Dennis Hopper Dead at 74

Sad news: The legendary Dennis Hopper died in his Venice, California home this morning from complications due to prostate cancer, with which he was first diagnosed a decade ago. He was 74. Vulture was lucky enough to interview him twice recently, once for his role in 2008's Elegy and again last September about his second career as a photographer. [NYT]

Really?? You’re getting out of control, 2010:

Dennis Hopper, whose portrayals of drug-addled, often deranged misfits in the landmark films “Easy Rider,” “Apocalypse Now” and “Blue Velvet” drew on his early out-of-control experiences as part of a new generation of Hollywood rebel, died at his home in Venice, Calif., on Saturday. He was 74.

According to the Times obituary written by Edward Wyatt, Mr. Hopper died from complications of prostate cancer. His death was first reported by Reuters. (- NY Times)

Well, this blows. I guess you could argue that with what he’s done to his body in the past, it’s amazing he lasted to 74, but this story still came out of nowhere (Hopper once joked during the ESPY Awards about a decade ago, “I never would’ve made it as a baseball player — with the amount of drugs I’ve done in my life, I would’ve been suspended, like, three or four games.”)

I’ll always have a personal affinity for Mr. Hopper, too, after a lifetime of people asking me “Is he your uncle” and me saying “Yes” and them saying “No he’s not!” and me saying “You’re right, he’s not, then why’d you ask?” (Sometimes people try to sound cooler by asking if Edward Hopper is my uncle, but I digress). On behalf of the D. Hoppers in the world, he’ll be missed.
