Ashutosh Gowariker's magnum-opus Buddha to have an all international crew

Ashutosh Gowariker Even before his next film Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey releases, Ashutosh Gowariker has already moved on to his big budget project Buddha. Produced by Dr.Bhupendra Kumar Modi and directed by Gowariker, Buddha tells the journey of Gautam Buddha right from when he was known as Prince Siddhartha to his moment of enlightenment when he became Buddha. While the hunt for the actor who will play the lead role is still on, it's quite interesting to note that the film will primarily have an all-international crew except production designer Nitin Chandrakant Desai who has worked with Gowariker on most of his films. Some of the international crew members are:. David S. Ward (USA) - Screen writer (best known for his Oscar winning screenplay in The Sting and Sleepless in Seattle) Michel Shane (USA) - Executive Producer (who is known for having worked on films like I Robot and Catch Me If You Can) Karl Walter Lindenlaub (USA) - Director of Photography (German born Lindenlaub has done been the DOP on films such as Independence Day, The Jackal, The Princess Diaries, Maid in Manhattan, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Ninja Assassin) April Ferry (USA) - Costume Designer (Academy Award, BAFTA and Emmy award winner who has worked on Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Maverick, Free Willy, Frailty, National Security) Glenn Boswell (AUS) - 2nd Unit director / Stunt coordinator (has worked on films like X-Men Wolverine, I, Robot, all three Matrix films, Dark City, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Thin Red Line) Jarrod Linton(AUS) - Previz Supervisor (has worked on films like Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Da Vinci Code, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Troy, The Spirit, X-Men Wolverine) David Russell (AUS) - Story Board artist (a renowned storyboard artist and illustrator having contributed to over 80 films including Hollywood blockbusters such as Star Wars, X-Men Wolverine, Batman, Terminator II, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Tombstone, Romeo & Juliet, Moulin Rouge) Dileep Singh Rathore (IND/USA) - Co-producer / Line Producer (With over 20 years experience in producing and handling domestic and international productions, Dileep's credits include Peter Weir's upcoming release The Way Back, Disney's Hexe Lilli, Warner Bros.' Das Wilde Leben, Blood Diamond, and films such as City of Joy, Flames in Paradise, Maya, Return to Rajapur among others.) Ashutosh Gowariker Speaking on making a film with such a top-notch international crew, producer Dr.Modi says, "Buddha, is a truly global film and we needed a team that would have a global sensibility and transcend language barriers." Ashutosh Gowariker says, "The first important decision that Dr. Modi took was to make Buddha in English. And that got me immediately interested because I have always felt that when it comes to religion, you must cater to an international audience, especially so in the case of Buddha. The past two months of pre-production have been exciting. It has been exhilarating to be working with the DOP Karl Walter Lindenlaub, Oscar nominated Costume Designer and Stunt Co-ordinator Glenn Boswell. The movies that these people have worked on are ones that I have admired and seen over and over again. So, I feel privileged to be working with them on Buddha. This is the first time that I have done pre-visualisation for a film. It has been an amazing learning curve to be working with Jarrod Linton who is the pre-viz supervisor on the film. Dr. Modi and his co-producer Dileep Singh Rathore are leaving no stone unturned to give me technicians of my choice that will help create 500 B.C. accurately on screen." As for the lead actor, Gowariker says, "The search for the actor to play Buddha continues. I am going through the hundreds of auditions that have come in and I must say, we are getting closer to our Buddha."

Shahid stands tall on the cover of Man's World

You knew him as the romantic teenager in Ishq Vishk, then he surprised you by playing a devoted husband in Vivah, while you were still there, he took you by surprise as the introvert who is magically transformed by over talkative girl in Jab We Met, but what took the cake was the lean mean fighting machine act in Kaminey. Shahid Kapoor, who is a standing example of the phrase 'chip of the old block'. It's the genes that did it, but we wouldn't like to take the credit away from him as he accepts his failures and stands humble about his hits in the May issue of Man's World. Shahid poses in an all black suit, with a smile that reflects the pitfalls, success and heartbreaks and the never ending media voyeurism only to come out self assured, confident and undeterred. Get a hold of this copy to read the bare all interview by the Kapoor boy on all things life, movies and love.

"Rahman and Mani have always weaved magic" - Nikhil Dwivedi

Nikhil Dwivedi Music is what feelings sound like for Nikhil Dwivedi. When he talks about Raavan and its music, you can make out his feelings for the film and its soundtracks. He doesn't take sides; he stands by it and firmly. He is a true music lover and a strange one too. Because his all time favourite song is from the film Satte Pe Satta called 'Dilbar Mere'. In a quick brief chat, Nikhil takes us through his best tracks from Mani Ratnam films, including Raavan and more. Favourite soundtrack from Hindi film I have stories behind each one of my favourite soundtracks. But my 'the favourite' soundtrack from a Hindi film has to be 'Dilbar Mere' from Satte Pe Satta. All the seven songs from the album are my favourite. It's the best album I've ever heard. It's strange but that's the fact. The first brush of music remains with you throughout your life. It's mystical. When I was a young boy, Satte Pe Satta released. Over the years, the music of that film has grown for me. Not to forget, it had my favourite actor, Mr Amitabh Bachchan. It had my favourite music composer, Mr R.D. Burman. It had Kishore Kumar singing the songs. It had Asha Bhonsle who is my favourite too. I think Amitabh Bachchan has never looked so handsome to me in his entire life than in Satte Pe Satta. Favourite soundtrack from Raavan It has to be the title track 'Beera'. Yes, what a wonderful way to describe Raavan in that song. It says so much and everything about this man called Raavan. People have liked the Mission Impossible themes, National Anthems, James Bond themes, etc. You get the idea of what Raavan is all about. It has superb lyrics from Gulzaar saab and music woven beautifully by the genius A.R. Rahman. Raavan music - Not that great? When any of A.R. Rahman albums release, everyone says that the album is not that great. Thirty days later, they'll say 'Oh, it's catching on' and sixty days later they'll say 'It's the greatest album ever produced.' I am hardly surprised by the reactions of the music reviews. Why this demand for difference? Mani Ratnam is a maker who isn't trying to create a different album. He isn't a pop artist. He is a filmmaker. He will create songs that'll do justice to the scenes and its story and its characters. Mani's songs take the story forward. How different does a 'Dangerous' sound from a 'Thriller'? It's the same crooning of Michael Jackson. It's the same innuendo's. There will always be a difference in A.R. Rahman tracks, Michael Jackson tracks and R.D. Burman tracks but yet they are not different and that's why we like these composers. Favourite Mani Ratnam film soundtrack My favourite track from any of Mani's film is 'Chaiya Chaiya' from Dil Se. I liked 'Huma Huma' too from Bombay. It was the biggest hit ever from Mani Ratnam films. I like 'Anjaana' from Yuva too. Again, all three songs were commercial hits.

Anurag Basu hosts chat show for Bengali channel

Anurag Basu Anurag Basu, who started his career directing scores of episodes for Ekta Kapoor's long-running soap Kasauti Zindagi Ki, has let his chequered life come a full circle. Anurag has gone back to his roots in more ways than one. Not only has he returned to television to host a celebrity chat-show, he's also doing the show in his home town Kolkata. It's not so much his return to his roots, but also the timing of it that is significant. Anurag has been frequenting his home-town Kolkata at a time when his biggest and most expensive film Kites has released. The truth is that the making of Kites has been stressful for Anurag. Says a source, "Anurag was brought into Rakesh Roshan's production house by Hrithik Roshan with the purpose of infusing new blood into the proceedings. But once Anurag started making the film there were unending differences with Rakesh Roshan. The two belonged to completely different schools of filmmaking. And they were both right. There were differences of opinion, heated arguments and overall creative difference all the time. And though the film has shaped up well, Anurag distanced himself from the project once it was handed over to Brett Ratner for editing." Rather than be around answering uncomfortable questions about his differences with his Kites producers, Anurag Basu chose to escape into his home- town Kolkata where he first played a role in Onir's film and then agreed to host a celebrity chat-show for the channel Zee Bangla which keeps Anurag out of Mumbai most of the time. Anurag's neighbour and close friend Pritam Chakraborty who was in Kolkata on Tuesday to be interviewed on Anurag's show admits the director has been heading home quite often. Pritam says, "Nowadays Anurag looks for any excuse to be in Kolkata and to do things other than direct a film. He was here to play a role in Onir's film. Now he's recording a chat show. I guess you can't keep a Bengali in Bollywood and out of Kolkata." As Anurag Basu waits for his pal Imtiaz Ali to relieve Ranbir Kapoor from Rockstar and start Basu's film, Basu will be frequently returning to Kolkata to research his Kishore Kumar bio-pic and also to look at the possibility of directing a Bengali film. As for Kites, Anurag has let it go to see how high it flies.

Subhash K. Jha speaks on Kites

Kites Somewhere in this well-chiselled curvaceous and crafty caper-romance about two desperados in love and on the run, you realize Kites has completely sucked you into its tale of the wanton and the passionate. And the twain shall bleed. If you are familiar with Anurag Basu's drama of desperate passion (Gangster, Life In A Metro) you'd know that this sensitive filmmaker knows how to slice through the moral fibre of contemporary relationships to arrive at the core truth of human existence. Everyone lives for him or herself. But if a like-minded soul -mate shows up you don't mind losing your isolated individualism to include another entity in your universe of self- absorption. The two handsome human beings in Kites who love each other start off on an entirely materialistic platform. Early in the film when Jai (Hrithik Roshan) runs into Linda (Barbara Mori) in entirely unromantic circumstances, you know these two desperate souls will make a run for love even if it means losing their lives. Basu's finely-written film walks a very delicate line between a romance and a crime-caper. If the first- quarter of this handsomely evocative drama echoes Woody Allen's Matchpoint, the rest of the high-octane adventure saga pays a nudging tribute to Arthur Penn's Bonnie & Clyde. Kites To the film's credit the couple's desperate passion is never represented through scene after scene of torrid love scenes. The kisses are furtive, feeling and fleeting. Hrithik is the kind of actor who can express urgent passion with the narrowing of his eyes and the clenching of his jaws. In this strangely uncharted film about lovers on the run, Hrithik creates quite a tangible graph for his character who starts off as a self serving green-card hungry ogre and then rapidly moves into the embrace of desperate passion for a woman who is engaged to marry into a very dangerous family. The crisscross of commitments and relationships is achieved in an easygoing sweep of drama and crime. The rest is taken care off by heart-in-the-mouth car chase sequences and stunts that seem to be done with an expertise uncommon to Hindi cinema. Plenty has been said and written about the chemistry or the lack of it between the fugitive lovers. However looking at a couple for sexual compatibility in a film that seeks to champion empathy and companionship during times of screeching tyres and sanguinary stress is somewhat silly and unjust. Perhaps if the couple had lived to have children they had promised each other, we'd have seen the sexual frisson .Not this time. Not here. Director Basu has carved the two lovers' individual death sequences in a fusion celebrating an operatic self annihilation. Hrithik's plunge to death reminded me of Kangna Ranaut's steep fall into death in Anurag Basu's Gangster. Death becomes the drama. Ayananka Bose's cinematography is at times too flashy to underline the protagonist's passion as seen in the bustle of hedonism. Akiv Ali's editing, especially of the final 20 minutes, is evocative and energetic, making words unnecessary, as the lovers are fluent in two different languages that are incomprehensible to one another. Kites You wish there was more time for the lovers to get to know each other, and for us to watch them grow within each other's space. Kites does not allow its protagonists or the audience the luxury of familiarity. Hrithik and Barbara are gone out of sight before we fully absorb or even observe their mutual passion. And yet! The stolen moments, between the pair, lingers long after the deathly denouement. That longish sequence where Hrithik and Barbara, engaged to marry for money, show off their luxury goods to each other, underlines the inherent emptiness of a life lived for materialism. The writing is as clever as the looks and lines that the lovers exchange. Barbara and Hrithik take care of the rest. As said earlier Hrithik carves out a charted course for his character. He is in exceptional shape every which way. Barbara looks somewhat more mature than Hrithik in some scenes. But her vivacity and natural ability to grasp the essence of human bonding makes us forget the age factor. Shot in the most eye-catching casinos of Las Vegas and the toasted-brown deserts of Mexico Kites is a minor feast for the senses. Yes it has its over-cute annoying interactive moments. But these pass quickly. And we are left with a feeling of having witnessed an exhilarating excursion into a terrain where the heart meets an intersection and swerves dangerously into a self-destructive zone. Love never seemed more dangerous or worth the risk. Go for it.

Bhandarkar signs Ajay, Emraan, Omi for Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji

Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Omi Vaidya Trust Madhur Bhandarkar to throw a surprise when one could least see it coming. With a run of critically acclaimed films that also saw commercial success coming their way, Bhandarkar was all set to jump into another hard hitting drama Heroine where Kareena Kapoor would be the leading lady. However, he recently announced the making of another film in the interim - Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji. Nothing wrong with that because it was meant to utilise the empty space he had between now and November when Heroine will go on floors. However, what has really surprised is the fact that it is no 'stop-gap' arrangement where a small film with smaller stars is being made. Instead, it is a star studded affair where none other than - hold your breath - Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi and Omi Vaidya (Chatur of 3 Idiots fame) have been signed. While many filmmakers worth their salt would have had to wait for Ajay and Emraan for at least a year before they could have consented to the project (considering their own alternative industry and resultantly a super packed schedule), Bhandarkar has managed to rope them in at such a quick notice. A romantic comedy, Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji [the title being based on the popular Gulzar written song from this year's release Ishqiya] would be a joint production of Bhandarkar Entertainment and Kumar Mangat. Incidentally, Kumar Mangat and Ajay Devgn share a great business and personal rapport for decades and have made number of films together, most recently Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge. Bhandarkar, known for his intense dramas, is letting his hair down for Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji and would be working with an unusual cast of Ajay, Emraan and Omi for the first time in his more-than-a-decade long career. "That's right. It doesn't get more unique than having actors as diverse as Ajay, Emraan and Omi together for a romcom", smiles Bhandarkar for whom it would be a challenge of a different kind to helm a film of this nature, "In any case, I always cast for a film as per who suits the character best. Regarding making a romom then well, I always wanted to make a subject of this kind. I am glad that before delving into Heroine, I would be completing Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji." Looking at the fact that Ajay and Emraan would be seen in a hard hitting action drama set in 70s - Once Upon A Time In Mumbai - soon, it would be quite a contrast to see them doing something entirely different for Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji. Known for his knack of getting good performances by relative newcomers like Neil Nitin Mukesh (Jail) and Kunal Khemu (Traffic Signal) in the past, it won't be a surprise of Ajay, Emraan and Omi do end up coming up with something that would be entirely new for the fan base of them as well as Bhandarkar. While the men in the film have been finalised, the leading ladies are yet to be zeroed in. "We should be able to make an announcement around the girls in next few days. The shooting of Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji begins in July and wraps up by September. It is a film that would be completed in 55-60 days schedule. After that, I move into Heroine for which the writing process is on", concludes Bhandarkar.
