Shahrukh Khan Cricket and Bollywood are soon going to be shaking hands again, this time for another cause but only with a sense of festivity. The venue being Sri Lanka, the twenty 20 charity match between Bollywood and the Sri Lankan cricketers will be played at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on June 4. Organised by IIFA, this one would surely get the crowds soaring in. To add to the delight, IIFA's Bollywood stars' cricket team is said to be captained by none other than Shah Rukh Khan himself, while Kumar Sangakkara will captain the Sri Lankan cricket team. The festivity would be added by the local and Indian singers who would be performing there and the fans would have an opportunity the rub shoulders with their favourite stars. Add to that, the fact that the match isn't extremely serious, the general rules remain except that the Bollywood team gets to have eleven players in a rotating manner so that every player gets a chance to perform. Sri Lanka Cricket along with the Sri Lanka Tourism are pleased to organise this match as the proceeds of this event go to Habitat and UNICEF.

"You will forget the 'superstar' Hrithik in Kites" - Anurag Basu

Anurag Basu Amidst the pressure of working in his costliest film till date, rumours of three directors on board (including Rakesh Roshan and Hrithik Roshan), speculations around Kangna's role in the film, grapevine surrounding the eventual release of the film and a time period of as long as three years, filmmaker Anurag Basu is finally getting ready to unveil his Kites on the big screen. Despite the moment of glory that he finds himself in, Basu is unusually calm, composed and doesn't sound a wee bit hassled. Yes, there is a sense of relief though, as is evident in his conversation with Joginder Tuteja even as the film is barely hours away from release. In each of your earlier films, most notably Life In A Metro, Gangster and Murder, you were the hero of the show. This time around you had at least two other people around - Hrithik Roshan and Rakesh Roshan. Did that result in you getting out of your comfort zone? (Laughs) Hua yeh that that this time around, the story was given to me and I had to develop it further. I couldn't sit down and start writing immediately because I had to get out of my comfort zone. In my earlier films I had things ready before I started the shoot for a film. Here I had to do the entire writing and ensure that all people involved were on the same page. So I had to apply myself further and put down twists and turns on the paper. If someone else does it for me then it becomes a little difficult. So once this writing was done, I was back into the comfort zone. Shooting Kites after that was the easiest part. 10 minutes into the film and you will forget that you are watching Hrithik and Barbara You just mentioned about the twists and turns. Do you want to elaborate on the ones that we would see in Kites? See, I like lot of layers in my characters; they need to have grey shades. Same is the case in Kites as well. Even though the story is based in Vegas, the characters are very real. 10 minutes into the film and you will forget that you are watching Hrithik and Barbara that you know. Here, the characters that they play have their own weaknesses. They are not black and white; they are grey. They do their best to overcome their weaknesses. Anurag Basu How about you though? Did you ever feel weak calling the shots because for the first time ever, there were people involved who could ask you some questions as well?(Smiles) I have not shot a single scene without being convinced myself. Achcha bura jo bhi scene hai, woh mera hai. Every part of the product is mine. When you will see the film, you will realise for yourself. Ek director ka chaap toh aa hi jaata hai. My attempt was to make a film which was better and different from my earlier films. This is my best film till date. All films should be better than earlier attempts. While I am writing my next film now, I know that it has to be better than Kites. This is my best film till date Talking about better films, you are definitely making bigger films for sure. From movies ranging in the budget of Rs. 5 crores, you have suddenly topped Rs. 50 crores here. But I am the same person. The only difference is that in earlier films, I always had budget in my mind while scripting. I had to tweak my screenplay accordingly. This time I didn't have to think like that. I kept writing without thinking much on how expensive would it be to shoot a scene. I also didn't have to worry about the time that it may take for the actual shoot of the film. Your producer Rakesh Roshan really gave you so much free hand here? That's right. This is where Rakeshji's support and advice came in handy. In fact he used to tell me that the film would take time but I didn't believe him. I used to ask ki 'arrey, itna waqt kaise lagega'. He used to explain. Today when I look back, I agree with every word of his. So would you do a film with him again? If Rakeshji asks me, then why not? I can confidently say that Hrithik has rediscovered himself with Kites I am sure you must be definitely ecstatic about working with Hrithik. After all it was stated that in the struggle of differences, Hrithik sided with you because both of you were on the same page as far as making a film for today's age was concerned. Aisa koyi thought dimaag mein aaya hi nahi tha (laughs). We enjoyed the process of making this film; that's about it. Kaun kiski side le raha hai nahi socha tha. I and Hrithik actually had an amazing tuning. Even as I thought something, he used to read it quickly. This is film made by all of us. Yeh sab baad ki baatein hai ki what will audience feel - whether it is an actor's or a director's. Anurag Basu So now we have one more filmmaker who has given Hrithik something new to munch on. Kites seems totally different from what he has done in the past. Well, I can confidently say that he has rediscovered himself with this film. Hrithik is just amazing. Moreover, this film was challenging for me as well. As for doing something different, Hrithik does that in each of his films. Kites is not an exception. He says 'yes' to a film only if it offers something different for him and expects something new from him. Look at Jodhaa Akbar, Krrish or any other film of his in the recent past. In Kites, his character is simple but to achieve that sensibility is very different. Dekhne mein sab bahaut aasaan lagta hai but it is so difficult to achieve. Even though he is superstar, you will forget that he is Hrithik once he comes on screen. You would identify and love his character. Final question Anurag before the world gets to see what Kites is all about: Who gets the bouquets or the brickbats if the film succeeds or fails - Anurag Basu, Rakesh Roshan or Hrithik Roshan? Soch soch kar questions laya hai, haan (winks)? Arrey, achcha ho ya bura ho, saari jimmedaari meri hai. You don't call a director captain of the ship just like that. This is my film and the decisions while making the film were mine. Whatever is the fate of the film, I would own them.

Anupam Kher to feature in Pankaj Kapoor's Mausam

Anupam Kher Anupam Kher will be seen yet again with Shahid Kapoor in Mausam. Kher has been asked to join the unit in Edinburgh. The busy actor says, "I'm yet to get a clear indication of my role. But the fact that Pankaj is directing is enough incentive for me. I'm very fond of him as an actor and as a human being. And I also like his son Shahid a lot. In fact in his brief career, I've played Shahid's father thrice (in Sooraj Barjatya's Vivah, Dil Bole Hadippa and Badmaash Company)." This time, though, Anupam isn't playing Shahid's father. It is apparently the role that Pankaj Kapoor had earmarked for himself. Now with direction proving a full-time occupation, Pankaj would much rather concentrate on direction and let the others do the acting. However, the dates for Mausam are still being worked out. Anupam now flies out to the Lake District in England for a walk-on talkathon on the BBC's prestigious business talk show Peschartdt's People. The internationally-known host Michael Peschardt is known to grill the world's most authoritative entertainers and academicians including, from India, N. Narayana Murthy, Vijay Mallya and Amitabh Bachchan. Says Anupam, "I like representing our country on international platforms. Especially on a non-film based platform. I think I've moved ahead of being just an actor." Considering the response to it, does Anupam feel a sense of relief for opting out of Gurinder Chadha's It's A Wonderful Afterlife when his wife was offered what he thought was an insubstantial role? Retorts Anupam, "Not at all. Gurinder gave me my first major international break in Bend It Like Beckham. How can I forget that? Our relationship goes far beyond one film. I'm sure we'll be working together again shortly."

"Kites might prove to be successful in accessing peoples mind and heart" - Hrithik Roshan [Part 1]

Hrithik Roshan Hrithik Roshan is a guys' guy and, obviously, a ladies' man. It's not just the looks and the voice, the irony, the charm, the political and social awareness and the unphoney compassion - an Indian who isn't an embarrassment to India; it's the whole package. He must be too good, surely, to be true? The Hrithik effect is even more astounding. You can attract your own little fan club just by announcing that you are off to interview him. Within minutes you start receiving comments from friends on Facebook. Girls label him as a 'Greek God', Boys call him 'The Italian Stallion' and I call him 'The sexiest man alive'. He is like a rare Siberian tiger. He is being firmly guarded by his film and personal PR execs when I arrive for the interview in his vanity van. India's busiest star has just had three changes in a photoshoot and I am waiting for him to unwind before he calls me in his private room inside his van. But as soon as I clap eyes on him, and take in that kittenish smile, the tousled, leonine eyebrows and - of course - the lush whip of unwashed curled up hair, all that instantly vanishes. Roshan is calm, polite and pleasant: heaven on a stick. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent meets the man who is flying high, who is on cloud nine but yet rooted to the ground when it comes to his acting prowess - Hrithik Roshan. In this interview Hrithik talks about Kites, the belleza Barbara Mori, father-producer-director Rakesh Roshan, the temptress Kangna Ranaut and the new man inside Film Kraft - Anurag Basu. Hrithik Roshan is a rare example of what I consider a successful interview for any journalist. Yes, I agree I am a rare find because I am not easily accessible. I regard that as my short coming. Other actors are able to do what I do, plus do the other social and media responsibilities. I can't. I can't do two things at the same time when I am trying to give a hundred percent to one thing. It becomes a distraction. The kind of roles I am doing are too different and it makes me immerse into the world completely. I don't see the point of being in the news and on the face of all covers just for the heck of it. It makes sense when I have something to talk about. So you're like the joker of The Dark Knight. You get sucked into your characters huh? (laughs) Not really. I am not that crazy. It's not about my character sucking me in. It's also about my personality. I've always been shy. I don't interact too much. Hrithik Roshan You've been flying high in the sky more than the Kites do. But how does it feel to be up there on cloud nine? Never knew I completed a decade in acting. I am very happy standing on the ground than flying high. Feeling good about wherever you are is more important than thinking that you will feel better if you're up there. I've been through failures and successes, and have understood that there is no bad experience in life. Every experience is good. My mission in life is not money, fame or to be the best. It is to evolve as much as one can on a personal level as a human being. Will Kites be used as a teaching tool when it comes to romance in films? Is it going to re-invent romance? I don't think anything that is creative can be taught. But I think Kites might prove to be successful in accessing peoples mind and heart. An honest space is the source of all creativity. Kites is honest when it comes to every single frame we've shot, every single aspect of its making, every single twich, etc. You debut as a singer in Kites too. Yes, I have tried. When my director Mr. Anurag Basu told me to sing in the film, we all sat and thought that we were stuck. I mean, we thought that if my character sings, it had to be my voice. You can't fake that. So, I went through two weeks of training and that's all they gave me (laughs). Is the writer a better of his film or the director or both? Wow! I always feel that it is the brain that gives birth to the germ. If it's the writer's conception and if it's coming from that heart, he can convince me or anybody. It usually seems to be that the person who writes is the best person to express it. Fortunately for us, Anurag Basu is the writer and the director of Kites. So far in my life, whoever I've worked with, it seems that makes the best combination. Hrithik Roshan How tight is the screenplay of Kites? I don't believe in such words. They are manipulative. If a scene requires a certain pace, then that's the pace. If the scene requires a certain sensibility, so be it. The audiences liking it or not isn't the question. The story you're expressing has to be expressed in complete sanctity. I don't think there is any right kind of filmmaking. You have to be convinced, inspired and enjoy what you're trying to do. How objective and critical do you get when it comes down to playing your characters? Up until Kites, everything I did was very well graphed out and calculated. Kites was all about unlearning that. Kites needed a space where you just felt like you were seeing that moment happening for the first time. To achieve that, I had to let go of all my past conditioning as an actor. My approach to my art completely took an extremist kind of a shift and that got pushed even more because of my co-actor in the film Barbara Mori. I was very influenced by her. We Indians are very happy in a small pond of acting but the people from the West with whom I've worked in the film live in a vast ocean. I let go and dived into the ocean. I never saw the reproduction of my takes in the video assist. I never wanted that safety net. I instructed everyone around me that if anyone saw me sneaking a peek, they had to stop me. That was me being critical. I never saw the reproduction of my takes in the video assist. I never wanted that safety net. Did you ever land up in a debate over Kites with your father and uncle (producer and music director of Kites)? At every juncture. Every single decision was either agreed instantly or discussed and argued out. It was about the process of convincing each other about the better thought. There was the fourth head too, my director Anurag Basu. I cherish all arguments we had. We work without egos. It's not 'my thought' or 'your thought'. The moment one person was able to convince the others; it was readily accepted and celebrated without one feeling lesser of himself that his thought was not the successful one. Watch this space to read Part 2 of Hrithik Roshan's interview

Kites team bites nails as ash clouds hover over London Premiere

For a while it seemed a lost opportunity for the hyper-anxious team of the Kites cast and production members who were in New York for the premiere on Sunday. The team comprising of Hrithik Roshan, Barbara Mori, Sussanne Roshan, Rakesh Roshan, wife Pinky Roshan, Anurag Basu and his wife, Rajesh Roshan and his wife plus senior members of the Reliance Big Pictures team were supposed to fly out of New York after the premiere on Monday evening for the London premiere at Leicester Square on Tuesday. That's when the ash clouds struck again and almost all the flights to Europe had to be cancelled or diverted. On Monday morning the Kites team waited anxiously for the verdict. Not being able to reach London in team for the premiere would have meant huge losses. However the team arrived in London from New York late Monday evening. Sanjeev Lamba, the CEO of Reliance Big Picture, says "Flights carrying all of us landed on Monday evening. We were in American and British airlines. Both landed safely and on time."

Mani Ratnam to be honoured at the 67th Venice International Film Festival

Mani Ratnam Veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam is all set to be bestowed with the Jaeger-LeCoultre 'Glory to the Filmmaker' award at the 67th Venice International Film Festival. In recent years, the award has gone to other major world filmmakers such as Takeshi Kitano, Abbas Kiarostami, Agnes Varda, and Sylvester Stallone. This year however, Swiss watch manufacturer Jaeger-LeCoultre celebrates its six years of partnership with the Venice International Film Festival by announcing Jaeger-LeCoultre 'Glory to the Filmmaker' award. Speaking on why they chose Mani Ratnam for this honour, Marco Mueller, Venice Film Festival director says, "Mani Ratnam used to initially make movies only in his native tongue, Tamil, but has now been one of a handful of filmmakers to successfully handle the transition to the All-India market. One of the great innovators in contemporary Indian cinema, he helped introduce the auteur concept to contemporary Bollywood. His movies display precision and poise, and have always been removed from the bombast and bluster of mass-produced regional cinema. The lavish musical numbers in his films, some of the best-tailored in Mumbai and Madras in recent years, have influenced the style of many others (as well as the design of commercials and music videos). Ratnam's most celebrated films have become part of the cinematic imagination of the sub-continent." On the occasion of the award ceremony, the Mostra will present the festival premiere of Mani Ratnam's much-anticipated forthcoming film Raavan, attended by the director and by its cast and crew including Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, and music maestro A.R. Rahman. Raavan is produced by Madras Talkies in association with Reliance Big Pictures and distributed internationally by Reliance Big Pictures and IM Global. "Raavan will enchant audiences with its stirring drama and entrancing musical sequences," says Marco Mueller. "We are proud to be hosting the festival premiere of this wonderful film, which will be presented at the 2010 Mostra in both the Hindi and the Tamil versions." As in previous editions, together with the award the director will be presented with a Reverso Jaeger-LeCoultre watch, a one-of-a-kind model with a commemorative engraving.

Traffic stops at Times Square for Hrithik Roshan during Kites Premiere

Hrithik Roshan proved a real and literal traffic-stopper in New York on Sunday night when all traffic was halted for him to sprint across 42nd Street to meet his fans. Amidst heavy security bandobast at Times Square, the New York premiere of Kites concluded on Sunday evening to a roaring ovation. There were some heart- stopping moments of security hazard caused mainly by Hrithik Roshan's fan-concern when breaking all protection protocol the star made a dash across the bustling 42nd Street from the venue of the premiere to eager fans across the road. Hrithik Roshan's considerate gesture towards fans at the Times Square venue of the Kites premiere on Sunday evening, created panic for the tense and anxious Kites team. The story goes…at around 5 in the evening when Hrithik along with his co-star Barbara Mori and wife Sussanne, Dad and Mom - Rakesh and Pinky Roshan, director Anurag Basu (with wife) and other members of the team reached the 42nd street at Times Square, he was told to wave out to hordes of Indian fans who had been standing on the other side of the super-board street since early morning waiting for a glimpse of the star. Sanjeev Lamba of Reliance Big Pictures confirms the incident, "Hrithik did indeed dash across the 42nd Street from our red carpet to waiting fans across the road. And we aren't about crossing just any busy street at peak hour. 42nd Street is a gigantic universe. Hrithik ran across a good half a mile to get to his fans." The elaborate security was obviously in a panic. Says Lamba, "We had to halt all traffic on 42nd Street for Hrithik to cross. So we can finally say Hrithik Roshan is the first traffic-stopper from Bollywood to make the crossover." Not just a dash across the busiest street to meet his fans, Hrithik and his dad also made impromptu arrangements for about 500 fans to be accommodated in an extra screen at the AMC Empire theatre. Hours after the exhausting and exhilarating experience, Rakesh Roshan said, "What could we do? There were 400-500 of Hrithik's fans who wanted to see the film. There were women crying, girls tearing their hair and threatening to commit suicide." In addition to the 700-seater at the AMC Empire theatre, smaller 500-seater screener was rented for extra fans at the last minute. "We had no choice. The fans wouldn't have allowed us to have the New York premiere, if we refused. We're glad Hrithik's fans returned happy. At the after-party at the Grand Park Ville, everyone was talking about the new grammar of filmmaking in Kites."

Arjun Rampal to open LAP in Mumbai; blames Indian cricketers for T- 20 failure

Arjun Rampal Arjun is the happiest person on the planet as of now. The reasons - Housefull doing well, his next film is a sci-fi film Ra.One, and him opening his club LAP in Mumbai. On the flip side, he is sad too. The reason - 'IPL after party' controversy. But first, the happy moment. Arjun Rampal is quite excited about opening his lounge bar LAP in Mumbai. On questioning him about his ongoing plans, he said, "I'd love to open LAP here in Mumbai. LAP is doing great in Delhi and it's time it sees its inception in this city. I am looking for the right area and space and have almost confirmed one as of now. Hopefully, if I confirm the location in the next few months, you might just see LAP opening by the end of this year in Mumbai or next year. I am excited and can't wait for the launch of LAP now." With location hunting for LAP, then off to the sets for his next film Ra.One with SRK, then off to home spending time with kids and wife, then off to the gym, then some tweets, then some business meetings and so on , Rampal is the busiest man in town. But what took us by surprise is the fact that he sounded a bit dejected too when we quizzed him on his wife's name and his being dragged into the cricketing controversies. Here's what followed. England wins the ICC T-20 World Cup last night beating the Aussies. That's past. But the match still continues here in India as the Indian cricketers are under the scanner of the BCCI. Whether it's their failure at the recent T-20 world cup or the ongoing debate and controversies about the IPL, the Indian cricketers aren't the only ones facing the heat this summer. Take IPL for instance, the organising of IPL Parties saw the who's who of the cricketing world jamming with the Bollywood celebs and got the fans to interact one on one with the cricketers and their favourite celebrities. The media, the BCCI and few of the ex-Indian cricketers are also playing the blame game with the organisers, Arjun Rampal and wife Mehr Jessia Rampal for organising IPL parties. But guess what? Rampal is clearly blaming the cricketers for being irresponsible. In the recent chat we had with him a few days ago, Rampal quotes, "I own a night club. So definitely, I'll be the one who'll be promoting a lot of parties in and out of the town. But the fact of the matter is that all the players used to get three days off before their next game. IPL is more of a carnival. Fans got closer to the players and everybody enjoyed themselves. That was the motto of such parties. I don't think it's correct to say that 'It's the parties and therefore the Indian team hasn't done well at the recent failure at the ICC World Cup T-20'. I think it's the selection of the team which was not correct. Secondly, the other players like Chris Gayle, Michael Hussey, etc who came from International teams have come to IPL parties and went on to play good innings later in the World Cup T-20. I don't think that my wife and I are to be blamed for organising parties. That's silly and just an excuse to get away. Get the game right first. We were not forcing anyone to come to the parties. If my movies don't do well, I don't blame anybody else but myself."

Katrina Kaif dodges security again, goes to airport in cab alone

Katrina Kaif is increasingly becoming a security hazard to herself. In spite of the constant flow of stalkers and mobs she continues to step out fearlessly, some would say recklessly without care about repercussions. While Salman Khan has always believed in following security measures, all efforts to convince Katrina to do the same fell on deaf ears. In fact, Katrina has always disregarded security threats. Sometime ago when hordes of young and old people had descended on her at a public gathering she had fobbed off the security arrangements made by the organizers arguing, "They love me. They can never harm me." But her latest daredevilish disregard for all rules of self-preservation takes the cake. On Monday morning, when Katrina was required to fly to Bangalore for an event with Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina just hopped into a taxi with her hand-luggage and took off. Much to the shock and disbelief of the cabbie who had no clue about the VIP passenger he was carrying until he looked into his rear- view mirror. While Katrina cracks up at the recollection of the moment when the cabbie spotted her in the rear, her Raajneeti crew were far from amused when they saw Katrina hop out of a cab unaccompanied (even her personal manager and constant companion came straight to the airport). Ranbir and Prakash Jha were seen soundly ticking her off for her disregard for security rules. Katrina has been indulging in such reckless security-adventures much too often these days. According to a close friend, she takes off on her own usually accompanied by her trusted driver and no other companion just for a spin far away to drive off loneliness. But her latest adventure-ride to the airport on her own has left Katrina's family far from amused. It has now been decided that Katrina's youngest sister Isabel who has been studying cinema in the US may cut short her acting course to join Katrina in Mumbai. Katrina admits her family is worried about her safety. "But what's the big deal about hopping into a cab to rush to the airport? Thousands of girls do it all the time. What's there to get hyper? My driver was late because he got caught in a traffic snarl. If I waited anymore I would've missed my flight. So I waved for a cab, hopped in and zipped off." What concerns people close to Katrina is her utter obliviousness to obvious security dangers. Says a close friend, "Katrina doesn't realize the effect that her solitary presence in crowded places can have on people. Hopping into a cab early morning in Mumbai when there are no cops around is just not done. But she refuses to believe anyone would harm her." Katrina's family doesn't appreciate her all-izz-well-with-the-world philosophy. They've taken serious note of her carelessness towards basic protection rules. And her days of zipping off on her own in strangers' company are nearing an end, thanks to the timely intervention of her family.
