Last Night on Late Night: Maya Rudolph's Life on the Road with Alanis Morissette

Did you know that Maya Rudolph was once a member of nineties rock band The Rentals? PT Anderson's better half tells Jimmy Kimmel about the time she and her one-hit wonders opened for Alanis Morissette on a tour that was, according to Rudolph, more Mötley Crüe than Lilith Fair. Up next, Jay Leno agrees with Heidi Montag about her life decisions and Craig Ferguson thinks the Sex and the City franchise might want to think twice about the girl's next overseas destination. Wrapping things up, Jimmy Fallon does his best to keep alive the time honored tradition of bringing exotic animals on the set of a late night talk show for laughs. Watch our compilation to see what you missed.

Industry Roundup: Emma Roberts Is The New Neve Campbell, Willis To Star in Tomb

Greene Out, Roberts In: Emma Roberts has been cast as the lead of the upcoming Scream 4 in a role that was originally offered to Twilight’s Ashley Greene. Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson will be returning to direct and write, respectively. Roberts will be playing Jill, the heroine of the rebooted franchise who is the cousin of returning original Scream star Neve Campbell. Let's hope for Emma's sake that her post-Scream career trajectory doesn't mimic Campbell's, though. [Heat Vision/HR]

Bruce Almighty: Summit is in early talks with Bruce Willis to star in the prison escape drama The Tomb, with Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) looking to direct. Willis would play Ray Breslin, a structural security authority who analyzes “every” high security prison and learns a wide range of survival skills in order to build prisons. But when he is framed and incarcerated in a prison he designed himself, he has to escape and find out who put him in jail. Our money's on Ashton. [Deadline]

Nothing But The Truth: Maura Tierney is in negotiations for the leading role in ABC’s new legal drama The Whole Truth, after Joely Richardson left the show for "personal reasons" after filming the pilot. Tierney was actually originally approached for the Truth role, but went with NBC's Parenthood at the time instead, though she had to drop out of that series when she began treatment for breast cancer last fall. [Deadline]

J&J: Rilo Kiley lead singer Jenny Lewis has teamed up with her boyfriend, singer-songwriter Johnathan Rice, to form a duo called Jenny and Johnny. Though there has been no announcement about if and when they will be releasing music, they have three tour dates scheduled this fall in Boston, Brooklyn and Philadelphia. Time to get nervous, She and Him. [Pitchfork]

Pearce-ing: Marvel has hired Drew Pearce to write the script for Runaways, a live-action film adaptation of the cult comic book about the children of supervillians who attempt to use their evil powers for good. Pearce, while a relatively unknown British writer, has a background in the genre: he created No Heroics, a U.K. comedy television series about a bar frequented by off-duty superheroes. This film is not to be confused with this year's The Runaways, in which children attempt to use their unruly hairdos for good. [Deadline]

Cowabunga: Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon have brought on Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners to produce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the live-action movie that will reboot the 1990s film series. So clearly Megan Fox is now the front runner for April! [Deadline]

U.N. Official Calls Out CIA Drone Strikes As Unlawful

Alston.

A senior U.N. official is expected to ask the U.S. to put a halt to CIA drone strikes against suspected Al-Qaeda targets, a tactic that the Obama administration has come to rely on in Pakistan. Philip Alston, the U.N.'s special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, told the Times he will be delivering a report on June 3 to the U.N. Human Rights Council positing that the “life and death power” of drones should be wielded by armed forces rather than intelligence agencies. While Alston’s recommendation is not legally binding, it will assert that the implementation of combat drones by nonmilitary personnel is a war crime, arguing that while the Defense Department demonstrates “not perfect but quite abundant accountability” when a bombing doesn’t go according to plan, the CIA “by definition… [is] not going to answer questions, not provide any information, and not do any follow-up that we know about.”

Subway Map Gets A Makeover

Next month, the MTA will be giving one of the city’s most recognizable icons - the subway map - a face-lift. The new version will be “resized, recolored and simplified,” adding emphasis to Manhattan (which will be widened by 30 percent), and shrinking Staten Island in half. The other three boroughs will grow with the elimination of the “service guide” which currently lines the map’s bottom border. Overall, the new map is meant to be "simpler" and less cluttered, which should hopefully reduce the amount of time you have to spend awkwardly hunched over a stranger, trying not to make physical contact as you squint to figure out where you need to transfer.

Sex and the City 2 Poised to Earn More Than First Film

Proving that absolutely horrendous reviews mean little to nothing when up against the juggernaut that is Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City 2 managed to earn more in its initial opening of midnight shows than its predecessor amassed. Playing in about 2,000 theaters at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, the sequel made about $3 million, 20 percent more than the first film made. Sex and the City earned $62.6 million in its first four days when it was released Memorial Day weekend in 2008; and it would appear that, despite what they may say, people are still hungry for Sex two years later. CBS Remains Dominant, Again Most-Watched Network

For the seventh time in the last eight years, CBS was the most watched network this 2009-2010 television season, averaging 11.77 million viewers. The network also had seven of the 10 most watched shows of the year, including NCIS, The Mentalist, Criminal Minds and The Good Wife. However, Fox - which also earned its sixth straight victory in overall ratings - was the top network in viewers in the coveted 18-49 demo, buoyed by the popularity of American Idol and Glee among the younger crowd, which makes it somewhat surprising that the slate of new shows due this fall is comprised of more Friends knock-offs than feel-good musicals.

Frank DiGiacomo to Take Over Daily News Gossip Column

Vanity Fair contributing editor and former Page Six helmer Frank DiGiacomo will return to his tabloid past this summer. He's headed to the New York Daily News to take over the Gatecrasher column from able young scribe Amanda Sidman, who herself will go on to be a features writer with the paper (her faithful aide-de-club Carson Griffith will remain to help the new guy) . Though DiGiacomo hasn't ever worked at the News, he's part of the gossip tradition there — he once co-edited Page Six with Daily News columnist Joanna Molloy, who later went on to write the Rush & Molloy column for over a decade with her husband, George Rush. (Rush just accepted the buyout offered by News brass — but long ago he worked as a gossip legman for Molloy and DiGiacomo at the Post). It's been a while since DiGiacomo has been in the gossip trenches, but we're sure he'll do fine — In 2004, he penned Vanity Fair's epic oral history of Page Six, the city's seminal gossip clearing house.

Hurricane Season Is Only Going to Cause More Problems For BP

Meteorologists are predicting an especially busy hurricane season this summer and this, in combination with the largest oil spill in U.S. history, is likely to only add to BP's headaches (good thing everything else has been going so well for them!). Scientists have said the storms could either move the oil along the water’s surface (bad for the shoreline!) or mix the oil with the water, causing it to sink (bad for marine life!). Additionally, weather experts said the black oil could heat the water faster and accelerate the formation of hurricanes, which would create a “storm surge” and add to the mess. (One optimistic scientist said there’s a possibility the oil could instead slow the growth of storms, as the oil could actually reduce the amount of evaporated ocean water that fuels hurricanes.) So: no one really knows what’s going to happen when the hurricanes come but, unsurprisingly, it probably won’t be good!

Repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Passes Senate Panel

The Senate Armed Services Committee has voted tonight to repeal the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy barring openly gay and lesbian soldiers from serving in the military. The measure - which passed by a 16-12 count - still needs to pass a vote in the House (which will take place Thursday evening or Friday). No changes will take place until a Pentagon study about the impact the new policy would have on the troops is completed, which likely won't be until December 1. [WP]

Update: The House voted late Thursday night to let the Defense Department repeal the policy by a vote of 234-194. It was adopted as an amendment to the annual Pentagon policy bill, which the House will likely vote on Friday.

Even New Line Execs Can't Figure Out Why the Fourth Final Destination Made Nearly $200 Million, But Here Comes Number Five

Last year’s The Final Destination was meant to be the last film in the franchise. And yet now, New Line Cinema plans to have a director by the end of the week for a fifth FD movie, which they plan to release in August 2011. Why won’t this franchise die? (Other than creative irony.) Because the last entry, which was near-universally panned, more than doubled the worldwide grosses of any previous Final Destination film: It’s still playing around the globe, and is approaching $200 million dollars. Privately, even New Line studio executives admit to being utterly confused by its success: Confides one, “It’s the worst film of the franchise. And that’s not my opinion; that’s everyone’s opinion.” (It got a 27% Rotten Tomatoes fresh rating, the lowest of all four movies.)

The normal explanations don’t account for its success: True, the film was released in 3D, which commands a higher ticket price, but Europe and Asia have far fewer 3D screens than America, not more. Inflation might account for some of the difference in grosses, but Paul Dergarabedian, the box office analyst for Hollywood.com, says that the relatively short time between the last film’s release in 2006 and this year’s means that inflation wouldn’t have plumped up its grosses by much, either.

The Final Destination has done better just about everywhere overseas. So far (and it’s still just opening in some countries, like Italy), it’s made $115 million internationally, which is $55.5 million more than the next highest-grossing entry, the first one. Some areas seem particularly crazy about death: Colombia’s grosses quintupled from the third film in the franchise. Australian grosses are three and a half times greater. Dutch, Israeli, and German grosses tripled. And French and Brazilian grosses doubled.

Craig Perry, who has produced all of the Final Destination movies, thinks that what most helped the fourth film was that for the first time, it was not distributed internationally by New Line Cinema, which never had a great international operation even when it was the vaunted mini-studio that released the Lord of the Rings trilogy. And now that it's just a small genre label within Warner Bros., that giant studio's muscular distribution arms handled FD4’s overseas release. “That really puts the onus on us for the next one,” says Perry, laughing a little nervously, “If it doesn’t perform, we can’t exactly blame New Line.”

New Line had noticed that the domestic grosses for The Final Destination had been promising, and even though they had no specific calendar to make a fifth, they assigned Eric Heisserer, who had written their Nightmare on Elm Street reboot, currently in theaters, to write a script. But they were surprised to hear Warners president Alan Horn announce at last spring’s ShoWest that the project was a go, and even more surprised when last month he set an August 26, 2011 release date. Suddenly, they started madly vetting directors.

The fifth film will also be in 3D, and we hear that the three leading candidates to helm it are all first-time directors, but with considerable expertise in 3D and special effects: Steve Quale, a second unit and visual effects director on Avatar; Bradley Parker, a commercials director and second unit/visual effects director on Matt Reeves’ (Cloverfield) forthcoming film Let Me In; and Charles Gibson, the second unit/visual effects director on the Pirates of the Carribean movies.

Heisserer turned in a draft of an FD5 script, and now he’s doing rewrites from the set of The Thing (which he also wrote). New Line hopes that the combination of a writer on a hot streak and a fresh director with experience in special effects should bode well for the next film, but that may be just a matter of fate.

‘Long Island’s Favorite Magician’ Pleads Guilty on 64 Counts of Child Pornography

"AbracadaAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!"

Suffolk County photographer Robert Ifantino, 52, pleaded guilty today to 44 counts of unlawful surveillance and 64 counts of child pornography, reports the Post. The charges came after police discovered he'd hidden a video camera in the dressing room of a photo studio in his Central Islip home. He'd videotape women and little girls with it, and investigators found "hundreds of images" of them undressing and dressing on his hard drive. Fittingly (because they always do), the man had a parallel career as "Bob Infantino, Long Island's Favorite Magician." Presto, change-o!

Hamptons Now Plagued With Value Retail

The Hamptons are not over, they've just been poorer lately. After the economy bottomed out last year, the area's retail scene had to do some soul-searching. From WWD:

“We have rolled the clock back 10 years, in terms of retail,” observed Lars Svanberg, owner of Main Beach Surf, at 352 Montauk Highway in Wainscott. “It’s a shorter season. It’s compressed to two months. Now we’re dialing into July and August. Every business will tell you the same thing. People are spending less time in the Hamptons. They’re busy working, trying to make a buck.”

But things are looking better this season, as Hamptons people might be getting richer again. Or at least rich enough to spend on frippery like flowers.

For Jamee Gregory, a longtime resident of Southampton, early indicators bode well for the season. “Houses are starting to sell again,” said Gregory, who returned to Southampton last weekend after a trip to Los Angeles to find quite a different scene than the one she left. “When we left, it was very quiet and peaceful,” she said. “When we came back, it was insane. There was nowhere to park your car in town. We went to Sant Ambroeus [a restaurant in Southampton] and people were screaming and fighting over the booths. I went to Lynch’s nursery and people were fighting over the pink hibiscus,” she said, noting that garden center activity is a sign people are feeling better about the economy.

Retailers think they will be more interested in buying clothes again, too. Sure, stores like Gucci have moved out, but other stores like Chico's and Juicy Couture have moved in. And since 75 percent of business in the Hamptons is just done in a few months over the summer, more companies will open summer pop-up shops, so they can get in, make a buck, and get out when the rich people do. Or as WWD puts it, "For the first time, value has entered into the retail equation" in the neighborhood. Heavens.

But these stores want to blend in, not flaunt their good values. It's like being at a party with a bunch of rich people — you don't tell everyone there you only have one nice dress and you wore it that night for them.

J. Crew Group doesn’t view its stores in East Hampton and Southampton as seasonal. “Our following is year-round. We are not in it for a quick splash, summer-in-the-Hamptons-image thing,” said Millard “Mickey” Drexler, chairman and ceo. “We have long-term leases. We treat our stores in the Hamptons like collection stores,” which offer J. Crew’s higher-price range.

But it sounds like plenty of people are more interested in fancy stores like Scoop, where business is just fabulous.

“We are very excited about the upcoming season,” said Susan Davidson, president and ceo of Scoop, which operates a store in East Hampton that’s getting “a mini facelift” with new visuals, furniture and fixturing. “Year-to-date, we have one of our biggest increases going, and it’s not even the season yet. Anything beach related — Missoni cover-ups, Poupette gauzy summer tops and dresses, the dress business and shorts are through the roof. What women are dropping to buy dresses is unbelievable.”

Hooray! The money really is back! So, shameless consumption didn't really disappear, it just took a little vacation.

Care for some dating advice from Karen O? The Yeah Yeah Yeahs front woman was holding court at MoMA's Party in the Garden earlier this week when we hit her up for dating tips. "Wait for the FOBs, the fresh off the boats." That's your advice to women in New York City? "Yeah, it can't hurt. Honestly, most of the few men in my life, the few special men in my life, have been imports. I mean, I guess a lot of people are imports to New York City, but I got them fresh, as soon as they got here, before they got corrupted by all of the options and possibilities. When I met my boyfriend [music video director Barney Clay], he'd only been here for four months, five months, freshly moved from London. I scooped him right up. It is advice that I give, maybe not literally, but I've had the good fortune of meeting the fresh into New York City before they got the taste of the dating." Besides a brief interruption by political commentator and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, who was dressed as "King Andrew II," the official Democratic nomination of Andrew Cuomo for governor went as expected earlier today. Alleged Ponzi Schemer Kenneth Starr Targeted Stars

The SEC and the U.S. Attorney's office today charged Kenneth Starr, a Manhattan attorney and money manager whose clients include Wesley Snipes, Sylvester Stallone, Jacob the Jeweler, Steve Brill, Annie Leibovitz, and at least 25 other "socialites and luminaries in the entertainment and business worlds," according to the complaint, with running a Ponzi scheme in which he used clients' money to, among other things, purchase a "luxury $7.6 million Manhattan apartment" containing "a recreation room with a wet bar, a 32-foot granite lap pool, and a 1,500 square foot garden."

Andrew Stein, the former Manhattan borough president and one-time paramour of Ann Coulter was also arrested in conjunction with the fraud, for using funds from a shell company Starr created to pay his own personal expenses and lying to the IRS about it, and we expect assorted other boldface names to surface shortly. For instance, the Daily Beast is reporting of the person the indictment refers to as "Client No. 2":

No. 2 is identified as an “actress" who marched into Starr’s offices on April 26 demanding to know where $1 million of her money had gone. Within a day, the money had been returned to her, but the feds allege that it was not her money being paid back to her. Rather, it was the money of “client 3” — a former talent agent and his wife. The actress is none other than Uma Thurman, according to several sources close to her.

Marching! Dramatic! Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara suggested at a news conference today that Starr targeted celebrities in order to brand himself. “Starr ... used his access to famous and powerful clients to burnish an image of trustworthiness, inducing them to entrust him with management and control of their financial affairs," he said. "But as we allege, much of it was a mirage." Poor celebrities. Even their real lives are illusory.

Behind the Scenes of Madonna’s Dolce & Gabbana Sunglasses Shoot

Madonna designed some sunglasses for Dolce & Gabbana bearing the logo MDG. The project provided her with another reason to rub up on a hot young thing before Steven Klein's lens. It's unclear just who that hot young man is, but new behind-the scenes images of the campaign shoot reveal that Madonna allowed him to thrust her up against the wall of a dark metal bathroom stall. Why she'd wear her sunglasses with such a muscly youngster rubbing up against her is a mystery, but the great thing about divas is that they're not supposed to make sense. Or wear clothes. Texas Lady Loves Criminal Minds, Hates Tornado Warnings

Oh My Gosh. Listen to this angry message from a woman whose broadcast of the season finale of Criminal Minds was interrupted by a weather report.

You tell them, sister! You’re GD right! That tornado was nowhere near you! And can you IMAGINE what this phone call would have sounded like had it happened last night? During the Tim Curry episode of Criminal Minds?? Forget the tornado, take cover from this woman! I bet what constitutes “near” to her is directly outside of her house. Anything outside a fifty foot radius of her person has no bearing on her. I wonder if she is confused when things that she doesn’t want to watch on television appear on her screen. Like, “I did not specifically ask to watch this show, why would they broadcast it?” You know what? In these days of people only caring about others, it’s nice to see that someone is looking out for number one. Because screw those people who could benefit from the tornado warning. Maybe they shouldn’t have chosen to live so close to a tornado. Criminal F*cking Minds is on!

Sarah Jessica Parker Wore Another Giant Hat to the Sex and the City 2 Premiere in London

Oh, Sarah Jessica Parker is a saucy one! At the premiere of the first Sex and the City movie in London two years ago, she wore an astounding hat (well, fascinator, in technical fashion terms) that shocked the world and left us all to pity the poor person who had to sit behind her in the movie. Surely she wouldn't do that again for the premiere of the sequel, everyone probably thought. But then again, how does one top such a hat? And not just anyone, but a person whose most famous cinematic sartorial moment may have been pinning a taxidermied bird to her head? Clearly she had no choice but to wear an arm band and a bigger, bolder fascinator, the kind of thing a living bird could just perch atop without her even noticing. Her dress is by Alexander McQueen — a good warm-up to her presentation of the designer's tribute at the CFDA awards next month.

American Idol Finale Open Thread: Was Season 9 The Worst Season Ever?

I hesitate to “blame” this recent American Idol Season for its widely-regarded lameness, partly because I watched less than a quarter of the season and feel unentitled to fully complain, but more so because it’s the ninth season of a reality show that would already grow extremely repetitive within its seasons, and a ninth straight year of something so already repetitive ended up being repetitive squared (mathematic proof/excuse for Season 9’s lameness done!)

In the season’s not-defense, the entire reason I watched so little of Season 9 was precisely because every time I clicked to Idol this year, something was happening that I did not want to see and I’d just click back away. Also, even if we toss out the “inevitable repetitiveness” argument, a lot of the contestants this year were just really objectively not that good.

What do the Idol masses think? Was Season 9 the worst season yet, as many have claimed, or has the cash cow not quite sailed over that cash shark just yet? Leave your Idol Season 9 thoughts in the comments.

Below, two more clips from the finale – First up, the weirdest moment of the finale, when Dane Cook performs a comedy song for Simon Cowell and gets interrupted by Ian Benardo (hrmm? x3)

After the jump, Bret Michaels Pulls An Idol Version Of The SNL “Walk Out Behind The Person Doing An Impression Of You”:

In short, the finale did have its moments, albeit if unintentionally watchable, but the finale wasn’t enough to rescue the 9th season of a franchise which, especially now with Simon Cowell leaving, I just can’t imagine sitting through any more.

Agree/Disagree?

Eye Hate Vodka Eyeballing

Doesn’t everyone have a thing with their eyes in that you don’t want anything near/in them? When people first get contacts it takes them like one thousand tries to put the contact in because it feels super weird to put something in your eye. No one is non-squeamish about their eyes. Except, that’s a lie, because look at this new drinking trend. I hate this. I hate this so much. It’s called Vodka Eyeballing. It is what it sounds like, you take a shot of vodka…THROUGH YOUR EYE.

WHY.

WHY would someone ever do that? No one even likes to put eye drops in let alone an ENTIRE SHOT. But apparently a TON of people do this.

Reports The Daily Mail:

The website YouTube, for example, features more than 800 clips of young men and women pouring vodka into their eyes – usually in their own homes. And these are just the ones stupid enough to film themselves and post their clips online.
Another woman I spoke to this week recalled seeing her former boss, a senior figure at a well-known advertising agency, ‘drinking’ vodka through his eye at an advertising party.
There are also pages on Facebook and other social networking sites set up by ‘fans’ of ‘eyeballing’, in which people seem to revel in the dramatic inebriation which seems to follow this dangerous practice.

If I’ve ever taken a Mom-stance on one thing in this blog, it would be to implore people not to do this. Except you guys are not IDIOTS, so I don’t think that you would. I just want to be safe. Oh, also you can get a constant watery eye and/or go blind from doing this. But on the plus side, you get REAL wasted! I wonder if people do Bloody Mary eye shots the next morning.

I’m too depressed to think of a movie clip that this reminds me of.

UPDATE!! Dan Hopper provided me with a VERY appropriate video to go along with this post after the jump.

I couldn’t tell you why I laugh at this and I’m depressed by shots through the eye. Could it be as simple as the word “vagina”? Probably.

Cathy Horyn Thrilled With Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton Appointment

Sarah Burton.

Cathy Horyn on the appointment of Sarah Burton as creative director of Alexander McQueen: "She’s the only person really qualified for the job ... She was also responsible for translating Mr. McQueen’s runway collections into commercial pieces, translations which have become sharper in recent years. She is not a star, but she is very well known in the fashion world and, most important, has worked closely over the years with the pattern makers and other technical people, especially in Italy, who produce the McQueen line. In promoting the best-qualified person for the job, and not going outside the house for a name designer not intimately connected to the McQueen story, Gucci Group and McQueen executives have a very positive statement about the business." Should Betty White be on 'DWTS'?

Last night Nicole Scherzinger was the 10th star to claim the mirrored ball on "Dancing with the Stars." The lead Pussycat Doll went up against Olympic figure skater Evan Lysacek and ESPN anchor Erin Andrews and came out victorious. Many predicted that Scherzinger would win from the start based on her spectacular performances and stage presence, not to mention her extensive dance history as a member of the Pussycat Dolls. But Lysacek and Andrews gave her a good run for her money, bringing an enjoyable end to a season of controversy.

Matt Lauer Non-Mistress Also A Former Non-Lady

I know you’ve all been breathlessly following the Matt Lauer infidelity scandal. Well guess what? Alexis Houston, the woman who has been connected as a possible mistress to Lauer held a press conference to say that she never had sex with him. Cool, I don’t care. But then Page Six went and found out…she used to be a man! And her name was Wellington Houston, which has to be the most AWESOME former man name ever! To be clear, the fact that she was once a man does not preclude her from having sex with Lauer, these two facts could have nothing to do with each other. It’s just that if he did indeed sleep with her, it gets a tad more embarrassing for him. I don’t feel like he did, he seems like good people. Though maybe a bit glib (High fives!). Point being, I’m liking this twist on a story that I was only tangentially aware of.

Reports Page Six:

According to one source who has known the singer for years, Wellington had sex-change surgery three years ago after a man fell in love with the cross-dressing singer and paid for the operation.
“She told me they got married in Niagara Falls,” said our source, “but they have since separated.”

Niagra Falls! What a regular pair of Pam and Jim’s! Oh, and also she claimed to be the cousin of Whitney Houston? To defraud an eldery doctor? Then Whitney Houston sued her? Lot of stuff going on with this lady.

Hey, guess what movie this reminds me of??????

SOAPDISH!!!

Matt Lauer will be playing the roles of both Kevin Kline and Robert Downey Jr. and Alexis Houston will be playing Cathy Moriarty.

Soapdish, guys. Soapdish.

Paula Abdul Returns To Idol Finale For One Final Incoherent Somethingerother

Last night’s American Idol finale was, for the most part, disappointingly acceptable — I was hoping for the excruciating season to culminate in one final catastrophic train wreck, but the finale was fine — with the awkward exception, of course, of Paula Abdul’s re-emergence to give Simon Cowell one final sendoff, which quickly devolved into awkward sentimental kinda-jokes with some classic Paula pauses and non-sentences.

It really takes me back to the Idol glory days when every week we’d be like, “Man, Paula’s especially drunk / pilled-up tonight, does she know she’s on tv?” She does know she’s on tv. That’s just her, people:

Watch: Reporter Hammers Home His Point. PUNS!!

One would assume that one could relatively easily break a window with a strong blow of a hammer. Well prepare to have your assumptions, BUCKED, friend! Watch this reporter attempt to demonstrate a car burglary.

LOL and LOL again. The only way this could be more cartoonish is if his hammer bent backwards. He is relatively smooth (being able to flip and catch a hammer-wise) and good-natured, if not terribly strong. I hope his hand is OK. (Note: Dan Hopper believes this to be a fake. As I am in a non-cynical mood today, I choose life! I mean, that it’s real!)

So apparently it’s “Movie Clips That Slightly Correspond To The Story At Hand” Day (for me), so here is what I believe is an appropriate clip from Top Secret! (Val Kilmer’s first movie!) You’ll see what I mean after the jump:

Tom Cruise Adheres To The Jerry Maguire Model

In the June/July issue of Esquire, cover model Tom Cruise has this to say:

Because we do live in a cynical world. It’s easy to be cynical. Making the choice not to be cynical is important. You can keep dwelling on what didn’t work, or you can figure out how to fix it. Which is what being a parent is all about. You know, I’m married to such a special woman. Every night before we go to sleep, Kate and I look at each other and it’s like, How’d we do today?

I’m not arguing with anything Tom Cruise is saying here. A) Because we do live in a cynical world. I’m a part time pop culture blogger for goodness sakes. I wake up in the morning and bathe in cynicism before my breakfast of cynical toast and COJ (cynical orange juice). Pause for ten minute break while I evaluate my life choices…OK, I’m cool. And B) I don’t know what Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes say to each other before they go to bed, so I’m going to choose to non-cynically believe him. Sort of. Because, maybe this is a stretch, but my immediate reaction upon reading this quote was that Tom Cruise probably gives this speech to Katie Holmes every night before they go to bed:

He’s super lucky that Patton Oswalt didn’t write Jerry Maguire. Also, I really hope that once Katie Holmes finally gets around to seeing Jerry Maguire something like this doesn’t happen (Tom Cruise in the role of Sally Field, Katie Holmes playing Elisabeth Shue):

Sorry for the weird subtitles. In case you needed them, so you’re welcome!

Obviously this post was just an elaborate ploy to get a Soapdish clip up.
