Satish Kaushik - After Brick Lane, will he forever remain Pappu Pager?

Satish Kaushik In the world of journalism, a first person account of affairs is pretty much considered as blasphemous (well in most of the cases). However, after watching Brick Lane, I couldn't resist doing so. A major reason behind doing so is the fact that the write up which is going to follow isn't a review per se. It is the experience of watching the film as a viewer, without wearing the hat of someone who is required to critically deconstruct it. Honestly, the first thought that came in my mind after watching a couple of scenes featuring Satish Kaushik, the leading man in Brick Lane was - 'Is he the same person who has been immortalised as 'Pappu Pager'? Or 'Calendar'? Or 'Mutthuswami'? And for those select few who may be unfamiliar with these character names, they are from the films Deewana Mastana, Mr. India and Saajan Chale Sasural respectively, three of the biggest successes of Satish Kaushik as an actor. So why are references being brought to these films? Because each of them has been comedies and more than 90% of the characters enacted by Satish Kaushik in his 75 films and 30 years of acting experience have been comic. No wonder, it is a revelation of sorts to see him into a different zone altogether when he plays the role of a middle aged lower middle class Bangladeshi who is searching for dignity in a foreign land - UK - as seen in Brick Lane. As someone who is semi-educated, doesn't quite have perfect command over English despite being in the land of Queen for decades, is yet to settle down in life, isn't quite the perfect husband for his wife (Tannishtha Chatterjee) but has his heart in the right place when it comes to taking a stand on religion, Kauhsik is (surprisingly) restrained. He carries the kind of command which one expects from a seasoned actor and though one never doubted his standing as a comic actor, a different side of his personality does make one stand up and notice. Satish Kaushik A role like the kind seen in Brick Lane where he is selfish to the core of having sex with his wife rather than caring about making love, mildly hitting his teenage daughter in due course of an argument and having his chauvinist attitude pretty much apparent by being unhappy about her choosing to work could easily have taken a negative connotation. In fact that has been the problem for most of the films set in the NRI world where a male protagonist is projected as someone out and out black. Remember Provoked or Videsh? Nothing wrong with a character; after all this is what a film maker may be trying to tell through a story. However, the humane side of a regular protagonist is something that has gone amiss in most of the films belonging to this genre and setting so far. In this regard, Kaushik plays it just right. He keeps it all under control, doesn't make his character looks beastly or ferocious and still makes the suffocation faced by Tannishtha justifiable. No wonder, when she decides to separate from him in due course of time, you feel relieved for her but in turn also quite sympathetic for Kaushik. This is where the writing of Brick Lane and execution by Kaushik comes in handy because nothing quite goes overboard here. Staying on course is not restricted just to the dramatic scenes but also the light moments that are interspersed into the narrative. And by the way, this doesn't happen through humour where actors get into a 'ha-ha-hee-hee' mode. Instead, all of this comes through the character detailing, mainly because of Kaushik who is shown to be living in his own world. Satish Kaushik No wonder, one fine day he thinks of switching over jobs and becoming a cabby, the next day he proudly proclaims that 'soaps are the future' and thinks of starting a business on the same lines, on another day he feels that being a professor is much in demand while on a particular instance, he buys himself a computer because 'this is where the world of knowledge lies'. Frankly, I have seen such characters in real life and hence it was quite easy to identify with someone like Kaushik who keeps juggling between different professions while having a self belief that his dignity would be restored in due course of time. Will the screen name of Chanu Ahmed turn out to be as memorable as 'Pappu Pager', 'Calendar' or 'Mutthuswami'? I strongly suspect that would ever be the case. After all each of these characters has belonged to mainstream films and has been immortalised over decades. On the other hand Chanu is someone who features in an offbeat film like Brick Lane which hasn't even found a proper release in India despite international acclaim. Though there would be hardly any people who may catch this truly different act of Kaushik, in his mind and heart he would indeed be happy enough to have attempted something new and done immense justice to it.

"I call Anil Kapoor Bombay Daddy" - Rana Daggubati

Rana DaggubatiRana Daggubatti who has just completed one schedule in Goa for Rohan Sippy's Dum Maaro Dum started the film's second schedule in Mumbai from June 1. Rana now hopes to make a real connect with Bollywood. "Though I've shot for a Hindi film, I don't feel like a Bollywood actor because we shot it in Goa, and in a totally relaxed atmosphere on the beach. Now in Mumbai I plan to do my liaison work." One of the first people Rana wants to re-connect with in Bollywood is Anil Kapoor. Says the Telugu-going-into-Hindi star, "My father (producer D Suresh Babu) and Mr. Anil Kapoor share the same birthday. I call him 'Bombay Daddy'. I've known him from when I was 5. He used to be in Hyderabad constantly shooting for my grandfather's (D Rama Naidu) films. Strangely I never met Sonam Kapoor until we were both much older. Anil Kapoor and his family are like my family." He's much pleased with his role as a musician in Dum Maaro Dum. After having got himself two coaches on location, at the last minute Rana got himself a new guitar coach. "I had two guitar coaches to make sure I made all the right moves on the strings. But when I was not satisfied with my progress I got the composer Pritam Chakraborty's guitarist Atanu who's from Assam, to teach me the right licks. I think I look like real player." Apparently, Bipasha who co-stars with Rana took a great shine to him. The two got along like a house on fire. Rana admits he had fun. "We were shooting on the beach. Between shots we'd just be lounging around near the water. It was all very calm and soothing. Now in Mumbai we shoot in a studio. Not that I mind. I grew up in studios. I love the smell and the feeling inside studios." After Dum Maaro Dum, Rana returns to Telugu cinema for two films. While one is a home production to be directed by a new director the other directed by Selvaragavan is a huge period film set during the Indus civilization. "So you see I'm quite busy, and I've absolutely no time for a personal life. For this, I blame Rohan Sippy and Selvaragavan."

Aftab Shivdasani's injury puts his sports flick on hold

Aftab Shivdasani Aftab Shivdasani's plans to star in a cricket film has been postponed. It was meant to be a very hush-hush sports film revolving around the game of cricket.Ironically it was a game of cricket that has caused a delay in Aftab's very secret plans to play cricket for his own film. Not only is his ambitious sports film delayed, Aftab Shivdasani who left on Thursday morning for the IIFA in Colombo would have to skip the benefit cricket match because of the hand injury he suffered while playing cricket for Salman Khan's Being Human team in Dubai last week. Wincing in pain Aftab explains, "Thankfully it isn't a fracture. Just a small crack in the bone and soft-tissue damage. But that's painful enough. I've to rest my hand for at least ten days. But I'm off to IIFA, though I can't play the cricket match." Replaying the incident leading to the injury, Aftab says, "I was batting in Dubai against Pakistani actors when I got a beamer. I tried to fend it off with my hand. The ball hit the bone on the side of the palm of my right hand." The pain was so acute that Aftab had to be rushed to the hospital. "It was painful. I went directly from the stadium to the hospital for an x-ray. There it was discovered I have a small crack in the finger. I've to wear a splint for two weeks."

Ajay opens up on diversion of Raajneeti promotions towards Ranbir-Katrina

Ajay Devgn You need to have a couple of conversations with Ajay Devgn before a mutual comfort level sets in. Yes, he has opened up with media but his intrinsic nature still doesn't allow him to go overboard yet (all for the right reasons though). You have to give the man his space, await reactions and probe to an extent that it stays within the zone. On the eve of the release of his much awaited film Raajneeti, Ajay Devgn talks to Joginder Tuteja about the 'event' factor attached to a Prakash Jha film, how it is different from Yuva and his thoughts around the promotion which saw a diversion towards Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. A Prakash Jha film appears to be an event in itself. We have seen it in the past, whether it is Apaharan or Gangaajal. However, in case of Raajneeti, the buzz and hype has scaled an altogether different high. Are we actually looking at a high profile event in the form of Raajneeti? See, Prakash Jha makes films which are realistic and have a strong element of truth to them. However, he has also learnt over a period of time that he has to tell a story in an entertaining manner so that people don't get the sense of a docudrama. He knows how to excite audience and has found that knack. There are very filmmakers who even attempt the kind of films that Prakash Jha makes. This is the reason why when once in a while a film like Raajneeti arrives; it takes the shape of an event. Prakash Jha makes films which are realistic and have a strong element of truth to them Well, in an event like Raajneeti, there are also points where it seems that your character is a take off on what you did in Yuva. Are there any comparison points here? None at all; you can't even think of any comparisons whatsoever. In case of Yuva, the character I played was quite honest. He was trying to get into politics because he wanted to cleanse the system. In case of Raajneeti, this character doesn't come with any such aspirations. He is already a politician and his characteristics are certainly not white. So how does the Mahabharata angle comes into picture? I play Karan in Raajneeti. Remember him? He was someone who was not a bad guy. But then uske saath galat hua tha aur uske paas koyi choice nahi bachi thi siwaay iske ki woh galat ka saath de. He made a promise and refused to come on the right side. He was selfless though and this is what my character is in Raajneeti as well. Ajay Devgn Well, you also seem to be quite selfless in real life too. One can see that despite the film seemingly a hardcore political drama, there has been quite some focus on songs between Ranbir and Katrina. They ('Bheegi Si', 'Mora Piya') are good but don't you feel this was distracting audience from the real essence of the film? What happens is when you make a film like this, you have to give in to promotion of music. You have to sell your film and for that songs have to be promoted. Yes, in the course of this happening, a film does take a backseat. Well, that's a hazard with our film industry and we have to live with this. You have to sell your film and for that songs have to be promoted. Yes, in the course of this happening, a film does take a backseat But then audience may not really be looking at music within the narrative of a film like Raajneeti? I think so. Wahi toh main keh raha hoon, yeh hamaari majboori hai. Aisa nahi hona chahiye but there is not much choice actually. Having said that, it is not a matter of choice when it comes to watching the film. There are many out there waiting to catch up on Raajneeti. One question though - Earlier in the year, we have seen a serious film like Rann, which despite being well made failed at the box office. Doesn't that lend you a scary feel for Raajneeti? As I stated earlier, Prakash now understands that audience ko entertain kaise karna hai. Also, a film like Gangaajal being popular till date is a testimony to the fact that a good film always finds its audience. I am told by so many that when it comes on TV, people do not switch on to the other channel. They say that they have seen the film not 5, 10 or 15 times but 20 times. It would be great if there is similar response in theatres this time around for Raajneeti. Meanwhile, promotion of your next film Once Upon A Time In Mumbai is also picking up steam. Some good feelers here? Yes, reactions to the first look have been pretty great so far. I have been told that the buzz is indeed catching up for the film. I have seen portions of the film and truly believe that there is some good stuff that we have in our hands here.

Kareena Kapoor rated as India's Most Beautiful Woman by People

A legend once said that 'If there's anything that's equivalent to Perfection, then, that's perfection itself'. What more justification does anyone need when you have People magazine titling her as 'India's Most Beautiful Woman'. The issue has Kareena Kapoor running the readers through her growing up years. She throws light on questions like 'When do you feel most beautiful?' Her biggest mistake that she has ever made is she for the glam look or natural one. The firebrand that she always is, Kareena goes on record to say, "I believe that you are what you eat which is why I don't eat meat. Your stomach is not a graveyard. It's been more than five years since I gave up meat and I can see the difference". So, do we Bebo. Emraan returns as Australian City Council denies permission for Crook shoot

Emraan Hashmi It's turning out to be more bad than good for Emraan Hashmi starrer Crook: It's Good To Be Bad. On Wednesday, the cast and crew of the film were forced to return from Australia to India two days before end of schedule. Reason? Australian City Council denied the film any further permission to shoot and despite repeated requests, didn't budge from their stand. While this definitely meant loss of productive days for the team of Crook, it also left a bad taste in the mouth for everyone involved. Says a senior unit member who accompanied Emraan, Mohit (Suri) and others on their way back home, "It was very disheartening for all of us to come back without completing the shoot of Crook. The idea was to wrap it up all and then come back to India mainly for post production and other patch work, if required. However, we were stopped from shooting which threw a spanner in our plans." While the reason behind the denial of permission is not yet known, the fact remains that Crook is seeing its fair share of trouble and controversies right through its making. Since it is a known fact that the film touches upon the topical issue of racial discrimination against India in Australia, one can expect some heated debates around the time when Crook would be ready for release. Also, even as the crew members were aspiring to complete the shoot in record time, an unfortunate accident on the sets a few days back resulted in broken camera equipment and a close shave for Emraan. When contacted, Emraan Hashmi too sounded disappointed with the turn of events. "Yes, I am back in town. We were thrilled about finishing the shoot of Crook in Australia itself but it is so unfortunate that we couldn't do that", he says. Adds the unit member, "Well, our worry now is around completing the pending portions of the film now. It has been a straight loss of two days of shooting. Though procuring dates from all involved may not be that tough, we may have to change certain sequences in the film. Reason being that there is no intention of going back to Australia which means that the scenes, which were originally written for that part of the world, may have to go through some changes. Now we would have to hunt for some indoor locations within Mumbai to finish the shoot." A Bhatt production, Crook marks the debut of Neha Sharma and also stars Arjan Bajwa. With music by Pritam, the film is aiming for a release in September/October timeframe.

Madhoo to feature in Hema Malini's Tell Me Oh Khuda

Madhoo The very mention of the song 'Dil Hai Chhota Sa...Chhoti Si Aasha'... not just brings absolute vivid memories about the scenic beauty that Mani Ratnam had enigmatically captured in his iconic film Roja, but also the image of a girl who was 'innocence personified'. She was Madhoo, the very name who became an instant talk of the town and country, all thanks to her true-to-life performance in the said film. For past few years, even though Madhoo was seen in a few small films, no one really took a note of it. But, it seems that actress is now all set to change this equation. She is making a grand comeback with Hema Malini's much talked about film Tell Me Oh Khuda. Madhoo will be playing Vinod Khanna's daughter-in-law, who is pregnant for the second time in the film. Her role is that of a Rajasthani woman who has to fight the bias against the girl child in the state. It'll be interesting to see if Madhoo manages to make an impact again in Bollywood with her aunt, Hema Malini's, film, which is also a re-launch of sorts for Esha Deol.

David Dhawan shelves Amar Akbar Anthony, starts work on Partner 2

David Dhawan Salman Khan's ambitious plans to bring all the three Khan brothers together in a modernized remake of Manmohan Desai's Amar Akbar Anthony has fallen through. While most other problems of remaking such a popular film could be surmounted, the one hurdle that no one could find a way out of was to make Salman step into the Big B's shoes without looking presumptuous. The Khans and David Dhawan had planned to cast Arbaaz, Sohail and Salman as Amar (played originally by Vinod Khanna), Akbar (played by Rishi Kapoor in Desai's film) and Anthony (played by the Big B). While re-casting the first two actors was a breeze, getting Salman to do the Big B's role proved impossible. Apparently, Salman himself begged off from the huge responsibility. Admitting that the remake of Amar Akbar Anthony is now a dead project, David says, "It was just impossible to do it again. Can you imagine anyone else except Mr. Bachchan as Anthony Gonsalves? It's role he has made his own for as long as time exists." With Amar Akbar Anthony shelved, the sequel to the 2007 blockbuster Partner is now being revived by the Khans in right earnestness. A story idea has finally been cracked and Partner 2 is to go on the floors early next year in lieu of Amar Akbar Anthony. Dhawan admits Partner 2 is on the way, "We've got an idea and we're developing it. While the core cast of Salman and Govinda will remain all the other actors will change."
