Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 8 Jun 2010 | 7:02 am Star Wars' maker shines at CGTExpo 2010
Indian animation, visual effects and gaming convention festival and convention, CGTEXPO 2010 was as grand an affair just like the previous editions. Held at the Nehru Science Centre in Mumbai, the event had a grand run with organiser R.K. Chand and team roping in international studios like LucasFilms Singapore to share their success formulae!
Seema Gopalakrishnan, who has worked on the legendary television series Star Wars: Clone Wars represented LucasFilms.
âThe biggest challenge in Star Wars: Clone Wars was maintaining the numerous characters in the huge sets that took part in the battles. Another part besides the characters are as you've seen are a lot of ships these ships have a lot of detail and a lot of mechanisms. There are a lot of battles where characters are cut with the light-sabers the slice tool plug-in is super smart, wherein animators can choose how to cut a character mesh in half,â shared Seema.
Visual effects work the magic for Bollywood
You might not have really noticed them, but the visual effects in a film, could make or break box-office fortunes. Take Drona for example, or Love Story 2050 which were rejected by the audience despite a lot of jazzy visual effects. While the same effects helped in making hit films like My Name Is Khan a visual spectacle.
Visual effects is not just about adding color to particular shots or enabling high on the adrenaline action sequences. At the recently held convention CGTExpo 2010, Vishal from TATA ELXSI VCL, explained the market, âWe've got a division that deals with live action and feature film work, and we have a small division that deals with animated movies. We did an animated movie called Roadside Romeo that released in 2008 which was well received by a lot of people but was not a big commercial success.â
âOn the visual effects side we do vfx for films the last big budgeted film that we did was a movie called Prince released by TIPS, it was good fun to work on and very visual effects intensive, in all the shots that we've done, most of it was shot in South Africa. In all there were about 1500 vfx shots that were delivered in just three months.â
The studio is working on an animation film, Arjun, which is scheduled to release this September.
In-house R&D for VFX Studios
CGTExpo 2010 had a lot for the Indian Film post-production professional. Jigesh Gajjar, of MPC London, the post production studio that has worked on Prince of Persia and The Clash of the Titans. Currently the studio is working on the third installation of Narnia
He said that the main disadvantage of doing R&D in-house are that the producers are not happy if in a deadline of six months you go for four months of R&D. The two main areas are R&D for effects and better visual quality and the pipeline asset management that's really the key for the larger projects.
MPC developed, various in-house tools for films like Troy, The Kingdom of Heaven, Poseidon, 10,000 BC and Narnia: Prince Caspian. Beside, in the cult movie, Watchmen all the explosions, were done using a proprietary system, Papi, short for physics based EPI simulation.
Jigesh said, âThe commercial department relies on the film department to run all R&D and we pass the information on any of the shows that we've worked on for free. People focus on using the developed tools whilst developing it further, to avoid unnecessary expenditure in research.â
The story behind 3D
When we sit on the plush comfortable sofas, dark glasses and all, ready to see the latest 3D film at a screen near us, we do not think about all that goes into making the visual spectacle possible. Be it Monsters Vs Aliens, Avatar or Shrek 4, or the soon expected Jism 2, all these films are made three dimensional by a set of erudite technicians working day and night on the latest technologies in film production.
Los Angeles based Eliza Pelham Randall's career spans across seventeen years working in visual effects both in production as well as post. Based in Los Angeles she has worked with renowned VFX studios such as The Mill, R!OT, Frantic films and now Prime Focus. Currently she resides in Mumbai on her second Indian assignment supervising stereoscopic 3D conversion for Prime Focus. She spoke at the recently held CGTExpo 2010 in Mumbai.
âTaking films in 2D and converting it 3D is exciting. Prime Focus has a huge organization across many continents and that's how with our sheer force we managed to push The Clash of the Titans in eight weeks, and in the process we learned a lot,â she said.
James Cameron's Avatar had the luxury of time at their hands, this entitled them to plan it out thoroughly as compared to the different path that we had. The majority of the work that Prime Focus is engaged in does not grant this kind of luxury of time.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 8 Jun 2010 | 6:57 am Dia Mirza chosen as brand ambassador for Panasonic?

That the legendary actor Anupam Kher is someone who started his career at a young age in a rather unconventional way playing an old man in the award winning Saaransh, is now a thing of the past. In a career spanning for close to three decades, this man has risen from being a no one to being a 'No. One'. Just a few days back, he was in the news for being conferred the prestigious Sri Lankan Presidential Award for his immense contribution to the Indian cinema.
The man is back again and how! This time round, he is on a mission... a mission to make the Gen-Next kids to know more and more about our country India, through his interactive quiz format show 'Discover India With Anupam Kher'. Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, Anupam says, "It's very important to mix entertainment with education, especially for the kids, who needs to know a lot about the richness of our country and my show 'Discover India' fulfils all of that and much more. It's going to be very, very interactive thing on a lot of platforms like mobile, internet and television, which will be on a later date. We already had a trail run of this quiz in various schools and the response has been truly phenomenal. The entire quizzing sessions will get fully activated within a month from now. And the best part of the whole thing is that I will not have to be physically present to conduct the quiz. I have already recorded my questions on a DVD. My team will go to the schools and record the responses (answers) on the spot. The same can be played on internet, mobile and normal phones."
When we asked him about the transition from being a host in 'Say Na Something To Anupam Uncle' to 'Discover India with Anupam Kher', he says, "Say Na... was an innocently cute show about children, their parents and the relationship with each other. Whereas, 'Discover India' will make children feel proud of our country and its richness."
"The whole thing has been conceptualized on a different level altogether. It will give every kid millions of reasons to smile and feel proud to be an Indian. If one has to look at present scenario, the situation is that all of us know who the singer is or the music composer is of a particular song, but the same cannot be said about our country. We still have a long way to go to know more about our motherland. And this show will definitely help everyone to truly 'Discover India' and it's rich and varied culture," Kher signs off.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 8 Jun 2010 | 3:24 am Ragini Dwivedi to debut in MalayalamKannada film industry is probably going to lose one of its most talented actresses to Malayalam films. Source: Entertainment - Google News | 8 Jun 2010 | 3:10 am "I want to do more Bollywood films" - Sarah Thompson
One more Caucasian beauty is all set to try her luck in Bollywood. Sarah Thompson, who plays Ranbir Kapoor's American girlfriend in Raajneeti, seems completely smitten by him.
She says that she's all set to make her move from the US to Bollywood and has hired herself a Hindi tutor. "When I started working on Raajneeti, I knew no Hindi. That was okay. I had to play a girl who doesn't know any Hindi and all I had to do was mutter a smattering of bad Hindi."
But now Sarah has got herself a Hindi teacher. "I want to make a career in Bollywood. For that I need to know the language. So I got myself a teacher. Ab mujhe Hindi bolne aati hai."
She gushes, "I love India and love Indian films. Mumbai reminds me of New York. The same energy and bustle, and now I want to be part of it."
This is Sarah's third visit to India. "I came the first time to India to shoot in Bhopal for Raajneeti and then I came to dub for the film. Now I'm back for the release, and I'm nervous and anxious, yeah! I want to do more Bollywood films, and yes I am shifting to Mumbai."
This time, Sarah has come laden with a wish-list of Bollywood directors she wants to work with. "I want to meet Vishal Bharadwaj and Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra. In fact, I am meeting Rakeysh Mehra shortly .I saw Rang De Basanti and I said to myself, 'Why couldn't I have played the British girl in the film?' I've seen Vishal Bharadwaj's Kaminey twice. He's another Bollywood director I really want to work with."
Sarah admits she had not heard of Prakash Jha when he offered her the role in Raajneeti. "But when I met him and he narrated the role of Ranbir Kapoor's American girlfriend to me, I knew I had to do it. He gave me his Gangaajal and Apaharan to watch. And that's how I was introduced to a totally new facet of Bollywood. Before watching Prakashji's films, I thought Bollywood meant singing and dancing. Here was a gritty realistic cinema that I certainly wanted to be part of."
The starry-eyed, but grounded young actress says she has links with India. "My parents have visited India many times, not just short touristic sightseeing visits, but lengthy exploratory trips. Our home is filled with an aura and souvenirs from India .Me and my two sisters grew up hearing fascinating stories about India."
Sarah says she has her parent's blessings in making a career in Bollywood. "If I do manage to make a career here, my parents would be the happiest. Yes, I do miss them when I am in India. Hopefully, when I shift, they'd come and visit me in Mumbai. I love Mumbai, just by roaming around places like the Colaba Causeway, I feel so much at home."
As part of her background research for Raajneeti, Sarah read up as much as she could on the internet on Indian politics. She was also made to watch Saawariyaa by Prakash Jha to understand her co-star's acting style.
And Sarah was hooked!
"Before working with Ranbir, I had seen only Saawariyaa and thought he was outstanding. Then, when we reached Bhopal, Katrina and Prakashji took me to watch Wake Up Sid. And I was like... oh my God! When I met Ranbir, the first thing that I blurted was how much I liked him in Wake Up Sid. Then I watched all his films. That's how good I found him."
The American girl in Bollywood just can't stop raving about Ranbir. "Ranbir really took good care of me. He made me feel so comfortable. Not even for a minute did I feel like an outsider. If I've decided to make a career in Hindi cinema, it's because of Ranbir and Prakashji, who never let me feel like an outsider."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 8 Jun 2010 | 3:03 am After Vedam Anushka waits for PanchakshariThe most busiest actress of South India, Anushka Shetty has cleared a test in Vedam, but the more serious concern for cine-goers is whether she can do the same in Panchakshari, where she plays the protagonist. Director Mani Shankar and producer Sohail Maklai are ready with their new film KNOCK OUT, which stars Sanjay Dutt, Irrfan and Kangna Ranaut in key roles. The makers showcased a number of promos of this keenly-awaited film at IIFA in Colombo, which was well-received by all those who watched it. Initially, the film was supposed to hit the screens in August, but the makers have decided to bring the film on September 10, since another Sanju starrer, LAMHAA, is all set to arrive on July 16. And a two-month gap between two Sanju starrers is a step in the right direction. However, a number of films are slated for release on September 10, besides KNOCK OUT. These include DABANGG and AAKROSH.
While on KNOCK OUT, the promos give an impression that the makers seem inspired by Hollywood film PHONE BOOTH, which has been a favourite of many a film-maker. "I wish to clarify that there's no similarity between PHONE BOOTH and KNOCK OUT. The only similarity is that the guy [Irrfan] is trapped in a phone booth, but the similarity starts and ends there. KNOCK OUT tells an entirely new story," Mani Shankar says.
It's good to see Sanju enacting diamterically opposite roles in LAMHAA and KNOCK OUT. The actor, who has completed 30 years in showbiz, is playing his age in these two films and if the promos of these films are an indicator, 2010 could well prove to be the turning point in his career.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 8 Jun 2010 | 1:05 am All's well between Nana and Prakash Jha

Surprisingly, Nana hasn't watched the film yet, at least till the day the film opened. "Main kahan apni filmein dekhta hoon? In the year 1994, producer-director Mehul Kumar gave us the hard-hitting film Krantiveer starring Nana Patekar and Dimple Kapadia. The film went on to become a smash-hit at the B.O. and now 16 years later, Mehul Kumar is ready with the sequel titled Krantiveer-The Revolution.
The film is extra special as it marks the debut of Mehul Kumar's daughter Jahan Bloch who plays the role of a fiery young journalist in the film. If the promos of the film are anything to go by, Jahan surely seems to be an actress to watch out for in the days to come. Bollywood Hungama gives you a chance to participate in a live Video Chat with Jahan Bloch on Tuesday, Jun 8, at 1500 hrs IST. Don't miss!Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 7 Jun 2010 | 7:05 am Live Chat: Arjun Rampal on June 9 at 1500 Hrs IST
If there is a requirement for a tall, dark and handsome dude, then, there are millions and trillions of men out there. But if at all there is requirement for a tall, dark and handsome dude with an attitude, talents (oodles of them), then, there is just one, one and only one out there. He is none other than the guy whom we all know as Arjun Rampal.
After having made his debut with the film Moksha, Arjun went onto become one of the most grandeur pillars of Bollywood. His journey to superstardom was not an overnight one. He has achieved this status step by step. These 'steps' include the likes of Aankhen , Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Don - The Chase Begins Again, Om Shanti Om, Rock On!! and the recently declared smash hit Raajneeti.
Guys, here's your chance to chat live with the supercool man of Bollywood: Arjun Rampal, only on Bollywood Hungama Celeb Chat on June 9 at 1500 Hrs IST.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 7 Jun 2010 | 7:00 am "I Hate LUV Storys is told from a guy's perspective" - Imran Khan
Apart from his good looks, golden boy image and reputation, Imran Khan comes across as the most un-star-like of film stars. Imran is now in the enviable position for Indian actors of being able to choose his roles, with a bit of perfection I suppose. And the fact that he is only known by his first film's success, this young protege has a lot on his shoulders at this present moment. First up - he needs a big commercial boomerang. Second - he needs to believe and fall in love again. Get that??? Thanks to Sonam Kapoor, we are sure she'll be of much help and assistance to get him back on track. With just less than a month left for the release of I Hate LUV Stories, UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent chats up with the man who thinks that love sucks and so does Bollywood. If you're a smart alec, you'll get it. For the time being, you ponder. Over to the sucker for films.
You hate love stories?
I don't. But my character in the film does (laughs). He hates the idea of love and romance. Yes, I have grown up watching love stories and we all have. So there is no way I will ever hate any love story. In the film, my idea and Sonam's idea clash over what love is. She never tries to justify why she likes love stories. I have my point of view and she has hers. It's like two people who are working together think differently. As a result of us spending time together and being together, Sonam changed my opinion on love and I changed hers.
Karan is getting younger with each film, isn't he? And more real too.
It's a Dharma Production film and Karan has always believed in putting the best and giving the best to his team. When Karan made Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, it was considered to be very cool. He somehow got the cutting edge to his films. Karan wants his films to look cool, young and fresh and that's what we took lobbying to. It has Manish Malhotra designing the outfits for the film. A two decade experienced designer will put his best foot forward. That's a challenge. Punit and I are on one end of the spectrum and Manish is on the other end. So we try and balance each other out (laughs). Manish would get all the best outfits for us and some expensive designer jeans and Punit and I would rip it off. That made it even more real.
Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 7 Jun 2010 | 4:59 am "Shooting with Esha was very emotional experience" - Dharmendra
Dharmendra has just finished shooting with his daughter Esha Deol for the first time in Hema Malini's home production Tell Me Oh Khuda. And he just can't get over her confidence level in front of the camera.
Dharamji who went straight from shooting with his daughter in Goa to shooting with his two sons Sunny and Bobby in Indore, recalls how intimidated Sunny was when he had to share screen space with his imposing father in Sultanat. Esha on the other hand showed absolutely no fear or nervousness in being seen with her legendary father.
Dharmendra saw his daughter act for the first time. And so impressed is he that he now wants to produce a film for her. Says the emotional father, "Working with one's children is always an emotional experience. While shooting with Esha I was doubly emotional since this was the first time I saw her acting, and that too with me."
Dharmendra says he couldn't say no to an offer to work with Esha. "I did it for her. One can never say no to one's children. Esha is very gifted. I felt very proud watching her in front of the camera. I also got a chance to meet up with my colleagues Rishi (Kapoor) and Vinod (Khanna) after a long time. So Goa was very enjoyable."
While working with Esha for the first time was a breeze, working with Hema Malini again after so many years seems to make the superstar somewhat uncomfortable. There's a role in Tell Me Oh Khuda of Esha's mom which, Esha wants Hema Malini to do.
Dharamji is not too sure of how audiences would accept the golden couple of the 1970s and 80s who were last seen together in Jaan Hatheli Pe, 22 years ago.
Says Dharmendra shyly, "There's a role for her. Let's see if she does it or not. If people want to see us together again, it would have to be that way."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 7 Jun 2010 | 4:15 am Dia Mirza glows her way through in Hair
