollywood to be a leading man. He instead ended up as an apprentice in Karan Johar's production house to finally climb his way into independent direction with I Hate LUV Storys (IHLS). Apparently, Karan had assured Punit that his starry dreams would one day be realized. And everyone knows Karan always lives up to his promises. Punit at the moment prefers to dodge questions on his starry aspirations, although he does admit that he entered the movie industry to be a leading man. "I thought being Manish Malhotra's nephew would make things easier for me. But it did not. The kind of acting offers I got didn't excite me. So I decided to assist Karan. I've been with him from the time he made Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. So you see I can't bring myself to hate love stories even if I tried." When Karan suggested that Punit write a script. Punit instinctively turned to the world he grew up in. Situated in the movie industry, IHLS takes tongue-in-cheek pot-shots at the romantic cinema of Yash Chopra, Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar and even Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Naturally, Punit is concerned about how the industry bigwigs would react to the tongue-in-cheek spoofing of these romantic greats. Sighs Punit, "I respect all the names you've mentioned. I've grown up watching their films. I can't say I'm a diehard romantic like my producer Karan Johar. Or that I believe in love at first sight. Until it happens to me how can I tell? But I am not cynical about love like my hero Imran Khan in IHLS. Though the film begins by using these reference points, cynically my hero and the film comes around to believing in true love. I hope these near-legendary filmmakers would take the references to their cinema in the right spirit." Easier said than done! Filmmakers are already making not-so-discreet inquiries about what Punit is up to. Understandably the debutant is shaken but not stirred. "Once the film releases I'm sure everyone will understand how much I believe in the concept of true love. Sonam Kapoor and Sammir Dattani's characters who are in love with one another have been named Raj and Simran after Shah Rukh and Kajol in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. They are shown to be so much in love that it seems ridiculous to someone who hasn't experienced such passion. When Imran's character Jay enters this world he's quite amused and cynical. But he comes around. Sammir Dattani's character is a complete romantic at heart. I do believe in true love, and I hope that comes across." For his next film, Punit has apparently decided to cast Imran and Sonam besides himself. "It's too early to comment on my next. But I will say one thing. After a huge romantic hit like You've Got Mail, Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks came together again for Sleepless In Seattle. That too was a big success. Throughout the making of my film Karan, Imran and Sonam have been pillars of strength. Imran's last two films have not clicked. And Sonam has had no hits so far. So in a way all three of us were like newcomers starting out together."

But Ranbir the peace-maker is a new role he adopted to bring Prakash Jha and Nana Patekar together after their very public fall-out. Apparently, Ranbir who got along like a house on fire with Nana during the shooting of Raajneeti in Bhopal didn't quite relish the uneasy silence that prevailed between "two of my most favourite people". He decided to end the cold war between Nana and Prakash when on an impulse; he dialled Nana's number from Hong Kong when Ranbir, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpai and Prakash had gone for a Raajneeti event. When Nana answered the phone, Ranbir quickly handed over the phone to Prakash. Says a source, "On Ranbir's urging, Prakash and Nana spoke when Prakash was in Hong Kong. That's how the ice thawed between the two." Nothing succeeds like success. After the public bickering and open display of hurt anger and resentment between the two, Nana Patekar and Prakash Jha have sorted out their differences. And now Nana is in constant touch enjoying the heady success of Raajneeti and sharing his joy with the director. Prakash admits the cold war with Nana is over. "We are once again connected. Nana is delighted by the success of Raajneeti and is keeping tabs on the film's progress. He didn't come for the Raajneeti celebration on Wednesday night. But he called to say he wouldn't come because he never attends functions."
