Thad Allen after visiting Grand Isle and being briefed on the BP oil spill relief efforts in the Gulf Coast region at Louis Armstrong International New Orleans Airport in Kenner, La. Scottwood Capital’s Advance Of Month End Ass-Grovelling Letter May Not Have Been Necessary

On May 28, Scottwood Capital Management sent a letter to investors to let them know that despite never in the firm’s history had they discussed results in writing during the month, “aberrational circumstances” had forced them to do so. Obviously, one thought this could safely assume they meant things were ass-bleedingly bad, particularly because there were lot references to “lessons learned” and those that received a hard copy of the note reported tears streaked down the page. So more like rectal-prolapse bad. As it turns out, it was more like just a bit of chafing. According to investors the fund ended May down -18.5 percent, leaving them at -2.1 percent for the year.

“Sophisticated” Investors Now Claiming They Were Ignorant (Baby) Sheep

And don’t give them that crap about the disclosures– those things were paragraphs long! You think a sheep reading at a 3rd grade level’s gonna go through all that?

When Merrill Lynch & Co. raced ahead of its rivals to become the king of collateralized-debt obligations last decade, pensions and hedge funds weren’t its only targets. The Wall Street firm also used its vaunted network of financial advisers to pitch the risky investment pools to Main Street. Some of these individual investors now say they weren’t sophisticated enough, despite their relative wealth, to understand the dangers.”We were just lambs being led to the slaughter,” said Michael Slomak, a member of a Cleveland family that he says invested $2.65 million in several Merrill-issued CDOs. He says these structured securities, typically based on a pool of debt such as mortgages, had a level of risk that was never adequately explained. The family lost all but $16,500, according to an arbitration claim the family brought against Merrill before the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

Merrill spokesman said investors signed a disclosure document stating that the CDO “involves a considerable amount of risk and that some or all of the investment may be lost.” Other CDO investors admit they didn’t read or overlooked certain risk disclosures spelled out in the prospectuses.

Jeffrey Gundlach’s Milkshake, Sex And Drug Paraphernalia Bring All The Investors To The Yard

Suck it, TCW. No, really. Do it.

Congratulations are in order for Jeff Gundlach and the DoubleLine Team! In addition to being ranked number one globally in asses (on tape), the new firm has gathered the most assets among 2010 fund launches. Naturally this calls for a celebration and a screening of Ass Traffic Volume 2 at the office would probably be most fitting, if anyone has a copy lying around.

Jeff Gundlach’s new fund is the most successful mutual fund launch of the year, but it is not the only success. Numbers just out from Morningstar show that Pimco, AQR and Fairholme are also pulling in assets with new mutual funds. The data was released by Morningstar in its May U.S. Mutual Fund and ETF Asset Flows report. Of the 80 non-target date funds launched so far in 2010, DoubleLine Total Return has pulled in $610 million since its early April launch. That puts DoubleLine’s fund more than $100 million ahead of the No. 2 new fund — Pimco EqS Pathfinder, an equity fund which pulled in roughly $500 million over a similar time span. The Pimco fund is PM’d by a pair of former investment professionals who jumped from Franklin Resources’ Mutual Series family.

The news must be especially sweet to Gundlach, who founded DoubleLine after leaving TCW last December. At TCW, he was the PM for TCW Total Return, a rival fund to Pimco’s flagship Total Return fund PM’d by Bill Gross.

Does Anyone Know The Significance Of Today?

I’m not talking about the start of the World Cup, though this is as big if not bigger. Give up? You get one free pass for your ignorance but just one. You’d better whip open your Outlook and make sure to mark this a recurring event, ’cause this time next year there will be no reminders. It was on this day, 54 years ago, that a special someone came into the world. To his employees, it should come as no surprise, as his office has been celebrating his glorious “birth week” for the past five days (though this is the first one in which the staff will be forced to go through the motions of singing “Happy Birthday,” and– shhhh!– a former member of the team will be jumping out of a cake as part of his new gig in the erotic baking business). For those of you just finding out about it now, and freaking out about what to buy last minute for the man who has everything, freak out no longer– no gifts are necessary.

Because some people are such fonts of generosity that on their birthday, they think not of themselves and what they will receive, but rather how they can brighten the days of others. Birthday Boy is one of those people. On this special day, June 11, this selfless, gallant gentlemen, has gifted us all with an overflowing bounty of mirth.

As you may be aware, the common refrain among hedge fund starlings is “I want to be the next Steve Cohen.” Unfortunately, up to this point, Steve has kept the secrets to his success close to his SAC-emblazoned fleece vest. But as one gets older (though remains “a youthful-looking 29″)**, he begins to realize he want to leave a legacy. To that end, for the past year, our birthday boy has had a documentary film crew follow him around, obtaining footage of him on the job. The finished product will be released as a training video this fall, but today, as a present to all of you, a preview has been leaked. The first chapter focuses on how to effectively deal with people in business. Watch, and learn.

For security purposes a make-up team has done up Mr. Cohen to look like a British man who goes by the name Malcolm. But that’s really Steve in there.

**Statement is a contractual obligation of all employees.

This Week’s Weird Jobs

Image: Jsome1/Flickr

This week’s weird jobs are ideal for starving artists. That is, they don’t pay, so you can’t buy food. At least you’ll get creative satisfaction…maybe.

1. US: Contest to be my boss!

I am a graphic artist and in need of a job. I have decided to fill this need the same way many people think the can fill their graphic design needs; with a contest!

Here is how it will work;

Send me one weeks worth of salary and benefits. I will keep all of the checks that are sent to me and use all of the benefits.

Whoever sends me the best salary and benefits package will win the contest and get the prize of two days of graphic design work!!!

Good Luck! I am really looking forward to receiving your payment packages!

* Compensation: 2 days of Graphic Design work

The irony certainly works in this job post.

2. Austin: Seeking hardworking service providers…

I’m a fabulously wealthy photographer / artist making money hand over fist. Here’s what I need:

A mechanic to overhaul my custom ‘57 Chevy.
A maid to clean my house on a regular basis
A doctor to perform some minor surgery on me.
A band to perform theme music for me where ever I go.
A carpenter and electrician to build an extra wing on my sweet house in East Austin.
A nanny to watch my spoiled kids.

Of course there will be no pay involved. In return for your services you will get FULL CREDIT on my website, AND you can add all of this work to your PORTFOLIO! If you ask me, this is an absolutely awesome deal!

I hope to have you work for me soon!

Did the same person who wrote posting #1 write this one, too?

3. CA: Seeking Writers!!! Write Us A Slogan & Win Cash!!!
