Source: Yahoo! News: Entertainment News | 3 Jun 2010 | 11:58 pm Industry Roundup: Renner Joins Avengers, Brett Ratner Behind 'Modernized' Snow White![]() Marvel-ous: Jeremy Renner is in final negotiations to join The Avengers, Joss Whedon’s big screen portrayal of the superhero team's adventures. Renner will play Hawkeye, a bow-and-arrow-toting hero, in a role that “while key, is not starring in nature,” allowing him to star in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Scientology drama if that delayed project materializes. The film features an all-star cast of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Don Cheadle as War Machine. Looks like Renner's as good at misdirecting the press as he is at defusing bombs. [Heat Vision/HR] New Spin On Snow: Relativity has acquired Melisa Wallack’s script of The Brothers Grimm: Snow White which the studio plans to develop as a “modernized spin” on the fairy tale (in 3D, of course). Brett Ratner is on as one of the producers for the project, which co-producer Bernie Goldmann described as follows: "While retaining the elements of the beloved Brothers Grimm tale, this is certainly not your mother's Snow White." Which probably means Justin Bieber will be cast as the prince. [Variety] Playing 'Dum': Neal McDonough is in negotiations to join the cast of Captain America: The First Avenger, starring Chris Evans as the Captain. McDonough, who joins Sebastian Stan, Hayley Atwell and Hugo Weaving in the film, will be playing “Dum Dum” Dugan, a member of an elite squad of soldiers who battle Nazis alongside Captain America. Let's hope the character doesn’t have any sex scenes. [Variety] Entering Treatment: Amy Ryan has joined the cast of the upcoming third season of HBO’s In Treatment. She will play the new therapist for Gabriel Byrne’s Paul Weston. While this is probably a great part and all (Dianne Wiest, who played Weston’s therapist the first two seasons, won an Emmy for the role), we must admit there’s another TV show we’d rather see Ryan sign on for. [Deadline] Starz Align: Joseph Fiennes and Eva Green have joined Starz’ "re-telling" of Camelot. Fiennes will star as the wizard Merlin, while Green will play the sorceress Morgana. Jamie Campbell Bower and Tamsin Egerton will play King Arthur and Guinevere in the series, which will consist of 10 episodes and debut in early 2011. After the demise of FlashForward, probably makes sense Fiennes would leap in the opposite temporal direction. [Live Feed/HR] Abducted: Sigourney Weaver will star opposite Taylor Lautner and Lily Collins in Abduction, which will begin filming in July. Weaver will play the psychiatrist of Lautner’s character, who discovers his own baby picture on a missing persons website. With the news, Weaver's daughter suddenly has new summer plans. [Variety] Yeah!: Yeasayer has been touring nonstop since their Odd Blood was released earlier this year. And now they’ve announced a new series of U.S. dates this fall, which will come after European and Australian runs. So now you have more chances to see your favorite band live. [Pitchfork] His Way: Radiohead drummer Phil Selway has a solo album of “folk ballad-type tunes” coming out August 30. Called Familial, the album will feature Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche and former Soul Coughing bassist Sebastian Steinberg, as well other guests - though, despite the album's title, his (Radiohead) family will apparently not be among them. [Pitchfork] In Bloom: TV director Randall Einhorn has been picked to helm Late Bloomer, the story of a man who went through puberty in three weeks. Based on Ken Baker’s 2001 book Man Made: A Memoir, the story follows Baker’s struggle with a benign tumor that resulted in his hitting puberty at the age of 27, at which point he experienced “all the effects of puberty over an extremely condensed three-week period” "Extremely condensed" is most definitely an understatement here. This amount accounts for 75 percent of the money BP owes the government, and the company has until July 1 to pony it up, a White House official said. The Obama administration will be billing BP regularly for costs related to the spill, according to the task force managing the spill response; the way things have been going, BP may as well just set up monthly automatic payments. For everyone else though, uhhh... not so much. This modern day adaptation of the classic 1726 Jonathan Swift story features Jack Black as a Gulliver who digs Star Wars, loves to write, and pines after Amanda Peet (who, because this is a Jack Black movie, seems to reciprocate his feelings). The shots we get of Lilliput (where, presumably, most of the movie will take place) feature glimpses of Jason Segel and Emily Blunt (who - though she doesn’t say a word - seems like she’s spliced in from a different, far superior movie), as well as a lot of Giant Jack Black, in scenarios that look to be awfully broad and slapstick. This all being said, if the thought of Giant Jack Black doing cartwheels and fist-pumping tiny humans has you in stitches, then December 22 will probably be your happiest day since Year One came out. Online (US) - Top Stories | 3 Jun 2010 | 5:15 pm Hollywood Loves a Good F&%#ing Title![]() When it comes to brainstorming movie titles, Hollywood tends to fall in love with certain words: Impact, Extreme, Deep, Desperate. But recently writers, producers, and studios have become enamored with putting a word on the front page of their scripts that they know has mass appeal: “Fuck.” Paramount Pictures is currently filming Fuckbuddies, a Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher comedy. The same studio is also developing the spec I Want to Fuck Your Sister, a comedy about a lothario who attempts to defend his sister from guys who are, well, just like him. And last week, a thriller script called Revenge Fuck started making the rounds. The thought is that a screenplay emblazoned with a four-letter word will really stick out in the slush pile. Although the gambit is not without its risks. Here are four, one for every letter. 1. All Profanity is Temporary. Any buzz you might spark from the news that you have greenlit a naughty new movie will be undone when you inevitably have to change the title for release. NPR’s All Things Considered recently bleeped out the title of the upcoming Paul Rudd/Steve Carell comedy Dinner with Schmucks; if the media are censoring Yiddish naughtyisms, do you think they’ll stand for English ones? I Want to Fuck Your Sister has already been retitled I Want to ____ Your Sister. (Prudes can pretend the blank stands for “Help”!) And while the title “Fuckbuddies” may have helped get its announcement some press, it’s now likely going to be released as Friends with Benefits. Will people who remembered its original title even recognize it under its new one? Maybe you’re better off just starting off censored rather than waiting it out: The upcoming Jessica Biel indie comedy about a young couple who vow to have sex every day until their wedding to avoid falling into the sexless marriage of their parents was called F***ing Engaged from the onset. 2) Spam filters Won’t Play Ball. While Revenge Fuck, a spec script by writer/director Jessica Sharzer, has been getting some heavy petting from a few major studio producers since it was sent out last week, it had some coitus interruptus trying to find its way into their hands. “I had to take the letter ‘u’ out of the title, because some servers have been seeing it as spam,” explains Gersh Agency agent David Kopple, who disseminated the screenplay. “Intended recipients weren’t getting the script. Even Jessica's manager wasn’t getting an email I’d sent with the subject line, ‘Revenge Fuck submission list’. We're having a breakdown in communication.” Read more posts by Claude Brodesser-Akner Filed Under: the industry, fuckbuddies, movies, profanity Source: Vulture | 3 Jun 2010 | 5:00 pm Lindsay Lohan's Parents Agree on One Thing (Well, Two Actually) We wouldn't go so far as to call Michael and Dina Lohan's steadily thawing relationship heartwarming—but at least they can converse like adults now.

My Dad Says, CBS’s adaptation of Justin Halpern’s awesome Twitter of the same (pre-censorship) name starring William Shatner as a snappy curmudgeon? You should probably not be! While we generally hate to rush to judgment, it's sort of unavoidable: The show’s new trailer does just a remarkable job of making this seem like a terrible mistake. There’s a cornucopia of options when it comes to complaints to lodge, so we’ll stick to the big one: Apparently, the writers have opted not to use cleaned up versions of the hilarious shit Halpern’s dad actually says as material for zingers and plotlines in favor of writing all new, generally unfunny material. (This is the best line from the trailer: “Son, sit down, the house is clean enough we didn’t accidentally kill a hooker, we had dinner.”) Then again, CBS did just get to break the “first network to promote a show by using the phrase 'based on the Twitter sensation'” barrier, so maybe it was all worth it. Source: Best Week Ever | 3 Jun 2010 | 3:58 pm ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’: The Technicalities of Repeal![]() Obama at a Human Rights Campaign event last fall, where he promised to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Last Thursday, an amendment repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was attached to the annual defense-authorization bill, which then went on to pass the House (the Senate’s likely to vote mid-month). But amid all the hoopla over finally making progress on overturning the seventeen-year ban on open service by gay troops, one aspect of the repeal measure went largely unnoticed: the lack of a nondiscrimination mandate. What that means is, if or when DADT is dismantled — which can’t happen until next year, as the amendment allows an ongoing Pentagon review of the policy to conclude first (it's expected to end in December) — there’ll be no legal mechanism to prevent anti-gay discrimination. Leading activists like Aubrey Sarvis, head of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, have said they’ll push President Obama to issue an executive order banning discrimination — but as it turns out, an executive order already exists that does just that. In 1998, President Clinton added sexual orientation to a longstanding executive order barring discrimination in the federal workforce, except where prohibited by law. According to attorney Richard Socarides, a Clinton-era White House adviser, this executive order should apply when the DADT law is officially off the books. "When the federal statute is repealed, if you read that executive order and give it a plain meaning, it's going to apply to the military," Socarides says. "But I would still urge President Obama to make it perfectly clear by amending that executive order again" to specifically prohibit discrimination against gay troops. Likewise, Pentagon regulations will have to incorporate explicit nondiscrimination language. "That's going to be essential in order to carry repeal out," Socarides adds. "It's also important from a leadership perspective that Gates and Mullen send a clear message on this: that it's the right thing to do and it's consistent with the values of the institution." While Socarides dismisses as unlikely any scenario in which a future, less LGBT-friendly president removes sexual orientation from the standing executive order — "we're on a path that's destiny, and it would be hard to go back" — it's nonetheless a legal possibility that some other gay advocates fear. "Nondiscrimination is at the core of what we're fighting for, and having given that up as the cornerstone of this compromise was probably an unnecessary concession," Socarides observes. "And certainly an unfortunate one." News: Entertainment Reviews | 3 Jun 2010 | 3:38 pm MTV’s New Big Penis Show Doesn’t Understand High-School Popularity![]() On Sunday night, MTV will begin airing The Hard Times of RJ Berger, a show about a nerdy teenager barely surviving at a high school ruled by evil jocks, who, in the first episode, arrives at a turning point. During an on-the-basketball-court pantsing incident, it is revealed that RJ has an enormous penis. “Nature made me scrawny and weird looking,” he tells us. “But it also gave me a gift.” RJ’s large wang reaps immediate dividends: girls begin paying him attention, dudes are more respectful. “Here I am, looking for our golden ticket,” RJ’s best friend tells him, “and it's been draped over your balls this whole time.” Now, we enjoy an oversize penis joke as much as the next person who laughs at jokes that have been made a million times, but not when they are based on a faulty premise: In high school, an enormous penis is not a “golden ticket.” It is a mildly interesting, sometimes embarrassing anatomical fact likely to have limited effect on your social life. This is because, apologies to RJ Berger and his wet dreams, high-school girls do not care very much about penis size. Certainly they do not care enough to start (or stop) crushing on someone because his junk has been described as a “Buick Regal.” Yes, there may be high-school girls who only sext with boys who are confirmed packers. There are, after all, people who do vodka shots through their eyeballs. But just as guzzling vodka with large quantities of orange juice is still more common among teenagers than the eye-shot method of inebriation, not caring very much about the penis size of the awkward, gangly, pimply 15-year-old boy sitting next to you in Algebra class is still more common than caring that it’s big. If owing to, say, a random pantsing incident, a high-school student were made aware of the fact that this same 15-year-old had a big Johnson, she might be interested in this information — but would she suddenly, like some pubescent Samantha, prefer him to all the other less gangly, pimply 15-year-olds, and her super-popular, jock boyfriend? No. Look, even Serena Van Der Woodsen has never expressed an interest in penis size, and she is to regular high-school girls what bonobo monkeys are to asexually reproducing bacteria. Furthermore, imagine for a second that a super nerd got pantsed at a high-school basketball game. Would it matter that he had a big penis? Of course not — everyone would be laughing way too hard to notice its size anyway. High-school students don't pay attention to social outcasts, and they don't start when those social outcasts are publicly humiliated. Getting pantsed would be a terrible thing for RJ, even with the giant penis reveal, because (1) no one in high school likes people who are different and (2) everyone would immediately start calling him "No Pants," not "Big Cock." RJ Berger's obvious antecedents, Boogie Nights and Hung, only make Berger's premise seen weirder. Yes, Dirk Diggler, Ray Drecker, and RJ’s large penises all seem to help them make a better life for themselves, but Diggler is a porn star and Drecker is a prostitute. This is not who we hope RJ Berger grows up to be, right? A man whose big penis is his only talent? High school has been compared to a lot of dreadful things, but not yet the sex industry! RJ Berger aspires to be a scatological and sweet high-school show (described appealingly by one of the cast members as “Superbad meets the Wonder Years”). The longer clips from it suggest that MTV may be overhyping the outsize-penis angle for publicity, so it’s possible that after the establishing incident, the show will be less about a well-hung adolescent and more about a plain old adolescent. We hope so. Because seriously, RJ, cheerleaders don’t care that much about your junk. Source: Yahoo! News: Entertainment Reviews | 3 Jun 2010 | 2:25 pm “Glee” Episode Written By Same Monkeys Who Penned “Hamlet” Finally AirsTwo weeks ago, I was dropping $1.29 left and right downloading new Glee tracks that had become available on Itunes. One of which… was this: It is difficult to describe the intense, gutteral reaction I have to hearing this song come up on my Ipod, but let’s allow this GIF to do the talking:
This week’s Glee, entitled “Funk,” featured the above song “Give Up The Funk,” a song whose first 30 seconds makes me want to grapefruit spoon my ear insides out for breaky lunch and dindin. Now, usually when Glee features musical suicide at some point in the show, they balance it with a slew of other great tunes. But not “Funk.” Nope. Here are the songs performed in the episode — which you can watch in one easily digestible clip at the end of this post: “Loser” (Horrible); “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)” (Suicidally bad); “Good Vibrations” (Unforgivably bad); “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” (Worst lip-sync in the history of the show); “Another One Bites the Dust” (As a fan of Queen, Jonathan Groff, and queens, I enjoyed this); “Tell Me Something Good” (One of two songs I could actually stand in this episode. Because as much as I try to deny it, I just can’t resist the glut vibrations of Mr. Schuester. If he gets nominated for an Emmy, you can thank the clenching at :29): OK, but let’s just say for a moment that the music in this episode would have been amazing. Then what? Would the show have been any better? No. Because it was actually written by the same monkeys who threw Hamlet together. First of all, the idea that Jesse would dump Rachel so cruelly, so simply, reeked of lazy writing — not completely unlike this recap. Mr. Schuester trying to woo Sue, no matter for what, is inexcusable. Mercedes inviting Quinn to live with her? AM I IN AN ALTERNATE F_CKING UNIVERSE? Yes, I know part of the fun of Glee is that it ranges from cheesily terrible to hilarious fun and terrible, but this episode was just bad any way you slice it. Even Mr. Schuester’s butt clenching could not drag this hour of my life back to shore. There really isn’t much else to say, other than I think I’d rather take Schue rapping than listen to the first 7 seconds of “Give Up The Funk.” And if you know me, you know it ws very hard to admit that. Here are all the musical performances in one neat little Youtube clip, if you missed them: Source: Best Week Ever | 3 Jun 2010 | 2:15 pm Times Sends Journal Cease-and-Desist Letter![]() There's something so wonderfully childish about the skirmish between The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times over the past few months. First, the Journal decided to be a copycat with its own New York section. Then, the Times ran a bunch of ads saying, "I know you are, but what am I?" (Rich, attractive, and white, that's what!) The Times stole one of the Journal's girlfriends, then the Journal got a new girlfriend right away and said she was better than the stupid original girlfriend, anyway. Then, to top it all off, the Journal called the Times a girl, and when the Times sorta complained about it, the Journal told the Times to "get a life." It's all so charming! But now, things are getting serious. We're back to copycatting, of course. As part of the juvenile squabble, both papers have been running catty advertising campaigns (seen the Journal's ads saying they are "ahead of the times" on the subway lately?). Except the Journal's latest effort, a house ad with the text: "Not Just Wall Street. Every Street," is a word-for-word copy of a recent Times ad. "While we are flattered by your admiration of our marketing efforts, please note that The Times owns the trademark rights in the Slogan and your brazen appropriation of our intellectual property rights constitutes a willful infringement and dilution of The Times's rights," wrote Times lawyer Richard Samson in a cease-and-desist letter dated today. "We hereby demand that you immediately cease and desist from further use of the Slogan. Please provide us with written confirmation that you have done so within three (3) days of receipt of this letter. If we have not heard from you within three (3) business days of receipt of this letter, we will have no choice but to pursue all available legal remedies." We've asked the Journal for comment, and they haven't gotten back to us quite yet. However, if we were them, our response might be something like: "Miss Susie has a steamboat, the steamboat has a bell. Source: Yahoo! News: Entertainment Reviews | 3 Jun 2010 | 11:36 am New Dinner For Schmucks TrailerWe’ve been hit with a new Dinner For Schmucks trailer! Despite the awful title, it looks funny in a terrible destruction/embarrassment sort of way, in keeping with Meet The Parents, which makes sense because it’s the same director. My only problem is that no one in life would act like any character in this trailer, except for the corporate a-holes. Maybe. But then again, no one would act like Ben Stiller in Meet The Parents and, well, most comedies ever made. For example, no one would form a team of Ghostbusters (that might not be true). Also, we have no need for a team of Ghostbusters (yet). My quibbles are for naught, I’m sure.
