Industry Roundup: Paul Rudd to Play Idiot Brother

Village Idiot: Paul Rudd has signed on to star in My Idiot Brother, a comedy directed by Jesse Peretz and written by his sister Evgenia Peretz (with David Schisgall). Rudd will be playing an “idealist dealing with his overbearing mother” who crashes at the house of his three ambitious sisters, causing them all sorts of trouble. But no doubt, by the end, ultimately teaching them all life lessons about family, growth and empathy. [HR]

1, 2, 3: Warner Bros. has picked up the rights to 3 Story: The Secret History of the Giant Man, a graphic novel by Matt Kindt. Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black (Milk) will both write and direct the adaptation of the story, a “modern fable” about a giant man whose medical condition causes him to continually grow. The tale is told from the point of view of three women (his mother, wife and daughter) as the man eventually grows to “three-story height.” The unexpected intersection of thoughtful romantic drama and Honey I Blew Up the Kid. [HR]

Spreading Fire: Arcade Fire has announced a brief U.S. tour to coincide with the release of their upcoming album The Suburbs on August 3. From August 1-11, the band will headline shows in a number of major east coast U.S. cities. So suburbanites are, sadly, out of luck. [Billboard]

Chasing Perfection: Brad Pitt’s Plan B, as part of its development deal with Reliance, has acquired the rights to The Imperfectionists, the Tom Rachman novel about the machinations of an English-language newspaper in Rome. The story focuses on the reporters and editors and the intersection of their personal and private lives. If the movie can match the kudos the book received, Pitt should be very pleased with his investment. [Deadline]

Ringing Belles: Belle and Sebastian, who haven’t played a show in America since 2006, will be touring briefly this fall, playing North American dates in Brooklyn, L.A., Chicago, Washington D.C., Boston and San Francisco. The band is also in the “final stages” of recording a new album. Two items of news almost as sunny as the band's melodies. [Pitchfork]

Blogger's Nemesis: Jason Patric has joined the cast of the HBO comedy pilot Tilda. He will play Andrew Brown, the nemesis of Diane Keaton’s powerful female blogger Tilda. Brown is the “mastermind behind the media empire RMG” which Tilda is looking to expose. This show just keeps sounding better and better. [Deadline]

Dirty Talk: Dirty Projectors will play the European festival circuit this summer before returning to the U.S., headlining a tour of North American clubs in the fall. Get your tickets now before it's no longer cool to like them. [Pitchfork]

Last Night on Late Night: Stewart and Colbert Return to Strike Comedy Black Gold

While all the rest of the late night crowd took the night off, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report returned from a two-week hiatus in top form. Naturally, the tragic BP oil spill was at the top of the list for ridicule, and the boys from Comedy Central did not disappoint. After spending a good amount of time raking President Obama over the coals for his uninspired handling of the situation, Jon Stewart brought in Wyatt Cenac to analyze a containment plan that should make every BP shareholder very, very happy. Up next, Stephen Colbert looks at the mess from a reality television angle as he considers the spill's destructive effect on James Carville while later exposing Dawn liquid detergent as the true villain behind the catastrophe. Watch our compilation to see what you missed.

Contaminated Drinking Water Sends 80 Queens Students to Hospital

More than 80 Queens elementary school students were sent to the hospital Tuesday after they got sick from drinking contaminated water, according to authorities. The children, students at Public School 20 in Flushing, complained of their stomachs hurting after sipping from water fountains in a new wing at the school. Students also noticed that the water in the school's toilets and fountains was pink. Officials said the contamination was caused by a chemical (propylene glycol) accidentally dumped into the school’s water supply by a worker who was fixing the school’s air conditioning system. Thankfully, all of the children are expected to make full recoveries.

'Alejandro' Preview Clip Promises Steaminess, Black Pantsuit

Lady Gaga appeared on Larry King Live tonight and, dressed in a glam King-inspired outfit, Gaga unveiled a preview clip for her upcoming "Alejandro" music video (due June 7). The 18-second preview hints at a more stylized (e.g. black and white) and less plot-driven final product, as compared to the overstuffed, vibrant "Telephone" video and her energetic, fashion forward "Bad Romance" clip. Gaga told King that the new video is a "celebration of my love and appreciation for the gay community, my admiration of their bravery and their love for one another, their courage and their relationships -- it's something I have yet to nail on the head with a man." While that influence isn’t necessarily evident in this clip, it appears as though we’re in for some Pantsuit Chic Gaga, some Kimono Gaga and, of course, some Frisky Gaga. And no matter what the final cut looks like, the fact that this amount of excitement surrounds a preview of a music video serves as further proof that Gaga has revitalized the form.

Tony Robbins Reality Show To Air This Summer

The latest in the recent spate of self-help, "motivational" shows, the reality series Breakthrough with Tony Robbins will debut on NBC on July 27. The network describes the show as an “inspirational, hour-long series starring Robbins and his team of experts who will help participants and their families overcome complex challenges and personal obstacles, and turn their lives around.” Which means we are guaranteed a healthy serving of schmaltzy music, tears, and probably a clumsy attempt at a catchphrase. New 'Smart Card' System Could Spell Doom for MetroCard

First a new subway map, and now this. The MTA will begin testing a new, tap-and-go payment system Monday as part of a six-month pilot program, with the intention to eventually phase out the Metrocard. The new system will allow bus and subway riders to pass a specially equipped key chain, credit card or phone across a reader instead of swiping a card, similar to the methods in place in London, Washington D.C. and Hong Kong. Participants will register beforehand to have the money drawn from their bank accounts, “much like the E-Z pass for drivers.” The agency hopes to completely replace the Metrocard by 2014, at which point instead of holding up your friends searching your pockets and wallet for a yellow card, you'll, uh, be holding them up as you frantically look for your key chain.

The Tonight Show Gets Robbed

According to TMZ, Jay Leno’s The Tonight Show was the victim of grand theft, as someone allegedly stole thousands of dollars of wardrobe from one of the show’s office facilities. The clothes were reportedly meant for the members of the show's new band, fronted by Ricky Minor (who hasn't been having the best luck recently). CNN.com Inadvertently Publishes Al and Tipper Gore's E-mail Address

Thanks to CNN.com, it will be surprisingly easy for tabloid reporters (and bachelors/bachelorettes looking to score a date!) to contact Al and Tipper Gore in wake of their separation, as the website accidentally revealed their private e-mail address Tuesday afternoon. The site included a link to a PDF of an e-mail that the Gores sent to friends announcing their separation: while the e-mail address was blacked out, a single click of the black bar opened up an e-mail client with the address filled in. The PDF was removed after about two hours, but that was plenty of time for the address to circulate and hit the twitterverse. [Web Newser via Gawker]

SECOND G-LANCE: Lance Bass Goes Glambert

Is Lance Bass ganking some of Adam Lambert’s swagga? That smokey eye is winking us yes. It didn’t take much to transform Lance Bass into an Adam Lambert lookalike. Photographer Mike Ruiz is responsible for the following photoshoot, which incorporated jet black lipstick, eye makeup sillyputtied off a tranny’s face, and a faraway green-eyed stare that somehow rings empty; hollow. Lance Bass was not cut out for this look. But God bless him for trying.

Sidenote: We will spend the next 9 hours perfecting this eye-makeup. Why is it only female impersonators can ever get this look done right? My smoky eyes are the Virginia Slims to the above Marlboro Light 100s.

Problem Solved: James Cameron to Plug Gulf Coast Oil Leak

It's been a full two weeks since Kevin Costner was entrusted with the cleanup of the BP spill, and the Gulf is still as oily as ever. Thankfully, though, the Feds are finally taking the problem seriously — they've called in James Cameron. The HMFIC was summoned to Washington today, along with some oil experts, to participate in an EPA-organized brainstorming session and suggest "innovative ways" to cap the spill. No details of the talks have been released yet, but when the Gulf Coast looks as good as Pandora again by the weekend, you'll know who to thank.

Did Rihanna Plagiarize a Look for Her ‘Rockstar 101’ Video?

As BlackBook points out, Rihanna's black-painted, thorn-hatted getup at the beginning of her "Rockstar 101" video looks a lot like an ensemble in the short film artist Bon Duke made for designer Savannah Wyatt (and that Kanye West posted on his blog earlier this year). Says Duke, "I refuse to get stepped on and let it get passed by." Both videos are pasted below. Thoughts?

AllianceBernstein CEO Peter Kraus Keeps It Real

Peter Kraus is very rich. He retired from Goldman Sachs after 22 years in 2008, then collected a $25 million payout after working for Merrill Lynch for three months. After that, he moved on to become CEO of AllianceBernstein, which paid him a $6 million bonus this year, on top of the $75 million worth of stock he owns. He has a $37 million apartment, a collection of designer watches that match his suits, a collection of ties that match his watches, and a collection of fine art that matches his life as a baller. But don't make the mistake of thinking that Kraus is only interested in material things. He has depth.

As this anecdote from the Post illustrates:

On one wall hangs "Les Balayeurs du Désert" (The Desert Sweepers), a limited-edition video by Su-Mei Tse played on a large flat-screen monitor. It shows dozens of uniformed janitors sweeping sand in the desert with brooms. Only five copies were sold, for about $20,000 each, according to the Peter Blum Gallery in Chelsea."What's the meaning of life?" Kraus says with a smirk, referring to the video. "If you can get comfortable with that, you can get comfortable with anything."

You see? We are all the janitors, endlessly, futilely pushing the grains of sand until life is over and we die. Except some people, who just get to watch the janitors push the sand from the plush comfort of their corner offices.

See-through ‘Lingerie’ Pants May Be Having a Moment

Lots of designers seemed to agree pants were not a good thing for stylish folk to wear this spring. But sort through all those booty shorts and fashion diapers and there were, in fact, some new pants to consider. Refinery 29 has noticed that plenty of these pants are sheer. See-through pants: the way to wear pants without really wearing pants! Here you see from left: sheer cover-up pants by Diane Von Furstenberg, see-through lingerie pants by Alexander Wang, and sheer pants on the spring Valentino runway. We kind of dig them (with shorts or a bathing suit underneath, only) because we imagine it would feel like wearing the I Dream of Jeannie costume we trick-or-treated in once, but without a coat over the top ruining it because Mom thought we'd be cold. But maybe we just like them because we look at too many clothes on the Internet.

Majority of Americans Can’t Name a Supreme Court Justice

Sixty-five percent, to be exact. No, this isn't surprising, in light of a million other surveys indicating that Americans don't take much interest in civics, geography, or history. Plus, as Cornell University law professor Michael C. Dorf points out, Supreme Court justices don't really make the news after the "fifteen minutes" of their confirmation hearings. Except that Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed less than ten months ago, and still, only 15 percent of Americans were able to name her. Does "Wise Latina" ring any bells? Empathy? First Hispanic on the Supreme Court, ever? Come on, America! [PRNewswire via Wonkette]

Times National Desk Launches Two New Bureaus, One Headed by Sulzberger Heir Himself

We hear national editor Rick Berke asked around to a bunch of young reporters to see if they were interested in taking a new Kansas City gig as part of his new Midwestern and Plains states coverage before he found a seemingly unlikely taker: A.G. Sulzberger, the hardworking and well-liked part-owner of the paper and son of Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. The Observer had Friday's internal memo on the appointment, which not only notes that Marc Lacey has been running the recently contentious Phoenix bureau that will share the region's coverage, but also reveals that Sulzberger is a vegetarian. Which is sure to be fun in the land of barbecue.

Guardian: Giles Deacon Is ‘Like a Free-range Chicken Pecking at Corn Amid a Gaggle of Strutting Peacocks’

Last week, Giles Deacon was appointed the creative director of Emanuel Ungaro. But what do you know about Deacon other than that he makes extremely fun eyeball and dinosaur bags and had a rousing Pac-Man–inspired spring 2009 runway show? Over the weekend, the Times noted the lack of superstar designers landing jobs at top houses, suggesting Deacon isn't a superstar designer. He's not flashy, he seems unlikely to pose nude in an ad campaign, and his former girlfriend says he's "very happy on his own with a sketchbook and a pint of beer." Beer? This is a man who is breaking down barriers.

The Guardian elaborates:

Heterosexual, mild-mannered and almost wholly unaffected, he seems out of place in the gaudy world of high fashion, like a free-range chicken pecking at corn amid a gaggle of strutting peacocks. "He likes everybody," explains [David] Waddington. "He's very inclusive and talks the same to everyone, from waiters to heads of fashion houses — he's great like that."

Designers who are as famous for who they are as they are for their design talents (Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford) are fantastic, but the demure Giles sounds like an awesome guy, too.

It is true that Deacon has always been keen to play down the pretentiousness of the industry. Friends say he has little time for pomposity and firmly believes fashion should be accessible rather than exclusive. To this end, he has worked on several collaborations, designing everything from Sky HDTV boxes to Smythson note cards and even a strapless polka dot dress for the Cadbury's Caramel Bunny to mark the launch of Caramel Nibbles. Since 2007, he has also designed a highly successful collection for the high-street chain New Look. In haughtier fashion circles, Deacon's populist touch is greeted sniffily but he is unapologetic: collaborations, he once said, are practical because they generate "the money you need for your own company".

Just look at how far fashion has come. The top designers showing in Paris can design dresses for candy bunnies and it's totally okay.

ROCK BOTTOM SHOWDOWN: Mark Feuerstein vs. Forgotten American Idol Contestant

Twitter friend JeniSue @replied to me a link earlier today with the following message: “This may be worse than Mr. Schue rapping…” and a link to this video. I clicked with hesitation, as any read of this blog knows that Glee’s Mr. Schuester rapping is my aural kryptonite.

What I found could only be described as the umpteenth natural disaster to hit Earth in 2010. Oft forgotten about actor Mark Feuerstein rapping in a promo for USA’s Royal Pains. And you thought Good Morning Miami was this guys rock bottom.

VS!

American Idol Season 9 Semi-Finalist Todrick Hall isn’t letting his dreams of stardom fade anytime soon. So in order to make it big once again, he’s trying his luck by singing into fast food drive-thru order speakers. Can I get a witness:

The Question: Who has has truly hit rock bottom? We kind of have to give this one to Feuerstein, who sadly does not have a group of chorus girls in the backseat.

Why Are New Yorkers Such Bad Drivers?

For the second year in a row, a survey by GMAC insurance finds that New York has the worst drivers in the country. But, in our opinion, the methodology behind the rankings might not be entirely fair. GMAC determined its scores by giving a survey, composed of questions taken from different state driving tests, to 5,000 people across the country. New Yorkers scored the worst on the test, with an average score of 70. Why such a bad score? Wade Bontrager, a senior vice-president for GMAC Insurance, has a couple of theories for the test's geographic disparities, both of which demonstrate why New York is at a disadvantage here.

1. "Because people that drive in very congested areas lose sight of the rules of the road." This is true, in a way. If you define a good driver as someone who has memorized rules like "What do you do at a flashing yellow light?" or "When is it appropriate to drive off a paved roadway to pass another car?" — two situations on the test that don't come up very often in the city — then okay, fair enough. But when you drive in New York City, the only rule is to make it to your destination without dying or killing someone else. Considering the congested, obstacle-laden environment, it takes a pretty good driver to accomplish that.

2. "Another theory: people in states with large metropolitan areas tend to take public transit more often and lose some of their driving skills." Yes, obviously! We're just not driving as much as everyone else. Ask the good people of Kansas or South Dakota about the "rules of the subway" and see how well they perform. How many failed MetroCard swipes should you give the person in front of you before emitting an audible sigh? (Three.) Who are you supposed to offer your seat to? (Old people, pregnant women, small children, people with canes or crutches, attractive members of the gender in which you are sexually interested.) How do you examine the wall-mounted map without freaking out the person sitting in front of it? (Craning of the head, faux squinting.) You didn't know that, did you, Kansas?

New Gay French McDonald’s Ad Not All That Gay

In France, McDonald’s has started airing a commercial that showcases how okay they are with gay people eating inside of their restaurants.  And judging from this commercial, they are barely moderately okay with it… just so long as you hide your sexuality from your father.

McDonald’s?  That’s it?  That’s your big gay commercial?  Your Rondald McDonald and Grimace commercials are gayer than that.  Speaking French isn’t gay when you’re in France.  And that kid is wearing a zip-up hoodie.

If they would have tried to slyly reveal that a character on Lost was gay, this is how they would have done it. (I’m not making fun of Lost.  Calm down, comment people.  But there is definitely a style similarity here.  You know I’m right.)

Teenage Werewolves: More Angsty Than Wolfy

Last week, Dan posted a very great video of a news report about high school kids who call themselves werewolves.  Well, this week I am posting a werewolf video.  And this video raises a number of questions.

1.)  Is this guy serious?

2.) If he isn’t serious, is he funny?

3.) If he is serious, is Josh funny?

4.) There’s no way he’s serious, right?  He just threw an Xbox.

The video contains some NSFW language, but this is probably your boss’s nephew, so he’s not going to care.

I found this on a website called Space Ghetto.  I will not link to it for fear that you might accidentally click on it and see some very disturbing things. The website is 64% very disturbing things.  Google and visit it at your own peril.

Alexander Wang, Prabal Gurung, Jason Wu, and More Pose for CFDA Glamour Shots

Joseph Altuzarra.

The CFDA awards, the Oscars of the fashion industry, are on Monday! Each year the CFDA publishes not just a program for the awards, but a journal, featuring sexy shots of the nominees. Most of the time it's the designers' clothes that do the vamping, but in this journal they get to flaunt their sexy stuff, too. Alexander Wang posed with six of his friends from high school. Tom Ford posed on his own with a series of mirrors that reflect his image, so instead of one Tom Ford we see ten Tom Fords, because the only thing better than Tom Ford, as critics keep saying, is more Tom Ford (Tom Ford Tom Ford Tom Ford!). Sølve Sundsbø shot this year's nominees, while Lori Goldstein styled the shoot under the creative direction of Trey Laird. See a selection of this year's portraits in the slideshow, including three images obtained exclusively by the Cut.

Here Are Some Potato Chips Named After Historic Diarrhea

I was at a sandwich place the other day when I noticed this was a flavor of potato chips they sold.

So, the name of the chip flavor is Mama Zuma’s Revenge, which is a pun based on Montezuma’s Revenge, which is what they called amoebic dysentery when the Spanish invaded the new world. So that’s, you know… not cool. Especially when you consider who these chips are made for.

Oh, cool, they’re made for people who already have diarrhea every time they eat something normal.  And they’re also habanero flavored?   Way to be sensitive, potato chips.

Vintage Entrepreneur Shareen Mitchell Can’t Keep Enough Rompers in Stock

Those who bemoan New York and L.A.’s lack of affordable vintage obviously haven’t met Shareen Mitchell. The actress and Vogue and Mademoiselle alum started her bi-coastal business, Shareen Vintage, out of a ten-by-ten-foot booth at the Melrose Trading Post. By her third week, girls were lining up to get first dibs on her carefully curated finds, and Shareen was forced to upgrade her space. “I found this funky warehouse in an area of L.A. where there’s nothing but abandoned buildings and train tracks,” she told us. “When I opened the first weekend, the parking lot was filled with Mercedes and BMWs.” Soon after, Shareen expanded her operation to New York, where her hungry following continued, thanks to her wallet-friendly prices (most items are between $34 and $58) and anything but intimidating demeanor. “My store is as much a community of women as it is a place to buy clothes,” she gushed. “Girls always say 'I came here to buy a dress and I ended up getting therapy.'”

Starting this month, Shareen is partnering with Madewell to sell her coveted wares in the store’s Soho and Century City outposts. We caught up with the entrepreneur to talk about the grunge resurgence, corsets, and how she sources her amazing finds.

What can customers expect to see in Madewell stores?
Lots of reworked vintage that speaks to their brand and looks great with denim. We have a lovely selection of summery pieces, like cotton skirts and sundresses.

What sort of woman shops at Shareen Vintage?
My girl is the girl who goes to the party when all of the other girls are rock-star glam and shows up in a sheer, pale-pink, bias-cut dress that’s falling off her shoulder and every man and every woman turns their head.

What are your personal style signatures?
I wear bracelets every day. I wear corsets over my clothes, it’s a signature statement thing that I do. Even if you dress in a modern way, pick something from another time to add on.

How do you find vintage pieces for your stores?
Through private individuals and thrifting. I sort through a minimum of 3,000 garments a day, and I pick out what I consider useful. That might be useful as-is, or because it will permit a rework that will bring it to today.

What is your favorite decade, fashion-wise?
The thirties and forties. It’s a no-brainer. I think that’s happening in fashion in a big way. Anything bias-cut, beautiful shoulders, draping, that old Hollywood movie-star look.

What is selling best in your stores right now? What can’t you keep in stock?
Rompers, classic or bloomer-leg. My most forward vintage girls want grunge, but we restyle it, cut it mini. Girls are always going to want forties and they’re always going to want eighties if it’s not too over the top.

Who are your favorite designers?
Karl Lagerfeld. Anything that Chanel has ever done. Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Louis Vuitton, and Marc Jacobs.

What’s the first designer item you bought?
A pair of Yves Saint Laurent black pleat-front high-waisted trousers. I bought them in Paris and I still have them and they still fit me and they’re still chic. They have a stovepipe leg and they’re super high-waisted, like past my belly button.

How would you describe your personal style?
Sophia Loren crossed with the queen of England. Meaning classic mixed with sort of a sassy Mediterranean feel.

What trends do you like right now?
These slim, chiffon, bias-cut dresses. Everything pale and nude. This is a reaction to that very heavily structured, hard-edge, rock-and-roll girl. This is what fashion is: A girl has been dressing a certain way, and suddenly she wants to see herself in a different way.

What trends do you hate?
Anything not flattering to the female form; I don’t like clothing as architecture. I like the female form to be revealed. I don’t like when it’s about the designer — I like when it’s about the woman.

What should every girl have in her closet?
A classic black pencil dress. It’s completely timeless. It can be worn 1,000 different ways.
