Traditionally, most high schools gave only one student the coveted honor of being crowned valedictorian, but more high schools are now offering the title to multiple, equally high-achieving students, either in a bid to get more kids into college, or just because there are more overachievers out there today. Take, for instance, the creative valedictorians from Jericho high school, who have created a group skit to perform at graduation: "The seven [valedictorians] will perform a 10-minute skit titled '2010: A Jericho Odyssey,' about their collective experience at this high-achieving Long Island high school, finishing up with 30 seconds each to say a few words to their classmates and families."
This trend is nationwide: Stratford High School, in the suburbs of Houston, had thirty valedictorians last year, Cherry Hill High School in southern New Jersey had nine, St. Vrain Valley in Colorado had ninety-four within its district. Don Haddad, the superintendent of the St. Vrain Valley district said: "We have not lowered the bar to achieve more valedictorians. More kids now are getting over the bar." On the other hand, "It's honor inflation," said an outraged Chris Healy, an associate professor at Furman University. In any case, most of these groups of valedictorians would probably be getting into good colleges even without the title, which the Harvard admissions dean calls "an anachronism," anyway. Bethenny Frankel, re-imagined as a Dionysian goddess being tended to by her husband and her wedding planner. Bethenny Getting Married?, Bravo's new Real Housewives of New York City spin-off, is obsessed with its protagonist, the unstoppable Miss Bethenny Frankel: not a single scene is filmed without her. As a result, every other character on the show seems to be living in a world in which Bethenny Frankel is the planet around which all other humans revolve. And putting aside Frankel's quick wit, the show's premise alone isn’t a lot of fun: Frankel, with a hot significant other and a successful professional life, struggles with … what, exactly? (Granted, fun for us is judging a bunch of crazy people in conflict.) With Bethenny constantly teasing her intern, nagging her fiance, and having a once-an-episode meltdown inside her beautiful Tribeca apartment, she might not end up being "The Bethenny" of this show - the relatable, refreshing one. So let's look at the other characters, all of whom are thus far beating Frankel for the win in her own series and decreasing Frankel's likability in the process, while perhaps landing themselves a spin-off of their own. Max "The Hot Intern" Miesel: We're just going to say it: Frankel is cruelly blue-balling this kid. She's constantly asking him about his sex life, forcing him to shyly admit he's into women her age, and his adorable discomfort around her line of blunt questions is endearing. After hiring him (when he was the only straight candidate who applied for the job), Frankel told her fiance Jason that she wouldn't walk around her home naked while Max is around, and she'd act appropriately with him. Instead, we see her laying in bed in a bathrobe while Max literally picks out her panties for her! In a scene that borders on the erotic, she tells Max to pack the black panties and Max, full of lust and longing, can only murmur, "I would have picked the pink ones..." Hang in there, Miesel. With a smile like that, we suspect Andy Cohen's already mulling Max Quitting His Job?. Video evidence of Frankel's blue-balling, below:
Shawn "The Wedding Planner" Rabideau: While initially Shawn is bumbling and kind of annoying in his attempt to be the perfect wedding planner, his commitment to Frankel's big day won us over. Shawn's trying-to-stay-calm awkwardness in the face of Frankel's "It's Four Seasons or Bust" demands has scored him further points. Frankel, on the other hand, said she only hired him because she was in a time crunch. After Shawn manages to get the Frankel-Hoppy wedding held at The Four Seasons restaurant when the place was booked and he only had three weeks to do it, he even kindly brings Bethenny cotton candy. And all this for a woman who'd previously demanded he get her a seltzer just so he’d get out of her face.
Jason "Impossibly Sweet Fiance" Hoppy: What is there to say about Jason? Even Bethenny admits she has "no idea" why this sweet man is with her. He somehow looks masculine in a sash that says "Bride to Be," and he handles himself well around this self-proclaimed "strong, successful woman." We do fear for this somewhat simple-minded man in the face of Bethenny’s self-professed emotional issues, and because of Bravo's toxic nature, we wonder if we'll someday see a fame-mongering Hoppy starring in Jason Getting Divorced? (Remember Frankel: Andy Cohen has loyalties to nobody on this network but the viewers.) But so long as we keep those fears at bay, Hoppy's seeming normality is breath of fresh air on reality television. Mr. and Mrs. “Bethenny's In-Laws” Hoppy: Jason's mom told Bethenny, "I finally have a daughter," and takes her shopping for wedding dresses. Frankel makes the Hoppy parents breakfast frittatas and she does tear up when Mrs. Hoppy starts crying at the sight of her soon-to-be daughter-in-law in a wedding dress. But then Bethenny acted like she was doing the woman a favor, in therapy, when she was all, "I could have gone on my own." Worst of all, Frankel then holds it against Jason in an argument about how busy she's been going dress-shopping with his mom! She should be thanking these people for not holding it against her that she's dragged them on to Bravo. Frankel still seems authentic - or at least like she’s being as authentic as she is off-camera - and she’s got a quick, cynical sense of humor and enough personality and spunk to anchor her own series. But by the end of a few Bethenny-centric episodes, we kind of want all of these people to break free from this woman's chains! The problem with Frankel's character on this series is that now she's juxtaposed with kind, caring, authentic people instead of the insane Housewives, and she's filmed crying and complaining about her upper-class problems while these kind people inexplicably tend to her (many) needs and help her through her meltdowns. Viewers grew to love Bethenny because she seemed so “down-to-Earth,” like a woman who deserved happiness and could never quite find it, but now the circumstances of her life as an engaged TV star are no longer particularly relatable. We like all the people orbiting this woman’s world, but Bethenny herself may not end up being the hero of this story. Rob Pattinson may have told the New York Times last week that talking about Twilight all the time can get "boring," and that the "irrational hatred" lobbed his way as a result of his overexposure sort of bothers him, but he put his game face on for the Twilight Saga: Eclipse premiere in L.A. on Thursday. While Twihards behind a barricade chanted at the top of their lungs, Pattinson charmed reporters by half-joking, "They're going to riot!" We also learned that his favorite rapper is Nas, though the actor refused to rap some Nas lines on command. Also on that red carpet, Kristin Stewart awkwardly explained: "I grow everyday on a movie set. I feel more equipped at the end of every movie, like I want to go back and shoot the last one over again because I'm older and smarter." Nikki Reed managed to compose herself even less than Stewart, though, effusively saying: "To be a part of this is really special and it will never happen again in my life. I almost feel sometimes like I can float out of my own body and look at all these people screaming but it doesn't feel like it's for me or like I'm even a part of this sometimes." Oh, relax. It feels that way because they're not screaming for "you," but for some imaginary vampire version of you. Now publicity people, please bring back Rob Pattinson; he "gets" it. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said, depending on the track and strength of the storm, its winds could possibly force an evacuation of thousands of workers and vessels. In this scenario, the containment cap would be off while everyone was evacuated, and it would take fourteen days to reassemble everything. But if you ask Jill Hasling, executive director of the Weather Research Center in Houston, which provides weather forecasts to the oil industry, "[The storm] should have a very minimal effect on the cleanup," in all likelihood. Allen, understandably, is still hedging his bets: "We understand that [the storm] is moving westerly at this point, and does not threaten the site," he said today. "But we know that these tracks can change and are paying very close attention to it." Today, Tropical Storm Alex rained down on the coast of Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula. Source: Daily Intel | 26 Jun 2010 | 7:45 pm One Year After Michael Jackon’s Death, New Lawsuits are Filed, Questions Remain Michael Jackson died one year ago yesterday (and we even remember where we were when we first heard about it), but the financial issues and questions surrounding the singer’s death haven’t ceased. Yesterday, on the anniversary of his son’s death, Joe Jackson filed a wrongful death lawsuit in federal court against Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson’s former physician. In the suit, Joe Jackson claims that, the day of Michael Jackson's death, Murray "delayed calling paramedics … gave doctors false information about the drugs Jackson had been given ... and hindered efforts to revive Jackson in the ambulance," according to CNN. Ultimately the L.A. County coroner ruled that Jackson's death was caused by an overdose of propofol, and Jackson's suit alleges that Murray "said nothing to emergency room doctors about the propofol … he had given Michael Jackson earlier in the day." Murray’s lawyers are telling a different story: "There is no way that Dr. Murray pumped Jackson full of propofol sufficient for major surgery [as alleged in Jackson's suit]," Murray’s attorney Ed Chernoff said. "No way. I would stake anything that I own on this fact." On top of this suit, Murray is still facing charges of involuntary manslaughter. "His daughter Paris, 12, has turned her bedroom into a shrine to her 'daddy,' where she is surrounded by his photographs … [Jackson's] boys Prince, 13, and eight-year-old Blanket bravely talk about wanting to make [their father] proud … and then lapse into silent moments." The kids now live with their grandmother, Katherine. Paris, Katherine says, "has that lovely way, just like [Michael], and I see his talent in her. She plays the piano and she wants to be an actress." Prince, on the other hand, is "serious about a lot of things. He wants to be a camera-man or produce movies."
