THE FILM
'It's the story that matters, not the background of a frame'
This single statement summarises the vision that Phalke had 100 years back when he began work on India's first feature film - 'Raja Harishchandra'. While shooting the film, when an assistant warns that a bunch of trees behind the lead actor were not in synch with the legend from the era gone by, Phalke wasn't a wee bit worried and came up with these golden words.
Now even if 50% of the film makers from today's time would have remembered these words, the state of Bollywood would have been totally different and far better today.
That was the magic of cinema that Phalke has envisioned a century back and it is enthralling to see an unknown story been told - that of the birth of India cinema. Hats off to first time film maker Paresh Mokashi for actually thinking of making a film around this story and coming up with results that are excellent and give a great account of what actually went into the journey of cinema that started in India.
Told entirely in a humorous tone, this Marathi film is sheer gem which could be India's own Cinema Paradiso if marketed, promoted and released well. Despite the fact that it was India's nomination to Oscars last year, there was just no buzz around its theatrical release that led to it being lost in the oblivion. Thankfully, the DVD of the film is out now (though again without any promotion and available only at select stores) which gives audience a chance to look at yet another story which could have been conveniently forgotten.
Phalke (Nandu Madhav), a middle class man from (then) Bombay was fascinated by the moving images when he happened to catch a quick show of an English film. Coming up with a strong resolve to make something similar in India as well, he set out on a journey where he was supported by his understanding wife (Vibhavari Deshpande) and two kids. Despite the hardships that the family faced in its journey, the smile was never lost on anyone's face, that ultimately led to the mission being accomplished in the form of 'Raja Harishchandra'.
A story like this could have easily become a documentary tale had Paresh decided to narrate facts as is. However, there is brilliance in his writing as he injects humour in practically each and every scene. Shot in a style that reminds of the good old days of 'Tenalirama' and 'Malgudi Days' from Doordarshan, Harishchandrachi Factory is so easy on mind and light hearted in appeal that you never feel burdened with the all the information being shared. Instead, you look forward to how a man with limited technical expertise, sparse resources, no female actors and an inexperienced cast and crew could actually pull off the first ever feature film from India.
It is hard not to chuckle at Nandu's antics as he doesn't allow any hardships to come in his way. Whether it is accumulating funds for his films, auditioning actors, getting exasperated by the indiscipline amongst his actors or props going wrong - he handles it all with a smile, something which is clearly a win for Mokashi as a writer and the director. Also, it is hard to ignore that in a way Mokashi's journey is similar to that of Phalke, both of whom intended to something that was never seen before. This is the reason why the entire film becomes further identifiable.
As actors, Nandu is ace and reminds of sincerity and focus that one had seen from Dilip Prabhawalkar as Gandhi in Lagey Raho Munnabhai. Vibhavari Deshpande as his on-screen wife is a complete natural and seems like someone who was born a century back. Every other supporting actor, whether in big or a small role, is totally capable and comes up with a convincing act. Also, the production values, despite this being a regional value, are decent and doesn't make you feel as if you are watching anything lesser than what you expect from a regular feature film.
In any case, Paresh too follows the statement that Phalke had made a century back:
'It's the story that matters, not the background of a frame'

They always said 'Two's a company, three's a crowd', but the trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy changed it all. Not only have they made some of the most brilliant music that Bollywood has ever witnessed, but also went onto capture territories where very few musicians have been, namely, they went onto become the brand ambassadors of Sennheiser, the very name that spells world-class in recording instruments like microphones, headphones and wireless systems.
The news is that, the trio of S-E-L is not alone now; as they have the light eyed actor-singer-musician Lucky Ali, joining them as the brand ambassador for Sennheiser. Sources close to Bollywood Hungama vouch on this deal to be one of the most lucrative deals to have taken place between a musician and a FMCG company. Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 10 Jun 2010 | 4:04 am Sudhir Mishra to sue writer for defamation & campaign for his ban in industry
A legal notice sent by a writer named Aditya Kripalani accusing Sudhir Mishra of stealing his script has the prolific and distinguished filmmaker very very angry. He intends to take legal action and to fight against false copyright claims that are made for publicity.
Says Sudhir, "Before making such claims or substantiating them by writing about them, people should read my script for Driver which I've apparently stolen from this Kripalani chap. First of all I am not scriptwriter for Driver. Althia Dalmaj Kaushal is. She was suggested to me by my producer Ekta Kapoor. Driver is about forbidden love, that's what attracted Ekta Kapoor to my cinema. Kripalani is basing his assumption on what he has read about my film in the media. Even Arvind Adiga's White Tiger is about a chauffeur and a rich man."
Sudhir claims that the story which Kripalani claims as his own was given to him by producer Manu Kumaran and journalist-writer Pankaj Kapoor 7 years ago. "Manu hired Aditya to write a story for a film that I was to direct. But Manu didn't like Aditya's story. So Manu decided to write it himself. That matter was between Manu and Aditya, not me. I was supposed to direct that film for Zee Telefilms. There's proof of the registration of that story. So now Kriplani is in trouble. Because Kriplani apparently stole Manu Kumaran's idea to write his novel Back Seat. What is he talking about? I think he got excited when he read your article about Ranbir Kapoor being in the project. This man has fallen into his own trap."
Sudhir's lawyer is now preparing a counter-notice. "My lawyers are on the job. But what are Kripalani's allegations? He hasn't read my script. So how does he know my script is taken from him? During my entire career, I've always done original work. If I've to plagiarize at this stage of my career it'd have to from much better sources than this. The pleasure of scripting my films comes from writing about my own impressions and experiences. That's why I'm a filmmaker. Why would I copy this kid? If I owe any inspirational debt to anyone its Guru Dutt, no one else."
Sudhir says the idea of making a film on the neo-affluent class of Delhi is inspired by his cousin. "This cousin had run away from home looking for me. He became a servant in someone's house in Delhi. So it's story based on incidents from my own family. Just a chauffeur's presence in my film doesn't make it anyone else's property. Fortunately my script has evolved in front of my producer Ekta. So she knows where it's coming from. If I wanted to remake Kripalani's book I'd have asked Ekta to buy it, no? In fact she offered to buy Sagarika Ghosh's book for me."
Sudhir now intends to take serious action against Kripalani. "Besides legal action, once I finish my script I will take it to every writer's guild in Mumbai and ask for it to be compared with Kripalani's book. I think people who defame without basis should be barred from our industry. Kripalani has harmed the prospects of any aspiring writer who comes to us. We'll think twice before allowing them access into our office. As for Kripalani, no one will hire him in future either. It's really sad. Why didn't he contact me if he thought he had a grievance? There's proof that he's lying in every line of his. My friends know about Driver for months because I share my ideas openly. I'm not a sneaky plagiarist."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 10 Jun 2010 | 4:01 am Shahrukh's family holidaying with the Kapoors!Yesterday, many B-Town folks left for a Caribbean cruise. Once you are through turning over those 200 odd pages of 'Bhanu Athaiya - The art of costume design', there are a few questions that come to mind:
1) Was this really an autobiography of one of the most famed Bollywood costume designers of all time?
2) Was this book meant to be a crash course on costume designing?
3) Was this an exercise of ego boost by one of the veteran members from the film fraternity?
4) Last but definitely not the least, what exactly forms the target audience of this book?
There are plenty of reasons that such questions crop up. First and foremost, the book - despite presented as an autobiographical tale of Oscar winner costume designer Bhanu Athaiya - isn't quite fleshed out in much detail. Ok, so one certainly doesn't expect n-th level of write ups around what happened in the personal and professional life of Bhanu. However, one still expects a little more from a book rather than brief introduction around the growing up years, Bhanu's fascination for designing, her earlier stint at fashion magazines and her gradual move to the world of movies way back in the 50s. Also, for someone with a huge body of work behind her (she has worked in more than 125 films till date), there certainly would have been quite some stories to tell.
However, this is the very aspect which is missing in this book which just touches upon at the surface level and leaves it there. A reader does get to know about the various encounters that Bhanu had with some of the best in business in the era gone by (Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, F.C. Mehra etc.) but is never quite exposed to how her relationship grew over the years. At maximum, there is some hint given around her earlier meetings and bare minimum logistical details (how and where she met them) and that's about it. Of course, there is a thin rope which is required to be walked in the process of detailing around this because anything in excess could anyways lead to boredom. However, too little is also not quite value for money and this is what one feels on going through this highly expensive book.
Thankfully, the element that still brings in a sense of 'paisa vasool' (and that too only for those who wish to know a little more about the costumes from the era gone by) are through various sketches and stills from the films that Bhanu had worked on from the 50s till Swades. While she did work quite extensively with the likes of Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt on some of their biggest and most memorable projects, Bhanu had also associated herself on number of smaller films. However, the book doesn't mention even one such film and the focus remains only on her bigger projects.
Yes, when references are made to films like Gandhi, Shri 420, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Reshma Aur Shera, Guide, Alibaba Aur 40 Chor, Nikaah, Teesri Manzil or Lagaan, it only turns out to be quite obvious because they have been etched in a cine-goer's memory for years. But what about those 100 odd other films for which she has designed costumes? There must have been important people from these films as well. There must have been certain challenges working on these assignments too. There must have been actors who would have worn costumes that would be worth remembering. This is why one has right reasons to believe that the book is a half baked job because it only talks about the biggest accomplishments but nothing that was anything lesser.
In fact the only place where some level of detailing goes into the book is the chapter where Bhanu describes her association with the film Gandhi. Right from an arrangement being made for her first meeting with the film's director to the deadlines she had to meet to the meticulous manner in which she had to get everything in place to the accolades that came on the release of the film to the Oscar win, Bhanu talks about the glorious phase that she enjoyed then.
Having said that, (as mentioned earlier) the sketches and stills from the past do make one turn over pages eagerly. The layout as well as the overall quality is such that it lends a classy feel to the book. Also, the book is more picture focused with bare minimum text there only to support and adjoining still. Though for Bollywood aficionados, this could well be a quick journey into the past, it is not quite a wholesome experience. Reason being that there would have been dozens of other major designers over the time period gone by who could possibly be having an entirely different take on the state of affairs.
This is why at the end of it all, the book only solves the purpose of a personal account of a costume designer who has managed a well deserved place for herself under the sun and now wishes to share her experience with the rest of the world. Moreover, no individual - howsoever talented he or she may be - can't be expected to work alone and given the body of her work, one has all the right reasons to work that Bhanu would have had close associates and assistants. Any mention or even a fleeting remark around them? None at all! Sad.
In the times when even Shah Rukh Khan fans would think twice about shelling out Rs. 2000/3000 on a biography of his, one wonders how many would actually queue up to pick an autobiography of a costume designer, despite an Oscar award to boast of!

On the 16th of June 2010, all roads will be leading to London's BFI, Southbank. Call it historic? Yes, because the entire Raavan cast is going to be present at the red carpet world premiere of the film. Doubling it up with the presence of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and Mrs. Jaya Bachchan, the night will have more flashes than any other night has ever had in London for a Bollywood film.
A source close to the film tells me, "Mr. Bachchan is off to London last night and will be staying there for one week. He has some felicitation ceremonies to attend and some meetings and then he attends the Raavan premiere with wife Jaya and the cast of Raavan on the 16th. The scene is going to be like what we saw at the Paa premiere. Very rarely do we see the entire Bachchan family together at a premiere."

For some the love for movies goes far ahead of the business, popularity and recognition that come with it. For some it's just the sheer titillation of being part of something original and something worthy. Nakuul Mehta is all set for the release of his upcoming film Avant Garde Pythagoras Sharma (AGPS). An intriguing name with just as intriguing a subject. Talking about his film Nakuul says "It's about a boy named Pythagoras whose father is a mathematics professor and wants him to be an IT professional. Pythagoras has problems with set ways and conventions. Whether its jobs, religion or God! He goes ahead and opposes that. Inside him lives this idealist filmmaker waiting to come out. He is constantly battling between the real life and the way he is expected to be."
AGPS is a film that isn't meant for commercial consumption, far from your popcorn entertainment masala flick, this one here is an Independent film which caters mainly the overseas film festival circuit. Says Nakuul, "We are planning to take the film to festivals as the film caters to European and North American audiences." It surprising to see that so early in his career, Nakuul went ahead and did a festival short film and one that didn't come to him but one that he eagerly wanted to be part of. He shares his experience as he says, "I got this random email one day where there was a script and this director Ajay Singh, was calling out to all interested actors. It was meant to be for all theatre actors and since I was part of the loop it came to me. I read the script and I was like wow! And immediately wrote back. Ajay called and was surprised that a commercial actor like me wanted to be part of it. But he told me that he had written the main role with another actor in mind, Imaad Shah and he was looking for a supporting cast. I had obviously missed that part in the mail. I still met him, but he said that that role was already slotted and he couldn't change the cast now. I still kept in touch. I even sent him an audition I did keeping that role in mind. Eventually he realised that I was one actor that really wanted to be part of this badly."
Being a festival AGPS wouldn't get as much eyeballs. In fact in India itself it might not get that much coverage, how does it help Nakuul's career then? "I don't look at cinema as commercial or non-commercial. The film will be getting exposure to the huge festival circuit and if it becomes famous worldwide, there is a huge chance that it would be released in India as well. As of now the audience is European and North American," replies Mehta.
The film has clear definitions in terms of the market it is made for and thus has elements from across the world in its filmmaking, putting light on that Nakuul says, "The style of filmmaking is very French. It has those elements of surrealism in it from the early French film era as well as all that is abstract. Also the film is part English, part Hindi and part Japanese."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 9 Jun 2010 | 8:16 am Satyajit Ray Trail project in West Bengal to be priortisedThe tourism ministry will priortise the Rs.Source: Entertainment News | 9 Jun 2010 | 7:32 am "Abhishek has been the best co-star I have ever worked with till date" - Vikram
He may be an Aparichit in Bollywood but is so famous down South that he cannot walk the streets of Chennai without being mobbed. After having delivered countless award winning performances down South, this super-talented actor is eagerly awaiting June 18th when two of his films - Raavan (Hindi version) and Raavanan (Tamil version) opens worldwide. In case you are still wondering who we are referring to, it's none other than Vikram who plays husband to Ash in Raavan and the maniacal Raavan in Raavanan. Bollywood Hungama's Nikhil Ramsubramaniam caught up with Vikram and spoke about the challenges playing two different characters simultaneously, experience working with Mani Ratnam and of course sharing ample screen space with the most beautiful woman in the world. Read on...
Even though a lot of people are calling Raavan your Bollywood debut, in the true sense you actually debuted in Bollywood with Aparichit which in itself was a remake of your smash hit Tamil film Anniyan. Considering Aparichit didn't do too well at the B.O. would you like to believe that Raavan is your actual debut in Bollywood?
No...I would still say Aparichit is my debut in Bollywood because even though it didn't do well in the theatres, it's aired repeatedly on one T.V. channel which means that there are a lot of people who have liked the film and are watching it on T.V. In fact, I've met a guy who told me that he has seen it 100 times. Besides, there are many others whom I have met have seen it almost 10-15 times. So it does mean that the film found its audience on T.V. at least and hence I would always say that Aparichit is my debut in Hindi films.
The promos and posters of Raavan mostly showcase Abhishek and Ash even though you play the main hero's role. Would you have liked to see more of you in the promos or do you think it goes well with the marketing strategy?
I am not bothered by these things yaar. I leave it to the makers and the marketing guys. People who have seen the film have told me that they have liked my performance in the film and I am quite happy. On a lighter note, it's actually nice that when they don't show much of me in the promos and posters here, I know in the promos and posters of the Tamil version they aren't going to show much of Prithviraj (the actor who plays the role of Ram in the Tamil version). Ha ha ha...I am just kidding. At the end of the day, I am there in both the films and don't let these things affect me. I am a thorough team player and whatever is best for the team is best for me.
Taking a trip down memory lane, not many people know that you come from a family of actors. Your dad was an actor too. So was acting always your first choice or was it thrust upon you?
I've always wanted to be an actor. I have been crazy about acting since a child. When I was in Class 8, I decided that I too want to act in movies.
You have countless award winning performances down South in many blockbuster films. If you were to pick three of your favourite performances which people out here who haven't watched should watch, which ones would that be?
Pithamagan, Anniyan and Sethu
A lot of people call you Chiyaan Vikram after your film Sethu. How did that happen?
Well...Chiyaan is my nickname in the film Sethu. The film went on to become a huge hit and the name stuck on. In fact I have used the same name in my official website
In the past a lot of actors from the South be it Kamal Haasan, Rajnikanth or even Madhavan for that matter haven't seen similar kind of success in Bollywood... what do you think is the reason?
All these actors were / are doing fairly well in the South so they didn't really see any reason to permanently shift base here. They have a huge market down South. They just did a couple of films here and there in Bollywood.
After Raavan, have you received any offers from Bollywood? Would you like to do more films out here?
Of course...in fact after Aparichit itself I received more than 17 offers which I didn't take up. However now after Raavan, I am more in tune with Hindi so would surely look at some scripts seriously.
So does it mean you dubbed for your own lines in Raavan?
Yes...it's the most difficult thing in the world. (Laughs)
Finally give an honest answer, which role did you enjoying playing more- the good guy Dev or the bad guy Veera?
I enjoyed Veera but am looking forward to how the audience reacts to Dev.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 9 Jun 2010 | 7:05 am "I convinced Punit to cast Imran and Sonam and he did" - Manish Malhotra
He has got the first Filmfare award ever given to a costume designer. He was there for the first shot of actresses making their debut, like Karisma Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Deepika Padukone, Preity Zinta, etc. He was a superstar after Rangeela for making Urmila Matondkar look like a perfect fantasy. He defines creativity as, 'Nothing intellectual'. He will make you look different even in the basic blue denims and a white shirt because he is Manish Malhotra, a self-made man with a discerning eye who knows exactly how something should look, and won't suffer fools who look otherwise. Manish is a clothing guru, a subdued personality, never flinching when it comes to speaking his mind even when the culture would not have found it appropriate. His outfits have expression, modesty, sex appeal and simplicity because that's how Malhotra is in real life. So if you are forty plus and decide to go and buy a Manish Malhotra outfit, this is what happens. You then have an age you can deserve. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel met the man who doesn't design clothes, but dreams...because he doesn't do fashion, he is fashion.
Difficult Career
The career of Fashion isn't difficult. Initially, when we came into movies, there was payment problem and shooting delays. Designers back then didn't ask for the script too. When we started out, we used to design outfits to hide their body flaws and that's what a true designer is, one who can hide the negative and show the positive. I was really bad in my studies and the only thing I've loved in my life was films. And if you love something, you don't feel the pain. I love my career and I don't think it's difficult or a pain. It has become a part of my life now.
Punit Malhotra
I Hate LUV Storys is like my own film. I feel really close to it because when Punit had the germ of the story in place, I knew it would be a good product, a good film. I think he is a good director and in times, I'm sure he'll turn out to be a great director. What I knew about Punit is the fact that he is very clear minded director, and that, in the industry are very few. The film is a rom-com and it sticks to that. Punit has assisted Karan for nearly ten years now and this was the right time for him to start off with his own film. I was the one who wanted Imran and Sonam to be paired in the film. Punit went to them and convinced them to act in the film and the rest is in front of you. I am not sympathising with Punit because I know that he has to work hard to pull it off.
Robot & Ra.One
There is only one song left to be shot for Robot and that's it. As far as Ra.One is concerned; it is very different from Robot, even though both are sci-fi movies. In Robot, I've dressed up both Rajnikant and Aishwarya. She is seen wearing a saree, jeans, tribal outfit and ghaghra, etc. It was full paisa vasool (laughs). Whereas in Ra.One, I've only dressed up Kareena. I don't find it difficult to dress up these actors be it any genre of film. It is challenging because it's a different character each time. It's more important to dress people up keeping in mind the time, the audience, etc. The challenge is to think what the younger mind would think and what people will go for.
Sonam Kapoor
She is Anil Kapoor's daughter. She is a fashion freak. She wears Stella McCartney, Balenciaga, Armani, etc. Her earlier films had her draped in Indian clothes. In I Hate LUV Storys, she plays an art director. My whole take on her was that all boys had to relate to her role. The feeling of 'I want to take her out for coffee' and 'I want to date her' should come from looking at Sonam. That's what I did with her. It doesn't happen right now with her because she is up there. I had to underplay her in this film. All this was exciting.
Anjaana Anjaani
I have designed for Priyanka Chopra in Anjaana Anjaani. She is from New York and a lot of the film, almost the entire film, has been shot in winter. It's a winter look but yet a girly look.
Film on Manish Malhotra
Not at all. People think that twenty years is a good enough time to make a film on Manish Malhotra, it's not happening. There is so much more to do. As of now, I don't have anything to say on this.
Manish Malhotra store in London
It's not easy. As a designer, I'm creative. That's the business aspect of me. For international labels, they have a huge company backing these designers. If I am asked to be a business man which is not my call, I will somehow shift focus from my designing. Till I don't get a company who understands my business and in general, I will not open any retail outlet in the U.K. You never know what comes up. May be after this interview, someone might come up to me with an offer and a wine on the table (laughs).
Affordability
Designer outfits are expensive, agree. Manish Malhotra outfits are evening wears and I don't do pret. I do diffusion and couture. I sympathise with the people who want to buy a normal outfit which is affordable. I did start that a few years ago but it didn't work because for that you need mass production and a huge set up. I am not saying that I am a brand which is easily available.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 9 Jun 2010 | 6:32 am Salim-Sulaiman will be performing at Nelson Mandela Smile Foundation Concert
