Industry Roundup: Swank Signs On To Dying Heart, Hoffman Joins Pair of Films

Swanky: Hilary Swank has signed on to star in Dreams of a Dying Heart, a "post-Iraq War film," directed by Shawn Lawrence Otto, in which a soldier (Swank) struggles to readjust to civilian life after she survives a combat chopper crash during her time in the army. Ultimately, she becomes plagued by ghostly visions and nightmares. "When I first read the screenplay for Dreams of a Dying Heart I was on an airplane and I couldn't put it down," Swank said. "By the end, I was weeping. The same thing happened to me with Million Dollar Baby." Translation: "After that whole Amelia mess, this better get me Oscar #3." [Variety]

Dustin's Duo: Dustin Hoffman has signed on to star in Nightwork, an adaptation of Irwin Shaw’s novel, a caper about a man who finds a fortune hidden in a hotel corpse and then must flee, evading the treasure’s actual owners. Additionally, Hoffman will star alongside Anthony Hopkins in The Song of Names, based on the award-winning novel by Norman Lebrecht. This one tells the story of two Jewish boys, a Polish refugee and a violin prodigy; the prodigy vanishes on the eve of his international debut - 40 years later, the refugee attempts to unravel the mystery of what happened to his brother. Seems a safe bet he's gonna find him, since otherwise, uh, who is the other actor gonna play? [Deadline, HR]

20,000 x 2: Disney is in negotiations with David Fincher to direct and Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum) to write 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, an updated take on the Jules Verne story “about a group of men who encounter a vengeful scientific genius and his warlike submarine.” Meanwhile, Fox is moving forward with its own version of the tale, produced by Ridley and Tony Scott and with a script from Clash of the Titans co-scribe Travis Beacham. Competing projects on the same subject: so trendy right now. [Heat Vision/HR]

Time To Kill: Zoe Saldana is in early negotiations to star in Columbiana, about a young woman who witnesses her parents’ murder as a child and then grows up to become a "stone-cold assassin." She’s a hitman during the day, and she spends her nights searching for the mobster responsible for her parents’ death. Sounds like a cross between Dexter Morgan and Lost's Sawyer, with a sprinkling of Lara Croft. [Heat Vision/HR]

Passengers Seat: Morgan Creek has licensed Passengers, directed by Gabriele Muccino and starring Keanu Reeves. Set in the future, the film follows a mechanic (Reeves) on a 120-year journey to a faraway colonized planet, who wakes up 100 years too soon and is subsequently stranded in the “world of an interstellar spaceship” with only robots and androids to keep him company. A year later, he decides to wake his fellow passenger - a “beautiful journalist” named Aurora; of course, they fall in love, though they must deal with “the revelation of [his] misjudged act of waking her” as well as a malfunction of their ship, which - at least to us - seem to be issues of slightly different magnitudes. [HR]

Tall Dark Stranger: Adrien Brody has joined Woody Allen’s romantic comedy Midnight in Paris, which will begin shooting this summer in Paris. The large cast already includes Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, Michael Sheen and Carla Bruni. As if this group isn't glistening enough on its own, Brody’s role is described as “flashy.” [HR]

On A Loop: Bruce Willis is joining the cast of Looper, a sci-fi time travel tale starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and directed by Rian Johnson. Willis will be playing the older version of Gordon-Levitt’s character in the film, which is sort of surprising, right? We envision grown up JG-L as more of a Hugh Jackman type. [Deadline]

The Couple That Slashes Together...: Real-life couple Marilyn Manson and Evan Rachel Wood will star in David Gordon Green’s “retro slasher film” Splatter Sisters, described as a “sexploitation-serial-killer-slasher-road-movie circa 1989.” Green said of the project: "This is a role Marilyn Manson was born to play, and with Evan Rachel Wood bringing dramatic gravity to the ensemble, I have no doubt this will take the horror genre to a new level." Let's hope they don't break up again during filming or this could get ugly. [Variety]

Among The Elite: Robert De Niro will star opposite Jason Statham and Clive Owen in The Killer Elite, directed by Gary McKendry. De Niro will play the mentor of Stratham’s character, who has to come out of retirement when De Niro’s character is kidnapped by the enemy. Unclear who Clive Owen is playing, but we're just going to guess he spends much of the movie in a trench coat. [Variety]

Reuters - More than slice-of-life, Romanian director Radu Muntean's "Tuesday, After Christmas" is dice-of-life -- but the dissected minutiae of this adultery drama unfortunately doesn't add up to a very original or moving whole. Arab-American Woman Wins Miss USA Pageant For (Likely) The First Time

Rima Fakih, a 24-year-old Lebanese immigrant from Michigan, was crowned Miss USA 2010 tonight. Fakih, who said she “celebrates both Muslim and Christian faiths,” is "believed to be" the first Arab-American and Muslim to become Miss USA, according to the Detroit Free Press. (Pageant officials told the AP that their records aren’t detailed enough to verify whether she is definitively the first Arab-American, Muslim or immigrant to win the title.) Perhaps as notable is that Fakih managed to win despite nearly tripping on the train of her evening gown during the competition. [The Lede/NYT]

Something Finally Works in BP's Cleanup Effort

BP had some rare good news today in its oil spill cleanup effort, as it was successful in connecting a mile-long funnel which will collect leaking crude oil and transport it to a ship at the surface. The progress was described as an “important step,” though the Obama administration emphasized it isn’t a solution (in fact, the funnel only captures "part" of the spillage), and is continuing to put pressure on the company to work harder, especially in light of news that the leaking oil may have already entered a major current moving toward the Florida Keys. True Blood Season 3 Trailer Promises Sexy Werewolves, Sookie-Eric Heat

After HBO teased us with a 30-second clip on Friday, a longer, two-minute preview of the upcoming third season of True Blood has been released - and it’s all kinds of great. Though we would have liked to see more of Pam and Lafayette, our favorite characters appear to be back doing what they do best: Sookie’s determined to fight for the people she loves (and playing bait at bars not meant for her), Tara’s getting manipulated by someone nefarious, Jason’s having trouble thinking thoughts (“Santa?”) and Eric is, well, smoldering. And the arrival of brooding werewolves and the hint of Sookie-Eric bedroom scenes (!) just further indicate we're in for the satisfying hit of V we've been craving.

Kagan Gets Surprise Stamp of Approval from Laura Bush

Though some (Newt Gingrich, for example) spoke out strongly against Elena Kagan on the morning show circuit this morning, the Supreme Court nominee got an unexpected endorsement from... former First Lady Laura Bush.

“I think it’s great. I’m really glad that there will be three [women on the Supreme Court] if she is confirmed,” Bush said on Fox News Sunday. “I like to have women on the Supreme Court… I just like women to be represented in all parts of American political and civic life.”

Not sure where this Laura Bush - giving both gay marriage and Elena Kagan the stamp of approval (in the same week, no less!) - came from, but we're certainly not complaining.

Mark Zuckerberg Portrayed As Conniving, Hampered By 'Sexual Insecurity' in Network

It hasn’t been the best few weeks for Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. His site has come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks for its new privacy policy, and now the Times of London has revealed that Zuckerberg, 26, may be in for even more damage control come October when the Aaron Sorkin-scripted The Social Network - which details the creation of Facebook - hits theaters.

Apparently the film, directed by David Fincher, portrays Zuckerberg (played by Jesse Eisenberg) as something of a “borderline-autistic conniver.” The script has Zuckerberg cutting out Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss - who provided the initial funding for the site - after Facebook takes off (the twins were eventually awarded $65 million in court). The movie also shows Zuckerberg “indulging his fantasies” with a string of groupies after he quits Harvard and moves to Silicon Valley, where he built Facebook with Napster-co founder Sean Parker (played by Justin Timberlake).

"Sorkin’s screenplay suggests Parker knew Zuckerberg was driven not just by money or fame but also sexual insecurity. While he is depicted as receiving sex in bars, Parker runs the business."

Sadly for Zuckerberg, unlike a really unflattering picture, a Hollywood movie isn't something that can be detagged.

Eliot Spitzer has attempted to put to rest rumors (which he's fueled himself, of course) that he’s planning to run for political office in the near future, as the former governor told PIX News’ Marvin Scott that, despite encouragement, he's not planning to launch a campaign.

"I don't have any thoughts about running for political office right now,” he said. “It is not what I am doing. People have been encouraging me to run for office. I am flattered, and I'm thankful. It feels nice, but it's not happening… I'm not running for comptroller."

And when pressed about his raised profile recently, Spitzer said that things aren’t always what they seem. When Scott started, “When it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck..." Spitzer interrupted with, "But every duck doesn't run for office, you know."

NBC Exec Explains Decision To Hold Parks and Recreation

One of the more surprising revelations in NBC’s (leaked) fall schedule, which will be formally presented at tomorrow's upfronts presentation, was the absence of comedy Parks and Recreation, widely heralded as one of this season’s creative success stories, from the Thursday night comedy lineup, as the show will be held until January. Though star Amy Poehler is currently pregnant, it turns out that is not the reason that the show is being shelved until midseason. NBC West Coast Chairman Jeff Gaspin told reporters that the decision was made to give new comedy Outsourced (which will air at 9:30 p.m.) a prime timeslot.

“It was our toughest decision to make,” he said. “But to get new comedies on our schedule, Thursday is still the best place to launch. We expect Parks and Recreation to be back on the schedule Thursday and it’s not any way an indication that we don’t think it’s as good as any other comedy. We’ve learned from cable that you can wait as long as a year, create more anticipation and not lose any momentum.”

We feel the same way about having to wait six months for new Parks that Ron feels about meetings, or Leslie about libraries.

London's Heathrow Airport Closed Monday Due To Volanic Ash

Like Georgina Sparks, or a persistent rash, the volcanic ash just keeps coming back to wreck havoc. London’s Heathrow Airport (as well as the city's other airports) will be closed Monday, according to Britain’s National Air Traffic Service, as the “dense cloud” of ash moves across England from Iceland. And travelers may be in for years of this fun: the last time Eyjafjallajokul erupted, in 1821, emissions lasted for two years. [NYT]

Cannes Snapshot: The Secret Film Industry Moral of Robin Hood

The champagne is still flowing in the beachfront lounges at Cannes, but this year’s festival is also shot through with a real sense of anxiety, thanks to the end of hedge-fund easy money, the rise of 3-D, the looming threat of piracy, and the rapid shift toward digital distribution. Mix said champagne with nervous producers whose jobs are on the line, and you hear some frank assessments about the state of the business that are typically watered down in the festival’s official "whither film?" panels.

At a bar near the Croisette, we bumped into one hard-drinking, red-faced British producer who had his own unique read of Robin Hood. Griping about filmmakers who demand to shoot on 35mm instead of embracing digital cameras — and theater owners who insist on using expensive physical prints of films, instead of embracing digital distribution — the producer (who asked not to be named) compared the traditionalists to Robin Hood’s arrow makers, about to be made obsolete by “guys selling muskets.”

“Well, half of the people out here are all just crying, saying: Please, don't use the muskets—arrows have worked for such a long time!” he ranted. “What about all the men who pluck the feathers? Think of all the jobs lost: those poor women who make the bows? The men who make the quivers?”

This producer's verdict? Change is inevitable: “In the end,” he said, downing another vodka, “everybody's gonna get blown away by the fuckers with the muskets."

Rock Singer Ronnie James Dio Passes Away

Heavy metal legend Ronnie James Dio, who fronted Black Sabbath after Ozzy Osbourne left the band in 1979, passed away Sunday morning after a battle with stomach cancer. Dio, who at different stages in his career also sang with bands Rainbow, Dio and Heaven and Hell, is credited with inventing the “devil horns” hand gesture. The Times described Dio, who was 67, as “one of the best-loved figures in classic heavy metal.” [ArtsBeat/NYT]

President Obama and the White House Press Corps Walk Into a Hoverboard Factory ...

At first this video of President Obama walking through some kind of workshop in Buffalo looks like it's going to be the latest edition of him feigning interest in mundane things. But then we find out that this is not a mundane thing at all. It's a hovercraft! And if that's not awesome enough, Obama awkwardly strong-arms Times political reporter Sheryl Gay Stolberg into riding the thing. And dammit, it works (barely). Maybe Back to the Future 2 wasn't so far off after all.

Vulture Learns the Location of Conan’s New Studio

If you're a Conan O'Brien fan planning a trip out to sunny Burbank, California, next fall, a Warner Bros. studio tour is now essential. That's because Vulture has learned the historic Warner's lot is expected to be the home of O'Brien's new TBS late-night show.

The decision is pretty logical: TBS is owned by Time Warner, which in turn owns Warner Bros. And the lot is already home to the network's George Lopez late-night show (soon to be O'Brien's after-hours partner) and Ellen DeGeneres's syndicated daytime series.

O'Brien actually owns his new show, so he could've set it up anywhere. And indeed, there had been talk that perhaps Coco might end up back in his recently vacated NBC studio on the Universal lot. After all, NBC spent tens of millions to build the new home, which has been vacant since January (the Conan Wi-Fi signal still works, however. Don't ask how we know that, but we do).

But while it might've made business sense for both NBC and Conan to do a deal, in the end, choosing Warner's seemed to be the best solution (and probably made the most financial sense).

O'Brien will officially begin promoting his new TBS show Wednesday, when he (briefly) interrupts his national tour to appear at the Turner upfront presentation and lunch in New York.

Flying Dog Survives Five-Story Fall

Remember a couple of weeks ago when thunderstorms were whipping all around the city? Alfie, a 4-year-old terrier in Tribeca, does. On May 3 the little guy was out on his owner's eleventh-floor terrace, probably enjoy a nice milk bone, when a gust of wind lifted him in the air. He flew down five stories and 30 feet to the east before landing on a rooftop. Fighter that he is, Alfie jumped right up and walked away with only a few scratches. If the best part of this story is the flying dog (it obviously is), the second-best part is the doorman who helped Alfie find his owner.

"I brought him down to the lobby," she said. "Then [the doorman] grabbed a towel and said, 'This is Alfie. Oh, my, God. This is Alfie. He came from the 11th floor.'"

B-Movies For Sale at Cannes!

That's right ladies, it's Guido Superstar!

Cannes is not all tuxedoed paparazzi on mopeds, or gray-haired auteurs like Mike Leigh, Woody Allen, and Manoel de Oliveira. There’s also a massive B-movie market taking place just behind all those fancy red-carpet screening rooms. Below, a few of the fun titles that caught our eye.

The GOP Will Not Filibuster Elena Kagan

Republican Senator Jon Kyl, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, told CBS's Face the Nation this morning that the GOP will not filibuster Elena Kagan's nomination to the Supreme Court. "The filibuster should be relegated to the extreme circumstances, and I don't think Elena Kagan will represent that," he said. Newt Gingrich, who thinks President Obama should withdraw Kagan's nomination before she even has a chance at a confirmation hearing, couldn't disagree more. [Politico]

It Just Keeps Getting Worse for Cougars

First science tells cougars that their penchant for young studs may send them to an early grave, and now Google is coming out against the big cats. What a week! According to the Times, Google has decided that cougar dating sites, like CougarLife.com, are too risqué to be a part of its ad network. That means ads for cougar-y websites will no longer appear on "more than 6,700 Web sites, including Ask.com, YouTube and MySpace." Those ads account for 60 percent of CougarLife.com's traffic. The funny thing is, Google is okay with dating websites that work in the reverse, setting up older men with younger ladies. The other funny thing is that Google is filtering out these websites by searching for the word "cougar." That means they can go right by the filter by renaming the cougar. Here's a suggestion: Mellencamps.

Massive Oil Plumes Discovered Under Gulf

As nasty and scary as the oil floating on top of the Gulf of Mexico is, things are only worse underneath. That became clear once again yesterday when scientists discovered massive oil plumes floating underwater, including one that's ten miles long, three miles wide, and 300 feet thick. The plumes, which deplete the oxygen in the water, are threatening to kill off much of the sea life around them. Meanwhile, BP's latest plan to stem the flow of oil into the Gulf with a mile-long tube that would siphon it to a tanker is still not working. [NYT]
