Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 19 Jun 2010 | 8:10 am Subhash K. Jha speaks on Raavan
A frail wounded bird snarled viciously in the dry branches of a tree. A cold-blooded vulture who looks leery-eyed and loopy-grinned at his prey.
Pray, is this world for real?! A film by Mani Ratnam is an experience of a lifetime. His politics might be a little wobbly at times. And those recurrent shots of old ladies and little girls dancing at colourful weddings have become annoying in their familiarity in Mani's world.
But by Jove, Mani knows how to tell a story! In Raavan he transports, no traps , us into a forest of strange untamed sights sounds emotions and feelings that tumble out with rapid-fire urgency creating a spiral of rich vibrant sensuous images. Not quite textured in their tumble these images linger like the aroma of redolent spices in a kitchen that's cooking up a storm of a meal.
Raavan is a feast for the senses. Not much more needs to be said about Mani's images. They flow out of Santosh Sivan and Manikandan's cameras with the desperate urgency a symphony written on the night before apocalypse.
Raavan with its elemental images located in the deepest recesses of the forests is apocalyptic in its movement and suggestions. The image of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan plunging from the heights into a waterfall and getting trapped in a dry tree remains the one visual that surpasses all other recent and remote celluloid wise en scene suggesting a link between Nature and vulnerability.
No actress but the divine Aishwarya could have played the beauteous and virtuous modern-day Sita who's kidnapped by a Maoist Raavan and taken through 14-day experience echoing Lord Rama's 14-year banwas.
The mythological references gets lost on some of the characters (notably Vikram as a khaki Rama creating quite a devastating drama) .And the background music and songs by A R Rahman (barring the haunting Behne de which comes much too soon in the narrative) leave no impression.
Aishwarya gets a firm grip on her pristine neo-Sita's ordeal by fire in the most trying of circumstances. At time her scale of emoting goes a little too high, as though she had forgotten this was the Hindi and not the Tamil version of the neo-mythological saga. But she's a perfect portrait of a trapped bird flapping her wings against the cage.
The superbly styled though at times overly accentuated and often rushed, screenplay is crammed with ironic references to mythology and history. Think Ramayan. Think Sita. Think... Hanuman! Govinda puts in a delightful cameo as a forest ranger up to his monkey trick as he transports Inspector Dev (Vikram) through the complicated forest terrain in search of his kidnapped wife.
A lot of the action and drama unfold in the region of the cryptic. We never come close to cracking the jungle creature Beera's mind. Partly a Moist, partly an outcast and an outlaw and outwardly a Robin Hood(don't miss images of rural kids frolicking with the Santa Claus of the jungles), Abhishek Bachchan plays the character with much relish trying to find a centre to a character the defies gravity. But the glint in the eye and that artless grin cannot be missed. They give the character away.
You know this seemingly ruthless guy will fall so hard in love with his mesmerizing hostage that it will destroy him
Yup, this Sita will be the death of Raavan. By the time the two develop a feral fatal attraction the narrative loses grip over the unlikely lovers. In the last half-hour Sita and Raavan are on their own.
How you wish Mani would have given the narrative ample breathing space for the Abhishek-Aishwarya relationship to grow naturally in the stunning non-judgemental forests. Tragically the feelings that they share never quite jump out of the screen to cloak and choke us. Mani's narrative style, a synthesis of smothered passions and half-finished emotions preclude any deeply thought-out plan for the modern-day Sita and Raavan.
So what lies beyond the forbidden passion between Hindu mythology's most enigmatic villain and most revered and pristine heroine? Parts of the narrative are uneven, not being able to create a coherent connection between the principal characters and the politics underlining the film's flamboyant mythological underbelly.
It's a heady ambitious venture about characters trapped in situations from which they cannot escape. Mani Ratnam's keeps the pace frantic and urgent. His actor have to create their own spaces in the tightly-packed drama of the doomed and the damned. The action and the drama are shot in an ensnaring rush of adrenaline. Abhishek and Vikram's pre-climactic hand-to-hand combat on a wooden bridge is pure hand-to-mouth stuff, no two ways about it.
The cinematography captures the rain-drenched characters and terrain in slippery splendour. Never have we seen the protagonists on screen rough it out so vigorously.
Abhishek and Aishwarya play beautifully against one another. When at the end he tells her, "If I had died how would I have met you?" you know his eyes are telling the truth.
Raavan is a film that constantly seeks out the dark recesses in its characters' heart which are then manifested in a montage of beautifully designed images. The film does fall short in some of its emotional moments. But who said that a film about such fatally flawed people had to be picture-perfect both outside and from inside?
The imperfections in the storytelling somehow add to the film's vital primeval quality. The forest is shot with a devastating passion. It becomes a place where the human heart can race against convention without the clock ticking away accusingly.
Aishwarya's heart-stopping beauty reverberates across the natural sights and sounds in the jungles. Abhishek uses his voice, physicality eyes and smile to create a twisted troubled world of inescapable doom for his character.Govinda, Ravi Kissan and Nikhil Diwedi also put in credible performances that seem to grasp the workings of Mani Ratnam's primeval world in all its uplifting glory.
But Vikram as the modern-day Rama is a near-disaster.
He is apparently a superstar in the South. And there he shall remain.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 19 Jun 2010 | 7:14 am Kareena to skip Karisma's birthday due to Agent Vinod Frantic efforts are on to accommodate Karisma Kapoor's birthday into her sister Kareena's choc-a-clock schedule. But it seems unlikely that the busy actress would be able to join her Didi for her birthday on June 25.
Ironically, it is Saif who seems more concerned about missing Karisma's birthday.
Says a source, "Saif gets along like a house on fire with Karisma and her husband Sanjay. The two guys often share a lot of outdoor fun activities together. Saif doesn't want that he and Kareena should miss her sister's birthday this year."
Saif's concern and guilt for the sisters not being together on that very special day is heightened by the fact that Kareena would be shooting for his film Agent Vinod in Morocco on Karisma's birthday.
Kareena rules out that possibility of Karisma flying down to Morocco "How can my sister fly down to Morocco? No, she'll be in Mumbai with her baby. She has just had a baby boy who's not even four months old. She can't leave the city."
Interestingly, Kareena seems to handle her absence from this important day in her sister with much pragmatism and common sense. "How can I be in Mumbai? I'll be shooting in Tangiers in Morocco on my sister's birthday. Work always comes first in our family. So there would be no birthday plans with my sister this year."
The over-worked sister says she won't even have time to buy anything for Karisma this year. "There's no time to breathe. Forget buying anything. I don't know whether I'm coming or going," sighs Kareena.
Kareena has never missed any of her sister's birthdays. In recent years Kareena had quite often gone to join Karisma in Delhi when the elder sister was staying in the Capital with her husband.
This time Kareena is trying to focus on Saif's project rather than on Karisma's birthday. "I looooove the title Agent Vinod. It's the coolest. We've already started shooting for it. We leave for Tangiers in Morocco on June 22 for twenty days."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 19 Jun 2010 | 6:46 am Karan Johar's Stepmom remake titled as We Are Family

5 years after his last directorial venture Zinda, Sanjay Gupta is all set for his next directorial venture which is the remake of the Spanish film Ladron Que Roba A Ladron.
Sanjay, who has this time around, officially acquired the rights of this film from the makers Lions Gate Films, is least perturbed by the fact that another top director Abbas-Mustan is also planning to make the same film.
Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, Sanjay says, "I am certainly going ahead with the remake of Ladron Que Roba A Ladron. We are planning to shoot the film in London and for the same I am even planning to acquire an office there. The film will star 4 heroes and 2 heroines and most of my cast is more or less locked. We will be making an announcement shortly on the same. Besides the film will also have a lot of foreign crew members."
Ask him whether he has been facing any kind of pressure to part with the rights of the film and Sanjay says, "Yes I have been getting a lot of calls asking me to part with the rights but I guess its all too late in the day now. A lot of spadework has already been done now and so you can say things are in quite an advanced stage right now as far as White Feather Films is concerned."
On being asked how did he decide on remaking this particular film, Gupta says, "I happened to receive a lot of fan mails asking me to remake this particular film. I then watched the film myself and really enjoyed it and thought that it was indeed a very good, commercial film. Ladron Que Roba A Ladron is a highly cool and entertaining action comedy film, so its but obvious that there are a lot of people who want to remake the film in Hindi. However, luckily for me, I got in touch with the original producers a long time back and acquired the official remake rights."

After playing the giddy headed starry-eyed young lover-girl in all her films so far including the about-to-be-released I Hate LUV Storys, Sonam Kapoor in Mausam is all set to play a girl who evolves into a woman in the course of the film.
Her clothes which are always a source of powerful on-screen personality-transference for her has been worked on at great lengths by designer Anamika Khanna. And the result, says a member of the crew, is no less than devastating.
Apparently, Sonam was initially reluctant to get into the mature mould. "She had reservations about being bracketed in the mature mould so early in her career. In all her films so far from Saawariya to Thank You, Sonam has played a girl her own age and dressed accordingly, in what she's comfortable with. The Western clothes that 'd transform her into a chic Delhi socialite in Aisha are as much a part of her personality as the salwar-kameez that she wore in Delhi 6."
Apparently, designer Anamika Khanna who has worked earlier with Sonam in Delhi 6 has been pouring over the designs with Sonam trying to figure out what clothes she's most comfortable in.
Shahid, who needed to make a sartorial changeover to play the mature mellow lover in the later part of the film, has also been heard joking about how Mausam has turned him and Sonam into overnight adult stars.
Says the Mausam producer Sheetal Talwar, "Shahid has sported the mature mellow look in Jab We Met. But for Sonam the transformation from girl to woman in Mausam is a challenge. Emraan Hashmi has always been known as the 'Serial-Kisser' of Bollywood. However this latest issue of People magazine portrays the talented actor in a completely different light.
Emraan is seen on the cover page of People magazine holding on to his bundle of joy- his 4 month old son Ayaan. In an exclusive interview, Emraan talks about how he is enjoying the joys of parenthood. The actor says his wife Parveen has helped ease him into his new role as a father. Says Emraan, "When I'm with Ayaan, she instructs me, 'Don't lift him like that' or 'This is not how you diaper him'." Nevertheless the actor says that Parveen does rate him 8 on 10 in the daddy department.
Like a responsible dad, Emraan says that he has no intention of letting Ayaan watch any of his movies till he's 18. However, once he is of that age, the actor wants to show him some of his best works like Murder, Gangster and Jannat.
Must say, fatherhood has surely changed Emraan for the better.
On 17th June 2010, Competition Commission of India (CCI) has passed a judgment in favour of Reliance BIG Pictures restraining Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce from taking any action direct or indirect to prevent any exhibitor from exhibiting the film Raavan and Raavanan in the state of Karnataka if exhibitors are willing and desirous to exhibit these films.
As on 18th June 2010, Raavan and Raavanan would be playing in 24 theatres in Mysore circuit, in all multiplexes and in multiple screens in these multiplexes.
From Pallavi Anu Pallavi in Kannada in 1983 to Raavan in Hindi in 2010. It has indeed been very long and fruitful journey for Mani Ratnam. Most cineastes regard him as one of the most significant voices of commercial Indian cinema. Straddling the world of high aesthetics, mass orientation and some say, simplistic politics, Mani has created a spiral of work whose impact resonates across the face of Indian cinema no matter what the spoken language of his characters...Kannada, Tamil or Hindi. Remarkably soft-spoken and possessing a wicked sense of humour Mani Ratnam who turned 54 on June 2, speaks to Subhash K Jha
It's been a long tough journey for you would you say, Raavan was your hardest film to make?
Ah let me think, yes, you could be right, but that is the exact way I felt about the last film and the one before that. When I did my first film I said to myself just in a film or two you will know enough about filming and then it would be a piece of cake. And I believed it. But No. it is still as tough. Gets worse by the film.
The rugged jungles and the severe climate...how integral were they to the plot? Could the hardships faced by the cast and crew have been diminished if you had shot in less severe locations?
As a story teller, you try to use every tool at your disposal to tell the story better, to stage the scenes effectively. The terrain and the climate is a very huge tool. They are the stage on which the drama is mounted. They help you to transport the viewer close to the character, to the action. And gives the actor a pre-set stage on which he or she can perform. So the location and the climate is not a hindrance, we seek it. We planned Raavan in the monsoons, so that we could benefit from the helping hands of nature.
Considering the difficulties you faced in making Raavan would you say shooting a film in a studio is far more manageable, if less authentic?
When I watch a film, I have never been bothered about how difficult it must have been for the maker to put it together. That is the problem of the director. As a viewer we just see if the film connects. Finally that is the only thing counts. And makes the distributor count. So when you make the movie - where you do, does not matter, as long as you are able to make the connection. Where you shoot is your personal call.
Raavan was done in two languages simultaneously. Did that mean double the toil?
Yes, I am afraid. What we got right in the first place, we had to battle all over again to get it right again, and if that by chance became better, we had to remake the first one again. When we made mistakes we made them twice. We will never forget the mistakes we made in this shoot because we already paid for it. To be honest it was a bit more than double toil. More like 2.5.
Please describe some of the most memorable and frightening experiences of shooting Raavan.
Memorable moments⦠the entire struggle each day, the torture that I put the entire crew into. If I was going to battle why make the rest comfortable? Let them share a bit of my anxiety. The frightening ones are answering your unending questions. How do you keep on grilling, Subhash?
What next? Are you doing another Hindi film, this time with Ranbir Kapoor?
What next? Honestly don't know. At the beginning of Raavan I thought I would retire after this film and settle in Kodaikanal and play golf everyday. At the end of the film I am ready to start my next one soon. So let's see. I should become very good in either golf or filmmaking. Can't struggle with both. Even as Balki puts finishing touches to the script for his third film featuring the Big B in the lead, the twosome who gave us the two extremely unconventional hits Cheeni Kum and Paa will now be getting together for a 15-minute film celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema.
While details for the project are yet to be finalized, it is understood that PVR Cinemas has commissioned 8 leading filmmakers to make 15-minute films which would all be released as one feature film in 2013 when Indian cinema celebrates a 100 years of existence.
The first director to start his film would be Balki.
Says the director, "Doing a short film with Amitji would be a special challenge for me because I've never done a film in that format before, and neither has he. We've done numerous ads and two feature films together. Now let's see what I can do with Amitji in the 15 minutes that we'll be provided."
Balki says another film with the Big B, no matter what its duration was imperative. "I was beginning to get withdrawal symptoms. That man is addictive. Once you work with him, there's no way you can resist working with him over and over again."
While the challenge of creating a 15-minute full and comprehensive film replete with a plot and a background score will be taken up by Balki in the pre-winter months, at the end of the year, he'll start his third feature film with Mr. Bachchan. Apparently, it would be the Big B's most intensely romantic film since Yash Chopra's Kabhi Kabhie in 1975.
