KRK sends legal notice to Prakash Jha; claims to own rights to title Raajneeti

The problems for Raajneeti seem to be getting more pronounced. Earlier this week, there was a Mumbai-based social worker Naseem Khan who filed a petition in court against Raajneeti asking for its release to be stopped because one of the central characters apparently resembles Sonia Gandhi. Now one hears that actor and self-styled star Kamal R Khan (or KRK as he likes to be called) has sent Prakash Jha a legal notice claiming rights over the title Raajneeti. When contacted Jha admits Kamaal, known to generate publicity for himself through various controversies, has indeed sent a legal notice claiming copyrights over the title Raajneeti. "But my lawyers are looking into it .There's absolutely nothing in this claim. We shouldn't give any importance to people who jump into the picture at the time of release for whatever reasons. Look at the way Rakesh Roshan is being harassed over Kites by some person claiming to be entitled to crores of rupees. Earlier we had someone making claims over Ram Gopal Varma's Rann days before release. This is not done!" Speaking on Mr Naseem Khan's claims that Raajneeti casts aspersion on one of the most revered politicians of the country, Prakash Jha retorts, "Let all these self-styled supports of Soniaji come forward to show their loyalty. Am I an irresponsible citizen and filmmaker who would do something so foolish as to portray Soniaji in a bad light? No one has seen a frame of Raajneeti. How does anyone presume that Katrina's character has any resemblance to Soniaji? Have I said it anywhere? Has Katrina said it anywhere? Let Soniaji watch Raajneeti and decide." Ram Gopal Varma very recently and Rakesh Roshan during the release of Krazzy 4 when composer Ram Sampat made plagiarism charges, had to opt for hefty out-of-court settlement to pay up to get their films released. This time both Rakesh Roshan and Prakash Jha are adamant on not giving in to what they see as arm-twisting tactics. About an out-of-court settlement with the aforementioned Mr Naseem Khan, Prakash Jha said, "Over my dead body. I'd burn the prints of my film rather than give into such blackmail. No out-of-court settlement for me. I've seen enough legal obstacles in my life. This is nothing."

Nadiadwala announces release date of his musical Anjaana Anjaani

Sajid Nadiadwala Celebrations are continuing for Sajid Nadiadwala. While his Housefull is holding on well at the box office after a terrific opening, he is also readying up plans for his first ever musical Anjaana Anjaani. The film is now all set for 24th September release. "That's right, 24th September is the confirmed release date for Anjaana Anjaani. This is the first ever 100% romantic musical film from my banner. I can proudly say that this is the best ever music made for a film of mine", says Nadiadwala. Coming from him, this is indeed a tall statement since traditionally; music has stayed on to be one of the highlights of his movies. Right from Jeet till Housefull, his movies have been remembered for their popular appeal. Whether it is Judwaa, Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Jaan-E-Mann, Heyy Babyy or Kambakkht Ishq - movies coming from the house of Nadiadwala have boasted of at least one chartbuster track. "Well, it's going to be an entirely different experience in case of Anjaana Anjaani", says Nadiadwala who certainly has an eye on mass entertainers, "Vishal-Shekhar, who have composed the music of my film, have touched a new high this time around. There are seven songs in the film and I can comfortably state that they have managed to do something which is on the lines of Aashiqui. Music created by Nadeem-Sharavan for that film is considered cult today. I am sure Anjaana Anjaani too will find similar space for itself in years to come." Association of Vishal-Shekhar and Siddharth goes back a long way. After creating music for Siddharth's debut film Salaam Namaste, Vishal-Shekhar also collaborated with the young filmmaker for Ta Ra Rum Pum and Bachna Ae Haseeno. While Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra are the obvious star attraction in Anjaana Anjaani, Nadiadwala continues to be mighty excited with the way music has shaped up for his film. "For director Siddharth Anand as well as me, Anjaana Anjaani has been en entirely new experience. For some movies, the highlight factor is action or comedy; in case of Anjaana Anjaani it is music. Vishal and Shekhar have given their best ever score till date", says Nadiadwala. Other than being conscious about the way music has shaped up for his film, Nadiadwala also ensured that the best of the best was roped in for Anjaana Anjaani when it came to technical front. The film's DOP is Ravi Chandran, Sharmishtha Roy has handled art direction while Nakul Kamte is the sound designer. "We have roped in number of top technicians, most of whom are National Award winners", says Nadiadwala proudly, " Anjaana Anjaani was meant to be a quality fare and I am glad that it has lived up to my vision on how a romantic musical should be." Well, going by the confidence that Nadiadwala has in his film, one looks forward to see how the film has indeed shaped up. Come 24th September and we would know.

Exploring the 10 years journey of Hrithik Roshan [Part III]

In this special four part feature, Joginder Tuteja would be taking readers through the 10 years journey of Hrithik Roshan which has been nothing but a roller coaster ride. Seeing early success, Hrithik saw himself starting at the bottom of the barrel before a great resurgence brought a turnaround in fortunes. Part III of this feature takes readers through a phase where forward planning by Roshans resulted in a great revival of fortunes for Hrithik Forward planning Coming from a family made of people belonging to the world of films comes with its own definite advantages and no one other than Hrithik would be able to vouch for this better. When the going wasn't good for a couple of years when all films starring Hrithik were disappointing either critically or commercially, Roshans were busy devising a plan of their own. They were not waiting for the final nail in the coffin to be set before smelling the coffee. They conceived the idea of Koi Mil Gaya and began preparations for modern day India's first authentic sci-fi film. The picture was clear on the wall - Outside film makers had their set notion about Hrithik and they weren't willing to experiment. Hrithik too needed a hit fast and a huge one at that, lest he was crowned 'Kumar Gaurav'. Totally surrendering himself to the vision that his father had, he began working hard on the toughest role of his career ever, that of Rohit Mehra, who had the body of a 20 year old but the mind of a 10 year kid. It was history revisited all over again as Koi Mil Gaya saw a massive all India opening for Hrithik Roshan. Along with Jadoo, he was back to being the nationwide heartthrob all over again. Being unconventional was suddenly in. For Hrithik, it was not just a matter of box office success coming in, but also a revival of prestige, something that was much dearer to him than all the money which was flowing in. He was hailed as an actor par excellence and before Aamir Khan made it a habit to surprise audience with every release of his, it was Hrithik who showed the world that being unconventional, unpredictable and unassuming can work as well. Though the film was a massive success, it also kick started the process of some extreme strategising by Hrithik Roshan. Ladies and gentlemen, Hrithik had made up his mind. Multiple films were out, select films were in and spacing of releases by a wide margin was going to be the order of the day. And yes! the placard lying in the backyard finally found its place where it truly belonged - The garbage bin! The Road Less Travelled If at all Hrithik's career has to be plotted, it would be pre-Koi Mil Gaya and post-Koi Mil Gaya. Let's just play on sheer numbers here. Before the release of Koi Mil Gaya, Hrithik had 9 releases to his name in 3 years. Post the release of Koi Mil Gaya, Hrithik has been seen in only 5 films (including Luck By Chance where he had an extended guest appearance) in over 6 years. Doesn't that tell the tale? And no, we are not talking about a superstar who turned into a star and then a flop actor and then completely vanished from the face of the earth due to which such a treatment was meted to him. Instead it is by choice and not by chance that he has seen his turnaround from being a superstar to star to being finished and then turning into a superstar all over again. The strategy had been pretty much put into action and it was only after a year's gap that he was seen on the big screen again in Lakshya. For both Farhan Akhtar and Hrithik Roshan, the film was akin to coming out of their safety zone. But they did that with aplomb. The film opened to mixed reviews and decent box office collections and though super success wasn't quite the order of the day, appreciation did come Hrithik's way as far as his brilliant performance was concerned. It is a different matter though that for many out there, the film enjoys a cult status today and finds repeat audience when it comes to home viewing. Meanwhile the gaps had started widening as far as his releases were concerned. Audience had to wait for full two years before Hrithik was seen on the big screen again. There was a clear Aamir Khan influence and while Hrithik prepared himself for far more physically challenging Krrish that stays on to be the most lavishly mounted and successful superhero film ever that has been churned out of Bollywood, his fans were turning impatient. Their persistence paid as Hrithik gave them not one but two reasons to smile. His Krrish was followed by Dhoom 2 and together both the films turned into bumper successes all over. Though Krrish was a worthy sequel to Koi Mil Gaya but it got some tongues wagging that Hrithik could deliver successful films only with his father. The all time highest collections of Dhoom 2 (before Om Shanti Om broke that record) had these tongues on leash. 2006 turned out to be a landmark year for Hrithik and it appeared that he would be primarily choosing action films in years to come. However, these years were spaced out by quite some gap. Though he made single shot special appearance as himself in I See You and Om Shanti Om, he involved himself completely in the making of his biggest epic drama till date - Jodhaa Akbar. (Visit this space again for the concluding Part IV of this feature which takes readers through the risky route that Hrithik has [successfully] undertaken during last three years and is expected to follow in the years ahead) Click here to read Exploring 10 year journey of Hrithik Roshan [Part I] - [Part II]

KJo, Sussanne and Gauri in New York for Kites US premiere

Karan Johar Mrs Shah Rukh Khan and Mrs Hrithik Roshan; Gauri and Sussanne to those who are friends; have traveled to New York in advance to spend some of their husband's money shopping before the grand premiere of Kites at Times Square on May 16. And giving them company is Karan Johar. Trust the ever-affable Karan Johar to be the 'awed' one out. Not having learnt his lesson from the crazy Twitter-related, over-generous praise for Gurinder Chadha's It's A Wonderful Afterlife, Karan is now going all out for the Roshans and their prestigious film Kites. And this time it's not just about placing complimentary comments on social websites, Karan is currently in New York, ostensibly for a longish holiday which would've ideally ended this week. Karan has decided to stay back in New York to attend the prestigious premiere of Kites on May 16 at Times Square, just for the Roshans. In fact he was this week joined by Gauri Khan, who will be representing her star-husband Shah Rukh at the premiere. Shah Rukh who can't attend the event as he's shooting for Ra.1 made sure that his wife represented them both at this very important occasion in the Roshan' life. Speaking from New York, Karan confirms, "Gauri and Sussanne Roshan are here. We're having the time of our lives. I am not thinking about work at all just enjoying myself." About his praise for Gurinder Chadha's severely criticized film, Karan defends, "Why not? I did it for a friend and a colleague. I'd do it again if I have to. I had earlier decided I'd no more praise my colleagues' works because they don't praise me for any of my films. But I don't think I can be that way. I love going all-out for my friends. I'm dying to see Badmaash Company. And if I like it I will praise it to the skies because Yash Uncle(Chopra) and Adi are family." Regarding the unconditional support to Kites, Karan says, "It's a big film for the Roshans who are very close to me and Shah Rukh. The success of Kites is also very important to the film industry. I've a release I Hate Luv Storys coming up in July. And if Kites works it'd mean favourable things for my films." Of course! Karan knows there would be no support from his colleagues when his film is released. "But that's okay. New York is an important venue for Bollywood. My Name Is Khan's shortened version was released her last week. Now it's a shortened international version of Kites. So we are working towards the same goal of taking Bollywood to the West." Incidentally, Karan had gone to New York with the express purpose of writing his next screenplay. But he has drawn a blank. "At the moment I'm all geared for the Kites premiere.
