U.S. To Lend A Hand to South Korea Naval Defense

After the North Korea torpedo assault which sunk a South Korean warship - leading South Korea to designate their northern neighbor an "archenemy" - the U.S. is now stepping in to help make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen again. Senior American officials said they are planning a long-term program to help “plug major gaps” in South Korea’s naval defense now that it's clear the country is "vulnerable to surprise attack." Another Politican Misrepresents Military Record

It looks like another candidate has “pulled a Richard Blumenthal.” Illinois Republican congressman Mark Kirk, who is running for Barack Obama’s vacated Senate seat in Illinois, has ‘fessed up to falsely claiming he won a prestigious military award. On numerous occasions (the first in a 2002 speech recorded by C-SPAN), Kirk said he was the recipient of the U.S. Navy’s “Intelligence Officer of the Year” award for his service during NATO’s conflict with Serbia in the late 1990s. Just one minor issue: he, uh, never won it. When contacted by the Washington Post, who had learned of the error, Kirk’s spokesman Eric Elk offered only, "we found the award was misidentified and corrected the name." [WP]

Guillermo Del Toro Departs Hobbit Films

Guillermo del Toro is no longer directing the two-film adaptation of The Hobbit - citing the “mounting pressures of conflicting schedules” - though he will still co-write the two screenplays.

“In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming The Hobbit, I am faced with the hardest decision of my life,” del Toro said. “After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures.

Executive producer Peter Jackson said that, in light of the project's continued delays, del Toro was no longer able to commit to spending six years living in New Zealand: “We feel very sad to see Guillermo leave The Hobbit, but he has kept us fully in the loop and we understand how the protracted development time on these two films, due to reasons beyond anyone's control, has compromised his commitment to other long-term projects.” Sadly, this means we may also never get to see del Toro's "monster" acting debut.

Bill Maher Thinks Obama Should Act Like A 'Real Black President'

Bill Maher took some time on his HBO show to discuss how he believes a “real black president” should be handling a crisis like the ongoing Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

"I thought when we elected a black president, we were going to get a black president. You know, this [oil spill] is where I want a real black president. I want him in a meeting with the BP CEOs, you know, where he lifts up his shirt where you can see the gun in his pants. That's — 'we've got a motherfu**ing problem here?' Shoot somebody in the foot."

Nothing brings out the LOLs like a joke that's both hackneyed and racist!

M.I.A. Posts Song, Audio Clips In Response to Hirschberg Profile

Tweeting Lynne Hirschberg’s phone number was apparently just the beginning. M.I.A. has now found a more creative way to channel her anger at the controversial, Hirschberg-penned Times Magazine profile, posting a song on her blog today called “I’m a Singer” which includes lyrics like “Why the hell would journalists be thick as shit / Cause lies equals power equals politics” and “You're a racist / I wouldn't trust you one bit.” The refrain is a bit less specific, though just as charged: “I’m a singer / Never said anything else / I didn’t lie to you / Thinking of somebody else.”

In addition to the track, M.I.A. posted two purported audio clips from the interview, one of which - titled “Here’s the TRUFF” - proves (assuming it’s real) that Hirschberg was in fact the one responsible for ordering the infamous truffle fries, the subject of the piece’s most scathing line ("'I kind of want to be an outsider,' she said, eating a truffle-flavored French fry").

We're hoping Hirschberg fires back with a dis track of her own... maybe with a Lady Gaga verse?

Congress Should Have Waited on 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Vote, Mullen Says

"Personally I believe the law should change. But I also said this review is critically important. I would like the legislation to wait until we've completed the review [due December 1] so we can look at how to implement it... What I don't want to do is electrify the force at the time of two wars... Ideally, I would certainly have preferred that legislation not be brought forward in terms of the change until we are completed with that review." - Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on "Fox News Sunday." The measure, which has been approved by the House of Representatives and a Senate committee, still must clear the entire Senate. [Reuters]

Avenue Q Makes Some Changes In Light Of Coleman's Death

Thomas, in character as Coleman, at Friday night's show.

Tony-winning Broadway musical Avenue Q, which features a satirical character based on and named after Gary Coleman, will be adjusting its script in light of the actor’s death. Jeff Marx, the show’s co-creator, said that, after some “very serious consideration,” they will be altering some lines which seem “inappropriate now,” though the character will remain in the show with the same name.

“We probably cut 20 words out of 1 million from the show tonight,” said Jeff Whitty, the book writer for the musical.

Danielle K. Thomas, who plays Coleman in the show (and who led a tribute to the late actor following Friday's performance), said she was “terrified” to make her entrance Friday night. But the audience did not seem to be put off by Coleman's character, as the Times reports they “clapped and cheered enthusiastically for [Thomas], and laughed through numbers like 'Schadenfreude' (in which Coleman sings that the world needs people like himself 'Who’ve been knocked around by fate / ‘Cause when people see us, they don’t want to be us') and 'Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist' (in which he admits he enjoys jokes about Polish people).”

'Top Kill' Declared Failure, BP To Try Capping Plan Next

Last night, BP admitted that the "top kill" has failed in stopping the Gulf of Mexico oil leak, which Carol Browner, Obama’s adviser for environment and energy, today called “the worst environmental disaster we’ve ever faced in this country."

"This scares everybody, the fact that we can't make this well stop flowing, the fact that we haven't succeeded so far,” BP Chief Operating Office Doug Settles said at a press conference Saturday night.

BP will now attempt to use robot submarines to cut off the damaged pipe and place a cap on it, a procedure which could take at least four days to implement. And it is likely to take much longer for the spill to be completely eradicated, according to Browner. The long-term plan, which will not be in place until August, is the drilling of a relief well; Browner said the administration has ordered BP to drill a second relief well in case the first doesn't work.

"American people need to know that it is possible we will have oil leaking from this well until August when the relief wells will be finished,” she said.

The capping strategy is seen as a temporary and uncertain solution; as Obama explained in a statement Saturday, it "is not without risk and has never been attempted before at this depth… that is why it was not activated until other methods had been exhausted." Cutting the pipe in order to cap it could actually release up to 20 percent more oil over a few days because a key pipe needs to be cut so that the cap will be able to fit on properly.

Sex and Persia Vanquished By Shrek

Neither the return of Carrie and friends nor Jake Gyllenhaal’s sculpted chest were able to overcome the green ogre at the box office over the three-day holiday weekend. Shrek Forever After held on to the top spot, earning $43.3 million, only a 42 percent drop from its opening weekend. The poorly reviewed Sex and the City 2 grossed $32.1 million ($46.3 million since Wednesday night); the first film took in $57 million in its first three days when it opened in 2008. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time underperformed, finishing in third place with $30.2 million. Perhaps the Times was on to something. [E! News]
