Lost Finale a Huge Success — At Making Us Want to Buy Stuff From Target

While people on Twitter battle each other, Jack and Smokey-Locke style, over whether tonight's Lost finale was satisfying or a huge stinking disappointment, we'd just like to say that we were totally delighted by Target's Lost-themed ads for smoke detectors, barbecue sauce, and computer keyboards. Can we have more of these, please? How about one for Dramamine showing the crash of Flight 815? Or one for window guards with Locke being pushed out that high-rise his dad? We'll have lots more coverage of the finale in the morning, but for now, enjoy these commercials.

Treme Recap: Down Here in the City of Misrule

"Stop resisting!" the cops yell at a character in Treme as they arrest him, and seriously, message received: I'm no longer resisting. How can I, after an episode so emotionally brutal and narratively satisfying? "Smoke My Peace Pipe" is tough to watch, but pretty amazing to behold. Find out who made a stand, who bowed out, and who lost faith after the jump.

In a New Orleans courtroom, Toni, Ladonna, Mama, and the state's attorney appear in front of Judge Tim Reid. "In 22 years as a judge ... " he says, and the state's attorney gives an "uh-oh" look. He gives a long speech about how he often tries to defend New Orleans, but seriously, y'all, this is embarrassing. He apologizes to Mama and gives the state 72 hours to habeas the corpus. It is nice seeing Tim Reid again, and nicer still that Treme is leading to a little Frank's Place revival. I remember that show as an early example of the critic's favorite that, despite bounteous love from the press, no one ever watched — little wonder that David Simon is a fan.

Credits! The Real Davis co-wrote this one! With David Mills, R.I.P.

Albert Makes a Stand
Albert and a couple of his crew cut a lock on Calliope and then sneak into one of the projects. He's staying in someone's mama's apartment and tells them to call the reporters as soon as he's in. Once the news trucks show up, Albert calls the cops, and soon there's a bona fide Media Event going on.

After a nice calm interview with the local news, Albert retreats into the apartment and lets the cops pound on the door. Soon, other squatters are breaking in, and one hangs a banner from the window reading "MY HOME."

Albert's visited by Sergeant Johnson of the NOPD's community-relations division. "Kind of a half-assed standoff," Albert complains. "We're not looking to start something," the sergeant replies. Johnson then gives Albert a politics lesson. If the voters wanted the projects open, they'd be open. But the people in New Orleans who vote — "black and white both" — haven't said boo. If Albert's still here tomorrow afternoon, he says, he'll be arrested. "Thank you for your visit, sergeant," Albert says, "and come again."

So the next afternoon they come again, this time through the front door with a bad attitude. They close the shades and demand that he get on his knees. When he refuses, one cop says, "Fuck that Injun shit" and takes him down. "Stop resisting!" they shout. "Stop resisting!"

Antoine Loses a Friend
Antoine's playing in the airport welcome gig he'd originally set up for his old teacher, who's back in the hospital. The group is tight and fun, even though no one exactly loves getting paid by check. ("I look like Thurston Howell?" a disgruntled clarinetist asks.) It's Antoine who's disgruntled, though, when trombonist Troy Andrews and his trumpeter brother James come through the airport on their way back from the Portland Jazz Festival and spy Antoine at this $100-a-night gig. Soon they're sitting in, and Antone and Troy have a 'bone-off — Antoine's eventually forced to tip his cap. Because this is New Orleans, everyone in the airport sings along instead of being like, "You fuckers are pretty loud for an airport."

Antoine's mentor dies, and at the funeral, a tear rolls down Antoine's cheek as he sees an old trombonist's coffin. (By the way, whoever that woman is singing absolutely DESTROYED "His Eye Is On the Sparrow.") The teacher's daughter gives Antoine her dad's trombone, but Antoine demurs and leaves it with family — her son.

Davis Bows Out, and Janette Starts Again
Davis delivers some more campaign EPs to a local record store, who's already sold 720 copies and is hungry for more. The disparity between this and his dusty, untouched consignments at Tower is hilarious. Nevertheless, Davis seems a little stymied in his next step, as a conversation with Jacques Morial yields some important issues, but ones that are hard to write funny songs about. "If New Orleans gets whiter," Morial points out, discussing how the infrastructure is failing black residents trying to return home, "the state slides from purple to red." Davis, ever practical, can't figure out anything that rhymes with "infrastructure." Morial looks around Davis's house and says, "Man, you could hide a dead hooker in here and no one'd know."

Meanwhile, Janette sells her tablecloths to another chef (hey, Grub Street! Who is that?) and uses her "too little, too late" SBA loan to buy a trailer and fix it up as a guerrilla kitchen. She asks Jacques — who, by the way, seems to be sporting a fine pair of Hammer pants — if he wants in, but he's already gotten a new job. TRAGEDY! Someone start a petition right now, "MAKE SURE JACQUES GETS MORE SCENES WITH JANETTE ON TREME" — and I am not even kidding.

Ladonna's brother-in-law, Judge Williams, meets Davis for lunch and tells him he's a fan. But then he gets serious and asks Davis to quit the race. He's polling at 4 percent but siphoning votes from the judge's candidate. "I am here to offer you something," Williams says, reaching into his pocket, and an overjoyed Davis asks, "A bribe?!" Williams gives him a get-out-of-jail-free card, literally — his cell-phone number on the back of a business card. Davis shakes on it.

A sad-eyed Davis brings a basket of food to Janette's door. She apologizes for the state of her house, but he says, "I'm not company. I'm your friend."

"With benefits," she says, smiling.

"With or without," he replies, gently. She smiles and lets him in. So: With!

At a pre–Mardi Gras street fair, Janette cooks on the Rolling Thunder Chef Express and Davis works the counter. That food looks good. "You gonna ditch me and sit in with the band?" she asks him. "Not a chance," he says, then looks wistfully at the band.

Annie Blows It
Busker Steve Earle sets Annie up with an audition for the Pineleaf Boys, a Cajun band going on a three-week Canadian tour. "I gotta talk to Sonny," she tells him. "I figured," he says. Sonny gives her a medium-to-large guilt trip before telling her, "If you wanna do it, you should do it."

Despite sounding great when she practices, though, she completely blows the audition, in a scene that's really very tough to watch. "It's not about the notes," one of the flinty, wisdom-spouting Cajuns says. (Let's call him Ray!) "It's about the feelin' of the music. I'm just guessin' — you got trouble in your heart?" Ha, yes, she does have trouble in her heart, and Cajuns are mystical musical psychotherapists!

Creighton, Toni, and Ladonna in the City of Misrule
Creighton reads to his class from an 1880 Lafcadio Hearn essay about New Orleans. Hearn complains of fraud, civic idiocy, and the like, but ends: "But it is better to live here in sackcloth and ashes than it is to own the entire state of Ohio." "Day by day, year by year," Creighton pronounces, "New Orleans conjures moments of artistic clarity and urban transcendence that are the best that Americans as a people can hope for." With that in mind, Creighton takes his big box of novel research out to the back shed, fires up his computer, and stares at a blank screen, pausing only to bark at Toni now and then when she asks how it's going.

Toni and Ladonna get access to a database with photos of every OPP prisoner held outside the parish. After flipping through a cavalcade of photos, Ladonna is furious — David isn't in there. Toni gets a list of all OPP prisoners who've died in custody, and Ladonna recognizes a name — her cousin, Jerome. "But he's alive," she says. Toni asks if maybe David could have taken Jerome's name, the way that Keevon White took his. "We're gonna have to look at this body," Toni says.

Creighton prints out some pages — for a new YouTube rant, not his novel. He apologizes if he's making a pest of himself. "I would hate to exacerbate any sense of Katrina fatigue in the nation at large," he says. But soon his target is off Anderson Cooper and on his own city, where the initial post-storm solidarity has given way to the realities of a messy electoral campaign. Forget urban transcendence, Creighton says. Today's David Simon Thesis Statement is a doozy, and reflects the bitterness of this episode: "Down here in the city of misrule, we are always our own worst enemy."

Elsewhere in the city of misrule, Toni and Ladonna have arrived at the endless sea of refrigerated semi trucks that house the city's unclaimed dead. Inside one of them is David's battered body, which Ladonna I.D.'s by nearly collapsing and fleeing into the parking lot. The examiner tells Toni that David's death certificate says he died of a cerebral hemorrhage after an accidental fall from the top bunk.

Outside, Ladonna lights a cigarette and stares at the rows of trucks that stretch out before her, each holding brothers and sisters and sons and daughters of New Orleans. This sequence, by the way, is completely astonishing, reminiscent of the impact of all those bodies laid out in a high-school gym in The Wire. Ladonna tells the medical examiner that she will deal with arrangements after Mardi Gras. "He been here five months, he can be here a few days longer." Back at her mama's house, she lies about what she did that day, and then takes a drink.

Watch J.J. Abrams Say Lost Is Not About That Thing It Turned Out to Sort of Be About

Back in 2005 J.J. Abrams promised that one of the most popular theories about Lost was not true. In 2006, Damon Lindelof did the same. They were so convincing in their denials we even guessed this theory was one of the eight greatest probably wrong theories about Lost. Well, spoiler alert! It turns out a J.J. Abrams-Damon Lindelof promise is only kind of good!

We're sure in the weeks to come, there will be lots of discussion about the distinctions between "purgatory" and "heaven" and "the afterlife" and "being dead" and "misleading information" and "flash-sideways is not the island" and "when did the Lost creators actually know how the show was going to end" and "why didn't Darlton care at all about the show's mythology?!" but in the instant aftermath of the finale, it seems that something sort of like purgatory, insofar as purgatory is a place full of dead people, did in fact have something to do with this here series called Lost.

With this in mind, watch J.J. Abrams tell a crowd at the Paley festival, "Well [the theory] that I like, and the one that everyone was talking about a while to me, is the purgatory one, and though that's not what it is, it is such a great idea... But that isn't literally what [the island] is."

And then read Lindelof say, "People who believe that they're in purgatory or that they're subjects of an experiment are going to start reassessing those theories based on the fact that we are literally showing you the outside world."

Sure, Abrams and Lindelof weren't totally lying: the island itself was probably not purgatory! But the finale did involve afterlife-issues in a more fundamental way than either suggest. So, all of you, the ones who watched the first episode of Lost and said, "Hey! I bet this is purgatory" and then spent the next six years fighting with people about how you were still right, even though no less than J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof said you were wrong? Well, you were sort of wrong, but not as wrong as other people! So, sleep well, and dream of dead soul mates holding hands in a church.

The Lost Finale: What Did You Think?

Okay, first of all: I, Hater, cannot do anything but adore an episode in which Sayid and Shannon — just as I'd hoped! — literally make out in public, practically stripping off their clothes and doing it in an alley, causing everyone else at my Lost-watching party to scream in disgusted agony as I cheered and waved my hands around.

I really didn't expect that much wish-fulfillment.

I'm also bizarrely looking forward to recapping. I haven't looked at reactions online yet but I expect it to be a free-for-all of agitation.

And as for the larger issue, which we can simply term the "WTF" issue...

The people at this party are huge Lost fans, who've been watching together for years. A Sawliet 'shipper. A man who goes on and on about how great the structural experimentation has been. People who grade on a curve! Not snarky haters. Also, they're mostly drunk on something called "Elmotinis."

They sound to varying degrees confused, annoyed and angry. Not about the rest of the episode so much, but about the final church conversation and the Jack's open eye/beach sequence.

There are discussions about the concept of "Bardo."

One person believes it was all Jack's dream.

There's a lot of freaked out discussion about Christian Shephard's afterlife goodness, questions about purgatory, and a general enraged sense that none of this made any sense at all.

"They were just juggling, juggling, juggling, and the balls had to fall," said one friend sadly.

There's some talk about Scientology. A mention of Falun Gong.

MUCH talk of Narnia — with both my husband and my host are comparing this to The Last Battle.

But weirdly, I'm feeling sanguine, because while they never resolved many absolutely key plot elements (why did the Others act the way they did when the Losties arrived? What in hell was up with the pregnant women dying?), and while they bracketed the whole thing with this Jacob/Smokey crap, while the shove-the-cork-in-the-hole sequence was so Freudian even Freud would have giggled, it was daring — I'll give it that. It was actively unpredictable. There were nice performances, plus the value-added nostalgia of everyone's breakthrough flashbacks. And after a season of corny and frustrating missteps, from Tina Fey to the entire Temple arc, punctuated by one fun Desmond episode, I didn't expect it to make sense, I just wanted it to be interesting enough to talk about with people.

Maybe after I sleep, it will make sense.

What's your theory?

Vulture Learns that Paula Abdul Has Finally Picked a Post-Idol Reality Series

CBS has won the Paula Abdul lottery: Vulture has confirmed that the former American Idol judge, who has been mentioned in connection with countless new shows but up until now committed to none, has signed a deal to join the Eye network's future reality contest, Got to Dance. She'll be lead judge and executive producer of the mash-up of So You Think You Can Dance and America's Got Talent, which is based on a show of the same name that aired earlier this year on Britain's Sky TV.

It's expected CBS — or perhaps Paula herself, via Twitter? — will make the news official as early as Monday. Abdul's interest in the project had been speculated about before, but as Paula watchers know, there's a big difference between Abdul being talked about for a show and actually signing a contract. She had also been in deep talks with ABC for a new Star Search; there was talk of a deal with NBC for a Bollywood-style dance spectacular series; and, of course, she's forever being mentioned as a possibility for Simon Cowell's The X Factor.

But after all this wooing, she finally picked a suitor. Is it because her guest appearance on the Idol finale is fast appearing, and she wanted to show the old gang that she was employable? More likely it's because, in addition to being named exec producer and lead judge of her new show, she's also expected to be positioned as a creative partner, mentor and coach; essentially, she'll be Got to Dance's Simon Cowell. Translated, this means you can probably believe all those reports about Abdul's reps making serious demands of anyone requiring her services (like needing a private jet to guest star on Ugly Betty).

CBS has ordered at least eight episodes of Got to Dance, an insider said. But the show — which differs from SYTYCD in that it allows amateurs of all skill levels and ages to participate — is unlikely to be ready before midseason 2010-11, in part because CBS's other unscripted shows (including new hit Undercover Boss) are doing so well. Shine Group's Reveille (The Biggest Loser) is producing, and Elisabeth Murdoch — Rupert's offspring — is taking an executive producer credit.

But Paula finally settling on her first big post-Idol reality series deal doesn't mean that the X Factor chatter will stop. Vulture has heard that at various points in her discussions with other networks, Abdul's camp (which, as of just a few months ago, now includes high-powered agency UTA) made it clear the star needed to have the flexibility to serve as a coach/judge on X Factor, should she be asked to appear on that show. Such cross-network duties are very rare, however, so it's unclear whether CBS actually agreed to such a provision.

Rumors About Lady Gaga’s Privates Finally Debunked?

If all the evidence mounting against Lady Gaga having a penis (this picture, her video for "Telephone," etc.) still hasn't convinced you, the Times of London has a story for you. The paper sent a writer out with Ms. Gaga and the two of them went to a sex club in Berlin (naturally). This is where that journalist obtained the answer to one of modern music's most vexing questions:

"A minute later, Gaga springs up, and beckons for me to follow her. Weaving her way down a series of corridors, we eventually end in — the VIP toilet.

"You’re wearing a jumpsuit,” Gaga says, with feminine solidarity. “You can’t get out of one of those in the normal toilets.”

As I start to arduously unzip, Gaga sits on the toilet with a cheerful, “I’m just going to pee through my fishnets!”, and offloads some of those whiskies.

For the first year of her career, massive internet rumours claimed that Gaga was, in fact, a man — a rumour so strong that Oprah had to question her about it, when Gaga appeared on her show.

Perhaps uniquely among all the journalists in the world, I can now factually confirm that Lady Gaga does not have a penis. That rumour can, conclusively, die."

There you have it. Not only does Lady Gaga not have male parts, but she doesn't use toilet-seat covers.

Cleric Warns of New Attacks on Americans

Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born radical Muslim cleric who inspired Faisal Shahzad, warned in a video released this weekend that new attacks on Americans are coming. In the video, Al-Awlaki encourages Muslims to kill American civilians in retaliation for what he claims is a campaign by the U.S. military to kill civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan. Al-Awlaki, who is likely in Yemen, is among the CIA's most wanted terrorists because he speaks English and has used his Internet sermons to inspire Jihadists. He's also on a list of people whom the U.S. military is allowed to assassinate. [CNN]

Shrek Forever After Wins the Box Office

The fourth installment of Shrek did what everyone expected and destroyed the competition at the box office this weekend with a $71.3 million take. It's less than the previous two Shrek sequels made in their opening weekends, but it's far more than the $26.6 million made by this weekend's second place movie, Iron Man 2. Robin Hood made $18.7 to finish third and all the way down in sixth place, with a paltry $4.1 million is MacGruber. At least his grandma still loves him. [HR]

Obama Fanboys Rip Administration’s Oil Spill Response

If President Obama needed any more proof that his administration hasn't handled the BP oil spill with grace, he need look no further than two of his biggest fans, James Carville and Chris Matthews. Normally unwavering Obama fanboys, Carville and Matthews have both recently criticized the administration's response to the spill. On an appearance on Friday's Tonight Show, Matthews said, "[it] scares me. He's been acting a little like a Vatican Observer here. When is he actually going to do something?"

Meanwhile, Carville, who is a Louisiana native and regularly tore President Bush apart for his administration's response to Hurricane Katrina, said Obama has been "lackadaisical. "

"They seem like they're inconvenienced by this, this is some giant thing getting in their way and somehow or another, if you let BP handle it, it'll all go away. It's not going away. It's growing out there. It is a disaster of the first magnitude, and they've got to go to Plan B."

The White House isn't too fond of this line of attack as evidenced by Robert Gibbs's answer to Chip Reid's question about why the government was standing by as a spectator. "Chip, there’s nothing that would denote that the federal government has stood there and hoped for the best. I mean, the premise of your question doesn’t match any single ... action that our government has undertaken since the call came in that this rig had exploded in the Gulf."

AIG’s Joseph Cassano Escapes Criminal Charges

Almost two years after AIG fell into the crapper, federal prosecutors have decided not to bring charges against the former head of its financial-products division, Joseph Cassano. "This result was the product of two things: An innocent client and fair prosecutors and agents. The system worked," a statement from his lawyer said. Another AIG executive, Andrew Forster, was cleared as well, but the firm itself isn't quite out of the woods. The SEC is still looking into the financial-products division and could bring a civil securities-fraud case. [NYT, AP]
