Last Night on Late Night: Betty White's Frisky Jay-Z Encounter

In the afterglow of her SNL debut, Betty White relays to Jay Leno the sorted details of her hands-on encounter with Jay-Z. "He just got desperate, I guess" the 88-year-old TV and Internet darling said. Traces of animosity remain in the air like volcano ash as Craig Ferguson cruelly but accurately imitates a certain late night host who recently forced out another certain late night host. Next, The Colbert Report and The Daily Show tackle a favorite subject of theirs, the merciless and open mocking of Glenn Beck. Lewis Black, in an inspired rant, notes Glenn Beck's fascination with Fascism, and Stephen Colbert reveals a tried and true method for passing the SATs in the style of the conservative pundit. Finally, in another installment of the slightly more friendly Robert Pattinson roast, Jimmy Fallon explores the deep existential meaning of misnomers and abbreviations. Watch our recap to see what you missed.

Industry Roundup: Heigl Gains Eternal Youth, Dunst Heads Out On The Road

Forever Young: Katherine Heigl will star in The Age of Adaline, an “epic love story" written by Mills Goodloe and Sal Pascowitz, which follows a young woman born at the turn of the 20th century who is “rendered ageless” after an accident. After spending many years on her own, she meets a “man who might be worth losing her immortality.” Someone should really set this woman up with Richard Alpert. [HR]

Road Trip: Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast of the upcoming adaptation of On The Road, Walter Salles and Francis Ford Coppola’s take on the Jack Kerouac 1957 classic novel. The cast already includes Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley (Control) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy). Perhaps Dunst will be able to give Stewart some tips on how to maintain a flourishing career after appearing in a high-profile film franchise. Oh wait. [Variety]

Hug It Out: HBO is developing a "female-centric" comedy from the producers of Entourage which would follow a group of female friends “working and finding romance in Los Angeles.” The show will be produced by Entourage's Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson, along with Leah Rachel and Emily Montague, who developed the concept together. The new series will not be as “Hollywood-centric” as Entourage, sources said. That's cool, just don't let Ari near these ladies, please. [HR]

The Half Back Full-Time: Angus T. Jones, who plays Jake on Two and a Half Men, is close to finalizing a deal with Warner Bros TV to stay on the CBS hit for two more seasons. The 16-year-old’s salary is said to be in the low-to-mid $100,000-per-episode range. Phew, now that this is squared away, the speculating about the future of this show should totally be over. [Deadline]

Wild Times: Shirley MacLaine, Maria Bello and Christina Ricci are attached to star in Wild Oats, an action-comedy directed by Scott Marshall about a retired widow who gets lucky when she receives a Social Security payment made out for $900,000 instead of $900. She then takes her granddaughter to Vegas, only to attract media attention and eventually become a fugitive. For those of you who totally dug the crazy hijinks of The Hangover but really wished Shirley MacLaine was playing Bradley Cooper's part. [Variety]

Four Minus 9 Actor: Timothy Olyphant (Justified) will be replacing Sharlto Copley (District 9) in the DreamWorks flick I Am Number Four. Copley had to depart the project due to scheduling conflicts with his upcoming press obligations for The A-Team. Olyphant will be playing a guardian/mentor to the film’s title character, an alien-masking-as-human played by Alex Pettyfer. This is a shame since Copley obviously has ample experience dealing with aliens. [Variety]

Aussie Dog: FX has given the green light to the pilot Wilfred, a live-action comedy which is based on an Australian series of the same name. David Zuckerman (Family Guy) is adapting the new version, which he described as “about a guy, the girl next door, and mixed-breed dog, Wilfred, who is part Labrador retriever and part Russell Crowe on a bender.” Wow, this show sure sounds zany, huh? [Deadline]

Wedding Team Reunites: P. J. Hogan and Toni Collette, who worked together on Murial’s Wedding, will team up again on Mental, about a “charismatic, crazy hothead” who changes a family’s life when she becomes the nanny of five girls. Hogan wrote the script, which is based on his own experiences. Let's hope Collette isn't required to gain 40 pounds for this role as she did for Wedding. [Variety]

Minus D: Interpol will head out on tour this summer headlining dates across the U.S. and also opening for U2 in both America and Europe. Meanwhile, the band promises some “very exciting new recruits” to take the place of departed bassist Carlos D. Such suspense! [Pitchfork]

N.Y. Investigating Banks’ Influence on Rating Agencies, Times Says

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has launched an investigation of eight banks in order to ascertain whether they provided “misleading information” to rating agencies in an attempt to inflate the grades of certain mortgage securities, the Times is reporting tonight, based on two sources with knowledge of the investigation. The agencies have been criticized in the past for “overstating the quality of many mortgage securities that ended up losing money once the housing market collapsed.” Cuomo's current priority is uncovering the information that the banks provided to the rating agencies, as well as deducing whether or not the bankers knew that the ratings were overly positive. The targeted banks? Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, UBS, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Crédit Agricole and Merrill Lynch, which is now owned by Bank of America.

Vulture Exclusive: Details on What Went Wrong with NBC's Rockford Files Reboot

Do not defile this man's legacy

NBC's planned reboot of the 1970s private-eye classic series The Rockford Files, with mildly beloved rom-com prince Dermot Mulroney taking James Garner's iconic role, was one of the most hyped pilots of the fall. Many said it was a gimme to make the lineup: It's based on the iconic James Garner series, and was produced by Steve Carell and House executive producer David Shore. What could go wrong? Oh, wait, this could: a pilot so bad that it seemed like a crime. In fact, if it weren't for Carell and Shore's involvement, NBC would have written off the project days ago. Now, as the execs consider what to do, and with their Upfront just four days away, this much is clear: If the show does make the fall schedule, it will be in a vastly different form from what was just shot.

What went wrong? NBC isn't talking, but two people familiar with the situation said Rockford turned out to be more rehash than reinvention. The insiders place most of the blame on pilot director Michael Watkins (a TV-drama veteran who has helmed episodes of everything from Quantum Leap to NYPD Blue to Justified), saying he severely weakened a solid script with lackluster, even listless direction.

"The pilot looked like it was shot in the 1970s," said one person familiar with NBC's response, claiming everything from the lighting to the pacing looked dated — and not in a cool, retro way. "You didn't even know it was the current day until Jim pulled out his cell phone. It looked like Stephen J. Cannell directed it himself."

While much of the criticism of the Rockford pilot seems to center around the direction, there have been complaints about Mulroney's take on Rockford. Some people who've seen the pilot praise his work — "Dermot's adorable," said one viewer — while others suggest he simply didn't pop. One wag suggests (only half-jokingly) that NBC should start over from scratch and replace Mulroney with Lost star Josh Holloway. After all, he did acquit himself well as a cop in the "Sawyer and Miles: On the Case!" flash-sideways episodes this season.

Dawn Parouse, the Prison Break producer who was hired to take control of the day-to-day on the pilot just days before shooting began, apparently did her best to turn things around after seeing the disastrous first version. She personally supervised a marathon re-cutting session, working for nearly a week to get the pilot in better shape, one source said. But while the new cut played much better with NBC brass, it wasn't enough to convince them to give Rockford an early pickup. (They'd already given four other new dramas go-aheads.)

If NBC chooses to rework Rockford, it'll almost certainly be because of entertainment president Angela Bromstad. She made the reboot one of her top priorities shortly after she returned to the network last year, ordering a pilot script last July, far ahead of most orders. She's also good pals with Shore (while House airs on Fox, the show is produced by NBC's studio arm, overseen by Bromstad), and if she wants to keep Carell on The Office longer than season 7, when he's itching to leave, perhaps dumping his show isn't the best incentive. The combined weight of both of these men's involvement could be enough to convince NBC to give producers more time to investigate ways to make Rockford work.

Pixar Cancels Upcoming Newt

Pixar has reportedly canceled the 3D film Newt, which was scheduled to be released in the summer of 2011. The project was announced over two years ago, but there has been little news about the film since, which had led some prognosticators to wonder if it might be in trouble, The Pixar Blog says. The film was to follow the last remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet who were “forced together by science to save the species… but they can’t stand each other.” So now we will sadly never know what it would be like to see a Katherine Heigl movie in Pixar clothing. Bill Requiring Owners To Reveal Bedbug Histories In The Works

New York assemblywoman Linda B. Rosenthal is on a crusade to protect renters from encountering a Bedbug Surprise after their move-ins. She has introduced two bills to the state legislature: one which would require owners to disclose a five-year history of bedbug infestations to renters, and a second which would offer some compensation for those dealing with the expenses of eradicating the pest.

“As the scourge of bedbugs continues in New York, I am committed to giving my constituents the tools to protect themselves … from this plague,” she said.

It’s unclear when Albany will be voting on the measure, her spokesman said. It’s not like they’ve got anything else going on up there to deal with.

Katy Perry Had Surprising Inspiration For 'Gurls' Title

One of the many irritating things about Katy Perry’s sure-to-be-ubiquitous summer slice of pop “California Gurls” is that borderline-egregious spelling of “girls.” Well, it turns out that rather than simply a play to appeal to the Hot Topic masses, the decision to spell the word that way was in fact an homage to... Big Star’s 1974 single “September Gurls.”

Perry told EW that her manager Bradford is a “huge Big Star fan” and, in light of the recent death of the band’s Alex Chilton, Bradford asked Perry if she would trade out the “i” for a “u.” And if doing her friend a favor also happened to make for a title more palatable to the Twitter generation, all the better: “I don’t know the whole catalog of Big Star, but I did it because Bradford is one of my best friends and I thought it was cool," Perry said, "and you know, the kids like those variations."

Katy Perry says 'California Gurls" title is indeed a Big Star reference: Whoa! [Music Mix/EW]

White House to Cut Anti-Terror Funding for NYC

In a oddly timed announcement, the Obama administration is set to reveal tomorrow that it has cut anti-terror funds for New York City. The Department of Homeland Security informed New York officials yesterday that grants for mass transit security will be cut 27 percent (down to $111 million this year), and port security funds will be dropped by 25 percent (down to $33.8 million). Coming less than two weeks after the attempted Times Square car bombing, the cuts have raised the ire of Mayor Bloomberg, Sen. Schumer and others.

"For the administration to announce these cuts two weeks after the attempted Times Square bombing shows they just don’t get it and are not doing right by New York City on anti-terrorism funding," Schumer said. “Instead of distributing funding all over the country, they should focus their attention where the greatest threat exists — right here in New York.”

Obama will be visiting NYPD headquarters on Thursday afternoon to personally meet with officers to thank them for their efforts in managing the May 1 bomb scare.

No Ordinary Family and Wilde Kingdom Both Picked Up

The pilot pickup announcements keep on coming. ABC has picked up No Ordinary Family, which will star The Shield’s Michael Chiklis and Dexter’s Julie Benz as members of a family that develops super powers. And in addition to the four ordered series Fox announced this morning, the network has also picked up Mitch Hurwitz and Will Arnett's Wilde Kingdom, in which Arnett (who also co-wrote the pilot) will play a rich “Beverly Hills jackass” who falls for a “charitable tree-hugging woman,” played by Keri Russell. Good news for fans of Arrested Development, Felicity and Community’s Jeff/Britta dynamic.

The Four Questions that Will Define Cannes Dealmaking

The Cannes festival summons up visions of glamor and wealth, parties on yachts and couture on red carpet. Today’s economy, however, summons up none of those visions. And the very uniquely shaky current financial climate means the film festival will welcome a particularly dissonant crowd of dealmakers; Europeans and Americans will be wondering if they’re watching each other from passing trains, Europe heading towards ruin, America towards boon (although still unnerved by last week’s stock market drop). It will all make for an unstable market made all the twitchier by these four questions...

Will the studios run for the middle?
Many insiders are predicting a dampened market at the 2010 festival. However, that’s not to say that the studios aren’t going to be spending at all. In fact, they're now in the market to buy the kind of mid-priced movie that they'd stopped making themselves. After 2008’s financial crash, movie theater profits increased, as people thought that a ticket actually was a good entertainment value, as compared to, say, buying a DVD. Tempted by this growing attendance, studios decided the best thing to do was to stock up on big-budget, four-quadrant movies like Spider-Man and Transformers that would appeal to everybody. Either that or the occasional low-budget film that their bottom lines barely feel. But the $20-$40 million movie was the third rail.

Yet the big-risk-bigger-reward rule doesn’t necessarily hold true over time. Let’s take an example from 2004, a year from which its movies are just now having their complete profits calculated: A source tells us that Fox’s I, Robot cost $147 million. Today, after all box office and ancillaries are factored in, the movie has made approximately $55 million profit. The studio also released Alien vs. Predator in 2004. It cost $40 million; without the same huge marketing costs and free of gross-participation players like Will Smith, it has now made a $92 million profit. So in risking nearly $100 million more for I, Robot, they made half as much.

A new desire for the middle ground will be what may decide one of the festival’s biggest deals. Sony, Universal, and Fox are all in negotiations with Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp (which made Taken and Hitman) to acquire some of Besson’s pre-packaged modestly-priced action films, the kind that usually hit solid doubles or better: Taken, which cost $25 million, made $227 million worldwide. The idea of easily acquiring some reasonably priced finished product is especially appealing to Sony, which has a giant hole in their schedule next year where Spider-Man 4 was supposed to be.

Stars will sing for their supper, but will anybody feed them?
Besson’s mid-range movies are appealing because they’re not that risky: fast, bloody action will always make its money back when it doesn’t have that much money to make back. More thoughtful movies in this price range, however, are a tougher sell, no matter who’s attached. That’s why many name-brand stars attached to complicated or more serious projects are coming to Cannes to try to drum up international financing to get their films in production. For example, Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts are attached to The Impossible, a take on the 2004 Indonesian tsunami with sci-fi overtones (and to be directed by The Orphanage’s Juan Antonio Bayona); it already has U.S. distribution through Summit, but no production budget. Clive Owen is also coming chapeau in hand to get funding for Intruders, a drama about an 11-year-old girl confronting her demons.

European governments have just poured a trillion dollars into rescuing their sickly profligate EU neighbors, so Cannes might seem like the last place one would head for financing. However, amidst such uncertainty, Hollywood is hoping that the state-funded media companies attending the festival will want to spend like drunken sailors one last time before their bureaucratic nannies cinch the purse strings tight.

Will the studio premieres translate to box office?
Usually Cannes features an array of big studio projects opening to big fanfare; who could forget Jerry Seinfeld ziplining in a bee costume for Bee Movie, no matter how hard one may try? But this year there are only a handful of “event” debuts, and those films will be scrutinized all the more for their scarcity.

If Robin Hood debuts to jeers tonight, will it doom the Russell Crowe film? (Or was it already doomed?) Then again, at least the film opens in theaters in only two days, giving it time to outrun any transatlantic boos in its first domestic weekend. But what of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps? Fox delayed its opening until September to premiere at Cannes, where Stone is beloved. But while debuting any studio picture at Cannes gets you attention and prestige, prestige doesn’t get audiences off the sofa. Plus, it also carries big risks: If WS:MNS is welcomed poorly, four months is a lot of time for a film to marinate in bad online buzz.

Then there’s the one studio film in competition at Cannes: Doug Liman's Valerie Plame story, Fair Game. Ripped-from-the-headlines films about the Iraq War have collectively made about as much as Gigli, so even if Fair Game is a Cannes favorite, what does that really translate to? Hell, critics carried The Hurt Locker around on their shoulders all the way from the festival circuit to the Oscars, and it only grossed $16 million.

Will execs' expense accounts still stand up to Cannes prices?
At the Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferrat, where agents and execs historically go to woo exciting new international talent, prices remain proudly pre-recessionary. At the newly-renovated bar, “The Bill,” for example — a cocktail of strawberry liqueur, lemon juice, Cointreau, and gin named after President Clinton — costs $32.91. And if you shop around, you're not gonna find much cheaper. So is the money worth the Moet?

We say: Bottoms up! Here’s to finding out the hard way!

Judge Rejects Paterson's Furlough of State Workers

Two days after Gov. Paterson’s furlough plan was approved by the state legislature (preventing the government from shutting down), a federal judge has temporarily blocked the one-day furlough of state workers scheduled for next week, complicating the governor’s strategy for keeping the state from completely running out of money by the end of the month. District Court judge Lawrence Kahn issued a temporary restraining order against Paterson, in light of a lawsuit from unions representing state employees and public university teachers that posited the furloughs were illegal.

Kahn continued to be a major buzzkill for Paterson as he prevented him from seeking further furloughs until after a May 26 hearing in Kahn's chambers. He said in his ruling that the furloughs would cause “irreparable harm” and the unions would probably win their case in court, the two factors leading him to hand down the temporary restraining order. State agencies apparently were already making hasty contingency plans when the ruling was announced, temporarily closing a call center run by the State Department of Taxation and Finance and the DMV.

NBC Picks Up Perfect Couples

En route to entirely obviating all the surprise in its upfront presentation next week, NBC has picked up its sixth show for fall 2010. The sitcom Perfect Couples follows three couples, a normal one, a crazy one, and one that thinks its perfect (Olivia Munn is one of half of the last). Basically, it's like HBO's Tell Me You Love, but less depressing, less naked, and hopefully for NBC, less canceled. Meanwhile, a show that did have a tell-tale twitter, Matthew Broderick's sitcom Beach Lane, is officially dead. At least Patton Oswalt can consider that one lost job that wasn't really lost. Christina Aguilera: Latex Poseur?

Christina Aguilera recently gushed in an interview about latex, her "go-to" Bionic fabric because "It's very slick, it shines. You can lubricate it up." However, she poses on the cover of German GQ wearing nothing but boots and gloves that aren't latex. But this cover is probably the most honest version of Christina we've seen in some time. She doesn't want to wear latex — she doesn't want to wear anything! She probably only likes latex because it's one of the closest things to human skin people can wear. Well, according to condom companies.

Mark Sanford Is Hiking the Appalachian Trail Again

And by that we mean, of course, that he's back with that Argentinian woman. Sanford has admitted to the press that he was with his former mistress (he's divorced now, so she's really more like a standard girlfriend at this point), Maria Belen Chapur, in Florida over the weekend, trying to rekindle the flame.

"As a matter of record, everybody in this room knows exactly who I was with over the weekend," Sanford said. "That is no mystery to anybody given what I said last summer. And, you know, the purpose was obviously to see if something could be restarted on that front given the rather enormous geographic gulf between us. And time will tell. I don't know if it will or won't."

Best of luck, you crazy romantic. And don't be so pessimistic. Your shared passion for The Holiday, a very mediocre movie, can overcome all obstacles.

Party Lines Slideshow: Ari Graynor, Jesse Eisenberg, Harvey Keitel, and More at the Holy Rollers Premiere

Holy Rollers, a fact-based drama about Hasidic teens moonlighting as ecstasy smugglers directed by Kevin Asch and starring Jesse Eisenberg, had its premiere at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema earlier this week. We asked Ari Graynor, who plays the girlfriend of an Israeli drug dealer, if she ventured into the city's Hasidic-heavy neighborhoods as part of her research. "The closest I got to that was going on a Mitzvah Mobile with Jesse and Kevin near Kevin’s mom’s apartment," she told us. "We had latkes and we prayed and we lit the menorah candles, and that was pretty great. And then I watched a video that Kevin made from his former ecstasy days, and that’s how I got into understanding the world of ecstasy. I didn’t do any E, but I watched Kevin’s old videos of it." Back in 2006, Morgan Stanley Traders Were More Interested in Golf Than in Creating CDOs

The news that Morgan Stanley may be under investigation for misleading investors about the quality of the collateralized-debt obligations that it was selling and shorting has taken a toll on the company's stock price and received an unhappy reception from inside the firm. Still, some people there might be pleased that the accusations make Morgan Stanley, which barely made it through the crisis alive, look as canny and clever as their longtime competitor, the powerful Goldman Sachs, which was formally accused by the SEC of doing the same thing last month. However, the following snippet from Greg Zuckerman's book The Greatest Trade Ever, in which two traders at Morgan Stanley meet with John Paulson, the hedge-fund manager at whose behest Goldman Sachs created the CDOs, does not.

Paulson wasn't getting much more respect from Wall Street's establishment. Brad Rosenberg, Paulson's bond trader, invited two Morgan Stanley traders, John Pearce and Joseph Naggar, to visit the office, hoping to learn more about the market and include Morgan Stanley as one of its brokers on Paulson's big trade. Pearce and Naggar showed up in khaki pants and polo shirts, saying they didn't have much time to talk because they were late for a golf outing with other clients. "Let's try to make this as brief as we can," Naggar said. Pellegrini and Rosenberg, in suits and ties, handed the Morgan Stanley traders a list of subprime mortgage-backed bonds that the firm was hoping to bet against. "Here are the names we'd like to put more shorts on," Pellegrini said. Pearce and Naggar didn't seem to have much interest in trading with Paulson's team, though, or in spending time on their questions. "It sounds like a good trade; maybe we'll do it," Pearce said, with a laugh. Pearce was just humoring them, Rosenberg thought. As they ended the meeting, Pearce said, "Well, if we get more capacity, we'll put it on for you." Pearce and Naggar already had placed a few bearish subprime trades for their own firm, though they didn't want to let that on in the meeting. To the Paulson team, it was another exasperating experience.

"That was a waste of time," a glum Pellegrini said to Rosenberg as they walked out of the room.

In the end, Goldman Sachs made billions off of its short positions on housing. Morgan Stanley lost $9 billion. Even when it comes to potentially criminal behavior, they can't catch up.

Do Macy’s Lines Cheapen Designer Brands?

More and more labels are signing deals with Macy's to do exclusive collections for the department store. P. Diddy recently ginned up some paperwork for a Sean John Macy's exclusive. Tommy Hilfiger and Diesel Jeans also have exclusive Macy's lines, according to the Post. And though they won't admit it to the paper, Hugo Boss, which is known for its high-end men's suits, will supposedly launch an exclusive Macy's line next year called White Label. This is reportedly part of Hugo Boss CEO Claus-Dietrich Lahrs's five-year plan to double U.S. business, which is hard to do as long as they stay confined to stores like Saks and Nordstrom.

Brushing off concerns that a lower-priced line could tarnish Hugo Boss's cachet, Lahrs is "going after Ralph Lauren," and mimicking the American fashion icon's strategy of pursuing middle-market shoppers in addition to wealthy ones, according to a source close to the label.

But what effect, if any, do these lines have on the high-end business? Will the guy that bought an expensive Hugo Boss suit from Saks feel like a dumb schmuck when his friend gets one from Macy's for less, because his friend's suit is cheaper and its mere existence reduces the specialness of his own? Ralph Lauren has been able to maintain the mystique of its high-end collection while dominating, like, Dillard's. But fashion, a slave to extremes, loves things that are either Bergdorf or Target — but not much in between.

This Is What 210,000 Gallons of Oil a Day Rocketing Out of an Undersea Geyser Looks Like

BP is extremely reluctant to release the footage they have of their catastrophic underwater gas leak, probably because yet another visual of exactly how badly the Gulf of Mexico is being polluted (and how fast!) is the last thing they need. And according to Robert Gibbs, the U.S. government can't compel them to release it. But the oil and natural gas company did release this photo today, the only public visual documentation of exactly what it looks like when 210,000 gallons of oil a day (4 million gallons so far!) shoot out of a broken pipe at the bottom of the sea floor. It seems like BP is probably right not to release more — crude oil in motion does look a little bit like evil.

Another Goldman Sachs Conspiracy Theory

Floated by architecture critic Paul Goldberger in this week's New Yorker: "Forty-three stories tall and two city blocks long, the Goldman building appears to have been designed in the hope of rendering the company invisible." Very observant Goldberger! MAN VS. BLOGGER: The Bear Grylls Interview

Bear Grylls is an all-too-appropriate name for a man who goes out of his way to put himself in deadly and terrifying situations. Best known for his nightmare-inducing encounters on Man vs. Wild, Bear is back with an all new show on the Discovery Channel. The series is called Worst Case Scenario, airing Wednesdays (tonight!) on Discovery Channel at 10 PM. Based on the popular books by the same name, Bear walks you through potentially life-threatening situations, all while giving you tips that could one day save your life. We know. Heavy stuff.

Despite Bear’s penchant for doing things no right-minded human would agree to do, he seems to have a pretty good sense of humor about most of it. We had a chance to chat with Mr. Bear over the phone while he was heading to the airport to shoot some new Man vs. Wild episodes in Australia. What you are about to read will almost definitely stay with you forever… enjoy!!

Michelle: I know you have three sons, Huckleberry, Marmaduke and Jesse. Does Jesse feel a little left out that he’s not named after an iconic character?

Bear: Jesse has a way more unusual name in the UK than Huckleberry or Marmaduke, so no, I think he feels in the fold. We all have slightly weird names, but life’s meant to be an adventure.

MC: I love it. I have to say, I’ve seen many of your videos before, but I just re-lived your eating of the larva and your sleeping inside a camel. Have you ever considered selling a “Bear Grylls Diet,” where you just make DVDs of you just doing completely nauseating things?

Bear: Yah I think there would be a small readership or small viewership.

MC: People would drop hundreds of pounds just by watching you do these horribly nasty things. It would be very successful.

Bear: Somebody wrote in to Discovery the complaining. They said they sat down as a family to eat dinner and watch the program on a Sunday evening, and I had done something that actually made them throw up all over their trays.  Somehow that was my fault.

Ahead: Lion cubs, diarrhea and Tom Cruise. Yes, you want to click.

MC: You really throw yourself into your work, perhaps more than anybody else on TV. Number one, I only hope they’re paying you millions and millions of dollars for what you’re doing.

Bear: If only. If only.  Money has always been quite low down the list of motivation, and my wife goes ‘Look, you should make it higher up your list.’ But we have a blast.  I’ve always said, we’ve done Man vs. Wild for about five years, it’s what I’ve always loved and really the only thing I’m good at and I could still be doing it long after the TV cameras are gone.

MC: The thing is, you’re the only one who is good at it. There’s nobody else who does it.

Bear: Nobody else is stupid enough to get themselves into the straits that I get into.

MC: I would never suggest that, but you said it, so I’m happy we got that out of the way.  Now, have you ever actually hugged a bear?

Bear: No. I have held healthy respects of bears along with assorted crocodiles, snakes and lots of other animals. You know, bears are dangerous, you have to be super careful. So yah, I’m quite weary with them. I’ve had lots of exciting encounters with them, but I haven’t hugged one, no.

MC: This is a real shame, because it’s long been a dream of mine. I want to sedate one first, then have my way with it, just for one night. You know?

Bear: I’ve done that with a lion, actually.

MC: (grave seriousness) Tell me everything.

Bear: That was exciting. It was a lion cub that was quite mature. I remember him just lying on top of me, and I didn’t have a shirt on, just a pair of shorts. I had this cub on my chest, and then it just kind of looked around, sort of flicking his paws, and it went ‘chink,’ and five claws just went down the center of me, just in my chest and out. I hadn’t even noticed he’d done it.  Then blood was gushing.

MC: It’s like Hugh Jackman. The same thing would happen if Hugh Jackman was laying on you, I guarantee it. Is there a certain situation you could never imagine yourself doing, specifically on TV? We’ve seen you give yourself an enema, one of my favorite clips of all time by the way…

Bear: What I’ve learned is that other people’s favorite clips are low points in my life.

MC: A man gives himself an enema on television on a raft, what are we suppose to do but love it?

Bear: I remember doing a bit the other day. I was half way up a rock face and had diarrhea. I’m trying to sort of get off of this rock, and I realized it was all about to happen. I had to just say to the camera man ‘Listen, turn the camera off, I’ve got to go. Now.’ I was hanging there with my hands, had one toe on the face beneath me, and I’m trying to get my trousers down.  And there’s just diarrhea in free air. I look up and see this red light blinking and he’s like ‘You’ve got to be joking, this is great!’ You think that would never get on TV, but it does. You think ‘Is nothing sacred any longer?!’

MC: I definitely look forward to that. I think most people would. That would have been a great deleted scene from Mission Impossible 2, when Tom Cruise was suspended from the rocks…

Bear: That would have really been a good one, yah. Somehow I don’t see it, though.

MC: I don’t think Tom Cruise has ever had diarrhea in his life.

Bear: That’s probably why he’s successful and I’m back in the jungle swamp.

MC: Yah, as long as you’re diarrheaing on camera, you’ll never reach Tom Cruise levels of fame. They have it in their riders: ‘No diarrhea.’ Is there something you would rather kill yourself than do?

Bear: I went and took [wife] Shara shopping for a dress today.  She’s been wanting to do this for ages.  She was trying on all these dresses, and it was like kryptonite to Superman. I could feel the strength and energy depleting from my body, and I wasn’t doing anything, I was just sitting there! I could hardly stand it, I was so exhausted.

MC: Diarrhea in the dressing room next time to kick the energy up, if you really want to make it fun.

Bear: You’re right. But we got her a nice dress, she was happy.

MC: You live on a houseboat, is that right? Or were your children just born on a houseboat?

Bear: We live in a houseboat, and then we have a little island off the west coast. A little 20 acre island with one little house and a little light house on it. No electricity or water, you just let rain wash off the roof. It’s a really lovely, cozy hideaway.  So we’re between there and the houseboat.

MC: And your wife is cool with all of that?  She’s into the rainwater, the whole thing?

Bear: Well she’s made them both really homey and really cozy. They’re just wild places, but they’re really cozy, lovely, nice homes.

MC: I’m sure you heard last week there was a possible bomb scare in Times Square here in New York. I work in the building right above where they found the SUV full of explosives. You’re a survivalist on a show called Worst Case Scenario. God forbid a bomb goes off, do you have any advice for the people of New York? What could we do to stay safe?

Bear: Listen to the news. Don’t panic. I guess it depends how close you are, just don’t go and investigate. A lot of the problems are people often getting inquisitive. They see a large explosion down the street and start trying to go have a look at it. You’re best off, unless you’re directly there, stay and listen to the news and do as advised.

We did a Worst Case Scenario this first season of the show, one of an earthquake, one of a blackout and scenarios of terrorist stuff. A building collapsing, or being caught in a black out… They’re pretty frightening. They set up these scenarios where I’m deep underground and I had to try and work out how the hell to get out of this place. It’s pitch black, there’s guys getting knocked unconscious, there’s rubble everywhere and a building collapsing and gas leaks, electricity surging and burst pipes with water… I definitely finished filming all these scenarios thinking ‘Man, I thought I’d only get this on Man vs. Wild.  It’s stuff that I love and it’s the same skills that I use on Man vs. Wild. It’s the same resourcefulness and thinking decisively, then acting with confidence once you come up with a plan. The same rules apply whether you’re in a jungle or whether you’re in an urban setting with a disaster or a terrorist attack. So I think people will relate to these new shows a lot hopefully.

MC: What kind of things can we look forward to this season on Worst Case Scenario?

Bear: We’ve done everything from your car breaks fail at the top of a mountain, to being mugged, to chemical spills, to dog attack, to earthquakes, to blackouts, to ski accidents, to mountain biking accidents…

MC: How does someone break into being a survivalist professionally?

Bear: I don’t know, I don’t think mine was a taken path. I never wanted to do TV. I just did what I was trained to do through the Special Forces, and I’ve been doing that from a very young age. Then Discovery came to me and said ‘Listen, we know your background, can we do a show where we drop you in some difficult places?’ I resisted it about three times. I said ‘Look, I don’t want to do TV.’ But the more I said that, the more they said ‘Well, that’s what we want.’

MC: Were there any close calls on Worst Case Scenario where things got a little too intense? Or was it pretty much what you were expecting?

Bear: I’ve learned to try and minimize close calls. If there are close calls, I’m doing my job wrong. But I’ve also developed a good instinct about where that danger comes from and how to manage that. I see things often happening in slow motion in front of me when it’s all going wrong.

There’s one episode where I’m trying to get out of a building while something catastrophic is happening to it, I just don’t know what. Everything is blowing up and I’m trapped in this thing on the top floor. So I find an old fire hose and I’m lowering myself out the outside of this building and I think I’ve done it, when literally all the top floors of the windows blow out, takes the firehouse with it, and I end up falling 10 stories smack into an air bag that’s been set up on the bottom.

Look, sometimes, no matter how hard you try, sometimes you need a bit of luck. And that was one of the ones that went wrong. I think we end the series on that one, because it’s a nice way to end it, showing that it doesn’t always work out as planned.  You don’t always win, but you’ve got to keep trying, and these are the things that will help you.

Giant bear hug of a thanks to Bear Grylls for a great interview! Check out the above-mentioned clip of Bear surviving an Earthquake.  Some very handy (and terrifying) advice:

Stephen Baldwin In Cosmo

Wow. Cosmo UK has some naked dude centerfolds in their latest issue. Most notably, Stephen Baldwin. This is all very sudden. My attraction to him is as surprising as it is intense. (Very).

That below-the-navel area is like a magnet for the eyes. Less intense attractions from the spread include Nigel Barker and Doug Reinhardt. Barker loses because he’s posing with his wife. Not sexy, in that he is explicitly saying that I will never be with him. How dare he. Reinhardt loses because of a combination of a spiky hair situation and this lame quote:

I can be quite romantic. For my girlfriend’s birthday I made her pancakes and took them to her in bed.

Real original, Reinhardt. Also, real romantic. That’s what you do for Mother’s Day, not for your girlfriend’s birthday. Because I’m sure Paris Hilton really enjoyed those pancakes. Unless the pancakes were liberally sprinkled with diamonds and powdered sugar.

Thanks, DListed

Cardigans Singer Nina Persson Launches Capsule Collection High on Pregnancy Hormones

Cardigans lead singer Nina Persson might suggest trying to not get pregnant while creating your first fashion line. “It’s so typical that the launch happened right now. It was meant to have happened a few weeks ago, and I grew out of the clothes before we had the launch,” she said at the launch of her capsule collection with Swedish label HOPE at a party hosted by Project No. 8 (where the collection will be available exclusively, as well as at online retailer La Garçonne) at the Ace Hotel’s Liberty Hall. “This [dress] works. It’s pretty good maternity, and the only thing I can fit in still.” James Iha of Tinted Windows and the Smashing Pumpkins came by to wish the collection well, as did the Citizens Band, which played a set to close out the evening.

Persson performed a few songs herself, but spent most of the night showing off her collection of puff-sleeve dresses, mesh-trimmed skirts, and cardigans, naturally. Pregnancy wasn't about to slow her down. “This is almost like playing a regular show: You get really excited, the adrenaline pumping, and it’s really tough to wind down,” she said. “Today is one of the hardest days to not drink, actually. The good thing is that you’re pretty high on other weird hormones, so you get pretty excited anyway.”

Brave Fashion Blogger Sacrifices Self for Trends, Leering Ice-Cream Man

StyleList writer Lindsey Schickner understands the sacrifice involved in fashion. Sometimes it's the physical pain of an absurd shoe, and sometimes it's the psychological pain of a lamé dress that makes everyone feel like they have to diet as soon as they put it on. But other times, it's dignity. She set hers aside for a moment to try spring's diaper-shorts trend. She got herself a $725 Dolce & Gabbana sheer floral top and matching $650 high-waisted floral panty-shorts and strutted through her office and then onto the streets of the city.

She writes:

[M]y confidence took a dive faster than Michael Phelps at the Olympics.

The light was so bright on my completely exposed legs. I wanted to run back inside immediately...

"What the --- is she wearing?" slapped me back to the reality that I was strutting around in basically no bottoms -- including some co-workers who didn't recognize me! This was a chorus that was echoed regularly by strangers throughout the course of my hour-long experiment, along with cat calls from construction workers and yes, even the Good Humor man.

In Starbucks, one barista refused to look at me while another extolled the virtues of my outfit. "I like the material," he said of the silky bottoms. "It's almost like shorts. They will be good for summer."

And that is the problem with these bottoms. They're not shorts, they're underwear, and the only girl who could really be fine in them is the girl that enjoys inviting leers and catcalls. In considering this, maybe that's why designers brought bona fide bottoms back for fall, which is a conservative, minimalist season and a complete departure from spring. Most women only walk around in their underwear when no one else is around. Compulsory sluttiness just doesn't work.

LOST RECAP: Across The Sea Of Doubleyou Tee Eff

This is a Recap of Lost Season 6, Episode 15, entitled “Across The Sea”, originally airing May 11, 2010. It is full of spoilers about things I did not understand and spoiled explanations about why I did not understand them. So don’t read on if you DVRed me being confused, cause it’ll be ruined.

MOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE ISLAND STREET

We open on a shipwreck. Quickly, a survivor comes to the surface — Frank?? Ahh, crap, it’s just some ancient woman who probably didn’t deliver a calm one-liner when her ship exploded. She stumbles to the island, all kinds of super pregnant, and is briefly startled but soon taken in by the island’s lone resident, veteran character actress Allison “Juno’s Mom” Janney.

Turns out they’re speaking Latin, so we are flashing WAY the hell back, and the woman immediately goes into laborus majorus (the Latin phrase for “to kill grain”) and with the help of mysterious island mom, delivers her one and only baby, Jacob. But wait! Turns out, she wasn’t pregnant with one baby and also fat, but she was pregnant with twins! Who’s the other kid? Hurley? It’s Hurley, right? She delivers the mysterious afterthought and is like, “I don’t have a name for this dude, you want him? Actually wait, no, lemmie see him real quick.” Island woman glares at the two babies, and whoaboy, she’s feelin’ something (memories of Penny? Or something EEEEEVIILLLLLL???)

The island woman realizes that the opening titler is coming up, so she hurries up and smashes the mother with a rock, because cool! Shipwreck woman just learned Island Rule #1: Finders keepers, losers weepers! Island Rule #2: THERE ARE NO RULES!!! Island Rule #3: Ignore Rule #2, there are actually so many rules on the island, and you must impart them to the twins you just stole.

Also, the kids are symbolic as all hell:

After the jump, Jacob and Bro play a round of Rocks: The Game, the family breaks up, and the origin of the smoke monster is totally, clearly explained:

FAMILY DIES

Jacob and his unnamed brother are hanging out on the beach when unnamed bro — SIDENOTE: I realize it’s cool to keep the Man In Black’s name ambiguous, instead of coming out and calling him “Esau” or “The Devil” or “Blackula”, but that’s also sacrificing a bit of practical realism with the scene; clearly, the new mom would’ve named him at some point, and it’s a bit plotholey to just never have the name uttered in the scenes we’re allowed to see. But I digress — anyway, Blackula finds a board game where you move black and white stones around, and convinces Jacob to play even though they’re afraid their mom would take it from them because she hates games that are too symbolic to be enjoyable.

Jacob returns to his New Mom, spills the truth about the game, and she tells Man In Black he not only can keep it, but that he’s special and she intentionally left the game for him to find (sure beats their other favorite game, Throw The Sand). Jacob and Bro grow up living a normal happy childhood of chasing boars and being told the island is all that is, until they encounter other boar-hunting humans one day and demand that their mother tell them what their purpose on the island is. The Mom responds, “Ahhhh, geez, can I tell you 58 minutes into the episode?” Jacob’s brother’s like, “No, NOW”, and their Mom begrudgingly shows them something very special:

The Mom kinda rambles about how the light is the light inside all humans, but they must protect the light from humans at all costs, because they’d use it to build a theme park or something. The Boy In Black proclaims, “It’s beautiful.” Tim Roth isn’t quite sure:

More island days pass uneventfully, until the minor event of the twins’ murdered mother appearing to Man In Black Junior and telling him that she’s his real mother, she was murdered, and that he belongs with the people on the other side of the island if he wants to leave. Jacob’s brother is understandably skeptical, saying “I thought there weren’t other people, only us three, that one other dude, and boars.” His mom replies, “Oh were that so, but across the sea [titular!], there are MANY boars. Great golden ones, that put your island boars to shame!” Man In Black Junior is intrigued. His New Mom’s not gonna be happy about this…Or is she the smoke monster appearing to him as his former mother to manipulate him? Seems prettay likely.

Jacob’s brother tells Jacob the big news about the people — They have tents, Jacob! TENTS! — and Jacob reacts by beating the crap out of him (whoahoa, who’s the good brother now, dawg?). Their mom appears out of frickin’ nowhere (Smoke Monster? Or a really weird cut? A MAGIC cut??) and breaks up the fight, but Jacob’s brother has had enough and declares “I’m leaving you, mom!” and runs up into his room to listen to Egyptian Nirvana. Jacob stays by his mother’s side, because he’s a little lame.

First the mom leaves the board game for Jacob’s bro, then a ghost appears to him and convinces him to leave? Looks like the mother might be weaving more than just thread! She’s weaving LIVES.

MOMICIDE, PART TWO

The years pass and Jacob & Man In Black grow into their regular actors, and while meeting up for their weekly game of Rockmoverz, Man In Black declares that he’s discovered a way to leave the island by digging to the pocket of light and turning a wheel near it. Jacob is surprised, saying “Mom told us there was no way to leave, but that plan sounds airtight.”

The mom approaches Man In Black in his island-leaving area, gets him to explain his plan to leave, and suspiciously admits “I guess this means goodbye…” and hugs him. Having watched Lost for six seasons, we know that “I guess this means goodbye…” [HUG] doesn’t actually mean “I guess this means goodbye…” [HUG]. What it actually means is, I’m pushing you into the wall, knocking you unconscious, murdering all the people you were living with (presumably as the smoke monster, not just by, like, punching them), and scuttling the escape well you worked so hard to dig. Parents just don’t understand. OR MAYBE THEY SUPER UNDERSTAND!

We are beginning to finally understand the Man In Black’s motives, just as my tv’s passive aggressive viewing guide predicted:

The mom takes Jacob back to the island light and tells him that he has to pound a shot to become the new immortal light guardy person. Jacob responds by whining that he doesn’t want the responsibility because the mom loved his brother more and is only asking him to take over because the brother won’t — maybe Jack will make a great Jacob after all — but the mom answers that “It was always you, I see that now.” She also tells him never to go into the light, because it’s “worse than death.” Jacob answers, “What is it, the dialogue in V? That joke’ll make sense in a million years.”

When Man In Black returns to his people, he sees the dead bodies and reacts in horror, “OH MY GOD, my board game was kind of knocked over! THAT’S IT, I’m stabbing my fake mom in the back.” He proceeds to stab his fake mom in the back, and before her final breath, she manages to tell Man In Black that she can’t let him leave because she loves him, and thanks him. But for what? Perhaps for unknowingly accepting the real island-guarding responsibility, as the smoke monster? Or for releasing her from her responsibility, because she can’t die or kill herself? Knowing how Lost works, it’s a pretty safe bet that the mom saw this coming from 90 trillion B.C. away and made it all happen.

Jacob then angrily gets revenge on his brother, smashing his face into rocks and floating him into the “worse than death” light. Then, finally, the origin of the Smoke Monster is explained:

So THAT’s it! Figures.

The episode concludes with Jacob burying his brother and pseudo-mother side by side, along with the white and black rocks from the board game, and the show cuts back to Season 1 footage of Jack discovering the “Adam and Eve” skeletons so the producers can prove to us they knew where the show was headed from day one. Then the show flashes back to the Season 1 part where the Smoke Monster reflects peoples’ theoretical lives instead of being a physical column of smoke that grabs people and throws them around, and totally explains that too. Or maybe it doesn’t do that at all. Nice try, Lost — I can accept the fact that you’re never gonna tie up all your loose ends, but not if you’re gonna pompously rub our faces in it the one time you actually do answer one thing.

Next week, Lost explains where that paralyzing spider venom came from, followed by ten minutes of the producers high-fiving and dancing to this.

LOSTDS AND ENDS

– So, the light. It’s not necessarily “goodness”. Perhaps it’s a Pandora’s Box sort of deal, encompassing all of evil and the desires of mankind, but appearing as a nice-looking light to tempt the brothers. How’d it turn Bro in Black into the smoke monster? I guess it’s a little like the chaos from Pandora’s Box being released? There was a smoke monster in that story, right? I thumbed it.

– I’m guessing (and could be hyper-wrong) that the mother was the smoke monster the whole time, using her smoke monster powers to appear as the twins’ natural mother then again to kill the mortals on the island, and that was the true responsibility she passed down, going to the more worthy son who she loved more all along. Not sure where this leaves Jacob’s responsibility, or how it impacts the orders Richard and the Others were receiving from who they believed was Jacob. Is Man In Black the island’s real guardian? He’s motivated by a lot more than just blind evil, but can he actually leave the island? Something about immortal smoke monster boarding a physical vehicle and flying to, like, Cabo seems like it won’t happen.

– It was interesting that the mother kept talking about how humans are selfish and manipulative and must be kept from the light, and yet, she only managed to protect the light through murder and manipulation. If the immortal islanders are indeed gods in some way, they’re acting a lot like selfish Greek/Roman gods rather than all-knowing, can’t understand their motives Abrahamic gods. Though granted, we still don’t really understand their motives. But I could see Jacob’s mom banging a mortal then changing her into a cow to hide her.

– I’m sure we all caught the mother’s line in the opening scene, “Every question I answer will only lead to another question.” The producers nodded so hard to the audience there, they’re all in neck braces this morning.

– Also, while “Across The Sea” wasn’t the most exciting episode in the world and it actually took me until my post-Lost conversations this morning to really come around on it about, can we credit the show’s ambition to have the third to last episode in the entire series include NONE of the show’s main characters? What other series would attempt this? So crazy, it just might LOST.

– Next week on Lost, “The End” by The Doors plays. So, it’ll be an iconic and well-regarded episode that goes on forever until your high school self finally gains the courage to skip it and listen to the “Break On Through” episode again.

“Across The Sea” episode thoughts? Smoke Monster / crazy light theories? Mom theories? Questions? Problems? Like the episode? Only TWO EPISODES LEFT, so you’re running out of time to declare “I’m done with this show.” Leave ‘em all in the comments.

Ida Sjöstedt’s Unconventional Glamour

When compiling ideas for her spring 2010 "Wonderland" collection, Swedish designer Ida Sjöstedt decided to adopt a Gaga-esque philosophy: the "too much is never enough approach," as she puts it. The collection's offbeat frills, splashy florals, and glitter were inspired by both fairy-tale flounces and colorful club getups. For fall, she perused the drawings of horror illustrator Hans Arnolds, creating a darkly chic collection of brocade detailing, fur, and frothy black and nude lace. Though Sjöstedt's designs draw from an eclectic range of influences each season, her overall aesthetic remains the same. "I'm doing glamour with a tongue-in-cheek approach," she says. "It's always playful and fun while still carrying a certain elegance." On the runway, that means pairing Elizabethan elements with glitzy tulle or a fur capelet with metallic tights.

Sjöstedt studied fashion at London's University of Westminster and launched her eponymous label in 2001, just a year after graduating. The well-received collection was immediately picked up by stores in Stockholm and Japan, and she's shown her designs at Stockholm Fashion Week ever since. More recently, Sjöstedt has been delving into the local music scene as well: She's dressing Swedish pop export Agnes and RedOne's new girl-band Love Generation on their tours this summer. Her designs are stocked at Pixie Market and Foravi. Click ahead to see more from the spring and fall collections.

Sex and the City 2 Theme Song: Love Is Your Snoooooze

The Sex and the City 2 theme song, sung by Leona Lewis and Jennifer Hudson, has been released online. And let me tell you. Love is a color, not just an emotion. And it makes you shine. Everything else is just black and white. So I learned that. Now, I’m no Sex and The Big City Doctor, but this song is booooooooooooring. I imagine it playing over a montage at the end of the movie with all of the characters slowing make gentle love to themselves in their separate, enormous apartments, having finally come to the realization that no one will ever care about them more than they do. Except for maybe my gay friend Seth.

Christine Staub: New Jersey’s First Supermodel

Very little good comes out of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, as both me and my mother can attest. But in a surprising twist this season, it seems that something associated with Danielle Staub doesn’t have “Prostitution Whore” written all over it. And that something is Danielle’s own daughter Christine Staub, a tall, lanky, gorgeous young woman who has clearly done everything within her power to be the complete opposite of her very own mother.

And while most of The Real Housewife children have dreams way beyond their actual potential thanks to a potent combination of being spoiled, thinking they are better than the world knows they actually are, and being completely and utterly useless, Christine seems to have serious potential as a major supermodel. 5′10″ with a 26 inch waist and a beautiful face hath a successful model makes. (Right? Tell me it isn’t thinner…) And as pointed out in this week’s recap, her resemblance to actress Mariel Hemingway at least guarantees her a fleeting on-screen romance with Woody Allen (major score in our books).

We’ve put together various images of Christine via her IMG Modeling page and other photo resources, which we bring to you in the below gallery. And yes, we’re trying to figure out who the father is. Andy Cohen best have a big reveal planned in the reunion show, because really, how did this child get made?

Open Thread: Movies You Want To Hate Eff

This past weekend Michelle Collins sent me a text that read, “Was going to go out last night but The Holiday was on. You know the rest.” I do, I do, Michelle. I know that I hate that movie, but if I saw it on TV, I would stay in and watch it too. Is it Jude Law’s abnormally tanned face even though it’s winter in England?  Is it that I hope Kate Winslet will somehow sleep with the old man instead of Jack Black? I don’t know. Some movies are equal parts compelling and repelling so that you end up in a viewing Purgatory, stuck on your couch, loving and hating, hating and loving. An emotional rollar coaster of a movie experience. And you’ll always go back to it. The number one movie that I want to hate eff is The Sweetest Thing, starring Cameron Diaz, Selma Blair and Christina Applegate. God, I hate that movie. It’s basically trying to prove that women can be funny, raunchy and sexy via, among other things, the old “mouth getting stuck on the penis piercing during a blowjob and then the cops have to come help out” scenario. That old trope. It also makes no sense, plot-wise. And Tom Jane, as the leading man, is somehow unattractive in it. I would have thought that to be literally impossible. It’s also the height of Cameron Diaz’s dancing phase, if such a thing can be measured. AND I WATCH IT EVERY TIME ANYWAY. I DON’T KNOW WHY. It can’t just be the presence of Jason Bateman. Anyway. Here’s the trailer:

Fun fact, our own Dan Hopper claims that a relationship of his ended because his lady friend made him watch The Sweetest Thing, claiming it was exactly like her and her friends. Things were never the same with them afterwards.

So! I’d like to know what movie you’d like to hate eff! So hard. Leave your answers in the comments, obvi.

In Honor Of Betty White Week: The Golden Girls Credits The Way They Should Have Been

I don’t know if you’ve ever just been sitting around in your sweatpants looking at the Pepperidge Farm Wikipedia page, but I know that I have and it pretty much ruined my life. I just wanted to see how many different kinds of Milanos there were, but then things took a nasty turn when I saw this sentence right there in the middle of the Wikipedia entry:

“In an episode of The Golden Girls, Sophia complained about the high price of Pepperidge Farm cookies and said not to buy them with her money.”

And then my automatic response was to go, “Oh yeah! The Golden Girls!” So that’s how I ended up on the Golden Girls Wikipedia Page. And by the time I was done reading that page, there was no turning back. Because this happened:

“The theme song is “Thank You for Being a Friend”, which was a #25 Pop hit for Andrew Gold in 1978. The show’s version is a cover sung by Cynthia Fee.”

Whaaaaaaaat? That’s a real song? The theme for the Golden Girls is a cover of a whole real song that was written and sung by a guy who was apparently kind of somewhat famous? Yes. And that’s what blew my mind. So obviously I bought the Andrew Gold version on iTunes, and guess what? There’s a f**king verse in the real song about being old. But that’s not the verse they use for the show. Why would that not be the verse they use for the only television show in the history of the world to be about only old people? Instead they use the first verse about throwing a party with everyone you know. It’s a show about old people and instead of singing about being old they’re singing about buying a giant gift. Here, look.

So I got mad. And I got crazy. I got mad and I got crazy and I decided that I had to put the original verse about being old into the opening credits to the Golden Girls. This sounds like it’s not a big deal, but it’s a huge deal. The verse about being old is the third verse, but I still needed the beginning of the song for the beginning of the song. So I had to teach myself to edit audio (teaching myself = IMing my friend Matt James a whole bunch of times). And then at the end of the Golden Girls version it’s like “ba ba ba ba ba ba ba,” but that never actually happens in the real version. In the real version that last “ba” is like an octave lower and isn’t even the last “ba”! It goes into all these other “ba”s that finally end with a “ba” of the correct note. So I had to switch all those “ba”s around. And I don’t know how to do that s**t, so it took me three days to finish. AND IT’S NOTHING! It’s just the Golden Girls opening credits with a dude singing and different words that are about being old. Enjoy.

Yet no sane novelist wants to inflict that much discomfort on the audience."
