Rand Paul Knows 'What a Pile On Feels Like'

Kentucky Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul won't go so far as to endorse Republican congressman Joe Barton's position that forcing BP to create a $20 billion trust fund for victims of the BP oil spill is a "shameful... shakedown," a position that caused an immediate, oppositional reaction from the White House and even from fellow Republicans. But Paul does see where Barton's coming from:

"I don't want to pile on [Barton]. I know what that feels like. What I will say is I have never liked the tone of the president when he said things or his administration says things like he is going to put the boot on the throat of BP... If we put BP out of business, they can't pay for the cleanup."

What if it's just a little ass-kicking?

Baghdad’s Hottest Club Cost $2.5 Million to Build

The Lebanese Club on a slow night.

Political instability and regional violence have never been enough to stop nightlife in its tracks, and now enterprising club kids and restaurateurs are making a go of it in Iraq's capital: "A slew of new restaurants have opened in [Baghdad] this year," the Times reports. "All boast of having thick shatterproof glass." Antoine al-Hage, in particular, a sort of Middle Eastern Paul Sevigny, opened the Beatrice of Baghdad last month, a Lebanese restaurant-lounge, the Lebanese Club:

"The Lebanese Club is part Beirut, part Dubai, part Miami lounge circa 'Scarface,' without the cocaine. 'A classy place,' Mr. Hage says, and though there is a suggestion of maternal praise in his estimation, he is right that the club has no peer in Baghdad, in its scale, ambition or, most certainly, décor. Red, golds and browns accent the chrome, leather, glass and faux alligator skin on the columns ... Patrons gaze on a view of the Tigris that was once the preserve of the palaces for Saddam Hussein’s wife and brother-in-law. At night, Mr. Hage mingles among the clubgoers, ever the host."

Hage thinks there's money to be made in Iraqi nightlife now: "Simply put, for a decade, he has trailed America’s imperial pursuits. 'Wherever the Americans are, we are,' he said." The club cost $2.5 million to build, but investors expect to make that money back within the year.

Certain safety exceptions are not even made for high-profile guests:

"However loudly you protest, you still have to check your gun at the restaurant’s door. (Customers take valet tickets in return.)"

Mark Williams Steps Down As Chairman of the Tea Party Express

Sacramento-based conservative-radio talk-show host Mark Williams is stepping down as chairman of the Tea Party Express so that he can focus on fighting the construction of a mosque near the site of ground zero in New York. Williams has already argued that the mosque could be used for "the worship of the terrorists’ monkey-god." He has since sort of apologized for that remark, but he will now be devoting himself fully to opposing this cause. Well almost fully: He'll also be "leading a recall effort against some members of the Sacramento City Council and running for a spot on the local body himself after the council voted to boycott Arizona over its new immigration law." Williams told CNN he's "thinking globally and acting locally." Sounds like he's got his plate full of opposition! [Political Ticker/CNN, Atlantic]

Rob Pattinson is Still Tired of Talking about Twilight

In yet another profile of Rob Pattinson in which he wears his weariness so well, the actor bemoans the Twilight phenomenon:

"Mr. Pattinson was not particularly eager to chat for the quadrillionth time about Edward Cullen. 'It can get a little boring,' he said softly over coffee at the Four Seasons hotel, referring both to playing an unchanging vampire and to chewing over the Cultural Importance of It All. 'The good news is that the whole thing is done in seven months.'"

He's off by about a year, but Pattinson continues: "I’ve learned to let it go a bit, but I’m still really bothered by it ... The more you are exposed, the more people irrationally hate you."

The Times then wonders: will Pattinson's super-stardom lead him the way of Leonardo DiCaprio... or Christopher Atkins? (Remember him? No? Exactly.) In any case, with Eclipse out June 30th, Pattinson had better get used to talking about vampires.

Vatican Deems The Blues Brother a ‘Catholic Classic’

In the Vatican's official newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, the 1980 comedy starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, The Blues Brothers, has been declared "a Catholic classic" alongside The Ten Commandments and The Passion of the Christ. L'Osservatore editor Gian Maria Vian, who doubles as its film critic, apparently, cited the film's plot, in which two brothers battle "cops, neo-Nazis and crazed country fans in a bid to save the Catholic orphanage where they were raised," as his explanation. The Vatican's official reading of the film is that, "For [the Blues brothers] this Catholic institution is their only family. And they decide to save it at any cost." Aykroyd told the New York Post: "As a former altar boy from age 6 ... but a somewhat lapsed Catholic, I was delighted with the endorsement." Official Catholic ruling on Caddyshack II is still pending.

Not a Single Japanese Movie Theatre Has Screened The Cove

Owing to "online slanders, intimidating phone calls and veiled threats of violence" from Japan’s nationalist fringe, not a single movie theater in Japan has screened The Cove, Louie Psihoyos's popular 2009 documentary about dolphin-hunting in Japan. The film, which depicts dolphins being harpooned to death in a private lagoon in Taiji as a result of the aquarium trade and local meat market, also warns of dangerously high levels of mercury poisoning in fish. According to the Times:

"Three theaters canceled runs of the film in early June after [nationalist Shuhei] Nishimura’s group warned on its Web site that it would stage demonstrations outside two theaters in central Tokyo. Twenty-three others are still mulling whether to show the film. Not one is currently screening it."

Of course, there's always the Internet: "The service company Niwango plans a free streaming of the film on Friday, though for only 2,000 viewers." But the film's distributor is pushing for a theater run:

"I had a sense of mission,” said Takeshi Kato, president of the film’s distributor in Japan, Unplugged. “I knew from the moment I watched it that this issue was something the Japanese needed to see and think deeply about.”

Now there's fear that the film will never be officially screened in Japan, but the lengths to which some are going to make that happen should certainly pique more interest in it.

Motorcycle-Riding Republican Prepares to Let the Subpoenas Fly

No laughing matter.

If Republicans regain control of the House in midterm elections this fall, California Representative Darrell Issa is promising to "hire dozens of subpoena-wielding investigators" to make good on the accusations of corruption he's thrown at the Obama administration.

"'That will make all the difference in the world,' he told 400 applauding party members during a dinner at the chocolate-themed Hershey Lodge. 'I won’t use it to have corporate America live in fear that we’re going to subpoena everything. I will use it to get the very information that today the White House is either shredding or not producing.'"

Issa is seen as a "clownish figure" by Democrats and even a few Republicans, Politico reports, but "a clown with subpoena power is no laughing matter."

"Issa is temperamentally suited for the role. He doesn’t mind making enemies, he's in a very safe district and he craves publicity. With his slicked-back black hair, his BMW motorcycle and his net worth of more than $150 million, Issa fashions himself a rebel with a cause ... Issa wants to be to the Obama administration what Rep. Dan Burton was to the Clinton administration — a subpoena machine in search of White House scandals."

Burton, who once called Bill Clinton a "scumbag," seems happy to pass the torch: "I’ll take somebody like Darrell Issa to milquetoast any day."

Jason Stackhouse’s Abs: An Investigation

Doin' it for Bon Temps.

Last week, Deborah Ann Woll, who plays True Blood's fiery new vamp Jessica, admitted that Jim Parrack, who plays Hoyt Fortenberry, is her favorite man on the show, and now People has posed the same who's-the-hottest question to Carrie Preston, better known as True Blood's lovable waitress Arlene. "They are all gorgeous," she says diplomatically, but People pressed forward. "We all kind of marvel at Ryan's body," Preston admits, referring to Ryan Kwanten, who plays Anna Paquin's character's (generally) loyal, lovable brother Jason Stackhouse. "Because nobody is quite sure how he gets that body." How very interesting: In our recent interview with him, Kwanten left his abs a mystery, too: "Let’s stick to the acting ... I was hoping to change the subject enough to get away from that," he told us. Now we learn that even his co-stars don't know how he got those abs! Though there are some clues:

“Lately in Hollywood the bar is set so high for men,” says Preston. “At lunch I’ll hear the guys talking about how they’re staying away from carbs.”

A bit of Googling turns up a June 2009 Muscle & Body cover story in which the actor admits to late-night runs on the beach: "Even when I’m working, I’ll go home and run on the soft sand at two in the morning," he said. He also cops to being a yoga fiend and a regular hiker. So there's that.

In other True Blood news, perhaps one more man will be added to the mix, because Ben Linus is married to waitress Arlene!

Asked if her real life husband — Lost star Michael Emerson — will ever make a guest appearance on True Blood, Preston is hopeful. 'I know he’s a fan [of the show] and they are fans of his.'"

Did Maryann ever mention a long-lost cousin stuck on a mythological island somewhere ... ?

This time Gaga donned nothing but her black bra and panties covered by a Yankees jersey, and she danced kind of awkwardly/awesomely (see photo) in a suite above the third-base side. Maybe the Mets one-upped her by beating Gaga's team 4–0 right in front of her, proving that her ritualistic dancing couldn't secure a Yankees win, but who knows what comforting words Gaga had to offer A-Rod after the game, when they reportedly met briefly! Oh we'll see who's laughing last here, New York Mets.
