Source: Yahoo! News: Entertainment News | 25 Jun 2010 | 9:14 pm Party Down Season Finale Recap: We Belong Together![]() This is how the Party ends, my friends. Not with a bang, but a wedding. Still, if this is the end of the line for the most critically adored/commercially ignored sitcom since Arrested Development (R.I.P.), then what a way to go. “Constance Carmel Wedding” rescues Jane Lynch from the misery of her Glee mega-success, allowing her one last go at her greatest creation: the delightfully dippy Constance Carmel, star of Dingleberries, notorious drunk dialer and, now, soon to be wife to Howard Greengold, a sleazy, septuagenarian producer with an oxygen tank, a bum ticker and a set of what I believe is referred to in the lecher community as “happy hands.” (In a coup, Howard is played by Alex Rocco. It's easily his best role since the glory days of The Famous Teddy Z (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Famous_Teddy_Z)). And Constance’s wedding has everything you’d expect from a New Age-Jewish ceremony: dramatic confessions of love, high-test marijuana cookies, an emo song that might be about the Holocaust and Henry finally maybe embracing the good kind of crazy. Also: Patrick Duffy! Each of our beloved Pink Ties gets to shine in what could be (should be? will be?) their final catered event, egged on to goofy new heights by the peerless Lynch. Clueless as ever, Constance’s real joy at seeing her old workmates is also barbed. “How’s my favorite bartender?” she asks Henry before gushing, “you guys look the same!” The only person who doesn’t get a warm welcome is Lydia, who introduces herself as “your replacement!” leading to all sorts of delightful, passive-aggressive undercutting. (Seriously, we’d watch a Mullally/Lynch sitcom. The height difference alone = comedy gold!) Ron doesn’t fare to well either: his noisy entrance seemingly causes Howard to drop dead — only to pop back up again laughing at his hilarious “little joke.” Love this guy! Anyway, Ron has bigger issues than potential manslaughter: namely that Danielle, his soulmate (they finish each other’s food, er, sentences) is a guest at the wedding along with her cuckolded fiance, Stuart Zune (you know, of Zune Bouncy Houses). Also there? Danielle’s dad, Bolus Lugozshe, the head of Party Down catering and the man about to give Ron his dream job at the company just as long as Ron doesn’t do something stupid, like steal his precious daughter away from his beloved soon-to-be son-in-law. Problems! Meanwhile, Roman is ignorantly nibbling on three wildly potent pot cookies that will, according to their hippie creator, “make your colon sing.” Soon Roman is calling the paramedics from the bathroom, not because his colon is doing the Jeff Buckley version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” but because he’s asking people to take off their “sun helmets” and generally being the funniest super high person we’ve seen on television since Jennifer Coolidge in the last episode of season one. (It’s not all bad for Roman: after being led on a spirit quest that involves imagining himself as a self-devouring serpent, he dictates what may well be his masterpiece to the helpful hippie who jots it all down on a very large roll of toilet paper.) What else? Kyle, when not laughing at Roman’s Vision Quest, performs a song written specially for Constance, his fellow misunderstood Aryan, with his band Karma Rocket. After taking the time to butter up an elderly Jewish powerbroker by explaining what emo is (reminds us of our book tour!), Kyle takes the mic to perform “My Struggle,” a song he thinks is about making it in Hollywood, but judging by its lyrics about money, conspiracy, trains, and giving people numbers, it’s actually about the Holocaust. Or as he puts it, the “Holo-what?” Classic. As for Henry, when he’s not cleaning up urine in the Ladies Room, he’s busy reading a script called Velour that Kyle is up for a part in but, being Kyle, doesn’t understand. Henry is really into it, showing Casey a new side of him: the side that kinda cares about stuff. But the two are soon drawn into a dispute over a last minute pre-nup that Howard’s icy daughter (played by Cassie from Eastbound & Down!) is demanding her father sign before he marries that “cunt spending our fortune on scented candles.” The wedding itself is a wild one: Ron declares his love for Danielle and gets decked by the justifiably aggrieved Stuart for his trouble and Patrick “Duffles” Duffy tries to win Constance back by reminding her of the time they made love in a glider plane over the rainforest and again in the waterfall where they crashed. But no dice. Constance is in love. (“Gold digger actress pursues wealthy producer with a heart condition,” sputters Howard’s daughter. Constance: “Oh, I know. It’s like a fairy tale!”) Also, she was drunk when she left an hour long message on Duffles’s voicemail. Back to Dallas for you! Of course, Constance and Howard’s wedded bliss lasts as long as it takes for their “Just Married” limo to get halfway down the driveway. Howard dies in the backseat. Oh well. But! He signed his pre-nup as “Jack Shit.” Constance gets the money! All is well! Except all is not well: Casey finds out her heralded scene in the “Apatow movie” has been cut. Henry tries to comfort her but Casey calls him on it: “Maybe if we were the same kind of crazy but we’re not. Because if you’re not crazy enough to believe it for you than how can you believe it for me?” she asks before walking away. And for a second it seems like Party Down is again going to end a season by ripping apart hipster America’s number one dream couple. But the next day, at a “Monday Bar Mitzvah” (natch), Henry isn’t there. “He had something to do,” Casey is told. And slowly a creeping smile of realization spreads across her face. And we’re out on Henry going in for an audition. Ready to actually try again, one more time. Crazy? Maybe. But at least this time it’s the right kind of crazy. So! A hilarious end to a great season but also a tonally perfect one. There are no instant successes in Party Down — except maybe for Ron, who one day after nearly losing everything and getting punched in the nose is now happily co-habitating with Danielle, still in line for his dream job, and even adopting a talking bird. The fact that the struggle continues for this group of lovable, self-deluding losers actually makes us think that the show could survive and even thrive in a third season without its tiny, talking-bird-like leading man (who is now committed to the almost-as-wonderful Parks & Rec): with Henry acting again, we could foreground Casey as the one struggling between disillusionment and dreams, and god knows Lizzy Caplan is up for anchoring a show. We could watch her for days and not necessarily for the same two reasons that Howard Greengold can. Godspeed, Party Down. This year alone you brought us Guttenberg and Duffles, a man hotboxing himself in a coffin and the most comfortably casual relationship on television. You will be missed. Even if you never did teach us, exactly, which parts the flanks are on a woman. Online (US) - Top Stories | 25 Jun 2010 | 5:07 pm Another Model Down: Viveka Babajee Commits Suicide![]() Tom Nicon, Daul Kim, and Viveka Babajee Bollywood actress and Indian model Viveka Babajee, 37, was found dead today, Thaindian News reports. She allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan in her suburban Mumbai apartment. According to The Calcutta Telegraph, the former Miss Mauritius titleholder and one-time face of Coca-Cola and Kama Sutra ads in India, suffered from severe depression. Babajee's death adds to an ever-growing list of recent model suicides, loaning credence to what Jezebel contributor and ex-model Jenna Sauers posited last month: "Suicidal models are fashion's worst trend." Indeed, in the past two years, a hauntingly high number of models have taken their own lives. There was 20-year-old Korean superstar Daul Kim, of course, who stalked down runways for Alexander McQueen and Chanel before hanging herself in her Paris apartment last November. French model Noémie Lenoir tried to kill herself in May; and last Friday, one day before the men's fashion shows kicked off, 22-year-old French model Tom Nicon plunged from his apartment in Milan, in what authorities suspect was a suicide. And that's to say nothing of the deaths of Russian Vogue cover model Ruslana Korshunova, Colombian model-turned-TV presenter Lina Marulanda, Canadaian bombshell Hayley Kohle, not to mention Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow. But are any of these suicides really connected, or just a tragic coincidence? Do they speak to the tremendous pressures of a looks-obsessed industry, or inadvertently glamorize the act as noble in some sick way? Dr. Lanny Berman, executive director of the American Association of Suicidology in Washington D.C., says that in the month following Marilyn Monroe's fatal overdose, the numbers of young women dying in the same manner spiked. They were most likely victims of a “non-specific loss of hope,” he says, plagued by the idea that if someone so successful couldn’t make it, how could they? But Dr. Berman is hesitant to judge the rash of fashion suicides in a similar light, saying that “if you then suggest that there is a cluster going on of imitative suicide, you then influence the problem." To prove that these are indeed copycat suicides, he adds, models would have to have shown undue interest in, or looked up to those peers who took their own lives — "otherwise the evidence is coincidental.” Sauers thinks it's important to recognize the "extremely high-pressure environment" that models exist in. “When you’re successful, you’re sort of surrounded by people who have a financial interest in your career, who want you to be working hard all the time,” she says, further noting that agents “may not necessarily look very kindly on the notion of taking time off, even to deal with an obvious mental health problem.” Preston Chaunsumlit, a freelance casting agent and close friend of the late Daul Kim says the model once told him she took 17 flights in three weeks. Four days before she died, she wrote on her blog, “Oh but how lonely it is. then and now.” Chaunsumlit, who met Daul in New York in 2007 at an Ohne Titel casting, and says he spoke with her almost daily, also wonders if his industry was somehow complicit. “I’m kind of responsible for these young people and one of them I am really close with is not here any more,” he says, “I asked other casting people, ‘Are we doing something weird? People are dying all around us.’” Charlotte Ronson sees campaigns like the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s 2007 “Beauty is Health”, which asked designers to avoid using rail-thin models, as a step toward alleviating job-related stress. “There are pressures of any industry, but when it’s that transparent and it’s all about your exterior,” says Ronson, it “is effecting how you feel about yourself.” Certain industries do have higher rates of suicide, says Dr. Berman, though he was not aware of any studies of its prevalence in fashion. “But even in industries where suicide rates are higher than others, it’s always going to be the most vulnerable,” he says. “You never want to leave the impression that this is something that healthy people do." But Gaspard, Tom Nicon’s agent at Next, says the model seemed healthy enough. “Sometimes, you know, you have some kind of fragile kid,” he says, “but [Nicon] was the last person you would expect [to commit suicide].” Though Chaunsumlit says Kim griped to him about her day-to-day annoyances, it all sounded pretty normal — “growing-pains.” Neither Gaspard nor Chaunsumlit knew how either model truly suffered, until it was too late. Now that Kim's gone, says Chaunsumlit, "it [just] feels like she is on a really busy, busy schedule. The difference is that I’m not going to see her in the magazines anymore." News: Entertainment Reviews | 25 Jun 2010 | 4:00 pm A Downside to Summer: The Vera Bradley–Bag Onslaught![]() Is it true that summer is the time when more Vera Bradley bags can be seen on the streets of New York than any other season? The New York Post says so in its random ode to the Vera Bradley bag, which the paper reports can be seen in droves at the beginning and end of a summer weekend, as allegedly stylish women stuff their allegedly stylish clothes inside the quilted floral monstrosities and sling them over their shoulders as they depart for and return from their beach jaunts. This seems to us like just another reason to avoid the weekend trips, but then again, the Vera Bradley bag has never been one of our favorite things. The problem is how, outside of a grandmother's country cottage, it ruins the scenery. Everything's normal in your line of vision, and then all of a sudden you notice someone brought a little piece of their grandmother's bedspread onto the subway — or into the bar, or onto the street, or wherever in public they may be — and then you realize that it's not an oversize, extra-fancy neck pillow, but something someone saw fit to pair with an outfit probably involving flats with a decorative metal plate on the toe. So the Vera Bradley bag is not for us (there are so many other weekend bags you can use), but do disagree if you'd like, in the comments. At best, they've impacted the global economy. At worst, they've perpetrated destruction on the world that it will take years to fix. The heads of many CEOs have rolled because of this, but in many cases, those heads have landed softly on 1,000-count pillowcases in Greenwich, having been gently laid to rest there by billowy golden parachutes. Meanwhile, the public is left to ogle astoundedly outside the privet hedges. But in the case of BP CEO Tony Hayward, CNNMoney says that's not likely to be the case. Here's why: • Upon departure, Hayward stands to gain nearly 1.2 million "performance shares" under a deferred compensation plan for company directors. But those shares, which would vest in 2011, are contingent on "an assessment of safety and environmental sustainability," according to BP's last annual report. Yeah. Those aren't going to vest. Source: Entertainment - Google News | 25 Jun 2010 | 2:46 pm The Playbook: How TV Land Made the Old-School Hot in Cleveland Into a New Hit![]() A month after the broadcast networks used their annual upfront presentations to unveil a raft of new comedies aimed at viewers under 35, TV Land — a cable network known for appealing to oldsters who just want to live in the past — scored a summer success with a sitcom that feels like it was created from a Mad Lib in 1993: Hot in Cleveland revolves around three Los Angeles socialites (sitcom hall-of-famers Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, and Wendie Malick) who move to Ohio and bunk with a sass-spewing Betty White. While comedy elites fret over the fates of the quirky Party Down and Better Off Ted, middle America seems to have made this oldest-school comedy a hit. And here’s how it happened. THE DILEMMA: Sure, everybody loves Raymond. And Lucy. And Roseanne. But while classic TV shows are great, a few years ago TV Land realized there was no growth potential in its all-rerun model; people could just as easily see them online or on DVD. After scoring some initial success with first-run reality shows (She's Got the Look, High School Reunion), the network decided to try its hand at original comedies that might appeal to the network's core audience of viewers aged 25 to 54. TV Land programming chief Keith Cox started reading scripts that the big networks had passed on, but, "Except for the stuff CBS developed, they were all so young-skewing," he says. THE SOLUTION: As Cox was mulling how to make TV Land into a sitcom player, Suzanne Martin, a veteran Frasier writer, was at work on a comedy pitch that had first come to her in 2008. "I was in my car the day Estelle Getty died, and they were playing clips from Golden Girls," she recalls. "I started wondering why that sort of show wasn't on anymore. There are so many actresses of a certain age, to use an expression that's been overused, and they're just out there and not working. I thought, 'Wouldn't it be great to tap into that?'" The idea for Hot in Cleveland percolated for more than a year, then popped up while Martin was meeting with Will & Grace alum Sean Hayes and his Hazy Mills Productions partner, Todd Milliner. "I was doing a laundry list of loglines, and that one made them laugh out loud," she remembers. Then, a few days later, Hayes and Milliner were pitching TV Land's Cox reality concepts (the duo had done Situation: Comedy for Bravo), when Cox asked if they had any scripted ideas. Even though they technically didn't have the rights to Martin’s idea, Hayes and Milliner mentioned it. "We said we loved it and that we had to have it," Cox says. "We scooped it up right away ... [And] not only was the premise funny, it had a great hook. I could also relate, being from Kentucky.” When the Hazy Mills guys told Martin her idea had been bought, Martin was initially puzzled. "It was like, 'TV Land?'" she remembers. But she quickly said yes. THE CASTING: TV Land ordered a Hot pilot last fall. Martin had pictured White in the show from the beginning, though TV Land only envisioned the octogenarian as a guest star, because of cost concerns. (Indeed, the March 2010 press release announcing Hot's series green-light mentions White only in passing.) While Cox won’t discuss the specifics of his budget, industry insiders estimate that a Hot episode costs at least 25 percent less than the $1.3 million or so it would cost on ABC or CBS. Because money was tight, there was only going to be room for three women in the ensemble. White was already in her post-Proposal renaissance, but after her Super Bowl Sunday Snickers ad and the Facebook campaign to get her to host Saturday Night Live, her national domination could not be denied. TV Land realized that the added costs associated with making White a full-time cast member would easily be offset by the massive marketing hook her involvement would provide. Yes, Hot is an ensemble, but for bloggers and TV columnists, it was just another peg for the never-ending story of how Betty White Controls the Universe. (Though, to TV Land’s chagrin, waiting to make the decision cost them: Martin says that White only got more expensive in the interim.) THE SELL: In order to avoid confusing viewers who naturally associate TV Land with oldies, the network's marketing team opted to play down the fact that the show ... aired on TV Land. "We were conscious of the fact that people might assume it was an existing series," says Kim Rosenblum, who heads up the network’s marketing. So ads that aired in heavy rotation on other networks minimized mention of TV Land, instead referring viewers to visit hotincleveland.tv to find out on what number channel the show aired in their neighborhoods. And to battle the perception of it as an old show, every print ad featured the words "a new comedy" prominently positioned under the show's logo. THE RESPONSE: Martin was expecting critics to be cool toward Hot since "critics like to slam" traditional multi-camera sitcoms. "It's like when you give your 3-year-old broccoli: You're not expecting a good reaction." But lo, the power of Betty was strong and resulted in surprisingly kind reviews. Viewers were even more enthused: The nearly 5 million who watched the June 16 premiere represented TV Land's biggest tune-in ever, and outdrew the same night's premiere of Top Chef D.C. on Bravo, as well as TNT’s drama Hawthorne and TBS’s comedy Are We There Yet? This week’s second episode dropped about 30 percent, but Cox says he expected the fall-off. Hot still was the No. 1 show on all of cable Wednesday among TV Land's core 25 to 54 audience, and as a result, "I have very high hopes that we'll pick up season two shortly," Cox says. If the show does return, TV Land will likely up its production order from season one's ten-episode run. WHAT'S NEXT: TV Land has already given a thumbs-up to its second first-run comedy, Retired at 35, in which a New York City businessman decides to move in with his Florida-based parents (equally familiar sitcom faces George Segal and Jessica Walter). Cox has also started development on a new batch of comedy scripts, with plans to shoot one or two more pilots by year's end. The behind-the-scenes talent on Hot (Martin took advantage of the slow sitcom market to snap up high-quality writers, including four fellow Frasier alums) is no doubt helping Cox attract better pitches. The ratings don’t hurt, either: "Now that (writers and actors) have seen the show and the ratings, they want to be a part of it," Cox says. However, don’t expect this success to ripple through the networks and inspire them to return to their multi-camera comedy roots. Despite Hot’s hot debut — and CBS's continuing luck with traditional half-hours such as The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men — the broadcast nets seem much more interested in niche comedies, as evidenced by the slew of single-camera shows being prepped for next season. But at least now traditional sitcom writers have options. "Cable is the new network," says Martin. "It's this whole new world where there's less red tape ... and people seem more free to just let you do what you'd like to do." The departure of Gerry Marzorati from the top spot at the Times Magazine opens up one of the most high-profile seats in magazine journalism. After the shuffles at W and T, this creates another fun guessing game for the media industry. Who will succeed him? Marzorati has been in place since 2004, when New York's own Adam Moss left. The new editor has an opportunity to shape one of the last and most widely read fonts of long-form journalism out there. Already people are talking (but not the Times, which isn't commenting). So who is on the list? Here are some educated guesses — internal and external — in decreasing order of likelihood. 1. James Bennet: The Atlantic editor is a natural choice: He left the Times in 2006 to take over the monthly after having served as a White House correspondent and Jerusalem bureau chief. He was also known for his long-form pieces for the Times Magazine. When he went to the Atlantic, he said he saw the move as "a chance to help, encourage and preserve the practice of serious, long-form journalism." He'd be able to do that back at the Times, though it might come at the expense of some of the lighter elements of the magazine added in the past decade. Source: Yahoo! News: Fashion News | 25 Jun 2010 | 1:14 pm Washington Post Blogger Resigns for Having an Opinion![]() This past April, Dave Weigel, who had been reporting on the tea-party movement and the right in general for the Washington Independent, was hired by the Washington Post to do the same on a new blog hosted by their website called Right Now, which we've linked to frequently. Today Weigel, a sort of liberal-leaning libertarian who has also written for Reason, resigned from the Post after coming under fire for some off-the-record e-mails he sent to members of the JournoList listserv basically a discussion board for 400 prominent liberal writers, which its founder, Ezra Klein, has now decided to disband and delete entirely which were leaked to FishBowlDC and the Daily Caller. What was so heinous about the e-mails that they precluded Weigel from continuing to run his blog? He wished that "amoral shut-in" Matt Drudge would "set himself on fire"; accused the GOP of using the media to "violently, angrily divide America" out of racism; and disparaged Newt Gingrich, Pat Buchanan, Sarah Palin, and Rush Limbaugh. Weigel has previously gotten some heat for referring to gay-marriage opponents as "bigots." In other words, Weigel like every reporter, blogger, journalist, news anchor, human has an opinion, one that he expressed with the expectation that it would remain private. It would be naïve and somewhat delusional to think that the bloggers at the Corner don't have the same level of personal animosity for Markos Moulisas, Keith Olbermann, Nancy Pelosi, or Barack Obama that Weigel does for Drudge, Palin, et al. If somebody were to dredge up their personal e-mails, we imagine they would contain a bit of name-calling and accusatory language about Democrats and liberal media personalities. Would they then be declared incapable of writing about Democrats? Of course not. One would hope that their personal biases didn't taint their ability to report and opine fairly, if not neutrally, which Weigel has, to our eyes, always done. Pure neutrality was never intended for Weigel as it would be for a traditional news reporter or even many bloggers at other sites. He was hired to blog for the Post shortly after they brought in unabashed liberal Ezra Klein. At the time Klein was hired, the Post's executive editor, Marchus Brauchli, said, "As a blogger, he has more latitude than reporters to reach conclusions. It’s inevitable we will employ more people who have that ability.” It was a "new paradigm" that the paper “would very much like to replicate,” he said. It does seem that the Post may not have understood that Weigel wasn't himself a conservative when they hired him. If that's a problem for them, then they "set Weigel up for a fall, and themselves for embarrassment," as Politico's Ben Smith writes today. There's the argument that Weigel is entitled to his beliefs, but he shouldn't be tasked with specifically covering the conservative movement if he despises so much of it (Weigel also voted for Ron Paul, and reportedly "revealed a fondness for Ronald Reagan, a willingness to vote for Bobby Jindal as president, and agreed that Van Jones should have been fired for his 9/11 trutherism"). It's not a totally unreasonable position. But our political discourse would benefit a lot more from people like Weigel covering the GOP, and people like, say, sane conservatives David Frum or Ross Douthat covering the progressive movement, than only allowing writers to cover ideologies and political figures with which they're already in lock-step agreement. Not only did he cut in front of a line of about 2,000 people, but he did so in order to snag an iPhone 4. Meaning he cut 2,000 Apple Fanatics.
Which leads us to wonder… Jason Bateman seems like a pretty reasonable guy. Intelligent, even. Why on Earth would he go in person to pick up the phone, and then agree to skip the line? Does this man not have an assistant he can send out at 2 am to line up for one of these phones? Or could he not have done the smartest thing, which was to pre-order it? Or perhaps Bateman underestimates the niceness of most Los Angelenos. The people of L.A. are usually pretty easy going when it comes to everything, including line-skipping. For example, I was at the Arclight theater about a year ago waiting to validate parking when some surfer idiot and his girlfriend waltzed in front of a giant line to stamp his own ticket. And no one said a word! So when I called the guy an assh*le, within earshot of course, he listened. And felt hurt. It felt great.
