Makers of Singh Is Kinng embroiled in lawsuit

Vipul Shah Akshay Kumar, the superstar of Bollywood has his own stake when it comes to controversies, and now much after his film Singh Is Kinng has released, comes another lawsuit dragging the makers' in. The case in question has been filed by the American Rights management committee, saying that the film Singh Is Kinng has been derived from the 1929 short story Madame La Gimp by Damon Runyon. Talking about the issue, producer Vipul Shah told Bollywood Hungama, "Yes, I have heard of the lawsuit filed against the film, however, I have watched A Pocketfull of Miracle, another film that is based on Madame La Gimp and don't see any relevance between the two. Furthermore, the script and story of the film have been written by Anees Bazmee, currently shooting in Canada. Once he is back, we will sit on this topic and see what course of action is best taken. Till then it will be with our legal department."

Vidhu Vinod Chopra slams legal notice on makers of The 4th Idiot

Vidhu Vinod Chopra Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 3 Idiots may have raked in a lot of moolah for the maverick filmmaker but the film did face its share of controversies. First it was author Chetan Bhagat who accused the makers of not giving him enough credit for the storyline. While that issue died its own death in due course of time, now the makers seem to have another controversy to take care of. Apparently, Biswaroop Roy Chowdhury (who deals with memory enhancement techniques) has gone ahead and made a 35 minute animation film called The 4th Idiot. The movie starts where 3 Idiots ends i.e. at Phunsuk Wangdu's school and tells the story of a young boy Pappu who achieves his many dreams using the techniques taught by Rancho in 3 Idiots. What's even more surprising is that Omi Vaidya, who was seen as Chatur Ramalingam in 3 Idiots, has given his voice-over for this animated film. The 4th Idiot was to be screened for students at the World Unity Convention Centre in Lucknow recently. However, the makers seem to be in a soup now as Vidhu Vinod Chopra Productions have taken legal action against them Vidhu Vinod Chopra is furious with the makers of this film for using a similar title, story idea and setting in their film. He has even slapped a law-suit on producer-director Biswarop Roy Chowdhury for copyright violation. Chopra is now awaiting the verdict on this case.

Arjun Rampal's 'bald' look for Ra. One

Arjun Rampal He has played a myriad of characters through his career in Bollywood, however he is best suited for the darker characters he plays, and he is doing just that in Ra.One. The film starring the King of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan, will have Arjun playing the bad guy. But for this role, the model turned actor had to undergo a styling change. The actor was spotted wearing a cap at the Raajneeti press conference on Saturday. Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpai Apparently, is it said that Arjun will be sporting a bald look in the film with a temporary tattoo on his neck. Giving a hint about his latest look was the man himself on twitter saying, "Feeling light headed...no pun intended..thanks to the director producer...can't give out too much. Sounds random, but then u need access. 1" We guess bald is the new beautiful for this Bollywood hunk known for his mane.

"Characters of Raajneeti resembled to warriors from Mahabharata" - Prakash Jha

Prakash Jha It is and has always been a reminder to the rest of the world that Indian politics - seen here as the fast track to wealth - is a no-holds-barred affair. The problems are many. It's a self-perpetuating cycle of corruption that has carried over since the days of the British Raj and beyond. But then again we question ourselves - What is politics? It's the question which has no answer because it was never a question. Politics has become a part of our daily life. It has infiltrated our minds to such an extent that anything we do or have done seems all politically correct because the two pillars of political correctness are: Intractable ignorance and a steadfast refusal to face the truth. So what is politics then, I repeat. The answer is loud and clear: It is 'Money' which is soon followed by 'Power', then 'Corruption'. It's all that we need to stay alive today. But as the famous Will Rogers quotes, "Politics has become so expensive that it takes a lot of money even to be defeated." UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent presents you a special two part conversation with the man behind an epic called Raajneeti, a politician who isn't actively involved in politics, but is more active and awake than any other politician - Prakash Jha, the director who is going to take us on a journey where love, passion, power, corruption and betrayal is what it takes to become a true politician. Humane, isn't it? Politics - A part of us It is a natural part of any man's life. Throughout the day, the month, the year, the life, you're constantly negotiating. You create choices and pick up what is good for you, and in that, the consideration for others are always sidelined. That is how I am dealing with politics or you may say, Raajneeti, in my film. I am not going into the intricacies of democracy which I think is quite a farce. In our country, once you have pressed the button of the EVM, democracy ceases to operate. I consider the relationship between a husband and wife & father and child political. The media has been constantly saying that Raajneeti characters are inspired from the Mahabharata. I'd say 'No' Mahabharata - The old politics The media has been constantly saying that Raajneeti characters are inspired from the Mahabharata. I'd say 'No'. It's not us choosing the characters; it is the characters from the Mahabharata that chose us. When the first draft of the story in 2004 was ready, the idea was to try and understand the equations of democracy and share it in a fictional form. But when I started working on the characters, I realised that knowingly or unknowingly, the characters were gearing towards the characteristics of the Mahabharata characters. Then Anjum and I created a family and created a drama, just like the Mahabharata family. And the aim is the same - to gain power...but the question asked is - at what cost? Which is what the epic Mahabharata was all about. It's only in the end that you realise that the victory has made you lose everything. Prakash Jha Raajneeti - The awakening We are not intending to make a direct message oriented film. No. We have created a drama and eventually, there is a scene in the film where one of the protagonist, who has been forced to play politics and who later plays the darkest politics begs forgiveness from everybody he has hurt. Some do forgive, some do not and eventually he is the one who gives out a message - 'This is not politics. This is not what I intended to do.' But that apart, there are several issues that are beyond this film. Today I ask the question, "What have we achieved?" not only India but the rest of the world. You have such super powers like Russia turning democratic from the socialists. But what kind of democracy is this where Putin manipulates himself to become the P.M. In every which manner, it is the power and persistence to rule and your desire to be above all that makes a profession called politics. Prakash Jha - A political player I would like to clarify that I've never been an active political player. I've never been on a platform for any political party. I've never shared a platform of any political ideology. I've never spoken for or against any political party too. For me, politics means development, and that immediately translates into economic welfare. If you educate people, you need to create jobs for them. If you make roads, you need to create industries and businesses to gain revenue. If you make public investments, you have to make sure there is also a private investment happening. The wealth generation has to reciprocate the investment which is made. We take money from public and filter our own profits. Such is the cycle of corruption. If you look at a constituency in Bihar today, and you go ten kilometres from the district, you're back into the last century. There is not a single hospital in the entire North Bihar which can save the lives of the people. My NGOs and I have actively been investing and trying for the past seven years to create industries, health care centres and run hospitals. In fact, we have set up the first mega multiplex in Bihar which is to be commissioned in July. Nothing can go beyond the script, not even the performance Strong performers and performances Nothing can go beyond the script, not even the performance. The narrative is the power of the script. When you look at Arjun from Mahabharata, you never see him shouting, showing off, etc. He is very subtle and calm. Arjun is not like Bheem. Whereas, Bheem is in your face, aggressive and will take his 'gada' (the weapon he uses). Similarly, Duryodhan. Now if you look at it from Duryodhan's point of view, you do feel that he was denied his heritance. Mahabharata is a marvellous piece of work which has created every possible situation, incident, character, characteristics, etc. Look at them. Krishna, Karna, etc. What an epic! Prakash Jha The dialogues There are very interesting dialogues in Raajneeti. They had to be strong yet understood and yet political in nature. There is a scene in the film between Ajay Devgn (Karna) and Nana Patekar (Krishna) which is edited out of the film but I'll tell you anyway. Nana manoeuvres and manipulates Ajay's candidature from Azad Nagar. Very sarcastically, Ajay says, "Aap ne jo faisla liya hain, bilkul sahi liya hain." (What decisions you've taken are right) Nana replies to Ajay by saying, "Raajneeti mein faisle sahi ya galat nahin hote. Unka mol hai sirf maksad pane ka." (In politics, there is nothing as right or wrong. Politics is a way to achieve whatever however) There is also a dialogue from Ajay Devgn when he addresses one of the old aged guys, "Lok Tantra ka matlab yahi hota hai ki aap ko azaadi hoti hai ki aap apne upar attyachar karne wale ko khud apni marzi se chun sake." (Democracy means that you have the right to choose the corrupt politicians)

Akshay-Aishwarya to do a Rishi- Dimple, Amitabh-Jaya in Action Replayy

Akshay and Aishwarya are thrilled. They'll get to enact songs featuring their mother-in-law Dimple and father-in-law Amitabh, respectively. But composer Pritam Chakraborty is in a bit of a jam. Vipul Shah has decided at the last minute to re-record an entire complicated track for Action Replayy for a retro-song to be filmed on Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Akshay Kumar. And this is no ordinary request. The one all-comprehensive track will have to represent screen jodis as diverse as Raj Kapoor-Nargis, Rajesh Khanna -Mumtaz, Amitabh Bachchan-Jaya, Dharmendra-Hema Malini and Rishi Kapoor-Dimple Kapadia. The long-planned retro-song representing various eras of evergreen screen-jodis has now undergone a massive change. Every section of the song will now have differently mooded lyrics and tunes to go with the different looks that Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will don to represent screen pairs over the decades. Pritam had recorded a straightforward love song for the situation. That just won't do. The director has a far more ambitious tune-plan which Pritam has not quite understood as yet. Vipul who has just got Akshay and Aishwarya's dates in July to shoot the song in Manali, has asked his exceedingly-busy composer Pritam to scrap the song that he had recorded and create an entirely new composition that would aurally represent Akshay and Aishwarya's tribute to screen pairs over the years. Explains Vipul, "I feel it isn't enough to simply dress up Akshay and Aishwarya to represent the various screen pairs. Every section of the music, vocals and lyrics will represent the pair that we show Akshay and Aishwarya playing. For example if the mukhda is dedicated to Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz then I want the R.D. Burman feel of 'Jai Jai Shiv Shankar' in Aap Ki Kasam. On the other hand, if I want Akshay and Aishwarya to do a Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bachchan, I'd want Pritam to come with a suitable mood and tune, like R D. Burman's 'Bahon Mein Chale Aaon' in Anamika. If I show Akshay-Ash doing Raj-Nargis I want a Shankar-Jaikishan piece. If I show Akshay-Ash doing Dharmendra and Hema Malini then I want a Laxmikant-Pyarelal section in the composition. But if I want Akshay-Ash doing Shammi Kapoor-Sharmila Tagore then I want O.P. Nayyar to come into play." Just how Pritam would get all these diverse and seemingly-incompatible compositional style into one song is a mystery to the composer. But Vipul is confident. "Pritam is smart and he is talented. He will do it. Our film music is so rich. Not only are there composers as far-ranging as Madan Mohan and Shankar-Jaikishan, even the composer that you hear in one kind of cinema is different from what he does in another kind of cinema. How can we compare what R D. Burmam composed for Rajesh-Sharmila with what he composed for Rajesh -Mumtaz? I want all of this diversity to be part of that one song." Pritam who has already composed two full-on retro numbers for Action Replayy--a satire on marriage and an Elvis Presley styled rock 'n' roll track - has a month to rise to the occasion. The most ambitious retro song in the history of Indian cinema will be shot on July 12, 13, 14 and 15 in Manali.

Kites release delayed due to copyright issue?

Copyrights are still at a nascent stage in India, however, every now and then there are cases of infringement that come to light. This time round it's Rakesh Roshan's Kites that is caught in the copy right trouble. The film which is scheduled to release in next week has apparently run into troubled waters with the Bihar City Civil Court ordering a stay on the film till Roshan and Happy Hours Entertainment officials appear before the court on May 24. This order follows a case being filed by Laxmi Prasad of Sunbeam Holdings alleging non-receipt of amount due to them for selling the copy right of the action scenes amounting to approximately Rs 10 cr, to which the Rakesh Roshan had apparently agreed to pay approximately half the sum. However, sources close to the film's production have revealed that the film will be going ahead with their release on May 21, but have refused to comment on the progress of the case under the premise that the matter is still pending in court and that their legal division is working on resolving the matter.

"Any woman can fall in love with Hrithik Roshan" - Barbara Mori

Barbara Mori I am waiting for Barbara Mori in the lounge of the newly built serviced apartment somewhere in Juhu Versova area. It's velvety and dark. And I suddenly see the publicists of Kites running up and down to try and fix a big problem - None of the air conditions in the apartment were working due to some technical problems. There is something about Mori that makes me forget my manners. "Could you let Barbara know I'm ready to fan her?" I was serious. I mean, how often do you get a chance like this? Half an hour of waiting and fixing the problem, I was escorted into her private suite. When I enter, my eyes try to search for her but find her manager instead. Within thirty seconds, the mystic beauty arrives. When Barbara enters the room, she takes it. It crackles with her arrival. She is alone, no entourage, no assistant, and no publicist. Walking slightly oddly, taking tiny steps with her legs a little too close together; she sinks to the velvet beside me. "You look beautiful" I comment. "Thank you so much" is her cliché yet different reply. She asks her manager for a half cup of coffee. Draped in a white summer dress, Mori was comfort personified. There's sweetness to her embarrassment of walking into a room not knowing fluent English. But that is Barbara, she has no qualms. She's been doing rounds of interviews since morning with the Indian Press. And though we haven't yet, not yet, seen Barbara Mori in full swing in Kites, we do come to know from the promos that it is the gentleness she brought to it, the round-faced, sweetheart-lipped smile, and above all the conviction that she brings to an Indian film. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent meets the lustrous lady who makes you forget your marriage and mannerisms. Is it difficult to talk to Indian journalists? Not at all. I've been so confident and comfortable talking with all of them. You won't be any different; I'm sure (laughs). Yes, many of them have been writing things about my affair with Hrithik Roshan which isn't true news. That was bad. Will an Indian film help you in your career as an actress? Of course, absolutely. First of all, Kites is an amazing love story. Bollywood is the biggest film industry in the world. So, of course and obviously it will help my career reach new heights. Kites for me is world cinema. There was a time when nobody knew me in India. Today, I've got twitter fans from India writing to me. Barbara Mori Were you sure you wanted to do Kites the first time you were offered the film? No. I was not sure whether I'd be a part of Kites. Nobody pushed me to do Kites. When I met Rakesh and Anurag for the first time, we spent three to four hours talking about Kites. Here was Anurag telling me the story and I was asking him, "Do I have to dance in the film?" Anurag was like, "Yes, a little bit". I wasn't sure whether I'll be able to dance in a Bollywood film. So there lied my doubt. But after hearing Kites fully, I fell in love with this beautiful love story. I almost landed up crying after Anurag Basu completed the first narration. Can anybody fall in love with Hrithik Roshan from Mexico? Of course yes. He is a beautiful human being. He is sweet, a great actor and an even bigger heart. Any woman can fall in love with Hrithik Roshan. I almost landed up crying after Anurag Basu completed the first narration How many Indian films have you seen so far? I haven't seen any Bollywood film except Hrithik Roshan's films. But yes, I have seen Anurag's Life in a Metro. You remind me a lot of Penelope Cruz. Is English necessary to reach Hollywood? Because if it was, Penelope wouldn't have existed in L.A. Thank you for the compliment. I liked it. Maybe English is necessary to understand more than just talking. Yes, it is important to know what the other person is saying. Penelope has learnt to talk in English today but she isn't that fluent. I'm going in the same direction. I'm learning. Accent doesn't matter. Penelope has done a lot of good work and her success has not come because she knows the English language. Any Hollywood plans now? I'd love to work in Hollywood. I don't like Quentin Tarantino. But I'd like to work with Sean Penn and Woody Allen. I love Meryl Streep and she is the best ever actress in the world. I'd love to work with Meryl too. What about Shah Rukh Khan? I haven't seen Shah Rukh's acting. But yes, I'd love to work with him some day. I met Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri too at his house in Mannat. Suzanne told me that I had to meet them both because they are the best celebrity couple I'd ever meet. Barbara Mori And if you were to choose between the two - Hrithik Roshan or Shah Rukh Khan? I know Hrithik more than Shah Rukh. As people, both are really great. Both look smart and handsome. Do you think Hrithik Roshan can cross over to Hollywood? He has all that a great actor has to cross over to Hollywood. He has everything to go beyond. In fact, Kites will fly high in Hollywood. Do Mexican people watch a lot of Bollywood films? And will Kites be watched in your home town? Mexican people do not watch Bollywood films. I am promoting my film in Mexico too. On May 21, Kites is not releasing in Mexico. Kites is my biggest movie ever and I'd loved to have a red carpet premiere in Mexico. Rakesh, Hrithik, Anurag and my best friend Suzanne will have to come down to Mexico if my dream comes true. Hrithik has all that a great actor has to cross over to Hollywood Your toughest scene in the film Kites… My toughest scene from Kites will have to be the underwater sequence. I don't like sea. I don't like being in the water for a long time. We had to shoot underwater and so I took lessons on how to breathe and all. I did all the training. When I went down, I suddenly heard 'action'. I was informed that when the word 'action' is shouted, I had to start breathing. But I forgot to breathe, took off my oxygen mask and I swam really fast to come up from the underwater. I got very scared. Do you and Kangna share screen space? Yes, we have shared screen space but we did not interact too much. Tell us something about Anurag Basu which nobody knows. Anurag is a child. He is a mess, isn't he? But he has something in him that nobody has - He guided me so well throughout the film. He is a sweetheart. I'd love to work with Anurag Basu again. He is always smiling and laughing and made me laugh too throughout the making. I hope I can do more Bollywood movies.

Rahman, Resul to release their autobiographies

A R Rahman, Resul Pookutty It's almost official now. The startling musical journey of A R Rahman has now been chronicled by the maestro in an autobiography. In Tamil and English, Rahman's self-revelations to be published by Penguin will appear later this year after he finishes his current world tour and gets the time to put finishing touches to his startling tale, so far. The autobiography was apparently commissioned by Penguin right after the Oscar triumph. Both A R Rahman and sound designer Resul Pookutty who won Oscars for their work in Slumdog Millionaire were asked to put together their life stories, so far. While Resul acted swiftly making time in the midst of his various projects to pen down his tale Rahman, over-committed and unable to cope with his schedules, is somewhat behind schedule with his biography. Resul's autobiography in his native tongue Malayalam and in English is ready for release. While Rahman chooses to remain silent on his autobiography until closer to release, Resul confirms on behalf of both of them. Says Resul, "Both A R Rahman and I were asked to write our autobiographies after the Oscars. The Malayalam version of my autobiography entitled Sabdatharapadham (meaning, the sound of the Milky Way) is being released on May 13 in Mumbai. The English version will release a little later." Resul's co-partners in the Oscars victory Gulzar and Rahman would also be present. The book would be released by the Governor of Maharashtra K Sankaranarayan. Unfortunately, Resul's favourite entertainment icon Amitabh Bachchan won't be able to make it. "But Amitji will be releasing the English version of my book," assures Resul.
