News: Entertainment Reviews | 23 Jun 2010 | 12:24 am Industry Roundup: Pinto and Lithgow Rise To The Occasion![]() Monkey Business: John Lithgow and Freida Pinto are joining the cast of Rise of the Apes, Fox’s prequel to the Planet of the Apes franchise starring James Franco. The film, directed by Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist), is centered on a scientist (Franco) working on a cure for Alzheimer’s which he is testing on apes. Lithgow will play Franco’s “Alzheimer’s-stricken father,” and Pinto will play the female lead, a primatologist. Thank god we have Franco's discourse to remind us that Pinto is not, in fact, a primatologist in real life. [Heat Vision/HR] Rich Gets Richer: Jason Reitman has optioned the movie rights to Elliot Allagash, a novel by Saturday Night Live writer Simon Rich, who will write the adaptation. Reitman intends to produce the film, though it’s unclear whether or not he will direct. Allagash, a “satiric take on private schools and the excesses of the rich,” follows a boy named Seymour Herson who is regularly picked on before he is mentored by Elliot Allagash, a “teen who regularly gets drunk and enjoys villainy.” Though there's probably only so much Allagash can do to help a dude stuck with the name Seymour Herson. [HR] XX Marks The Spot: Indie darlings the xx will be embarking on a fall tour of North America, which the group is heralding as “the last chance to see the band play for quite a while.” The L.A. band Warpaint will open for the September and October dates. Perhaps they'll return Shakira's favor and cover "Hips Don't Lie." [Pitchfork] Penguins Are Back: Mark Waters (Freaky Friday, Mean Girls) is “circling” to direct Mr. Popper’s Penguins, the 20th Century Fox adaptation of the 1938 children’s book that originally had Noah Baumbach and Ben Stiller on board. Considering Waters' previous films, maybe he can get Lindsay Lohan some work out of this. [Variety] Ruben's Babe: Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) will direct the comedy Babe in the Woods, written by Mike White (Nacho Libre, The School of Rock), for Columbia. Babe is about a female freshman from the Midwest who arrives at Yale and is targeted by the New Jersey mob, which is almost as bad as gaining the freshman fifteen. [HR] Star-Crossed: Canadian band Stars, who recently released album The Five Ghosts, will be touring North America in September after a summer of European dates. The band will begin the North American leg in New York in late September and finish up with a few shows in Canada in early November. Source: Yahoo! News: Entertainment News | 22 Jun 2010 | 11:42 pm Report: Oscars Could Move to January![]() The Academy of Motion Picture of Arts & Sciences is - pretty shockingly - considering moving up the date of the 2011 Oscars to January, according to a Deadline report. The early announcement of the show’s producers and director also hints at the possibility of the move from the scheduled February 27, 2011 date. The shakeup would have significant implications not just for awards season, but for the movie industry as a whole. A January Oscars would conflict with the Golden Globes and SAGs (and move ahead of the February BAFTAS), and also condense the amount of time AMPAS members would have to screen movies, meaning it would undoubtedly dramatically alter how studios time the release of their movies this year. But before anyone gets all worked up quite yet, Deadline points out one potential hitch in the plan: the Academy hasn't gotten the hang of, well, things like e-mail: “There's a zero percent chance that the Executive team can figure out how to logistically coordinate voting that soon, especially with all the old people who don't do electronic mail," a Deadline source said. "And especially because [executive director] Bruce Davis won't do anything that utilizes technology."

In the most high-profile of today’s primary races, Nikki Haley secured the Republican nomination for South Carolina governor, with a decisive victory that places her one win away from becoming the state’s first female governor. Overcoming her liaisons-with-bloggers and racial slur scandals, the Palin-endorsed Haley will now take on Vincent Sheheen in the general election. South Carolina could also make history on a different front with Tuesday victor Tim Scott, whose hopes of being elected as the state's first black Republican congressman are still alive. Scott defeated Paul Thurmond, the son of late Sen. Strom Thurmond. Additionally, in a slight surprise, Rep. Bob Inglis (who is not a Glenn Beck fan), who served six terms (11 years) in office, was defeated, the fifth incumbent to lose his or her race this tumultuous primary season. In other states: North Carolina secretary of state Elaine Marshall won the Democratic nomination comfortably and will face off with Sen. Richard Burr in November; and Harold Johnson beat Tea Party radical Tim D’Annunzio, in an outcome that will please the GOP. Meanwhile, in Mississippi, Tea Party candidate Bill Marcy overtook fellow Tea Partyer Richard Cook, and will take on Rep. Bennie Thomas this fall. In Utah, Mike Lee defeated Tim Bridgewater in the race to see who will square off with Democratic nominee Sam Granato to take over as senator; and, one of the incumbents immune to the anti-establishment sentiment, Democrat Rep. Jim Matheson won his primary contest. The money may have been a small consolation for the missing limb, but hey, he was the one falling in the one place in the city where we know trains will run over you, and somebody was paying him millions of dollars for it. He could replace his unexciting human leg with a high-tech prosthetic and still have plenty of money left over for as many six-packs and bottles of Jager as his heart desired. But it was not to be. A state appeals court has overturned the earlier decision and thrown out the case because the verdict which Mayor Bloomberg called "incomprehensible" was based on "impermissible speculation" about whether the train's conductor should have been able to stop in time. Hopefully Dibble didn't blow all his money stocking up on Jager already, although he'll need it now more than ever. The 235-building expansion is one-third of what the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation is calling the South Village Historic District, so the group is only relatively happy today. "We are thrilled that the first piece of this neighborhood which we have been fighting for nearly a decade to protect has finally been granted landmark status," said the group's vocal executive director, Andrew Berman. "However, we are equally distressed that so much of the neighborhood has been lost while we have been waiting for action from the city, and we fear that much more will be lost while we wait for the remaining two-thirds of the neighborhood to be considered." From the group's release:
The group lists the Circle in the Square Theater, Sullivan Street Playhouse, Provincetown Playhouse, Tunnel Garage, and W.H. What used to be an eye-roll of a season — if you could even call it that — is now an exhaustive precursor to the madness that is everything else on the fashion calendar (spring, fall, menswear, couture, etc.). How did this happen? When did resort, a collection traditionally targeting well-to-do vacationers, snowball into such an unwieldy undertaking? And what implications would an official third season have on the fashion industry, its constituents, and the public at large? We asked designers, editors, buyers, and other industry players to weigh in on these questions and more — including what to call the damn thing if nobody wants to call it resort. Click through to read their answers, and to throw your own two cents in the comments section. First things first: This term "resort." Some designers bristle at its use because they say it's too loaded, conjuring images of rich people flitting off to exotic destinations. Instead, they call their collections "cruise," "holiday," "pre-spring," "pre-summer," "pre-collection," and other names that make no sense to anyone working outside fashion. This can't be a legit season until we all agree to call it the same thing. So, what should we call it? Does it make good financial sense for designers to produce resort collections? How did the resort season get its start, and when did the collections expand from dresses you'd wear on cruise-ship decks to a trans-seasonal plethora of boots, jackets, sundresses, swimwear, and everything else? Why do most of the resort shows take place in America, as opposed to London, Paris, and Milan? Europeans take way more vacations than we do. Is resort a decent (read: safe) time for designers to experiment? There was a rumor flying around that resort was so much more elaborate this year because Anna Wintour decreed — er, requested — it. True or false? Are there any downsides to the resort boom? Some resort attendees complained about the monthlong hodgepodge of shows and presentations, taking place all over town. Why isn't the season better organized? What were the fashion highlights of the season? Is resort finally on its way to becoming a real-deal season, equivalent in stature to spring and fall? Rag & bone co-designers David Neville and Marcus Wainwright have come a long way since they started working together in 2002, holing up in a denim factory in Kentucky and learning pattern-making and construction from scratch. This month, the pair won the Menswear Designer of the Year award for their impeccable blend of American workwear and English tailoring. "Having no fashion training, we've always approached the brand from a very different standpoint than anyone else," says Wainwright. "It's really based on beautiful clothes — how they're made, and what they're made of — rather than trying to be fashionable and trend-driven." Their scope continues to grow: Next month, the duo will launch their fourth Manhattan store in the former Café Colonial space. News: Fashion News | 22 Jun 2010 | 12:16 pm The Bachelorette Ups The Ante For Humiliating Reality Show DumpingsThere are no doubt a great many of you out there who, like me, are compulsive watchers of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. Well, last night, those of us who suffer through the program week after week were treated to one of the most deliciously humiliating rejections EVER captured on camera. But just in case you haven’t caught up on last night’s episode yet, we’ll keep all of the SPOILERS safe after the jump. Continue if you dare! (And you must, really!)
Phew, glad you made it! So, yeah, you remember Kasey, the guy who got an ominously weird tattoo on his forearm on last week’s episode, thinking it would help him to “guard and protect (Ali’s) heart.” (Clearly, Kasey didn’t watch the first season of Rock Of Love, or else he would’ve remembered the lesson that Heather learned about getting your body tattooed in hopes of winning a reality dating show). Well, SPOILER ALERT, it didn’t! In an outcome that even Mr. Magoo would’ve seen coming, Ali didn’t find the tattoo to be endearing or charming, she simply found it to be the act of a creepy stalker type. Hey Kasey, you do know that you were trying to win the heart of a wholesome (seeming) girl next door type, not Bombshell McGee, right? Anyhoo, because this revelation took place near the end of a 2-on-1 date with Rated R, Ali was forced to send Kasey home. But instead of just having him pack his bags and leave his hotel with a sliver of dignity intact, the evil genius producers of The Bachelorette staged the most elaborate dumping in the history of reality television. The date had taken place on a glacier in Iceland mere steps from an active volcano spewing out lava — a volcano that may or may not have been Eyjafjallajokull, mind you! — so, of course, it would make total sense for Ali and Rated R to jet off in a helicopter, leaving a heartbroken and mentally fragile Kasey stranded in subzero temperatures without any signs of any healthy Tauntauns in the vicinity. Classic! Guess we’ll have to wait until the reunion to see if a search party led by Björk managed to save Kasey or if he froze to death on the Arctic tundra. PS: Nice Burberry scarf, cheeseball! The IMDB lists sure ain’t perfect, but I’m glad to see users mobilizing and unselfconsciously praising a film they’ve just seen instead of having to be all “nothing new can ever be as great as old things!” about their opinions, and take some snotty AFI-list approach and exclaim how Toy Story 3 could never be as good as The General. Ditto Dark Knight at #11 — yay for acknowledging that things don’t have to age 20 years to be considered good! I’m peeing on Charlie Chaplin’s grave as I type this. Why, you ask? I ask you, WHY NOT? Oh, hundreds of reasons? Oops. Source: Best Week Ever | 22 Jun 2010 | 10:42 am You’re a Mean One, Danielle StaubIf you’re not watching Andy Cohen’s low-budget Real Housewives post-show Watch What Happens Live, then you really have no choice today but to Watch What Happened Late Last Night. Andy welcomed to his set Real Housewife of New Jersey Danielle Staub, whom I hesitate to insult lest she sends one of her goons to my home to, you know, kill me. Still, there are certain things that need to be said. For example, Danielle Staub is not so much human as she actually is a polystyrene Disney Haunted House animatron with a bear trap vagina and face catplant. There is not an ounce of this woman’s body, personality or soul that has a human heartbeat. And there was nothing quite as entertaining as watching Bravo Executive Andy grin-cringe (gringe?) his way through the most painful 22 minutes of fluff programming on television. No matter what was asked of Danielle, by caller or Andy himself, she insisted on responding in a totally defensive, awful, sarcastic, cocky way. In the thonged walnut that is her brain, she probably thought she was coming off as above it all. But in reality, she came off as one butcher’s knife shy of the next big thing in snuff films. Also, quick tip to a woman who looks like a Maury Povich shoe-in for a Grinch-Dad: Saying “Who?” over and over again is not helping your case. Not when your enemies actually live in Who-ville. Ahead, the premiere of Danielle’s song, “Real Close.” Oh, and a bonus!! As part of her revamped personality, Danielle is also now a singer and like 11 percent lesbian. She dueted on her song with Lori Michaels, a real life singer and lesbian, whom Danielle freely groped and stroked in the post-song interview. Here’s the song. Consensus seems to be that it’s “not that bad,” but I am on my knees, begging to differ: When asked if they were a couple, Danielle responded that she’s “not saying anything” while coyly stroking Lori’s hair. Lori, in the meantime, had no idea what the f-ck she had just signed up for, but was fairly sure “sexual relationship with cock-eyed space monster” was not in her rider. But through it all, let us remember who to feel sorry for here. People like Danielle Staub’s lovely daughters. People like her dogs, like the tiny dinosaurs in Jurassic Park who never asked to be brought into this world. People like Andy Cohen, who has to humanely deal with these people. People like her stable of goons, who would glady injure or worse in order to protect their friend… …on second thought… JK to everything. Bye.
