Fox Entertainment chief Kevin Reilly, who flirted heavily with Coco but ended up not going all the way, predicted Wednesday at a Beverly Hills TV-industry roundtable that O'Brien wouldn't be able to get above a 1.0 Nielsen rating in the advertiser-worshiped demographic of viewers under 50. "The decimal will be on the left side of the number, not the right side," Reilly said. Cable usually doesn’t reach the heights that broadcast does, he added, and had Conan ended up at Fox, "there would have been an enormous amount of pressure that the decimal was on the right side." That’s all well and good except for one thing: The decimal point is currently on the left side for the big boys of network late night. For the past two weeks, both Jay Leno and David Letterman have been averaging below a 1.0 in the 18 to 49 demo. Last week, Jay earned a 0.9 to Dave's 0.8; two weeks ago, both shows were at a 0.9. Sure, it's summer, overall viewing levels at the networks are lower, and the NBA playoffs on ABC, which ran late on the East Coast, might have impacted averages as well. But even during the regular season, rating trends for the network late-night shows were headed downward. In May 2009, Late Night and Tonight both had their decimal points where Reilly thought they should be — but during the May sweeps, without the excitement of a sextortion scandal or Cocogate, Dave managed only a 0.9, and Leno was just barely above a 1.0. There's a good chance, of course, that once viewers return to check out the new fall shows, both Jay and Dave will climb back to non-fraction territory, but not by that much. And it’s worth pointing out that Comedy Central's Daily Show With Jon Stewart often averages a 0.8 with adults 18 to 49; same thing with Adult Swim. So execs can arbitrarily gauge success by a decimal point, but if they look past the period, they’ll see that in late night, at least, there really isn't that much of a difference these days between cable and broadcast. Today marks a historic day in the world of “Insane People Who Line Up For Sh*t.” On one crippled, carpelly hand, you have the long-awaited iPhone 4 being released today, causing rich tech nerds to drop what their doing (their own penises) and head down to their local Apple retailer to be the first people to spend more money on a phone that will get cheaper in roughly 9.9 hours. And on the other, self-mutilated hand, you have your Twilight devotees, people so dedicated to the world of Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) that they would gladly “In the Line of Fire” themselves to save their heroes and make the franchise live on. They also almost certainly “vant do drink your blood,” because they find it sexy. Before you think that I’m being too harsh, it should be known that I’m wearing Twilight nail polish at the moment, and am, hence, not one to judge. (And yet, here I go.) Tonight, is the premiere of Twilight: Eclipse, and thousands of fans camped out in Los Angeles for the chance of glimpsing R-Pattz and K-Stew in person. But what would a Twilight campout be with your Edward pillowcase and blankie? A lonely one, we can assure you. And then there are your iPhone camper-outers. Sure, maybe not as openly rabid as your typical twi-hard, but believe us: If it were possible to have legitimate sex with an iPhone, the boys in line at the Apple Store would also be clutching a giant Steve Jobs’ sleeping bag. Luckily, most of these folks have enough money where they can just pay a good old fashioned prostitute to put a Belkin iCase up themselves before copulation for a comparably pleasurable experience. Now it costs 10 dollars, which was maybe a bajillion dollars back in 1935 when I was in high school. And all the cute boys worked at Aber and the sizes made you feel thin. As my friend once said, trying to describe how fat someone was, “She’s like a size 10…Abercrombie.” Harsh! Anyways, as we all know Abercrombie has descended into cheesiness and terribleness. Or was it always like that? Did Mr. Abercrombie and Mr. Fitch discriminate against their non-perfect looking staff and tell people to be mean to the uglies that walked into their store to buy hunting gear (that had giant A&F logos printed on it) in 1892?
