"MNIK has transcended across boundaries" - Karan Johar

Karan Johar Karan Johar is happy. In line with the strategy that Karan and FOX had for the staggered release of My Name Is Khan across the globe, the Shah Rukh Khan starrer has over the last few weeks seen a global release across USA, Germany as well as France. Not just did the film invite attention from the discerning audience, it also saw favourable reviews coming its way from reputed international critics, something which was a reason for joy for Karan Johar. "That's right; the film was reviewed very well in all New York papers. We opened in a very limited engagement at Angelica Film Centre where only prestigious art house cinema from across the globe is screened. It was a matter of pride for us to see people so much interested in our film", says Karan Johar who traveled globally with his film. "The film has indeed transcended across boundaries", continues Karan, "It has released in Germany as well as France now. In the weeks to come, we would also be releasing in Russia as well as many other territories. People at FOX are planning it all out. MNIK has truly emerged as the first global film to be coming out of India and doing well commercially as well." One wonders though, if the theatrical release of My Name Is Khan across the globe would actually see much moolah coming the films away. After all the DVDs of the film are already out, so how many can be expected to pay for a theatre ticket. "But the DVDs have been released only in India. Globally, we are yet to come out with home video", clarifies Karan. Meanwhile, there has been so much said and written about the eventual box office fate of MNIK in India. While speculations are being made from all quarters, does he wish to confirm how exactly has it fared eventually? "Well, in India MNIK has been a huge hit. In overseas, it is the biggest ever hit. See, MNIK is a very different film. It is not your quintessential entertainer. It doesn't have comedy and popular music which is staple diet for Bollywood followers. Still, it netted 75 crores just in India. Even in overseas, it has been the number one grosser ever. If we talk about the cumulative business between Indian and overseas, it is amongst the Top 3 Bollywood films ever", Karan states some hard facts before signing off.

"I had to justify my National Award" - Arjun

Arjun Rampal Celebrations are continuing for Arjun Rampal and congratulatory calls are pouring in as well. It has been a week since the release of Raajneeti but the quantum of all the appreciation has only seen an escalation with every passing day. With the weekdays holding on quite well after a phenomenal first weekend, Raajneeti is now sitting pretty amongst the biggest box office openers of all times - 3 Idiots and Ghajini. While both films were designed as commercial entertainers, Raajneeti was perceived as a dry drama due to it's background of politics. However, it has pushed many an entertainer aside and emerged as a supreme winner, something which is expected to march on for many more weeks to come. Arjun Rampal shares his moment of joy with Joginder Tuteja. The kind of start and sustained audience that Raajneeti has been enjoying for more than a week seems pretty unbelievable, especially with the kind of genre it presents. What does it say for the Indian film industry? I think it really reflects for everybody that you make a good film and people would certainly want to watch it despite the genre or the background. For all of us, that should be the key. We continue to talk about the kind of audience which wants to see a particular film. However, we should step back, pause and rethink on what actually makes for a film which is good enough that would connect with the audience. And what really do you feel is the pre-requisite for such films? Honesty. When you bring in honesty in your filmmaking, audience will see that from a distance. This is the reason why I am so sure that the film will sustain for many more weeks even after such a blockbuster opening. I am sure that the film will sustain for many more weeks even after such a blockbuster opening. Well, you must indeed be ecstatic. You had one filmmaker (Sajid Khan) promising you a huge money spinner (Housefull) and another (Prakash Jha) delivering a blockbuster (Raajneeti) without stating much. (Smiles) Housefull is something that I am very proud of. It did extremely well and connected with the audience. It is now time for Raajneeti. I couldn't have been happier because even as Raajneeti is doing so well, Housefull too is running in theatres. I couldn't have been happier because even as Raajneeti is doing so well, Housefull too is running in theatres. Rock On, The Last Lear, Housefull and now Raajneeti - suddenly Arjun has become very critic friendly. Really, you are now consistently seeing good reviews coming your way from all quarters. Isn't it actually turning out to be a trend of sorts? Well, this is the trend that I won't like to break (laughs). I have grown over a period of time and as an actor, that should be a basic trait. When I started off, it was a time when cinema was changing. Films were being made that belonged to different kinds. Over a period of time, it turned out to be a learning experience for me as an actor. Once I gained this experience, I had to do something entirely new, which I did in last few years. I had to unlearn a lot of things. I have grown over a period of time and as an actor, that should be a basic trait. And what is it that you learnt? That your journey will always continue, courtesy the changes that will keep coming in. You can't help it though what you should know at the bare minimum is 'how to act'. Also, once your film succeeds, you get an added encouragement to further learn. I am grateful that during last few years, I have seen continued success. That only makes my thought process clearer around what I want to do and what's the kind of work I should say yes to. Arjun Rampal Well, one can guess so. After all not many have dared to enter a venture that had seasoned actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Nana Patekar and Ajay Devgn. Wasn't it unnerving for you to begin with? (Says immediately) It was not unnerving at all. It was due to the presence of these actors that Ranbir, Katrina and myself got noticed. You get a lot of learning when you have performers like these alongside you. You read scenes and rehearse a lot which keeps you on your toes. You know there and then that you are not there to compete but to work together so as to make a film work. No wonder, it is so flattering when you perform for a scene and get a lot of praise from these people. One can see that. After all it is you, Ranbir and Manoj who are getting appreciated the most. See, it is all about the movie working in entirety. For me, the hero of Raajneeti is the film itself and Prakash Jha. We all went with his instincts and did what he wanted us to do. Full credit to the entire team that my performance is being loved and liked. I had to perform. After all there were so many national awards out there and I too had to justify my National award (laughs).

Imran suggested changes to make IHLS 'tighter'

Over the decades, one has heard of scripts being changed mid way into the making of the film. Many of them have failed once the changes started taking place haphazardly. On the other hand quite a few succeeded when better creativity prevailed. While this is something which is not quite acknowledged by all, it's a known fact that a bound script doesn't always stay to be on to bound the same way before arriving on the sets. Anything wrong with that? No, none at all as long as a script change happens before everything is locked (including cast, dates, locations, final deadline for the shoot, release date etc.). All is well as long as the change happens for the better. Yes, it may involve some heartburn for a writer because his vision may find some tangents from others (read: producer, director, actor) involved. However, as is the case with any creative journey, filmmaking too follows it's soon; something that debutant filmmaker Punit Malhotra realised in case of I Hate Luv Storys. Says Imran who admits that he wasn't sold with the entire idea of I Hate LUV Storys in the very first listening, "I had a lot of issues with the script and I gave Punit a long laundry list. I told him, yeh problem hai, yahan isko aise theek karna hai, is cheez ko thoda badlo etc. etc." "I actually 'pakaoed' him for a long time", he adds with a laugh. This is where Punit had to go back to the drawing board as Imran wanted to be doubly sure about picking up a new assignment. Fresh out of the debacle of Kidnap and Luck, he knew that there would be tremendous expectations from him for his next release. Also, since I Hate LUV Storys would have been his only rom-com after Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Naa, his debut film which had proved to be a blockbuster at the box office, Imran had to ensure that it provided at least as much fun and entertainment as the Abbas Tyrewala's film, if not more. In addition, the shooting had not yet started which means there was much more flexibility and time available to bring a change in the written word. Result was a far better script which found an instant liking from Imran. "This time around, the script was much tighter. The overall duration of the film too was just about two hours. The screenplay was literally flying and everything worked out to be just perfect. Once that happened, there were no hassles or worries because shooting was the easiest part. Also, this is where Karan as an enterprising producer came into picture because of his years of experience and standing in the industry. He got the best technicians, composers, designers, DOP etc. Things just fell into place", details Imran. Well, come 2nd July and we would know!

Raajneeti success to benefit Ranbir's next?

What does a hit film do to you? Well, it ends up benefiting not just everyone associated with that film but also the next one which is in the pipeline. A certain Ranbir Kapoor will certainly vouch for that as the blockbuster success of Raajneeti has ensured that his very next release, Anjaana Anjaani (with Priyanka Chopra), hugely benefits from it. Reasons are aplenty: a) Raajneeti has made a statement loud and clear that Ranbir isn't made just for candyfloss cinema. He has the range and if Wake Up Sid and Rocket Singh - Salesman of the Year were the starting points, Raajneeti has been a definite milestone in his career as far as working in offbeat cinema (if looked at from the perspective of what is expected from a young actor of his age) is concerned. b) The entire balancing act is certainly going in his favour. Just after Wake Up Sid, Ranbir Kapoor returned with a major money spinner in the form of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. While it was always meant to be a so called 'safe film' (in Bollywood parlance), the fact remains that it was Ranbir's charm (amongst some genuine comic moments, super hit music and Katrina Kaif's continued luck) which helped it enjoy a long run at the box office. c) With good critical acclaim as well as commercial success coming his way, Ranbir is pretty much being looked at as a package deal, something which has been nurtured to the fullest in Raajneeti. While his restrained performance has made everyone sit up and take notice of his inherent talent, the roaring box office success has proved that audience are willing to accept him even in those roles where he is not just a chocolate hero. These are the factors that make Anjaana Anjaani an interesting case study on what to expect from Ranbir. He got an initial jolt after Saawariya, only to get a shot in the arm courtesy Bachna Ae Haseeno which had turned out to be a decent success. With Siddharth Anand as the filmmaker who gave Ranbir his first success, Anjaana Anjaani could well be life coming full circle for the director-actor 'jodi'. Add to that the fact that the film comes from the house of Nadiadwala Grandsons which has been known for its successful record over the years and it can be confidently said that the hit run of Ranbir Kapoor is pretty much safeguarded. Says a veteran industry follower, "The going couldn't have been better for Ranbir as he seems to have planned it all quite well. Soon after a rather serious Raajneeti, he is looking at a young entertainer like Anjaana Anjaani. Sajid Nadiadwala is known for making big films which are family entertainers and feelers within the industry are already quite positive about Anjaana Anjaani. Then there are films with directors like Imtiaz Ali (Rockstar) and Anurag Basu (Silence). Though it is a common saying that one can't plan things to perfection, especially in the unpredictable world of Bollywood, this is pretty much the case if one looks at the way Ranbir has gone about picking and choosing his projects."

Aishwarya pays surprise visit to Abhishek

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Normally, the Bachchans have a very rigid rule about not mixing business with pleasure. But on Thursday morning, when Aishwarya Rai Bachchan landed in Mumbai from Paris, she broke the golden rule when she dropped in unannounced to meet Abhishek at the Reliance Web World where he was doing out-of-town press interviews. Says a source, "Lately, Abhishek and Aishwarya have had very little time to spend together. After their short anniversary holiday, Abhishek got busy with the shooting of Abhinay Deo's Game in Greece, while, Aishwarya returned to India for a stint of Robot. She was then in Paris to honour Brazilian tennis champ Gustavo Kuerten for his work with disadvantaged children." Says a source, "At the charity dinner that followed, Aishwarya bonded with Steffi Graf and Mary Pierce, and kept missing Abhishek because he was a big fan of both." The minute she landed in Mumbai from Paris, Aishwarya asked the family driver to take her wherever Abhishek was. A first for her, because, normally she doesn't intrude when her husband is working. Even when she joins him on long outdoors, she never hangs around the sets when he's shooting. Says a friend of Aishwarya, "This time, she made an exception because she was missing Abhishek all the way from Paris to Mumbai. And besides, Abhishek was doing promotional work for their film together. She not only met him, she also joined impromptu to talk to their fans on radio in Jaipur and Ahmedabad." Says a family friend, "The funny part is that the Bachchans are never together these days. Now that Aishwarya is home, the senior Bachchan has left for Paris, the city that Aishwarya left yesterday."

Not only he is Mr. Midas Touch today, when it comes to Box-Office collections, time and again it has been proved that the Akshay-endorsed FMCG brands hot the jackpot in no time he comes on board. A few examples of this can be cited in the form of LG, Dollar banians, Thums Up, Micromaxx mobiles ... the list is practically endless. If that wasn't just enough, here's one more brand that's making its foray into Akshay's kitty. In other words, the latest deal in Akshay's kitty is Manappuram General Finance & Leasing Limited, of which he will be the brand ambassador. The big announcement will be made early next week.
