Jha speaks on Brick Lane
Arranged marriages are almost always compromised arrangements. They require tremendous compromises and determination on the part of the less disgruntled partner in a marriage. We saw two empathetic male spouses played by Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan Khan in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, respectively.
In Brick Lane, Satish Kaushik's portrays with bridled gusto an ungainly Bangladeshi in the crowded community-driven Asian side of London , trying to cope with a hostile country and work- place, and a long-standing largely-silent wife at home who does not quite hate her overweight unromantic husband.
She just lives in a realm of alternate reality where she thinks love romance and heightened passion are matters tucked away in an unattainable corner of her heart. The wife Nazneen's giddy-headed letters from her sister back home in Bangladesh don't help her much in preserving her bearings within her four walls in claustrophobic London where her two daughters are meant to define her existence.
Director Sarah Gavron is wonderfully apt in projecting bottled passion whose fumes and aroma are just waiting to escape into the wide open fields of a Bangladeshi village where Nazneen lost her childhood dreams.
The narrative is miraculously non-judgemental about Nazneen's arid but not wretched existence in London and her husband Chanu Ahmed's pathetic inept attempts to keep home heart wife and daughters joined at the hip.
Brick Lane makes deft use of closed spaces in Nazneen's home and heart as opposed to the wide open fields that she dreams about. The inevitable infidelity, when it happens, is neither shocking nor lurid, just lustful and tragic.
Nazneen's temptation is a young libidinous Muslim guy (played convincingly by British actor Christopher Simpson). She tucks into him with the gleeful gluttony of a child left alone at home with a box of chocolates. The unlikely pair gets seriously torrid in every conceivable corner of the narrative.
The cliches in the plot about a lonely female emigre and her boorish but kind husband are negotiated with much dignity and some grace. The virtues of Brick Lane reside in the film's understated charm. Gavron states with transparent directness simple home truths about Asian housewives who lock away their desires for the sake of a settled life in a staid marriage.
Satish Kaushik's plays the cuckolded husband (not for the first time) with empathy warmth and compassion. As for Tannishtha Chatterjee she brings vital and tragic grandeur to her part of the dissatisfied wife. At times she exudes the earthy elegance of Smita Patil. The two performances and the director's proclivity to make the inherently banal incidents seem far more virginal than they actually are, make Brick Lane a film worth a look.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 28 May 2010 | 3:58 am Ranbir Kapoor parties with Rockstar director - Oneindia

Source: Entertainment - Google News | 28 May 2010 | 3:41 am Siddharth Anand speaks for the first time on Anjaana Anjaani
Director Siddharth Anand says his new film Anjaana Anjaani is inspired by the television series Friends.
"I remember when I watched Friends, I wanted to meet and know every character. That's how I want audiences to feel about Ranbir and Priyanka in Anjaana Anjaani. When Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge came out, you wanted to feel and touch Raj and Simran. That's how I want audiences to feel about Ranbir and Priyanka. By God's grace everyone in the team has given his or her best to this film."
Anjaana Anjaani has been scripted by Advaita Kala. "She wrote a chick novel called Almost Single. I asked her to develop a story by my wife Mamta. Ranbir and Priyanka had no reference points in any film for their performance. Ranbir is such a big star; Priyanka has just won the National award. These are characters going through extraordinary not easily relatable circumstances. It's about few days that two strangers spend together."
Siddharth shot in the Central Park's skating rink. "We shot in iconic New York. We had the skating rink shut down for our shoot for three days. Then we shot with Ranbir and Priyanka in NY's Café Lalo where Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks has met in When Harry Met Sally."
About the talked-about bridge sequence, "We needed to take over a bridge completely for 3-4 days. Because of 26/11 we couldn't get the necessary permission. We finally got the bridge in Kuala Lampur. They made it as easy for us as shooting in Goregaon. Thanks to our producer Sajid Nadiadwala we could shoot anywhere I wanted."
The whole film was shoot in live sound. "All my films are shot in live sound. We are releasing on 1 October. Maybe because I'm as peace-loving as Gandhiji."
Contrary to belief and expectation, Ranbir Kapoor's singing debut won't be part of the film's CD. Explains Siddharth, "Ranbir has sung a 1 1/2 minute track. But it is part of a comic scene. So he will only be singing in the film. We needed Ranbir's character not Ranbir to sing. So those who want to watch him sing will have to wait for the film.
Sighs Siddharth, "I did my first film Salaam Namaste in 2005. If I'm doing another romantic film it better be even cooler and more contemporary. Anjaana Anjaani is the riskiest film ever. I've experimented with the style and performances. If audiences believe in the couple they'll come back repeatedly to watch them. If they don't they'll reject them completely. It's so character-driven. If their performances don't work, the film doesn't."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 28 May 2010 | 3:38 am Rahman invited by Aussie high commissionerIndian music composer, A R Rahman is in high demand now. Source: Entertainment - Google News | 28 May 2010 | 1:56 am Sonam Kapoor rubbishes rumors about her not getting along with Ranbir
It's a crucial phase for Sonam Kapoor. The pretty actress has two movies releasing back to back -- Karan Johar's home-production I HATE LUV STORYS and dad Anil Kapoor's AISHA -- and the interesting aspect is, she will be seen in glam roles in both, unlike her first two films [SAAWARIYA and DELHI 6], which slotted her in gharelu, desi roles. Even otherwise, her career is on an upswing, with Anees Bazmee's THANK YOU and Pankaj Kapoor's directorial debut MAUSAM in her kitty.
"Oh yes, it looks like I have to appear in two new examinations in two consecutive months," Sonam laughs, as we discuss her makeover. In fact, Sonam had modeled for various fashion and lifestyle mags in trendy attire, which she carries off very well. "The roles in SAAWARIYA and DELHI 6 demanded traditional Indian look. If I got slotted in an image after these films, it only goes to prove that I carried off those roles well," she reasons.
While the promos of I HATE LUV STORYS have created a solid tremendous buzz, AISHA is also looking impressive, say insiders, with Sonam's performance in both being talked about. In fact, Anil Kapoor, who has produced AISHA, was so overwhelmed by its script that he decided to produce it himself. Sonam's younger sis Rhea took over the production reins and Sonam, obviously, decided to step into Aisha's sandals. Although Jane Austen's novel 'Emma' was set in 19th century England, AISHA is a contemporary film, set in New Delhi and locales of North India.
Sonam identifies with her role in AISHA, since she, like Emma, is into match-making in real life. "I do that occasionally in real life. This role, therefore, was easy for me to interpret," Sonam laughs. But matters of heart can be heart-breaking at times. Has she ever nursed a broken heart? "Never," she says.
There's talk that Sonam and her SAAWARIYA co-star Ranbir Kapoor don't see eye to eye and have decided against working with each other. "Not true! Ranbir and I are good friends. We talk to each other regularly. We were offered films in the past, but things didn't work out for several reasons. But there's no jhagda, please," she clarifies.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 28 May 2010 | 1:11 am Pritish Nandy returns to poetry, in 'Again'Pritish Nandy, who has donned multiple hats - of painter, filmmaker, columnist, journalist - brushed up his rusted knack of writing poems and after ages has come out with a book of his poetry, and he gives all credit to his friend and Oscar-winning lyricist Gulzar.Source: Entertainment News | 28 May 2010 | 1:06 am 'Dum Maaro Dum' on 4th Feb., coinciding with Abhishek's birthday
Fox Star Studios and Ramesh Sippy have announced that DUM MAARO DUM will release on February 4, 2011. This film marks the coming together of Abhishek Bachchan and director Rohan Sippy after their successful collaboration on BLUFFMASTER.
"The film is shaping up very well and the audiences should get ready to enjoy a gripping, moving film with great visual appeal, coming their way on 4th February," Ramesh Sippy says.
"We are hugely excited about DUM MAARO DUM as it has a great script, it's vibrant and contemporary and we expect the film to appeal to a wide audience. The February timing is perfect as it is strategically timed just before the World Cup cricket. The window of late January and early February works for us also as we are familiar with the release environment during that period," says Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios.
DUM MAARO DUM will be Fox Star Studio's third release in the same period as it released SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE in 2009 and MY NAME IS KHAN in 2010 during the period of late January and early February. Coincidentally, February 5 happens to be the birthday of Abhishek Bachchan, who plays the role of a fearless cop in the film.
DUM MAARO DUM is co-produced by Fox Star Studio and Ramesh Sippy Entertainment and stars Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Rana Daggubati, Pratik Babbar and Aditya Panscholi. The film's first schedule in Goa is complete and the second schedule in Mumbai is to begin in June 2010. The film, written by Shridhar Raghavan, will have new sounds keeping the title in mind and the music is created by Pritam with lyrics by Jaideep Sahni.
The movie is an edgy dramatic thriller which races through the bylanes, beach shacks and raves of Goa. Populated with unforgettable characters, punctuated with a soundtrack that moves from haunting Konkani songs to pulsating dance music and shot right in the midst of the teeming international tourist hotspots, DUM MAARO DUM takes you on a trip that will have you on the edge of your seat.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 28 May 2010 | 12:56 am Kareena not playing truant: 'Milenge Milenge' makers clarify

They say 'Two's company, three's crowd. But, Zoya Akhtar is all set to change that. She has got not one, not two, not three, and not even four but a whopping six lead actors in her next film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD). Top lining the cast of this multi-starrer are Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Spanish actress Ariadna Cabrol and the svelte Kalki Koechlin.
Even though everyone associated with this film is so very tight-lipped about this project (and they have every reason to do so), there are strong rumours that this film may just be a sequel to the cult film Dil Chahta Hai. With Zoya not in a mood to entertain any such rumours, one will only have to wait and watch if such speculation is indeed true. All that one knows for now is that the shoot of the film gets underway in Spain on June 7.

The tension over the censoring of Raajneeti is over. But not without some vital scenes featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal getting the chopper. Arjun Rampal's love-making scene with Katrina has been reduced drastically.
Says the director Prakash Jha regretfully, "It was a very aesthetically shot love making scene. Arjun and Katrina are two very beautiful people. And they made love to the camera. The Tribunal felt it was a bit too explicit for a 'UA' audience. I didn't argue."
However, Katrina who had dropped her normal inhibitions for the sake of her role and character is none too pleased with her labour of love-making going to waste.
But the director can breathe easy now. Prakash Jha's week- long battle with the censor board ended on Tuesday with the Tribunal viewing the film and granting it a 'UA' certificate. Jha had challenged the censorboard's decision earlier last week to grant Raajneeti an 'A' certificate with cuts.
Apparently, the censorboard had earlier objected to two sequences one showing the rigging of elections by fitting ballot boxes with specially designed gadgets and the other showing a female politician offering sex in exchange for an election ticket.
Jha wouldn't listen to any talk of cuts with the censorboard.
Says Jha, "An 'A' certificate brings on a specific mind-set on the audience. They think the film has sleazy content. So I preferred to let the film be referred to the Tribunal."
Jha sees the reduction of the Katrina-Arjun love-making scene as a blow. "The love scene was absolutely essential. Unlike other directors I had not shot extra footage so that the censors could take away whatever portion they liked. I had shot the love-making scene exactly the way it was meant to be. I've had to reduce it by half."
Says Jha, "It's a disappointment to all of us. I've also had to beep out the F... word uttered by Ranbir and Arjun Rampal in two different places in the plot. Ex-justice Usha Mehra who headed the Tribunal requested me to do away with the F... word. It didn't make a difference."
Incidentally several recent Hindi films were plastered with expletives in Hindi and English. Also Arjun's volatile character in Raajneeti shouts lurid and graphic expletives in Hindi at a police officer. These remain intact while the 'F' word is gone.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 27 May 2010 | 5:12 am
