With the Cannes Film Festival on in full swing, can Bollywood's very own export to Hollywood Madame Mallika Sherawat be far away from all the action? Mallika, who's seen more at international events these days, made her presence felt in a rather sensational way at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday.
In what can be termed as a novel way to promote her upcoming film Hissss, Mallika made heads turn as she did a special photo-shoot with a live snake. Mallika shared this information with her millions of fans on popular social networking site Twitter. Said the actress, "And now for a very special and private photo shoot in Cannes with my date, Rudy the Sssnake:)" For Mallika there could have been no better way to promote the film as she plays a snake woman in the film. The paparazzi surely went crazy as Madame Sherawat posed and pouted rather comfortably with the creepy looking creature.
While Hissss directed by Jennifer Lynch is all slated to release this August, Mallika making sure that the promotions for this film are nothing short of 'Hissstoric'.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 17 May 2010 | 7:21 am Boogie Woogie not worried about competition

If success starts from the alphabet 'S', Rakesh Roshan would deny it hands down. For him though, 'K' has always been the word which would define success ever since his Khudgarz days. Thanks to a fan who wrote a letter to Rakesh while he was an actor and suggested him to make films as a producer and a director starting with 'K'. There was no looking back for Roshan after he read the letter. Then followed hits and only hits, blockbusters and only blockbusters and Hrithik Roshan and only Hrithik Roshan. With his new film Kites being the talk of the town, Rakesh relishes some good memories about the alphabet 'K', talks about his star son, his conviction in Anurag Basu, the new find Barbara Mori, the talented Kangna Ranaut and why Bollywood is still a small pond where our industry is happy being in. All this with UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent - Devansh Patel. Oh! I forgot something...and his big quote - "I can vouch for Kites that not a single film in India is made up to the standard of this film." (V)ouch!
Hrithik Roshan - The star son
Hrithik's goal is not to cross over and do Hollywood films. No. That is not his goal. Our goal is to show to the world market that India can make good films too because we too have good actors and good technicians. If we succeed in Kites, and if there is an offer for Hrithik from the West, he isn't going to leave India and settle down there. He might do one film to work with some better filmmakers out there. It will be a big pride for me and my family if Hrithik does a Hollywood film and with Kites, I am pushing him into the world market.
Kites was first planned to be directed by me. I happened to be in some of the award functions and four names popped up every time I saw the best film categories - Munnabhai, Rang De Basanti, Krissh and Gangster. But somehow I was a little curious to know why a film like Gangster would fit into such nominations. So I saw the film and loved it. I was completely blown by Anurag Basu's direction. He deserves a good break. I called him and asked him, "I want Hrithik to work with you. Have you got any good story?" Anurag said, "No Rakeshji. I make small films with small budgets. With Hrithik, I'll need a bigger canvas." Seeing his honesty, I told him, "I have a story, and if it touches you, and you think that you will do full justice to the film, then I want you to direct it." Anurag wasn't sure if I was willing to give him Kites to direct. After a month, Anurag came back with his own thoughts and a few changes and I was convinced that he will be the man to direct Kites.
Canvas
There are two things. When I was making Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, I could've shot the same thing in Madh Island too. But I didn't. The content would've been the same but what about the canvas? Canvas is not that I'm putting thousand dancers instead of ten dancers. That's throwing away money. If it's a desert, it has to be different. We have seen the Thar desert, but what if we get the desert from Mexico. That stays in your mind. The ambience has a local flavour.
Barbara Mori
We were looking out for a lot of girls who could speak Spanish. We were sure that we didn't want any Indian actress because it would look fake. So I went to Los Angeles and met two to three actresses out there. But then I thought, I wouldn't be comfortable to make Kites with such big names too. A friend of mine called me on my return to Mumbai and urged me to watch a Spanish film. There was Barbara Mori in the film. In the very first instinct, I liked her. She had to be my heroine. I showed it to Anurag and he too approved of her. Even Hrithik said, "This is the girl for Kites." I flew from Mumbai to Los Angeles with Anurag Basu and she flew down from Mexico to Los Angeles. We narrated the script to her. She liked it initially. What we wanted was right in front of us. She didn't know English at all and that's what we wanted. An hour's narration took me four hours to narrate to Barbara Mori. She was a keen listener and had tears in her eyes in-between the narration. Then she would laugh. Barbara immediately said 'Yes' to Kites.
Bankable
I am thankful to Kangna Ranaut for accepting the role in Kites. She is a very honest girl, a thorough professional and would come up to me and say, "Rakeshji, Anurag ko bulao. Kya karna hain, kaise karna hain." (Rakesh, please call Anurag and tell me what am I to do and how) Kangna's English accent isn't good. So we kept a tutor for her as her role is of a girl born and brought up in the United States of America. Kangna religiously learned how to speak English with an American accent.
Bollywood - A small pond
Our Indian Film Industry has become stagnant. We don't want to grow. We want to use the same comedy formula in all our films, the same thriller angle in all our films. Yes, there are some good films coming out since a few years like Dev D, Love Sex Aur Dhoka, etc which are a good start. We are trying to change lanes and that's very promising. But maybe we are not getting the success we want. Not to forget, we are changing the audiences mind too. If we give them all bikini girls, those days are gone.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 17 May 2010 | 5:01 am Shekhar Kapur invites Tim Burton to IndiaInternationally acclaimed Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur says he has invited Hollywood director Tim Burton, who specialises in dark and quirky themes, to scout for locations in India for a film. In the ad, Bagheri - covered only by her long hair - poses on a dark "horse" next to the words "Don't Get Taken for a Ride, Horse-Drawn Carts Are Cruel". By appearing in the ad, Bagheri seeks to warn potential tonga and victoria passengers that these joyrides are joyless for the horses and potentially dangerous for both riders and horses.
"Horse carts are cruel and outdated and should be relegated to the history books", says Bagheri. "In the city, the mix of horses and traffic can make for a lethal combination for horses and passengers."

Mani Ratnam's Raavan has just been given a new song, thanks to that poet par excellence Gulzar who saw the film and suggested the embellishment. The director, always open to fresh ideas from his team, readily agreed. Composer Rahman was informed and that's how Raavan got a new song.
Gulzar Saab, who just back from Goa after participating in the stage rendition of four of his plays, says the song was almost a gift he owed Mani Ratnam for gifting him something that he, Gulzar, had never received in his entire 47-year old career as a lyricist.
Mani sent the poet-lyricist a note after the release of the Raavan music congratulating Gulzar Saab for the songs.
Says Gulzar Saab, "In my entire career I've never received such a heartwarming endorsement of my work. I received a note from Mani Ratnam congratulating me and saying he's very proud of the music. And look at the humility of this genius. No filmmaker has ever sent me a note like this. Mani is the only one. And this one gesture has enhanced my respect for him even more."
Not only this gesture, Gulzar Saab also received an invitation from Mani to see the film at a special screening for which the poet flew down to Chennai recently.
It was there that the new song suddenly happened.
Recounts Gulzar Saab, "After editing Raavan, Mani wanted me to watch the film. No filmmaker invites even the technical crew for a preview, let alone the lyricist. I flew down to Chennai to watch the film. I'd never do something like this for anyone else. This is how strongly I feel about this man's humility and greatness."
As the end-credits rolled and Rahman's music began, Mani Ratnam and Gulzar Saab thought there ought to be a song at the end.
That's how Gulzar Saab wrote an additional number for Raavan... 'Ab Iss Shareer Ke Sirey Khol Dey/Aur Goongi Aatma Ko Bol Dey'.
Says Gulzar Saab, "Both Mani and I felt the music that Rahman had composed for the end titles was too beautiful to go wordless. We decided to give words to Rahman's creation."
Rahman was then given the task of turning the music piece into a song. Interestingly neither Mani Ratnam nor A. R. Rahman fully understands Gulzar's Urdu poetry.
Defends Gulzar Saab, "But they are never short of questions. Never does a word go in until Mani is fully convinced of its relevance. He's never hesitant about asking. I would be appalled if my words were accepted blindly by a director. Even if his Urdu is weak, Mani has a terrific sense of poetry and images."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 17 May 2010 | 3:42 am Raavanan revealed! - Rediff
Source: Entertainment - Google News | 17 May 2010 | 3:42 am Exploring the 10 year journey of Hrithik Roshan [Part IV]
In this special four part feature, Joginder Tuteja would be taking readers through the 10 years journey of Hrithik Roshan which has been nothing but a roller coaster ride. Seeing early success, Hrithik saw himself starting at the bottom of the barrel before a great resurgence brought a turnaround in fortunes.
(Concluding) Part IV of this feature takes readers through the risky route that Hrithik has (successfully) undertaken during last three years and is expected to follow in the years ahead
That scary feel
Jodhaa Akbar had more wrongs going for it than rights throughout its making. An exhausting schedule took it's toll on the actors, period drama meant that research was always a challenge (something which also saw controversies building up around the release), there were tell tale marks of tiredness setting in as the film struggled to come close to the finishing mark, industry detractors too had their daggers out as attacking a period drama is always a convenient exercise, the music (by A.R. Rahman) too didn't find
much appreciation before the release and there were talks that even the producers (UTV Motion Pictures) were worried about their product's eventual prospects.
Their worries weren't ill placed though. On release, the morning shows opened to a lukewarm response. This was the age of multiplexes and it was the first weekend that announced a film's success or failure. In case of Jodhaa Akbar, it seemed that the film was headed more towards being a box office disappointment since despite pick up in collections, there weren't any huge roars from audience that would have brought the film into a comfort zone. And then a miracle happened!
The film hung on to his life and started showing good sustenance even on week days. By the time second weekend came calling, the writing was clear on the wall - 'The hit run of Hrithik Roshan was there to stay'. Despite it's near four hour length (with no trimming coming in despite criticism), Jodhaa Akbar found good money coming its way. Of course no major releases for weeks at stretch meant that the film had a clear run but still the fact remained that this Ashutosh Gowariker film added on to Hrithik's successes. It may not have come anywhere close to the benchmark created by Dhoom 2 but ensured nevertheless that audience would have their hearts beating for the man when his next film comes calling.
A landmark year ahead
Though it wasn't designed this way (Kites could have released in 2009 itself), the fact remains that yet again, it was time for a two year break for Hrithik as far as his big screen appearance was concerned. Are the audience complaining? Well yes, they were till last year but not anymore as the promos have finally hit the screens, hence ensuring that the
film is pretty much for the keeps. For them as well as industry in general, the film is a huge bet by itself since Bollywood is going through its lowest phase ever, at least in the current year. Roshan family, with an outsider Anurag Basu, had a job cut down for them and this time around, nothing less than extraordinary would be acceptable by anyone. To the film's credit, buzz is quite good already and though there is still a month to go for the release, there is huge amount of anticipation build up that has taken place.
However, the man amidst all the action, Hrithik Roshan, can well be expected to be the most worried (or shall we say anxious?) of all. For audience, Kites is just another film from which they are expecting three hours of non-stop entertainment. For industry, Kites is just one of those 5 odd films this year which come with the potential of doing a business of 100 crores plus. However, for Hrithik it is a big risk which could result in terrific gains or terrible losses. For him, this is one film where he has given two years of his life and faced some in-house issues at work as well as home front. He knows that he cannot disappoint the audience or the industry but the biggest of it all; he can't afford to disappoint himself. Yes, there is a Guzaarish coming before close of year as well but when it comes to Kites, which is a home production where a sum of dozens of crores has been invested, nothing, and really nothing, can afford to go wrong.
Will he get it right? Well, if he is indeed following the Aamir Khan model of working, something which has taken the shape of a magic potion that always works, he certainly will!
