Industry Roundup: Jesse Eisenberg Joins 30 Minutes or Less

Countdown: Jesse Eisenberg will reteam with his Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer in the comedy 30 Minutes or Less, also starring Aziz Ansari and Danny McBride. The movie, written by Michael Diliberti and Matthew Sullivan, revolves around a junior high school history teacher (Ansari) and a pizza delivery man (Eisenberg) who are... forced to rob a bank when one of them is strapped to a bomb vest. For people who loved the suspense of The Hurt Locker but were like "Man, this would be way more awesome as an Aziz Ansari comedy!" [HR]

Elephant In The Room: Seann William Scott and screenwriter Steve Conrad have formed Elephant Pictures, which will produce shorts, features, documentaries and episodic web content. The two bonded during the filming of 2008’s The Promotion (directed by Conrad and starring Scott), finding they shared a “bizarre sense of humor.” Scott said the company will focus on documentaries: "As I've gotten older, I've become attracted to things that have substance," he said; though of course, when you start out with Dude, Where's My Car?, there's really nothing you could do afterward that wouldn't seem excessively substantive. [HR]

Solo Pornographer: New Pornographers singer and keyboardist Kathryn Calder will strike out on her own and release her first solo album, Are You My Mother?, out August 11. Apparently the band is down with Calder’s decision, as Neko Case will be guesting on the album and fellow Pornographers Kurt Dahle and Todd Fancey will be contributing. Cute. [Pitchfork]

Fun Size Fits All: Josh Schwartz will produce Fun Size, a comedy written by Max Werner (The Colbert Report), which will be the first film taken on by Schwartz’ Fake Empire production company. The movie is said to be a cross between Superbad and Adventures in Babysitting, but set on Halloween. In other words, hijinks, pratfall and banter but with less Jonah Hill and more kids and costumes. [HR]

Just Like A Pill: Alison Pill (Milk, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World) has joined Woody Allen’s upcoming Midnight in Paris, which stars Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Carla Bruni, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Michael Sheen and Owen Wilson, and will begin shooting this summer. Yay for Pill and everything, but right now we're consumed with fantasizing about what a dinner party with this cast would be like. [Variety]

Riot Act: Indie pop group Ra Ra Riot will release a follow-up to their 2008 The Rhumb Line with The Orchard, out August 24. Andrew Maury and Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla mixed nine of the ten tracks; the other was taken care of by Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij. These indie rock bros clearly have each others' backs. [Pitchfork]

Heckling Obama Twice is One Too Many Times

During his second fundraising appearance for Sen. Barbara Boxer Tuesday night in California, Barack Obama was heckled by a protester whom he had encountered before - and, well, let’s just say it’s unlikely this guy is going to be causing any trouble for the president again anytime soon. Obama was in the middle of discussing the economy when the man yelled out, “Move faster on 'don't ask, don't tell!'"

The crowd started to boo and the man continued to shout, at which point Obama just let it all out:

“It's good to see ya,” the president said. “I have to say, you know what? I saw this guy down in L.A... [Obama had been heckled about 'don't ask, don't tell' at the first Boxer fundraiser.] Two points I want to make… he really should like buy a ticket to, if he wants to demonstrate, buy a ticket to a guy who doesn't support his point of view... The other point is maybe he didn't read the newspapers because we are working with congress as we speak to roll back 'don't ask, don't tell'... I actually think he does read the newspapers because he wasn't as - his heart wasn't in it - he said 'Do it faster.' C'mon man..."

Whitney Museum to Move to Meatpacking District in 2015

The Whitney Museum is set to undergo a major transformation, as its board voted Tuesday to begin construction on a building in the Meatpacking District that will be completed in 2015. The board also has decided to sell a group of brownstones next to the museum’s Marcel Breuer-designed building on the Upper East Side, which means the art museum will almost certainly not be expanding in its current area. Since it is unlikely the museum will have the income to maintain two buildings, it is not clear what will happen to the Breuer building; one possibility floated by the Times is that it might be shared temporarily with another institution, like the Met. The Whitney's chairman emiritus Leonard Lauder had been against the move, but changed his mind, seemingly taken - like a wide-eyed twentysomething new to the city - with the freshness of downtown: “Downtown is a new city, a new nation," he said. "Why shouldn’t the Whitney be the museum of record there?”

T.I. and Lady Gaga to 'Lick It' Together

During his recent series of press interviews, T.I. revealed a surprising nugget to MTV News about his upcoming new album, King Uncaged, due this August: one of the tracks in contention to make the LP features, believe it or not... Lady Gaga. And from the lofty praise the rapper had for the pop star, it would seem the unlikely duo got along famously:

"Phenomenal talent. Extremely proud [to work with her]. She's definitely that good. She knows what she's doing. She knows exactly what she wants people to think and say. She does everything that she needs to be done to ensure it happens. I think she's an entertainer, in all aspects of the word," he said. "She's a classic, all-around entertainer. A global star."

When pressed about the title of the Red One-produced record featuring Gaga, T.I. said that while it has not been finalized, right now it is being called “Lick It," and he added that the track allowed him to "tune in to another side of T.I." This needs to make the album, if only so we can have the chance to see T.I. sporting Haus of Gaga garb in the inevitable music video.

Community Board Backs Mosque, As Relatives of 9/11 Victims Protest

After rumblings last week that a ruling by the Landmarks Preservation Commission might halt plans for a mosque near Ground Zero, the proposal is now being protested by upset relatives of 9/11 victims. At a community board hearing held downtown Tuesday night, opponents of the mosque held up photos of loved ones killed in the attacks and held signs with messages like “Honor 3,000, 9/11 - No mosque.”

"It’s an insult. It’s demeaning to build a shrine to the very ideology that attacked the World Trade Center," said one attendee.

And a Queens man who fled from Pakistan to the U.S. forty years ago said he is nervous that the mosque could become a “training ground for terrorists.”

"I don’t like it," he said of the plan. "I’m afraid that what happened in India to me will happen to my children."

Still, there were individuals present in favor of the mosque, the Post says, who stressed that it was important to keep an open mind, claiming that rejecting the plan represented a form of "bigotry and hatred." While the community board has no official power over whether or not the estimated $100 million mosque moves ahead, it is likely to significantly impact public opinion of the project.

[NYP]

Update: Despite the protests, the community board ended up backing the proposal to build the mosque by a 29-1 vote with ten abstentions, after a four-hour discussion with over 100 people testifying both in favor of and against the plan.

Ellen DeGeneres To Start Her Own Record Label

Perhaps inspired by Simon Cowell’s recent dig at the Idol judging panel's lack of experience (“You've got to have somebody on that panel who actually knows what they're talking about,” he said of his replacement), Ellen DeGeneres has revealed she's getting into the music business. The first artist on the label will be none other than 12-year old Greyson Chance (a.k.a “Paparazzi" Boy), perhaps indicating the label’s name is reflective of the the age of its target demo. The troops will be supporting law enforcement officials by observing and monitoring traffic between official crossing points in an effort to help intercept illegal drug shipments. The White House is also expected to request $500 million in supplemental funds to pay for more federal agents, prosecutors and technology at the border. While Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was pleased, claiming the “White House is doing the right thing,” good ole' John McCain wasn’t placated: “1,200 Nat'l Guard is a first step, but it's not enough," he tweeted, "I've been calling for the Guard to secure our SW border for years - we need 6,000!"

Closing Oceanic 815 Images Were 'Visual Aid,' Not Part of Story

After the zoom in on Jack’s closing eye followed by the Lost logo which concluded the Lost series finale, several images of the Oceanic 815 wreckage appeared on television screens, leading some fans to believe that we were meant to think no passengers survived the flight’s crash landing in the first episode of the series. However, it turns out that those photographs were not actually part of the story at all. ABC added them on to “soften the transition” from the end of the series to the 11 p.m. news and, somehow, didn’t realize that they might throw off viewers’ interpretations.

"The images shown during the end credits of the Lost finale, which included shots of Oceanic 815 on a deserted beach, were not part of the final story but were a visual aid to allow the viewer to decompress before heading into the news," an ABC spokesperson wrote in an e-mail to the Los Angeles Times.

Well, now that that’s cleared up, we understand everything perfectly.

Are High 3-D Prices to Blame for Shrek 4’s Underwhelming Opening?

When Shrek Forever After, the fourth installment of DreamWorks Animation's once reliable source of jolly green, opened to a $70.8 million weekend, it stunned box-office watchers. While that may seem like a lot of money, it’s actually $35 million less than had been projected; the shock was big enough that the studio’s stock price lost almost a tenth of its value by Tuesday afternoon. Most pundits quickly blamed the waning appeal of the franchise, and Wall Street analysts deemed it especially disappointing because it underperformed despite the huge premiums that movie theaters are charging for 3-D tickets. But that may be the wrong lesson to take: Most likely, the fourth Shrek fell short precisely because of those huge 3-D surcharges.

Exhibitors, not studios, set ticket prices, and with Avatar grossing nearly $750 million domestically, they look at the new wave of 3-D as the biggest potential moneymaker since someone put snow on a cap. One studio source estimates that the cost of a 3-D ticket has gone up a whopping 22 percent in the past year; in New York City, you could pay $20 to see Shrek 4. (And as of April, there were 4,011 3-D theaters in the U.S., nearly twice the number from a year before.) People happily paid a surcharge to see Avatar because it was something they’d never seen before — but they’ve definitely seen the Shrek gang before. Three times, actually, and the last time was no fun at all; it was critically lambasted and likely dampened enthusiasm for another go-round.

Now that 3-D has become more commonplace, moviegoers could be becoming more discriminating when it comes to these prices; they may no longer be so eager to pay up for a movie that’s not an event. “Less-than-perfect 3-D coupled with exorbitant up-charges has me fearing consumer pushback,” says Chris Aronson, senior vice-president for domestic distribution at Twentieth Century Fox.

In the teeth of a recession, movie attendance jumped 4.5 percent in 2009 and the industry saw a record haul of over $10 billion, because people decided that going to the movies was actually their cheapest entertainment option. But with the jacking-up of 3-D prices, that may no longer be the case. And studios fear that a backlash may be starting, just in time for the release of all the pricey 3-D blockbusters that they green-lit after Avatar.

“We cannot control what [theaters] charge,” said another exasperated top distribution executive at a major studio. “And we have to be very careful what we say about this: It’s illegal for us to even think about speaking to them about what they charge. But this is insanity.”

Shrek’s box office numbers suggest that consumers are already backing away from reflexively running to a pricey, “premium” viewing experience: According to distribution insiders, the sequel made only 62 percent of its grosses from 3-D. By comparison, Disney’s Alice in Wonderland made 72 percent of its gross from 3-D presentations, and even DreamWorks Animation’s own How to Train Your Dragon made 67 percent of its gross from 3-D showings. (Clash of the Titans only reached 52 percent; bad reviews were part of it, but a bigger factor was that it opened a week after Dragon and there were fewer 3-D theaters available to open in.) And look at the even more expensive IMAX 3-D option: Only 6.7 percent of Shrek’s grosses came from those screenings, as compared to Alice and Dragon, which both landed between 8 to 9 percent.

Patrick Corcoran, director of media and research for the National Association of Theater Owners, says that the number of 3-D films in release is too small to determine whether people are rebelling at the cost or the quality, but he does imply that in this case, it may have been the movie’s fault. “Look at the film and people’s interest in it,” he says. “Both Shrek 2 and Shrek 3 were not shown in 3-D, and yet they still did better.”

Interestingly, while NATO tracks ticket prices, its membership has voted not to track 3-D prices separately: The group only calculates an average price based on all theaters, regardless of how many dimensions are offered. (It’s a lot more palatable to release the stat that on average, ticket prices are only up 5.7 percent from last year, rather than admitting that 3-D prices went up 22 percent year to year.)

The biggest irony in all this comes from DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg possibly being the first victim of 3-D pricing; he’s the format’s main booster, and only last month was touting higher 3-D ticket prices as the tonic for badly sagging DVD sales. So much for happily ever after.

Bachelorette Contestant Learns That Premature Ejaculation Isn’t As Cool As It Used To Be

Meeting girls is a lot harder than it sounds. As a blogger who spends most of his day tied to a laptop, I know all too well the pitfalls that await me whenever I venture into the “outside world” and try to strike up a conversation with a member of the fairer sex. You know how it is, right guys? Just when you think you’ve landed on the perfect conversation starter, you find yourself getting all distracted by their pretty hair and pretty smiles and pretty smells. We’ve all been there.

That said, I’ve picked up a few tricks of the proverbial trade over the years and now find talking to women slightly less intimidating than I used to. I have been passing on the secrets that I’ve learned through a book that I recently wrote called How To Pick Up Trashy Women. Although my tips have saved countless dozens of individuals from conversational peril, I truly regret that I never had time to meet with 27 year-old construction engineer and Bachelorette contestant Derrick before he got some precious 1:1 time with Ali Fedotowsky, the titular Bachelorette, on the season premiere that aired last night. If I had, I would’ve surely explained to him that it would’ve been in his best interest NOT to share with Miss Fedotowsky the story about how he acquired the nickname “Shooter.”

Watch and learn, gents. Watch. And. Learn.

Jamie Foxx Interviews T.I., Reminds Us He Can Pretty Much Do Anything

T.I. initially kept quiet after being sprung from the big house, but he’s recently ratcheted up the publicity push, granting interviews to Larry King, Funkmaster Flex, and even Access Hollywood. Oh, and Jamie Foxx, for some reason. That last one is definitely our favorite, though: After getting a staggeringly sycophantic introduction out of the way, Foxx — who collaborated with T.I. on the excellent “Live in the Sky” — falls into a nice rhythm with his old buddy, getting him to speak directly on the thought process behind the attempted purchase of weapons that got him locked up. “I just started collecting firearms,” says T.I., of the aftermath of the death of his friend Philant Johnson. “After I had an attempt made on my life and my homeboy died in my arms, I had to go back to his mom and his daughter, and those people were still at-large, and I was still getting threats … ” So, yeah, surprisingly, it’s a pretty good interview! Movie star, popular singer, and, now successful celebrity interviewer … man, that Jamie Foxx does it all.

Does Urban Outfitters Knock Off Bone Jewelry by Indie Designers?

Crowe's rib cage is at left, and Urban's is at right.

Jewelry designer Lillian Crowe, 27, makes pieces that look like the rib cage, spine, and skull of a bull. She sells these pieces at the Brooklyn Flea, and released the designs last March. She has noticed similar pieces sold at Urban Outfitters under a label called Waylaid. She believes they may have knocked her off, along with Erica Bradbury, who designs a line called Species by the Thousands. Bradbury and Urban both make a shark-jaw piece, but she doesn't necessarily think she's a knockoff victim.

“It is tricky and difficult to have ownership on designs that rely on casting found objects — whether it's bones or miniature knives,” said Bradbury, adding, “Their version of my shark jaw necklace is more stylized.”

Right, who's to say one or the other thought first that the rib cage of a bull would make a cool accessory? The Brooklyn Paper reports:

A source deep inside the jewelry business said that the retailer knows that it has a reputation for ripping off indie designers.

“When Urban buys something from us, they specifically ask if it's ‘inspired by’ someone,” said the source, who dared not go on the record for fear of endangering a potentially lucrative business relationship. “They know they have this reputation, and are trying to [dispel it].”

Urban hasn't commented and Crowe is trying to take the possible knockoff as a compliment. In the meantime, sounds like we all need some bones to hang around our necks! Spikes are so over.

For Urban Outfitters, it’s bling there, done that [Brooklyn Paper]

Karolina Kurkova Explains Her Post-Baby Body May Not Be the Product of Magic

The stunning Karolina Kurkova didn't just pop out the kid and look super-skinny after nine months of being the lazy, indulgent sort of pregnant woman who ate whole tubs of ice cream every day. Karolina, who works out with Tracy Anderson tells W she dieted and exercised:

I didn't gain much weight, and I think the secret was really staying active throughout my pregnancy. I did Pilates, a lot of weight training, I walked a lot and I traveled. I lived my life, you know? And I was eating really healthy, taking good supplements and vitamins, drinking green juices and just making sure I was putting the best stuff in my body. I didn't eat much junk, and I was lucky I didn't really crave it, either. So I'm all about listening to your body. But obviously you want to try to give it more natural foods, and fruits, good vitamins, fish oils, fiber. Lots of fiber when you're pregnant! ... We still do a lot of fresh green fruit juices, and try to cook as much as we can so that everything's light, delicious and gluten-free. We don't really eat anything that's white, or processed.

Of course this might not work for other people who, you know, crave food, can't afford a personal trainer, and don't have Karolina's rare model genes.

M.I.A. Continues to Demonstrate Her Commitment to Making This Summer Interesting

M.I.A.'s new album, /\/\/\Y/\, isn't out until July 13, but in the run-up to the record's release, the singer has already provided us with more bananas pull quotes than most pop stars produce in their entire careers. Besides naming her album the aforementioned chicken scratch, she has ragged on Bieber, ragged on Gaga, and gotten a ginger kid fake shot in the head. Now in a new interview with Nylon, she is spreading the word about the dangers of the Internet: "Google and Facebook were developed by the CIA, and when you’re on there, you have to know that.” While we are psyched to learn that the CIA is this competent, we are even more jazzed by the the news that M.I.A. spent her teenage years hanging out with Tupac. "I was always going out to L.A. because my cousin lived there, and she knew all the Bloods and Crips," she says. "So I was hanging out with her, having crazy times, and then I’d come back and be like, ‘I hung out with Tupac last week!’ and nobody knew who he was!” Please, M.I.A.: Keep 'em coming. The summer will be dull without you.

Mayor Bloomberg Is Efficient With Employees

Mayor Bloomberg's propensity for hiring employees to perform duties in both his public and private lives has come under scrutiny again. One of his aides, Allison Jaffin, earns $117,818 working in the mayor's office, and time-and-a-half for 20 to 30 hours a week of planning Bloomberg's private events and coordinating them with his public ones. Bloomberg pays Jaffin out of his own pocket for the time she spends doing work for Private Citizen Bloomberg, though, so we're not sure what the big deal is. [WSJ]

Google Drop-Down-Suggestions: Snooki Wins

Earlier today, I just could not remember Elijah Wood’s name.  I knew there was a J in it somewhere, but beyond that, I was lost.  So I went to Google and began to type “guy who played Frodo.”  But by the time I got to the word “guy,” Google already had some suggestions for me.

Snooki was three of the suggestions.  Do you have any idea how many people have to be searching for you before you’re a woman who’s name comes up three times when someone’s searching for a “guy who?”  That is nuts.  Good for her.  And she kind of does look like a thumb.  Let’s call it four.

Times Promises a Blogger-Friendly Paywall, But Will That Work?

"Once the pay model is implemented next year, the majority of our readers will be unaffected when using the site and will continue to have the same experience they have always had," Times spokeswoman Stacy Green told Peter Kafka today, of the metered paywall that the paper is set to erect in June 2011. "The pay model will be designed so readers that are referred from third-party sites such as blogs will be able to access that content without hitting their limit, enabling NYTimes.com to continue being a part of the open web." This statement was issued as a response to a blog post by Jeff Bercovici yesterday, which wondered: "Will the New York Times' Pay Wall Chase Away Bloggers?"

Bercovici raised the question after a report from the Project for Excellence in Journalism found that 80 percent of the links to news outlets from blogs go to four traditional-media sites: the BBC, CNN, the Times, and the Washington Post. The Wall Street Journal, which has a substantially larger subscriber base than both of those papers, doesn't appear on the short list — even though the most popular subjects linked to by blogs are business and economic news. "That, of course, is because the Journal has dwelled for years behind a pay wall that, while highly permeable, is still an effective deterrent to bloggers, who don't want to direct their readers to dead ends," writes Bercovici. The Times, in their statement, seems to have addressed that conflict. They won't get hit by this blog-linkage drop-off because they'll let bloggers give access to entire articles for free!

The problem with this logic is that the Journal already does that. As any major blogger knows, you can just e-mail the Journal and they'll give you an open link to most stories that you can share with your readers. Not to mention, it's pretty easy to get readers to a Journal story if you want to. The Times doesn't even know yet how their paywall programming will work, and probably won't until the end of the summer. But if the functionality of their loophole for bloggers is at all similar to the one the Journal already uses, then chances are — as is demonstrated by the Journal's relationship with blogs — a whole lot of them will be too lazy, or too much in a hurry, to take advantage of it.

Expect Angelina Jolie to Grace Magazine Covers Again

Magazine expert Samir Husni recently pontificated in the Daily Beast about the shift from mega-celebrities to models and lesser-celebrities on magazine covers. "What else do you really want to know about Angelina Jolie? With a lot of these celebrities, there’s nothing left to show unless they actually take their clothes off," he said. So true, but! Angelina Jolie has Salt coming out, and we're guessing most major fashion magazines wouldn't pass up a cover with her, naked or not. And we're not hoping for any terribly exciting Angie covers, either, because she's already breast-fed on the cover of W, so what else can she do?

Vanity Fair, which reportedly booked Jolie for the August issue, will have to figure that out. Although we don't much care how they shoot her, because we suddenly feel excited by the prospect of seeing her on the cover of a non-tabloid magazine again. People are always exciting when they disappear for a while and then come back. And those people are even more exciting when they're married to Brad Pitt and globe-trot with an army of babies swarming around them like shin guards.

Other August covers reportedly include Drew Barrymore for Elle, Ali Larter for Lucky, and Dakota Fanning, who is now 16, for Marie Claire. Stefano Tonchi's first cover for W will reportedly be Jon Hamm and Rebecca Hall, who co-star in a movie together.

Senator Says President Obama ‘Needs to Take a Valium’

President Obama paid a visit to the Senate Republican Conference today to have a direct give-and-take on current issues like immigration, the oil spill, and financial reform. Though Obama called the meeting "a good, frank discussion on a whole range of issues," and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said it was "a good exchange, a candid exchange," some people were left more bitter than before. "The more he talked, the more he got upset," said Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas. “He needs to take a Valium before he comes in and talks to Republicans and just calm down, and don’t take anything so seriously."

Carrie Bradshaw’s Most-Debatable Hairstyle

Carrie's half-up, half-curled, half-crimped Sex and the City 2 hairstyle, which she wears to be best man at Stanford's wedding, is perhaps the most distracting fashion element of the film. When we watched these scenes we could not focus on anything going on except that hairstyle, because it frankly looked to us like one of those hair accidents. Like she tried some new products and wanted it to look one way — or it did look another way earlier in the day — but then wound up looking kind of bad so she put half of it up to try to hide it. So what gives? Carrie's hairstylist Mandy Lyons explained to bellaTV:

We knew that we wanted to do a different play on some 80s textures … I think because she was wearing that suit and she was the best man we just decided to do something completely out there, and it’s the kind of hair do where you’re gonna hate it or love it.

A Review Of The New Jello Mousse Temptations

“Because after you’ve washed the bills and paid all the dishes… It’s finally me o’clock.”

I am a complete sucker for food advertisements targeted towards women.  I think the eDiets food looks delicious and Lean Cuisine frozen dinners seem incredibly fast and easy.  So, when I started seeing ads for these new Jello Mousse Temptations, I was through the moon.  I searched every grocery and convenience store in my neighborhood looking for them, but they just didn’t have them anywhere.  Six weeks passed; no luck.  But, finally, last night…. I found them.

Ohhhhhh yeah.  Let’s review it.  First test:  Will it look all fluffy and airy like it does in the commercial?  Indeed it does!

But how does it taste?  Okay!  It tastes okay.  It tastes like Nerf pudding.  And I like it.

Verdict:  Ladies, go nuts.

John Galliano Will Play Himself in a Film About Isabella Blow

André Leon Talley blogged in great detail about all his fabulous schmoozings at Naomi Campbell's 40th-birthday celebration in Cannes, where Grace Jones performed. Talley discovered in talking to milliner Philip Treacy that John Galliano, who attended wearing a "vest and huge Mad Hatter top hat," will appear in a film about Isabella Blow's life.

I caught Treacy, in an Alexander McQueen smoking with a black shawl collar spliced with gold lamé, to thank him for all those gorgeous Grace Jones hats. We had not hugged since Isabella Blow’s funeral three years ago, and he shared fabulous news: He has a producer to do a film on Isabella, and Galliano has already confirmed to play himself. Who will play Isabella? Treacy has a great trick up his hat, and it’s going to rock the world, but he cannot reveal it until this major new talent confirms.

We wouldn't want to see Galliano play any character in any film other than the one he already is.

Most Italian Sentence Ever Printed

Wow. This sentence is literally the nation of Italy:

Martin Scorsese has reportedly said that he wants Al Pacino and Robert De Niro to star in his Frank Sinatra biopic.

Wait…which one of them’s gonna play Sinatra? And is the biopic gonna start when Sinatra’s 60? Or are they gonna CGI one of their faces onto a midget, a la Little Man?

There’ll be plenty of time for questions and setting opening credits to “Gimmie Shelter” later. In the meantime, it’s time to present that sentence with the award it has rightfully earned:

Ian McKellen Gets Very Reasonably Upset About A Very Dorky Thing

When I first moved to New York, I lived in Harlem.  Roughly one out of every four times I went to the bodega on my corner, somebody would yell, “Hey, Harry Potter!”  I don’t even wear glasses, but I suppose I was the closest thing they get to a British wizard walking around 130th Street.  And fair enough.  I, not being a classically trained award winning actor, was not terribly annoyed with people falsely yelling that I was in the Harry Potter movies.  But, Sir Ian McKellen is very unlike me in this way.  From Contact Music:

Sir Ian McKellen gets frustrated when people think he is Dumbledore from ‘Harry Potter’.

The 71-year-old actor confesses he is a fan of his character in ‘Lord of the Rings’, white bearded Gandalf, but he gets annoyed when people mistake him for Dumbledore from the ‘Harry Potter’ movie series.

Ian McKellen was Gandolf in Lord of the Rings.  But he keeps on getting mistaken for Dumbledore from Harry Potter.  Apparently, even Whoopi Goldberg made this mistake some months back on The View.  I have no idea why, but this story makes me so happy.  I can’t describe to you how much I want to hear Ian McKellen yell “I was Gandalf, not Dumbledore!”  I want that to happen and then for that to be my ring tone.  If any of you do a good Ian McKellen impression, please record yourself yelling that and send it to me.  I will make you famous on my Pantech Duo.

Addendum:  Interestingly enough, a man who was working on a roof at 148th Street once yelled “Elijah Wood” at me.  It was more accurate than the oft used Harry Potter snap, but actually ruffled my feathers a little bit.  People in Harlem just don’t understand how it feels to be singled out because of race.

And That Is Why You Don’t Wear A Tee Shirt That Says P***y On It To Court

This is the best news story of the day.  From the Huffington Post:

Jennifer LaPenta did not even have to be in court the day she was held in contempt and jailed. The 20-year-old woman had left the gym and accompanied a friend to court when the judge spotted her t-shirt and flipped.

The shirt, which read “I have the p***y, so I make the rules,” was apparently too offensive for Lake County Judge Helen Rozenberg, who “singled her out from the gallery and charged her with contempt of court” in early May.

First of all, I’m already surprised that she wore a shirt that said p***y on it to the gym.  Clearly you only wear that shirt to your cousin’s pool party once in 1996 after you buy it at Spencer’s Gifts.  But then this woman wore it to court!  And then she went to jail while wearing a shirt that says she makes the rules. What a great story.

Diddy On Inside The Actor’s Studio Raises The Question: What’s Below Rock Bottom?

Ripping on Inside The Actor’s Studio for its simultaneous pretentiousness and kiss-assedness towards its frequently barely-even-actors guests has been a widely-accepted criticism for over a decade now — for me, it dates back to the millisecond I heard James Lipton tell Geena Davis that Earth Girls Are Easy is a “deceptive film” — but what happens when that criticism is well-established and the show still manages to dumbfound you with its guest selection?

Let’s find out! Here’s Sean “Diddy” Combs describing his preparation for his role in Get Him To The Greek. Pay attention, acting students: You’ll learn more in this two-minute clip than you would in two years of reading about Meisner and Stanislavski describing how they would’ve approached their pseudo-cameo appearances in a Judd Apatow summer comedy:

'Law & Order': How can we miss you if you never go away?

The central plot of last night's final new episode of "Law & Order" mattered less than all the stuff going on around it. It was the unexpectedly abrupt conclusion of the series after NBC unveiled its fall schedule last week, and "L&O" was nowhere to be seen. It gave us some closure to the season-long subplot about the cancer diagnosis for S. Epatha Merkerson's Lt. Van Buren. And Olympic star and prima "Law & Order" fan Lindsey Vonn made a cameo appearance.
