Industry Roundup: Tim Burton and John August May Be Teaming Up Again

Monster Mash: John August is in negotiations to write the feature film adaptation of Monsterpocalypse, based on the “strategy game" played with collectible miniature figures. Dreamworks has reportedly been courting Tim Burton to take on the project as the film's director, but no deal has been made yet. August and Burton have previously teamed up three times on Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Corpse Bride. The two are also working on an adaptation of the 1960’s TV show Dark Shadows, with Johnny Depp attached to star -- also a project about monsters. Could there be such a thing as too many Tim Burton monster movies? (Yeah, probably.) [Heat Vision/HR]

Planning Ahead: Though Green Lantern won’t hit theaters for another year, Warner Bros. has already begun development on a sequel. The studio has hired Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim - all of whom worked on the Lantern screenplay - to write two treatments: one for the second Lantern film and one for the film adaptation of The Flash. Then, per the terms of the deal, they will be asked to write the full screenplay for one of the two projects. Feels like they're going to try to milk a reality show out of this somehow, no? [Heat Vision/HR]

Common Ground: USA has given a cast-contingent pilot order to Common Law, a “comedic buddy cop drama” which centers on two LAPD cops who, wait for it, can’t stand each other. Wes is a methodical ex-lawyer who loves “cars, gardening and his ex-wife” whereas Travis is a ladies’ man who served time in juvie (how bad!). To make the pairing work, their captain sends them to couples’ therapy. Maybe we’re just in Lost withdrawal, but this is basically made for Matthew Fox and Josh Holloway, right? [Deadline]

Shades of Gray: F. Gary Gray (Law Abiding Citizen) is in talks to direct Kane and Lynch, a video game adaptation starring Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx. The film follows a death row inmate (Willis) who - in tandem with a schizophrenic killer (Foxx) - works to free his former team in order to retrieve a stolen fortune. Stunt coordinator Simon Crane was on board as the film’s director, but left in May due to creative differences - presumably Gray, who directed Foxx in Citizen, knows what he's in for. [Heat Vision/HR]

Dinner Delayed: Paramount is moving back the release of the Paul Rudd-Steve Carell comedy Dinner for Schmucks from July 23 to July 30. The switch means that instead of facing off with Angelina Jolie's Salt, Dinner will now go up against Zac Efron's Charlie St. Cloud and Chace Crawford's Twelve. Perhaps they felt the weekend was viable now that Vanessa Hudgens was out of the way. [Risky Business/HR]

Crystal Clear: Noise-electro act Crystal Castles have added a number of U.S. dates in September for their fall tour, which includes a bunch of European festivals and North America and international stops. Huzzah! [Pitchfork]

Last Night on Late Night: David Letterman Pokes Fun at Kourtney Kardashian's Punky Boyfriend

David Letterman had Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian on The Late Show last night and although the notoriously cranky host seemed fairly disinterested in talking to the two reality stars he ribbed Kourtney about her boyfriend from hell, Scott Disick, saying that he appears to have, "a little bit of punk in him." Just a little? Next up, Stephen Colbert thinks Helen Thomas would have fared much better with critics over her notorious comments if she only had a talk radio show, and Jon Stewart rips the White House press corps for fighting over Thomas' seat in the briefing room and engaging in Super Soaker battles the administration instead of holding politicians accountable for their actions. Finally, Jimmy Fallon impresses Jessica Biel with a Pee-Wee Hermanesque tandem bicycle ride. Watch our compilation to see what you missed.

First Look at Verbinski and Depp's Rango is Brief, Mysterious

If you’ve been breathlessly awaiting a look at the upcoming Gore Verbinksi-Johnny Depp animated feature Rango to ascertain whether the Pirates of the Caribbean duo has managed to recreate their unique brand of magic, you, uh, will still be waiting after watching this trailer! The 53-second teaser - which will run before the Karate Kid this weekend - seems more like an impenetrable art piece than a movie preview, revealing next to nothing about the film, which is supposedly about a chameleon going through an identity crisis. And perhaps even more frustrating than the lack of plot details is that we don’t get the satisfaction of finding out what goofy accent Depp is throwing at us this time around.

Jesse Ventura Thinks High School Seniors Should Be Required To See Oliver Stone's Hugo Chavez Film

In one of the more raucous Larry King debates in a while, Jesse Ventura and Oliver Stone engaged in a spirited argument with Republican Rep. Connie Mack about Stone’s Hugo Chavez documentary South of the Border, which paints the Venezuelan president in a favorable light.

“I went and saw Oliver Stone’s film this weekend and I think this film should be mandatory viewing for every high school senior in the United States of America. That’s how strong I feel about it,” Ventura said. “The key to this film is not Hugo Chavez, but the lying and manipulation of the mainstream media and how they flagrantly lie to us.”

An incredulous Mack calls Ventura’s claim “shameful,” leading the two to trade barbs of escalating intensity (one gets the sense that if Mack was in the studio and not via satetille, he and Ventura would be up spitting in each other’s faces). King, at a loss, eventually turns to Stone, who argues calmly that when it comes to Chavez, America has it all wrong: “America is the one one the other side of history here.”

Ahmadinejad: New Sanctions Are Like 'A Used Hankerchief'

As expected, the U.N. Security Council voted Wednesday to implement new sanctions on Iran to force the country to suspend its nuclear program, measures that Barack Obama called “the toughest sanctions ever faced by Iran.” The sanctions, which include cargo inspections and travel bans (though not gas import controls), passed by a 12-2 vote. But Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad isn’t exactly shaking in his boots. The Iranian media is reporting that Ahmadinejad colorfully described the sanctions as similar to a "used handkerchief that should be dumped in a garbage can.”

Work of Art Season Premiere: Judge Jerry Saltz Recaps

Over the last few months, the prospect of a New York art critic acting as a judge on an art-oriented reality-TV show has ruffled some feathers. The show is Bravo’s Work of Art. For better or worse, the art critic is me. I’ve only seen last night’s premiere, so I have no idea if this is the end of my career or not. But I, too, have misgivings. Art on TV and in movies always comes off creepy. And let’s face it — the camera doesn’t exactly love a balding, bespectacled Jewish man of a certain age. The first thought I had when I saw myself on-camera was that I look like a Shar-Pei.

The awful truth is that this was an offer I couldn’t refuse. Not because the money was so good; in fact, I took home less than $1,000 per episode. But the idea of trying to do art criticism in front of a wide audience — even if it was mangled by the format of reality TV — totally thrilled me. It thrills me still.

The first time I saw last night’s episode in its final form, at a press screening a few months back, I was dazzled at how jazzy and professional it looked. New York seemed so sunny and sharp. I laughed a lot more than I thought I would. I still cringed at the show’s subtitle, “America’s Next Great Artist,” but I was amazed nevertheless. Then, about 40 minutes in, my attention flagged. I don’t know if this was my terror, an adrenaline crash, or a sign that we were in for a rocky ride. I’m still not sure. As defensive as it sounds, I’ve now seen the show twice, and it got a lot better the second time.

The whole introduction was jarring — seeing all of these artists jumping, smiling, running, and acting goofy really threw me. What artists act like this? I thought. But when they showed the brief bios, I was totally intrigued. This was the first time I got to properly “meet” the contestants. Before then I only saw them with their work — the judges had no contact with, or information about, any of the artists during filming. When they first walked into the studio I had two thoughts. The first: They’re all so cute. (Of course, to an older person everyone younger looks good.) The second: I know one of these people. I recognized Jamie Lynn Henderson, who introduced herself on the tape as “not just a Christian blonde Barbie wannabe” (a description that really made my head spin). She went to the School of the Art Institute where I had taught, and I had even visited her studio. I immediately told the producers, and they said they’d make that information known. (I also recognized Judith Baum from the art world, although I had never met her.)

In the introduction, Nao said she was “too established for this show.” I had never heard of her. Trog, who someone said was “really well-known as a curator and an artist”? Never heard of him. As for Erik, I was sort of shocked to hear that he was living in his truck and had been an artist “for about six hours.” That may have explained why his expressionistic clown painting struck me as amateurish. Although I ended up really liking him, I got into a long fight with him in the first week. (It was cut.) I squawked that he needed to stop falling back on the excuse that he was “untrained.” I told him no one cares and that I’m “untrained,” too — I have no degrees and never went to writing school. Like most people in the art world, I’m basically making this up as I go. The art world is about trying to invent new definitions of skill.

The way the show is edited, Nao seems pretty obnoxious. But I liked that she had game, and I couldn’t wait to hear what was going to come out of her mouth next. I think I gave her the perfect opening to get off the best line of the night: “I’m not responsible for your experience of my work.” Whether this is total truth or total nonsense, I’ve already seen it on a T-shirt. Meanwhile, my darkest moment by far came when Mark looked into the camera and said something I don’t think I’ve ever heard an artist say before: “Being above average is not bad at all.” For better and worse, the art world is populated by people who think that, on the contrary, being only “above average” is the definition of mediocrity — akin to spiritual-aesthetic death.

As for the winners and losers: I don’t know if anyone noticed, but I didn’t say a good word about Abdi’s painting of Ryan, which everyone else seemed to like. To me, it was garish pop-cartoon illustration. (I also thought that his self-portrait as an alien, which was shown briefly in his introduction, was silly and clichéd, at best.) Of the three so-called “bad” artists of the evening, I didn’t like any of their work and would have been happy had any of them gone home. I admit that Amanda’s painting struck me as the weakest of the bunch. Still, when I heard her little good-bye about “being on this journey,” I got a little sick to my stomach.

But maybe being sick to one’s stomach comes from whatever it is that drives someone like me to even appear on a reality-TV show at all. I know that after the first time I watched the show, the line that kept going through my mind was Erik’s, when he looked at the camera and said, “I’m never going to get laid again.” In truth, my wife has been too busy to see the show. Note to self: hide the DVD.

Anthony Weiner Is Bringing A Goat to the Capitol

The New York representative, whose bold demonstrations have typically taken the form of crazy rants and sound bites, is taking his game to the next level. Weiner is planning to bring a live goat to a Capital Hill press conference Thursday to denounce what is clearly the great problem of our generation: the subsidy on mohair. Weiner says the government has paid $24 million in mohair subsidies, mostly to goat farmers in Texas, over the past ten years. [Metropolis/WSJ]

Espada and Diaz Back Down After Paterson Says He Won't Respond to 'Threats'

After talking a big game about refusing to vote for another David Paterson emergency budget bill, Pedro Espada and fellow Bronx Democrat Ruben Diaz Sr. are backing down a bit on their threat, after some fighting words from Paterson this morning.

"I'm not going to respond to any threats, any thug activity," Paterson said at a summit this morning. "I'm not going respond to any black mail in that respect,” referencing Espada’s comment Tuesday that he didn’t want to “resort to name calling.”

Today, Espada said he might not have an issue with cuts to mental health and human services programs, though he still managed to get in a pointed jab.

"It need not be the line in the sand, but I have to see what else he puts in there," Espada said. "If there are unacceptable budget cuts in these unilateral actions by the governor - a governor that is now a lame duck governor that New York State has lost interest in - that I cannot support that."

Diaz, though, seemed more revved up by the back-and-forth: "The language that the governor used to describe me doesn't help," he said. "It makes it difficult for me to draw back. Bye-bye."

Planning Underway For Fourth Bourne Film

Universal is moving ahead with a fourth film in the Jason Bourne franchise, tentatively titled The Bourne Legacy, with Tony Gilroy, who wrote the first three films, returning to scribe the fourth. While the producing team behind the first three films is also coming back, star Matt Damon is notably not currently on board. Damon has said publicly he would not be returning to the franchise unless director Paul Greengrass is behind the camera and since that is a extreme long shot, it appears as though Taylor Lautner a new actor will find himself in the unenviable position of having to live up to Damon's patented steely glare and winsome affability. E-mail Addresses of 114,000 iPad Owners Exposed in Security Breach

Due to a security hole on AT&T’s website, a group of hackers was able to obtain the e-mail addresses of about 114,000 iPad owners, according to a Gawker report. Gawker got its hands on a list of the e-mail addresses, which includes high-profile military officials, congressmen and Justice Department members, as well as execs at the New York Times, Time Warner, Conde Nast and Viacom. The hacking group, which goes by the name of Goatse Security (after a gross-out internet picture which you definitely should not Google), found that entering an iPad ID number on AT&T’s website returned the owner’s e-mail address; the group kindly notified AT&T and the breach was rectified. Apple has not yet commented, while AT&T released a statement that they became aware of the issue on Monday and are "continuing to investigate."

“Off-Brand” Is the New Ugly: More Rumors About American Apparel’s Hiring Policy

In the latest chapter of American Apparel’s discrimination against non-skinny, non-hot people, an unnamed source has leaked a transcript from a May 18 conference call during which retail managers were instructed to submit “full-body head-to-toe” photographs of job applicants for approval. “Your looks determine your position and pay rate, not how effective you are at your job,” the source told Gawker. Even more sketchily, staff recruiters are supposed to send the photos from their personal e-mail, not the store account. The company reiterated that they screen purely for personal style, not physical beauty; applicants may be turned away if their looks fit into the fuzzy category of “off-brand.” [Gawker]

Talking With the Feisty Newsweek Tumblr Writer

Newsweek.com

Since late last month, when it was announced that Newsweek was going to go on the auction block, the magazine has received advice and criticism (seemingly more of the latter) from all corners of the Internet. Columnists, bloggers, and even Jon Stewart have weighed in on what the magazine should do, and what it and editor Jon Meacham allegedly did wrong to get the title where it is today. Meacham went on Stewart's show the day the sale was announced, and has talked about it subsequently on television and in interviews. But the magazine has been responding to critics through another route: its own Tumblr. Written by the mag's social-media guru Mark Coatney, the Tumblr is at times funnily philosophical about Newsweek's situation, and at other times fiercely defensive. Last week, Coatney took apart a David Carr column about the sale piece by piece, speaking up for Meacham and poking back at critics. Then this week he "edited" a gloomy Howard Kurtz column on the same subject.

Coatney laid into Kurtz for not being familiar enough with the magazine or its history to come to the conclusions he did. "Howard — Apparently your knowledge of Newsweek’s staffers begins and ends with [Jonathan Alter, Howard Fineman, Mike Isikoff, Evan Thomas, Fareed Zakaria, and Robert Samuelson]; see David Carr’s piece today for an example of a journalist who has actually read Newsweek in the past five years," he wrote, going on to opine that Kurtz's pessimistic conclusion was reached without any real knowledge of how many bidders there are for the magazine. Coatney also critiqued Kurtz's opening ("This lede is a pretty obvious cliché, Howard; pls rework") and conclusion ("Ah, the classic newsmagazine kicker, in which you sum up your case as if it were fact. Sadly, we don’t buy it. This is a straw argument, and a thin one at that"), and earned himself a response from the clearly ruffled Kurtz. "It's sad that some folks at Newsweek have gotten so thin-skinned and defensive. I'm the one who broke through the lazy narrative by reporting there were more bidders that haven't been publicly identified," Kurtz said. "I want Newsweek to survive as much as anyone, but the hard truth is that the outlook is rather bleak, which is why stars like Mike Isikoff are bailing out."

We Gchatted with Coatney about his Tumblr, and how he's out on his own, defending his magazine without any editors or safety line.

So how long have you been writing the Newsweek Tumblr?
Since September of last year. We had one for I think at least a year before that, but it was just an RSS. I'd always wanted to do more, but didn't really have time, and wasn't sure what to do with it (as in, what's the voice of Newsweek? How do you write like that?). But we hired a couple more editors (my day job is as an editor for the site) and suddenly I had some more time, so I kind of jumped in.

So what's the mandate? Or do you even have one?
I guess it's a self-mandate ... I just started this thing up really because I was fascinated with this as an avenue for reaching readers that we weren't reaching on the regular Newsweek.com site. I really believe in the notion that on the web, especially if you're a relatively small site like Newsweek, you have to go where the readers are and kind of lure them in, you know? I hate, for instance, that most big websites have Twitter feeds that are just RSS — where's the value in that? I already have Google reader. What I wanted to do with Tumblr (and to some extent on Twitter, which I also started for Newsweek) is to be more conversational.

So was it your decision to start talking to readers about Newsweek itself when news of the sale came up? Or did someone assign you to be the Newsweek Online Defender?
Oh, that. Yeah, that was totally me — and for the record, I've never talked to Meacham about this. And I don't clear it with anyone here, or even let them know I'm doing it. I've long used this as a space to talk about Newsweek, and what we hope to accomplish online (see, for instance, this, which is kind of our Tumblr manifesto), and it seemed only natural and honest to use it as a venue to talk about the sale, which in recent weeks has meant answering criticism. I also think that's vitally important, actually, that we talk about this in an honest, not-PR kind of way.

So it's not edited? I think that's actually pretty revolutionary. It's pretty hard to imagine another magazine letting this kind of messaging come out without being carefully vetted, and coming from the mouth of anybody but the editor-in-chief.
Yeah, all the typos and poor reasoning are all mine! I think when I started this it was as this kind of behind enemy lines thing where if I'd been captured saying something really stupid or embarrassing Newsweek could deny all knowledge of the Tumblr's existence. I will say that, for all the criticism Newsweek gets for being this stodgy old place, they were actually really progressive about this — they trusted me to not say anything too awful. Basically, if you don't trust your journalists there's something wrong with your organization.

So the response has been good?
Yeah, pretty great both internally and externally. I think that people here appreciate that there's a place where Newsweek defends itself against unfair criticism — God knows there's enough fair criticism you can make of us; it's nice to be able to speak out against the other kind.

Yes. There's clearly too much coverage of Newsweek's fate for you to respond to. But other than the two pieces you've specifically critiqued, what do you find to be the main problems generally with the coverage of the sale?
I think in general the coverage has been too focused on the journalism, and not so much on the underlying business; I think the stories have been a little credulous (that meme going around that "if the Washpost company couldn't save Newsweek nobody can" is nonsensical and particularly irksome). And I have to say that I'm surprised at the extent to which Meacham has been singled out for the source of all of Newsweek's problems, when he clearly is not.

I liked the point you made about Rick Stengel and the Time PR team spinning about having "won" the newsmagazine war. You said, "We would just like to remind them that there but for the grace of Larry Hackett go you all." As in, without People and InStyle, there would be no Time. Does it feel like they are gloating?
I mainly think that they're being short-sighted to think of this in such old-fashioned "Time vs. Newsweek" terms. I mean, there are enough people out there writing obits for the entire newsmagazine genre, and while I personally think there's a lot of life in that kind of thing, both in print and on the web, if Newsweek truly can't make a go of it then I think that means Time is also another step closer to the grave. In this business right now I think it's better for everyone if there is a lot of healthy, economically viable competition.

So what do you think is going to happen?
I hope this isn't too much of a cop-out, but I truly don't know. I'm sure the Post Company would like to get this thing settled before the end of the year one way or the other. My own feeling — and again, this is without any actual knowledge of what's going on — is that we'll get a buyer who will be able to bring some resources to this, and we'll come out of this okay.

Unsolicited Endorsement: Derrick Comedy’s “Mystery Team”

I made up my mind before watching Mystery Team — the first full-length feature film from the Derrick Comedy guys, architects behind numerous internet classics like Bro Rape, History of the Drunk Dial, and probably my favorite, the NSFW Spelling Bee sketch — that if I didn’t like the movie, I wasn’t gonna write about it.

I too badly want to see worthy people from the sketch realm (back where I started as a young tyke, on the STREETS) succeed, but I also certainly didn’t want to have to lie and sacrifice the golden integrity I’ve earned through years of scrupulous, ground-breaking bloggery. Is that biased? I guess. But eff you anyway, James Cameron.

Fortunately, to my relief and sincere delight, the movie is really, really funny.

My almost reviewy-type thoughts, after the jump:

The story centers around the Mystery Team, three high-school-aged kids (played by the Derrick guys) who used to run a childrens’ detective agency, but continue to foolishly cling to their detective aspirations well past the age where it’s adorable / not-clueless for them to be doing so. It’s an actual movie with an actual plot, not a collection of sketches, and it’s immensely watchable the whole way through; the characters are enjoyable enough to drive the full-length movie but still cartoony enough not to give false pretense about the movie wanting to be anything other than enjoyable slapstick, and the script steers clear of the alt-comedy “too cool for actual jokes” mentality with tons of unselfconscious physical gags and a bunch of really funny, overly specific/absurd throwaway lines, not unlike 30 Rock (where Donald Glover non-coincidentally wrote for several years).

The film is also loaded with intricate, nostalgia-inducing kid-detective-clichés — giant magnifying glasses, humorously low-stakes crimes, nonsensical swear-word euphemisms, searching for clues by violently scrounging through drawers — as well as a likable supporting cast (including Bobby Moynihan and Aubrey Plaza, among others), and it’s really short, a virtue that’s increasingly overlooked by comedies nowadays.

Mystery Team is an absurd, stupidly fun and ultra-watchable 90-minute comedy, and it’s on Amazon and Netflix. Watch it. It’s not hard.

And no, I still haven’t gotten around to watching Precious. Priorities in order, people. Is the advice my partial-sentence-loving grandpa used to say. Ol’ Partial-Sentence Gramps, we called him. That’s the last line of my review – feel free to pull it for marquee/newspaper purposes, anyone.

Sex and the City 2 Blamed for Booming Speedo Sales in UK

U.K. retailers have experienced booming sales of skimpy male swimsuits: Sales are up 21 percent at Debenhams and have doubled at John Lewis, and British website Ciao has reported a 400 percent increase in online searches for Speedos in the past few months. What could possibly convince pasty, paunchy Brits to showcase their nether regions with such abandon?

Sex and the City 2, obviously — or so says the Telegraph, citing a scene where nine members of the Australian football team frolic poolside, bulges abounding. And you thought the most offensive part of the movie was Samantha tossing condoms around a Muslim marketplace! This Daily Mail opinion piece, which features more euphemisms for male body parts than we ever could have imagined (our fave: “Mummy Hamster and her two baby pups”), will hopefully curb the trend.

Video Look Book: The Retro Salon Owner With Full-Body Tattoos

Vintage devotee Russell Manley extends his love of retro fashion to his salon, Tommy Guns. "We kept it all vintage-looking because it fits with the area," he says. "I can’t imagine being in another part of New York other than the Lower East Side." When our Video Look Book caught up with Manley, he was wearing a collarless shirt by Craig Russell, trousers and suspenders from Ralph Lauren's now-defunct Double RL label, and wing-tip oxfords he found in a Japanese store on Prince Street. But his best accessories may just be his handlebar mustache and full-body tattoos, which "stop at the knees so it doesn't look like I've got tights [on]." See more of Manley in our Video Look Book.

9 by Design’s Novogratz Family Sign On to Design Mexican Hotel

With their first two hotel projects, husband-and-wife design team Bob and Cortney Novogratz created a virtual beach paradise on the Jersey Shore. Now, they'll be working on one in actual paradise: The stars of Bravo's 9 by Design told us at last week’s wrap party that their company, Sixx Design, just signed on to design a 48-room boutique hotel in the Mexican resort town of Punta Mita, about 26 miles from Puerto Vallarta. While this will be the couple’s third hotel project to feature their signature ultramodern-meets-eclectic-chic style, joining Bungalow, which opened in August of last year, and Cabana, which is not yet completed, it’s their first outside of the United States. Slated to open on Thanksgiving, 2011, the budget is set to exceed $5 million. "The hotel in Punta Mita is a chance for Sixx Design to do something totally unexpected and different," Bob Novogratz told us. Expect Bob and Cortney to travel around little Mexican villages with their seven adorable yuppie kids, carefully handpicking each and every piece of furnishing to then be used to fill the hotel. They say they're hoping to bring a "downtown New York" feel to an area dominated by traditional old-fashioned resorts like the Four Seasons and St. Regis. "Think Frida Kahlo meets the Campana brothers!” Novogratz said.

Cindy Crawford’s Daughter Thinks Models ‘Don’t Need Any Special Skills’

During today’s appearance on Rachael Ray's talk show, Cindy Crawford said that her 8-year-old daughter Kaia wants to be a dancer, singer, or teacher when she grows up. “But she [also] said something really funny. She’s like, ‘But maybe I’ll model first, because you don’t need any special skills,’” recalled Crawford, laughing. Ray made an oh-no-she-didn’t face, but the supermodel wasn't about to get offended. “She’s kind of right. I mean, you do have to go to school for other stuff,” she said, then added that she plans to keep her daughter off the catwalk for the time being.

In other news, Crawford says she works hard to set a good example for Kaia’s body image: “She sees me exercising, she sees me eating healthy. But if we go out for ice cream, I make sure I order ice cream, because I don’t want her to think, ‘Oh gosh, being a woman really stinks, because you don’t get ice cream,'" she said. “[But] you know, I get, like, the baby cone.” Oh, the sacrifices of motherhood!

Supporting PopEater to Support Zach Gilford

The website PopEater has started a Facebook campaign to nominate Zach Gilford for an Emmy.

Who is Zach Gilford? How dare you.

This is Zach Gilford:

He plays Matt Saracen in the amazing, possibly best show on television, Friday Night Lights. You might not watch it and that’s OK, a lot of people don’t. Actually, no, it’s not OK, you really should watch it. Then I can talk to someone other than my friend Pat about how Connie Britton is the best ever or how I want Coach Taylor to be my husband. Or how Jesse Plemons as Landry has some of the best comic timing on television. And Riggins. We won’t even get into Riggins. Fine, here’s Riggins:

Anyway, I won’t really get into what happens in the latest episode, “The Son,” which PopEater (and me) thinks warrants Zach an Emmy win, but just trust that it does. So hard. You should watch the episode. I’m too deep into the show to really know if it stands alone. I think you should go out and start with Season 1 and work your way up, but you could also start with this season (5). It’s all on Hulu, which I just tried to link to but it almost exploded my computer. Hulu’s not usually like that, still go there. Also, if you’re a The Wire fan, Wallace from Season 1 of The Wire is on Friday Night Lights! Wallace!

To those of you who watch FNL, how great was this last episode? I had three drinks before I watched it so I cried a lot, but I think that would have happened regardless. OK, you have your orders. It’s not like you’re doing anything tonight. At the very least join the Facebook group. He’s like Betty White, only not at all!

And, again, good call PopEater. Such a good call. I was talking about how Zach (and, really, all of them, starting with Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler) deserved an Emmy with my friend Pat but it’s not like I did anything. I enjoy piggy backing on other peoples causes.

Man Moves Entire Apartment Using the Subway, Loses Friends in Process

Min promised Teng-Yu Huang (pictured here) dinner as a peace offering.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority boasts that it moves over 5 million people a day, but how many people does it really move? Last week it served that purpose for Young Min, 24, who packed up stuff from a Korean homestead in Flushing, Queens, and moved it all to a one-bedroom on the Upper West Side — using only the subway. While easy on his wallet, the move turned out to be hard on his friendships: To help him get all of his belongings from one place to the other, Min enlisted two friends from his language school. Together they moved his air conditioner, collapsible double-rod closet, dishes (including serving platters and utensils), laptop, linen, quilts, books, clothes, and assorted framed pictures, a soup cauldron, Korean medicine, condiments, and a 40-pound bag of rice onto the 7 train, then to Times Square, through the Times Square Station to the 1 train, and finally to the new place on West 64th. (Mid-trip, the air conditioner broke through the trunk holding it.) The next day, when he called for help moving his bed, again on the subway, his friends didn't return his calls and one even skipped their Kaplan class in order to avoid getting roped into another move. Min says he left assorted items at the homestead including a TV and a wooden dresser. “I do want my TV but it’s too hard," he told Intel. "I don’t want to go back. I can’t ask anyone else to help. They told everyone how hard it was and so there’s no one else to ask."

Danish Label Nümph Arrives Stateside Right in Time for Summer

The vibrant graphic prints and modified silhouettes of Danish label Nümph are actually the collective vision of seven women, ranging from experienced fashion designers to marketing managers and graphic designers. After working separately for various fashion brands in their native Denmark, the women joined forces to launch the Nümph label five years ago. The collection earned raves at Copenhagen Fashion Week and was scooped up by stores throughout Denmark and Norway. This spring, the line lands in the U.S. for the first time, stocked at internationally minded boutiques Babel Fair, Pixie Market, and Pop.

With seven collaborators at the helm, the label is particularly prolific, turning out nearly a hundred styles every season (and six full collections per year in Denmark). The spring offering is bold but eminently wearable — full of asymmetrical dresses; slouchy, sleeveless knits; and painterly graphic prints — while the fall collection will bring layerable loose-knit sweaters, demure pencil skirts, and office-appropriate silk dresses. And though the inventive silhouettes and splashy patterns are reason enough to seek out the brand, the prices are its real selling point: Summer dresses hover comfortably below $100, while winter knits rarely top $200. Click ahead for looks from Nümph's spring and fall collections.

More Reshuffling at Vogue: Patrick O’Connell Departs

Patrick O’Connell has stepped down from his post as Vogue’s director of communications, citing the need for “a personal change.” During his twelve-year tenure, he handled damage control during some of the magazine’s hairiest moments, including its controversial “LeBron Kong” cover and the unflattering portrait that was The Devil Wears Prada. He reportedly submitted his resignation last week and is expected to stay on till a successor is chosen. [WWD]

Stella McCartney Hates the Word ‘Resort’

New York fashion director Harriet Mays Powell caught up with Stella McCartney at her resort 2011 presentation last night. Sorry, spring presentation. “How unsexy is that word? Does anyone even use the word resort?" the designer asked. "Even people that have resorts. We call it spring.” Which is fitting, since the season inspired the collection (which we'll be posting in full soon). “It’s hopeful and uplifting. Trying to keep the same language we had in the show with all the flowers and all the whites, just to make it really pure and sharp.” See the looks, and watch Stella's models dance and play chess, in the video.

“Somebody Do Something” -Salma Hayek

No, that is not a quote from a PSA that Salma Hayek did about the oil spill. It’s from this video, which I’ll just preface by saying that, if you have a list of questions that you have prepared in the event that you ever meet Salma Hayek, you can cross out, “What’s your biggest fear?”. I can tell you right now. Or, rather, show you:

It’s snakes. Her worst fear is clearly snakes.

Well done, Maya Rudolph, for keeping calm under pressure, specifically the pressure of Salma Hayek’s 18 inch heels in her thigh.

I also hope the irony of promoting the film Grown Ups is not lost on any of us. I’m not saying that I’m immune to snake fear. But it is not Hayek in its proportions. It’s just that, if I’m ever in that specific situation, you know, on Extra promoting an ensemble family comedy, I hope to act in a Rudolph-like manner when faced with a rogue snake.

WAIIIIIITTTTTT AAAAAA MINNNNNNUTTTTTTEEEEE — I don’t think this video is actually about coffee!!!! What do you call that again? Metalgear? I think it’s a metalgear.

(Butseriously — this vid made me laugh. I can’t tell if I’m just at the point where the words “Kevin” or “Costner” automatically crack me up, but I cracked up nonetheless):

Try Not To Laugh At These Photos Of Kevin Costner Testifying

Much hullabaloo has been made on the ‘netz concerning the government’s decision to bring Kevin Costner into the oil spill equation, but these pictures of Kevin Costner actually sitting there — Mister Brooks himself!! — testifying to a House Science & Technology Committee with a “Mr. Costner” nameplate in front of him, it’s just…it’s too much.

The government literally managed to accomplish the one possible thing to make me laugh at this oil spill situation. I’m sure the mics aren’t on and no one’s actually recording anything, but that is a random celeb/nameplate combo for the ages:

Open Thread: The Monster Squad Vs. The Lost Boys

My Internet friends/soulmates Ross and Ross over at Metro UK have done it again: Posed a question that invites serious discourse and spirited debate. Last time they asked which was the better film, Wayne’s World or Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure? Now they debate the merits of The Monster Squad versus The Lost Boys. Read their arguments here and leave your opinions in this space. I love love love The Monster Squad. And my claim to fame when I was small was that my aunt’s brother did special effects for it. His technical title was “head monster maker: dracula and bat transformation.” So cool. HOWEVER. Alex Winter is in The Lost Boys and it has one of the most KICK ASS theme songs EVER. So listen to this as you ponder and post.

America’s Got Talent Gets Heckled By Doogie Horner

I’ve never watched America’s Got Talent before, I’m more of a Britain’s Got Talent kind of gal, in that I watched it once when one Ms. Susan Boyle was on singing a little ditty called “Master Of The House.”* (Sidenote: If you think I was bothered by the wrath incurred by my slight Peter Facinelli reprimand, you are wrong, as if you say ONE slightly mocking thing about Susan Boyle you are banned from England and most of America. Blog commenters have that power, it’s sort of like a citizens arrest.) Anyhoops, I came across this on the Internets and, although this man does not out-Boyle Susan Boyle, he outsmarts the audience and wins Howie Mandel’s heart/respect. Those are my EXACT two life goals. So, without further ado, this is stand up comedian Doogie Horner on America’s Got Talent.

First, who is this a-hole Piers Morgan? I’m only slightly acquainted with him (from the aforementioned Boyle viewing), but I’ve previously brushed him off as a Simon Cowell impersonator. But not like a fun, draggy impersonator, but more like a poor man’s Simon Cowell. And I am only half wrong because he’s an a-hole like Simon, but he’s not correct in his assessment of talent, unlike Simon. Anyway, don’t like him (cue people telling me that they love him). I always love me some Sharon Osbourne and OUT OF LEFT FIELD here comes Howie Mandel being great and supportive! A true Boyle-y moment might have occurred had Howie decided to actually shake Doogie’s hand, that would have been incredible, but, you know that whole Howie thing. That’s not changing. Anyway, best of luck Doogie! I cannot imagine a much harder scenario for a comic to be in (performing in front of comedy great Nick Cannon) and you killed it and did not give me second-hand! Amazing.

*Le Miz jokes!

Thanks, The Daily What!

Patrick Stewart’s First Act As Knight: An Awkward Stage Spat At The Glamour Awards

Patrick Stewart was knighted last week in a long-overdue ceremony honoring his long-standing being famous and having been born in England, the two main criteria for becoming a protector of the realm.

In his first major knightly task, Stewart protected the Crown from comedian James Corden at the Glamour Awards last night with a series of confusing, silence-inducing insults:

Hrm. I’d probably take Patrick Stewart’s side if he punched my daughter, but even I have to admit that this clip wasn’t exactly Sir Pat’s finest hour. He’s already achieved Awesome Tenure, though, so no amount of non-awesome can get him fired from Awesome University, even if he sleeps with an Awesome student or gets a DUI or something.

Video of Stewart’s actual finest hour, after the jump:

New York Post Did It: Philly Athlete In A Dress LOL!

Here’s the cover of today’s Chicago Tribune, promoting Game Six of the Chicago/Philadelphia Stanley Cup Finals with a Photoshopped picture of Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger in a dress:

“Looks like Tarzan, skates like Jane” – ZINGGGG!!! Does Jane skate poorly? I’ll bet she does, Chrissy! (GIRL!!!)

But wait – before we shower praises on the Trib for this creative and wholly mature display of divine comedy, let’s take a look back at a certain New York Post cover on the eve of last October’s Yankees/Phillies World Series:

Wow. So, the professional newspaper isn’t just Photoshopping a rival athlete in a dress and slinging 1910s schoolyard insults at him, they’re Photoshopping a rival athlete in a dress and slinging 1910s schoolyard insults at him just months after another paper of questionable repute did the exact same thing.

Looks like we’ve got a trend catchin’ on! Philly athletes in dresses on covers of newspapers = SONG OF THE SUMMER. Kids are blasting this newspaper cover from their convertibles as we speak.

Justin Bieber Uses The Chuck E. Cheese Defense

Justin Bieber was recently told to leave his seat at a showing of Get Him To The Greek because that particular section of the theater, called premium seating, was only 21 and over. First, let me visit this theater of wonder wherein they serve alcoholic beverages. I’ve heard of these places, but they seem but a dream as I have to sneak my warm 12 ounce beer into the showing of New Moon in Astoria and sit in the very last row, sweating, hating everyone in the theater. Every last underage one of them. Were I at the Showcase Cinema de Lux at Patriot Place in Foxborough, Massachusetts sipping on an ice cold dirty martini, only vaguely noting that I am allowed access to a place that one of the biggest celebrities in the world, who regularly causes riots in Australia, is denied entry. Massachusetts! So crazy with their marrying of the gays and the Celtics and Matt Damon and Robin Williams and the denying of the Biebers. What? Anyway. After he was asked to leave the section, Justin turned his be-banged headed to the manager of the establishment and quoth:

“Chuck E. Cheese sells alcohol and I have no problem getting in there!”

Well, yeah! That’s because every high school kid knows that Chuck E. Cheese is the bar they can get into! Really lax with the I.D.-ing that place. Kidding, of course. I had no idea that they served alcohol at Chuck E. Cheese because I haven’t been there since I was eight. Wait, that’s not true. I went back when I was about 15 to see if it was still great and, surprise, it wasn’t. It was depressing and full of scary animatronics. I will never go back there, even if Bieber is inside, standing next to a margarita. Because clearly, from this questionable quote, he loves it there. Dude cannot get enough Chuck E. Cheese. He wishes he were there right now.

Anyway, the manager was not thrown by this seemingly impermeable Chuck E Cheese logic. And he implemented Cinema de Lux Law and kicked Bieber out of the section anyway. Bieber then had to enjoy Get Him To The Greek with a bunch of sober a-holes. Fair enough, I would want to see Get Him To The Greek whilst buzzed. It would make Russell Brand seem so much more Brandy. Brandier? Point being, Get Him To The Chuck E. Cheese!
