News: Stock Markets News | 11 May 2010 | 4:08 pm The Tuesday Podcast: Athens And The Bond Kings Of Newport Beach When money was cheap, Paul Emmanuelides borrowed millions to build his brewery.(NPR/Chana Joffe-Walt) In Athens, everybody has a story about how easy it was to borrow money after Greece joined the euro and interest rates plummeted. On today's Planet Money, Chana Joffe-Walt brings back a few of those tales. Her cab driver upgraded from a Toyota to a Mercedes. Paul Emmanuelides, who owned a couple bars, borrowed 7 million euros to build an industrial brewery. People borrowed money to go on vacation -- then refinanced the loans. "It was like manna from heaven," one lady says. Where did all the money come from? A lot of it came from Newport Beach, home of the giant bond fund Pimco. Adam Davidson was there last week, and he spoke with Mohamed El-Erian, Pimco's CEO. The firm sold all of its Greek bonds last year. Since then, El-Erian says, Greece has tried to interest the firm in some of its newly issued debt: The Greek government came with lots of offerings. ... They said, "We are issuing five, seven billion, lots of people are participating, look how attractive these bonds are." ... We said, "Thank you very much, we appreciate it, but our analysis shows that sovereign risk is an issue." In other words, Pimco's still worried that the country won't be able to pay back all the money it's borrowed. Download the podcast, or subscribe. Music: The Black Keys' "Tighten Up." Source: Dealbreaker | 11 May 2010 | 1:23 pm Not Everybody In Germany Is Cool With The Bailout Bild via Business Insider By Jacob Goldstein Bild, a popular German tabloid, ran the banner image up there on its English-language home page today. The "lion's share of that cash -- up to 123 billion -- is coming from Germany," the paper said. "If it is not paid back, the taxpayer will be left out of pocket. Just like with the Greek bailout!" Just to be clear, the bailout announced this week is a basically a line of credit, and nobody has borrowed against it yet. Still, now that yesterday's honeymoon is over, markets don't seem so psyched about the bailout either. Banks in Europe are still very nervous about lending money to each other. Insurance that pays off if European banks default on their debts is still relatively expensive. And the euro is still cheap. Inevitably, the news of the bailout has been followed by talk of moral hazard -- the notion that people and institutions who are protected against bad outcomes from risky behavior may be more likely to take big risks. All the big corporate bailouts during the financial crisis made this a big worry in the U.S. Now that the EU seems to be saying that euro-zone countries are also too big to fail, countries may be more likely to throw fiscal caution to the wind and spend their way into bailouts. EU officials are aware of the risk, and they're trying to figure out how to manage it. One possibility: Force euro-zone countries to give up some control over national budgets. Under a proposal described by the WSJ, euro-zone members would review nations' budgets before they go to national parliaments. If a super-majority of euro-zone members votes against the proposed budget, it would be rejected, and the national parliament wouldn't get to vote on it. » E-Mail This » Add to Del.icio.us Source: NPR Blogs: Planet Money | 11 May 2010 | 1:04 pm Dick Grasso Discusses May 6 Stock Plunge: First Word SpecialSource: Bloomberg - All Podcasts | 11 May 2010 | 12:58 pm MetroPCS Raised to `Buy,' MELA Sciences Cut to `Hold': AudioSource: Bloomberg - All Podcasts | 11 May 2010 | 12:57 pm BoNY Mellon unit charged with fraudThe New York attorney-general’s office has charged a Bank of New York Mellon subsidiary with fraud, saying it deliberately misled clients about investments tied to Bernard Madoff to protect its fee incomeSource: Financial Times - US homepage | 11 May 2010 | 12:56 pm Trust in poor communities builds profitsIn the developing world, the key innovation for marketing soda can be as simple as letting customers grab their own bottle. Miss America contestants have officially lost their innocence, thanks to a racy photo shoot in which they look…well, you can see for yourself here. The Miss USA pageant, co-owned by NBC and Donald Trump, was looking for more attention. They got it. MSNBC has more: This year, all 51 Miss USA contestants have posed for their official photos wearing seductive expressions on their faces and not a whole lot else on their bodies. Taken by fashion photographer Fadil Berisha in dramatic black-and-white, the shots feature racy lingerie, smoldering looks and plenty of bare skin. The photos seemed designed to generate controversy and buzz about the pageant, TODAY’s Matt Lauer suggested to pageant president Paula Shugart. “Yes, to some degree it’s marketing,” Shugart admitted from Las Vegas. “But we’ve always been the cutting-edge pageant. We are owned by Donald Trump. “It pushed their envelope, but they all enjoyed doing this,” Shugart added of the contestants. Besides, she told Lauer, the women in the pageant are not looking to bring peace to the world. They are all aspiring actresses and models. “Their dream is to be in the Victoria’s Secret fashion show,” Shugart said, and the “Waking Up in Vegas” shots are good practice. Lark-Marie Anton, a pageant spokeswoman, also weighed in via e-mail, telling NBC News: “We are in the business of beauty and the contestants who compete for the title of Miss USA are not afraid to be sexy. These ladies are the full package — smart, accomplished, relevant and sexy. That said, I think these photos definitely break the stereotype of what a ‘pageant girl’ looks like.” Does the Miss USA photo shoot go too far? Of course it does; that’s why everyone is paying attention. Thanks to America’s Puritanical tendencies, this stuff continues to shock and draw eyeballs–and profit its owners. I wish the little girls enamored with Miss USA weren’t forced to have escorts as their role models. This kind of media activities benefits business, but contributes to a culture of girls and women with low self-esteem, eating disorders, and the inability to differentiate between sexiness and promiscuity. This self-delusion, in turn, creates a reliance on industry for cures. There’s a lot of talk about sustainability in business today. But the tendency to create self-cannibalizing women has been largely overlooked in those efforts. Donald Trump just added another sliver of misconception to the female pie. If you want to do Trump a favor, watch Miss USA. If you want to do your little girls a favor, turn it off. Source: Business Pundit | 11 May 2010 | 9:40 am iPhone, Android Can Now Scan Credit CardsSquare, a mobile credit card scanner created by Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, is now available for iPhone, Droid, and iPod Touch (it was initially designed for the iPad). Mashable has more: So far, without the card reader, the app was quite useless. This, however, is about to change. As Jack Dorsey writes on the Square blog: “Today, in addition to releasing clients for the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Android devices, we are opening up our first cut at activating card processing and pricing, and sending out our first production batch of free card readers. All represent just the beginning of what Square is striving to become: a simple payment utility for everyone.” It is however still too early to judge the success of Square. As Dorsey himself admits, opening a merchant account to accept payment cards proved to be a difficult task, and the app development has taken much longer than expected. And when (and if) all obstacles are overcome, there’s still the question of whether people will actually use the application. Dorsey is on a roll. Twitter just opened a new business center. If this catches on, business could feasibly be run only on mobile devices. Source: Business Pundit | 11 May 2010 | 8:57 am Symbol Of The Day: Auto Parts Factory Demolished To Make Room For CasinoBy Jacob Goldstein Virtue's nice and all, but it doesn't pay the bills. So broke states are turning to vice, this morning's WSJ reports. Ohio voters, for example, recently decided to allow casinos in their state. In Columbus, a closed Delphi auto-parts plant was knocked down last week to build a new casino. In the past couple years, a dozen states have expanded legalized gambling or considered doing so. A similar number have eased blue laws limiting liquor sales. And several states are considering bills that would legalize and tax the sale of marijuana, the WSJ says. There's a long history of governments looking to vice when times are tough. The federal government legalized betting on horse races during the depression. Prohibition was repealed in 1933, in part because of the need for tax revenue and the high cost of law enforcement. Ohio has a budget shortfall of more than $3 billion. That was enough to sway the state's governor, Ted Strickland, who previously called gambling a regressive tax on the poor. "If I had not been confronted with these difficult circumstances, I would have obviously opposed expanding gambling in Ohio," he told the WSJ. » E-Mail This » Add to Del.icio.us Source: NPR Blogs: Planet Money | 11 May 2010 | 7:51 am Lenhoff on U.K. Elections, Ladwa on Stocks: First WordSource: Bloomberg - All Podcasts | 11 May 2010 | 7:42 am Falling Chinese Auto Sales Affecting Palladium ETFs: AudioSource: Bloomberg - All Podcasts | 11 May 2010 | 7:31 am Android Outsells iPhoneBy Jacob Goldstein It feels like the world is still in the grip of iPhonemania. But maybe not: Phones running Google's Android operating system outsold the iPhone in the first quarter of this year. What's more, BlackBerry phones outsold both iPhones and phones running Android. BlackBerry phones, which run an operating system from Research In Motion, had 36 percent market share, according to NPD group, a research company. Android phones (including the widely advertised Droid) had a 28 percent share. And iPhones, which run Apple's own operating system, had a 21 percent share. It was the first time Android phones outsold iPhones. That helped Verizon -- which sells the Droid but not the iPhone -- become more of a player in the smartphone business, Bloomberg News notes. More action in the segment is likely in the relatively near future. HP just spent $1.2 billion to buy Palm, which has been lagging. Dell is going to start selling an Android phone. And Microsoft is expected to release a new mobile operating system later this year, Bloomberg says. » E-Mail This » Add to Del.icio.us Source: NPR Blogs: Planet Money | 11 May 2010 | 7:15 am 21st Century Pearly Gates
