The London INDIAN Film Festival launches begins on July 15

The London INDIAN Film Festival launches begins on July 15 By devansh patel The London Indian Film Festival launches from July 15- 20 in London with a range of cutting-edge movies from some of India's hottest independent talents, we aren't talking Bollywood here, but films that challenge, make you think and show a more realistic view of India today in all its colour and diversity. The Festival's selection of films are screened across London, opening in the city centre at Cineworld (Haymarket), then Barbican, Nehru Centre, Watermans and Genesis cinemas. The Festival covers a wide range of themes from family dramas, coming-of age tales to twisted urban romance. What pervades many of these movies is a new more assured Indian cool, experimenting with cinematic styles, new technology and influenced by themes both East and West, which has helped them win favour with the young in-crowd in super cities like Mumbai. The London Indian Film Festival opens at Cineworld (Haymarket) on July 15 with the UK premiere of the challenging Love, Sex Aur Dhokha, (Love, Sex and Betrayal) , by director, Dibakar Banerjee. Through three intertwined tales, this controversial film explores sexuality, voyeurism, love and betrayal in modern India. The film has un-known actors, but it's radical revision -challenging the romantic Indian fairy-tale romance was a big box office hit when it was released in India in March. Of course being an Opening Night expect some VIPs to turn up! Other highlights in this festival include the high-impact City of Gold, by the maverick director, Mahesh Manjrekar, on the forgotten history of mill workers of Mumbai, whose livelihoods were crushed when the mills were converted into the glitzy shopping malls and five star hotels. Meanwhile, Last Chance Mumbai is a sophisticated multi-strand ensemble exploring the connective lives of the city's inhabitants over a 24 hour period by acclaimed director, Saeed Akhtar Mirza. Road To Sangam directed by Amit Rai, explores ideas of Nation India and sometimes conflicting religious identity. It tells the story of one Muslim man's desire to help take Mahatma Gandhi's remaining ashes to the holy river and explores how many Muslims in India seem themselves 60 years after independence. The closing movie is the UK premiere Vihir (The Well) by award winning director Umesh Kulkarni (world premiered at Berlin), which is stunningly filmed amongst the grandeur of the rolling Indian plains of two adolescent friends who inspire each other's journey to manhood. London INDIAN film Festival partners from across the industry are supporting the Festival. The Satyajit Foundation's Ray Short Film Competition has joined the Festival with the winning filmmaker receiving a £1,000 Award on 20 July at Cineworld, Haymarket. "With AB I could do films because we tackle different characters" - Mani Ratnam

Mani Ratnam From Pallavi Anu Pallavi in Kannada in 1983 to Raavan in Hindi in 2010. It has indeed been very long and fruitful journey for Mani Ratnam. Most cineastes regard him as one of the most significant voices of commercial Indian cinema. Straddling the world of high aesthetics, mass orientation and some say, simplistic politics, Mani has created a spiral of work whose impact resonates across the face of Indian cinema no matter what the spoken language of his characters...Kannada, Tamil or Hindi. Remarkably soft-spoken and possessing a wicked sense of humour Mani Ratnam who turned 54 on June 2, speaks to Subhash K Jha It's been a long tough journey for you would you say, Raavan was your hardest film to make? Ah let me think, yes, you could be right, but that is the exact way I felt about the last film and the one before that. When I did my first film I said to myself just in a film or two you will know enough about filming and then it would be a piece of cake. And I believed it. But No. it is still as tough. Gets worse by the film. The rugged jungles and the severe climate...how integral were they to the plot? Could the hardships faced by the cast and crew have been diminished if you had shot in less severe locations? As a story teller, you try to use every tool at your disposal to tell the story better, to stage the scenes effectively. The terrain and the climate is a very huge tool. They are the stage on which the drama is mounted. They help you to transport the viewer close to the character, to the action. And gives the actor a pre-set stage on which he or she can perform. So the location and the climate is not a hindrance, we seek it. We planned Raavan in the monsoons, so that we could benefit from the helping hands of nature. We planned Raavan in the monsoons, so that we could benefit from the helping hands of nature A film by Mani Ratnam is considered a cinematic event. How would regard your journey from your early Tamil films to Dil Se in Hindi, Yuva and now Raavan? Tough hard journey. The terrain we shoot in are nothing compared to this path. It just doesn't get easy. The struggle has increased because you don't have excuses to fall back on. You can't claim it is first film and therefore errors and omissions are expected. You can't hide behind your own cliches that you have exhausted by now. And world cinema is growing at such a clip that you've got to keep changing to stay within the reasonable distance. It is not so much the film or the logistics but your own creativity you battle against. You suddenly suffered a health scare during the shooting. How did that experience change your perception of art and life? Ha! The scares are just reminders to stay fit and healthy. Once this ten- headed Raavan is out of my system I shall be back on course and fitness. To answer the second part of you question...How does it affect art and life? Well it is romantic idea to think that when you go into an ICU and come out come out with a changed perspective on everything. Not true. Though what it did for me with this film was made me get Raavan meaner and fitter. What I did not do to myself I did to my script. Cut the flab and got it leaner. Mani Ratnam Considering the difficulties you faced in making Raavan would you say shooting a film in a studio is far more manageable, if less authentic? When I watch a film, I have never been bothered about how difficult it must have been for the maker to put it together. That is the problem of the director. As a viewer we just see if the film connects. Finally that is the only thing counts. And makes the distributor count. So when you make the movie - where you do, does not matter, as long as you are able to make the connection. Where you shoot is your personal call. Raavan was done in two languages simultaneously. Did that mean double the toil? Yes, I am afraid. What we got right in the first place, we had to battle all over again to get it right again, and if that by chance became better, we had to remake the first one again. When we made mistakes we made them twice. We will never forget the mistakes we made in this shoot because we already paid for it. To be honest it was a bit more than double toil. More like 2.5. We will never forget the mistakes we made in this shoot because we already paid for it Earlier people spoke about your comfortable equation with Madhavan. Now do you share a similar comfort level with Abhishek Bachchan? Comfort is a bad word during shooting. If you become comfortable you tend to become complacent. The struggle phase is much better, because then, there is this stress and effort to reach for more. With AB, I could do a few films only because we were tackling very different characters each time. Lalan was a far cry from Gurukanth and Beera now is way away from Gurukanth Desai. Which means the actor and I are back to square one. Which is - not having a clue as to how to bring Beera alive on screen. Square one is a good place at the start of the shoot. With AB, I could do a few films only because we were tackling very different characters each time And Aishwarya? She did her first film Irruvar with you? Now Raavan. How far has she emerged as an actress? Ash was good right from Irruvar. She was doing in a language she did not know, was doing two different characters and she was doing a film that was being shot in lengthy - and slightly complicated style. It did not have any comfort of a launch film. She was pushed into the water. Like we have done with her several times in Raavan. And she had to shout in Tamil for help. Ash just swam. In Raavan, Ragini is the key. She is one who drives the film. She is the one who treads the path that is unwritten. Beera (Abhishek) and Dev (Vikram) are roles that are set - and the actors stand tall in them. Ash had to make Ragini her own. She had to find a Pitch, a Sur that would make you connect with her and the film. She really carries the audience perspective in the story telling. Mani Ratnam Please describe some of the most memorable and frightening experiences of shooting Raavan. Memorable moments… the entire struggle each day, the torture that I put the entire crew into. If I was going to battle why make the rest comfortable? Let them share a bit of my anxiety. The frightening ones are answering your unending questions. How do you keep on grilling, Subhash? What next? Are you doing another Hindi film, this time with Ranbir Kapoor? What next? Honestly don't know. At the beginning of Raavan I thought I would retire after this film and settle in Kodaikanal and play golf everyday. At the end of the film I am ready to start my next one soon. So let's see. I should become very good in either golf or filmmaking. Can't struggle with both. That's for sure.

Bachchan-Balki get together to make 15-minute short-film on Indian cinema

Big B, R. Balki Even as Balki puts finishing touches to the script for his third film featuring the Big B in the lead, the twosome who gave us the two extremely unconventional hits Cheeni Kum and Paa will now be getting together for a 15-minute film celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema. While details for the project are yet to be finalized, it is understood that PVR Cinemas has commissioned 8 leading filmmakers to make 15-minute films which would all be released as one feature film in 2013 when Indian cinema celebrates a 100 years of existence. The first director to start his film would be Balki. Says the director, "Doing a short film with Amitji would be a special challenge for me because I've never done a film in that format before, and neither has he. We've done numerous ads and two feature films together. Now let's see what I can do with Amitji in the 15 minutes that we'll be provided." Balki says another film with the Big B, no matter what its duration was imperative. "I was beginning to get withdrawal symptoms. That man is addictive. Once you work with him, there's no way you can resist working with him over and over again." While the challenge of creating a 15-minute full and comprehensive film replete with a plot and a background score will be taken up by Balki in the pre-winter months, at the end of the year, he'll start his third feature film with Mr. Bachchan. Apparently, it would be the Big B's most intensely romantic film since Yash Chopra's Kabhi Kabhie in 1975. And no, this time there would be no Abhishek Bachchan.

Abhishek- Aishwarya make it for Kirron Kher's birthday party at 2 am

Aishwarya, Abhishek It was an exhilarating Wednesday- night for Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Their new film together was premiered at the British Film Institute. The first Indian film to get the honour. The Bachchan and the Rai parents were present watching the film for the first time. Said Aishwarya after the screening, "Just seeing their faces after the show, Abhishek and I knew we could sleep in peace tonight." From Monday morning till Tuesday, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan went sleepless for more than 24 hours. Late on Monday night-Tuesday morning she attended family-friend Kirron Kher's birthday party, and then headed for the airport to catch her flight to London for the premiere of Raavan. When Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan walked in hand-in-hand at 2 in the morning to wish Kirron Kher a happy birthday on Monday night, everyone presumed they were sauntering in refreshed and rejuvenated. Fact is, they headed straight for the Khers from a series of media events in Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai because there was no way they'd miss Kirron's birthday. While Anupam Kher prefers to keep his distance, Kirron who turned 55 on Monday is very close to the entire Bachchan parivar. Her son Sikandar is known to hang out with Abhishek who calls the youngster his younger brother. Given a choice Kirron wouldn't want any of the Bachchans to miss her birthday. This year the senior Bachchans are in Europe while Abhishek and Aishwarya are busy promoting Raavan and had made it clear that showing up for her birthday party was a near-impossiblity. Says a source close to the couple, "Way past midnight the events and engagements for Raavan were still not over. But the couple decided that not dropping in for their Kirron Aunty's birthday especially when the senior Bachchans are away, would have been improper and hurtful." After the party the couple went to meet the Raavan crew which was at a special screening of the film. Says a family friend, "Aishwarya is very careful about family duties. More so when Abhishek's parents are out of town. She knew she and her husband were representing the Bachchans at Kirron's party. She couldn't miss it, although she was without food, rest or even a dress-change the whole day." Known to stretch the schedules beyond human endurance, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan set a new record for herself over the past weekend in time management when she flew into Delhi on Sunday afternoon to join Abhishek media events, flew out of Delhi at 5 am solo on Monday morning to Hyderabad to join Vikram for media events for the Telugu version of Raavan, and flew back in the evening for more media interactions and Kirron Kher's birthday. Just before she left for London, Aishwarya said, "It's been a really really hectic time for both me and Abhishek. We've been running around trying to develop a new technology for time management. Sadly we don't get time to spend together. That's why this trip to London is precious. Because the entire family will be together for our film. That's what I call bliss."

Reliance BIG & Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment to produce The Imperfectionists

Brad Pitt's production company Plan B Entertainment, under its Creative Partnership with Reliance BIG Entertainment, have acquired the screen rights to Tom Rachman's novel, The Imperfectionists, which was published this spring by Dial Press. The Imperfectionists centres on the quirky, maddening, endearing people who write and read an international newspaper based in Rome: from the obituary reporter who will do anything to avoid work, to the young freelancer who is manipulated by an egocentric war correspondent, to the dog-obsessed publisher who seems less interested in his struggling newspaper than in his magnificent basset hound. Rachman drew from his experience as a former wire service reporter at the Associated Press (AP) office in Rome to set the stage for The Imperfectionists. Reliance BIG Entertainment, the flagship media and entertainment arm of Indian conglomerate, Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (R-ADAG), first introduced its innovative development/ production financing deal, termed a Creative Partnership, with Plan B Entertainment at the Cannes Film Festival 2008. Commenting on the acquisition, Reliance BIG Entertainment's Chairman Amit Khanna said, "The Imperfectionists is a compliment to our slate with Plan B Entertainment. It will make a commercial and extremely relevant film which will play well to an international audience." This is one of several projects acquired by Plan B under their creative partnership with Reliance. Last year the company announced Dark Void, which is based on Capcom's acclaimed video game and being developed as a sci-fi action franchise and potential starring vehicle for Pitt.

Koena's sultry self on cover of The Man

All you Koena fans need to grab this month's issue of The Man magazine as the lady herself reveals that under the hotness lies just another girl. So does she wish for a macho prince to rescue her as well? To which Koena says, "I do not go for a very macho body with a mature face; that's not my ideal at all. Javed Akhtar to pen down special poem for Katrina's character in Zoya's film

A poem of couplets written by a fan in celebration of Katrina Kaif's beauty and virtues that has surfaced on numerous websites and blogs, has inspired an entire song devoted to Katrina in Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Says a source close to the project, "Katrina plays a free- spirited girl, a wanderer at heart and a bohemian gypsy by nature whom the three male leads Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol are quite seriously fascinated by. She inspires the boys into chasing their dreams and not being afraid of reaching into the darkness to find light." And that's precisely the character that the film's director Zoya Akhtar's father, the sensitive poet Javed Akhtar, will have to describe in his lyrics for a song devoted to Katrina's character. Says the source, "There was only a vague idea for such a song in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. But when the poem by Katrina's fan surfaced on the net, everyone felt the lyrics describing Katrina's character beauty and zest for life was needed." Katrina neck-deep in shooting with Hrithik, Farhan and Abhay in Spain is flattered by all the attention she's getting online and in person. "I can't think of anything but how to get into character. This role requires a lot of physical preparation. I had almost no time to prepare for Zoya's film. I delayed my departure from Mumbai till the very last minute because I wanted to enjoy the attention that Raajneeti was getting. I get attached to a film and need a transitional period between one project and another. I didn't get that space before coming to Spain." The pleasure comes with a price. Katrina's preparation for her zany character in Zoya's film is half-complete. She needs to master many outdoor sports. Most of them are new to her. But she is learning on the job in Spain. "I landed here in the night and started shooting next morning completely unprepared. But now I'm getting a hang of it." About the ode by her fan, she says, "It's flattering to have people write such wonderful lines for you. I can't pretend to be unaffected by all the attention I'm getting. At the same time I can't let it go to my head. There's so much more to be done."
