The problem was gas hydrates, crystals that are lighter than water, which built up under the dome. The crystals were making the dome buoyant and they clogged the top of the dome, which would have stopped oil from being funneled. So BP was forced to set it down next to the leak and think about its next step. "I wouldn't say it has failed," says Doug Suttles, BP's chief operating officer. "What I would say is what we attempted to do last night wasn't successful." The company plans to take the next 48 hours to figure out what to do next. Meanwhile, the leak is spilling 5,000 gallons of oil a day into the ocean. Sigh.

Last month, for the first time, CSI: Miami fell behind Castle. Wednesday night's CSI: NY has been losing in demographics to Law and Order: SVU, and the original CSI , which airs on Thursdays, has been finishing third with the under-50 audience (gasp!). So how will CBS solve this new, perhaps predictable, problem? Variety thinks "some sort of sked shakeup seems inevitable when CBS rolls out its 2010 fall lineup next week." But why would CBS screw with what has clearly been a successful strategy, even if it's no longer the leader of the pack? One reason is the strength of the lead-ins. All three CSIs have strong lead-ins, and CBS may want to get new shows in those time slots to help build a new audience. Then there's the issue of competition. Instead of airing CSI: NY at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, after a weak lead-in from Criminal Minds, which tends to get decimated by American Idol, CBS may want to hold new episodes of that version and revive it mid-season. To be sure, the issues CBS is having with its CSI franchise are small ones. NBC would kill for a problem like this.

He lived in a normal house with a normal family and held down a normal job. But somewhere along the way that normalcy was disrupted, and Shahzad developed into a radical, would-be terrorist. The Daily News has details on what might have turned Shazad. According to "a source who was briefed on the investigation," Shazad was "slowly radicalized as events piled up — the war in Iraq, the war in Afghanistan, Muslim brothers being killed, innocent people being hit by drones from above." The paper also spoke with a neighbor who said Shazad got into an argument at a party last year about predator drones, yelling at a fellow reveler that, "They shouldn't be shooting people from the sky ... they should come down and fight." According to a family member of Shazad's, he wasn't religious when he moved to the U.S., "but he was when he came back." The Daily News also spoke with a former FBI profiler who said the evidence points toward Shazad being upset with his inability to achieve success in the U.S., which made him turn to terrorism. Last June things started falling apart. His home was foreclosed on and he quit his job. Then in the fall he traveled to Pakistan to get bomb training and returned in the U.S. in February with evil plans and an evil signature.

This didn't sit well with the play's other star, Kristin Chenoweth, who gave Setoodeh and Newsweek a keyboard-lashing to remember in the comment section. Chenoweth writes that she "was shocked on many levels to see Newsweek publishing Ramin Setoodeh’s horrendously homophobic 'Straight Jacket,' which argues that gay actors are simply unfit to play straight." She goes on to defend Hayes and Glee star Jonathan Groff, who Setoodeh also criticizes, and calls him out for his "knee-jerk homophobic reaction to gay actors." Then she delivers her zing paragraph:

The new guy is Carl Shepard, whom Gawker describes as "a former stripper, escort and adult actor." Shepard claims that he and Rekers hooked up in Chicago in 1992 after Rekers, who co-founded the right-wing Family Research Council, responded to an ad Shepard placed in Gay Chicago Magazine. In Gawker's interview with Shepard, which reads like a gay Penthouse letter, he says that Rekers summoned him to a hotel room asking for an "intimate massage." Once in the room, Shepard did exactly that, massaging a nude Rekers but never touching his nethers. "Looking back I think he thought that it wasn't gay," Shepard says.

Online (US) - Top Stories | 8 May 2010 | 7:00 am Party Down Recap: Orgy in Blue![]() Orgies rarely work out the way we intend them to. Especially catered orgies. That’s the takeaway from this week’s delightfully silly, profoundly dirty episode of Party Down. There were topless servers forced to carry trays of condoms and lube, a very complicated lesson on how to successfully deliver a body shot (as well as detailed demonstration of how not to do it), talk of a goldfish that sounds like a sheep, and more of guest-star Thomas Lennon’s bare ass than anyone outside of Mrs. Lennon could ever dream of. But mostly there were the familiar, low-key and charming character beats that (a) keep us raving about this gem of a show and (b) keep us forgetting how downright filthy some of its funniest jokes can be. This lacuna then causes us to encourage our parents to start watching, calling the show a “classic sitcom” in an “old-fashioned” style and thereby forgetting that neither Cheers nor The Cosby Show ever featured a “fuck room.” (Three’s Company, however, did.) Sorry, mom! In many ways, “Nick DiCintio’s Orgy Night” was a companion piece to last season’s beloved, blue “Sin Say Shun Awards Afterparty.” Only instead of surrounding our pink-tied friends with wildly uninhibited naked people, this time they were stuck with recently-divorced, free-spirited estate lawyer Nick and a whole bunch of confused yuppies wearing kitten masks. You see, it seems that just referencing Eyes Wide Shut on an invitation isn’t really enough to communicate what you have in mind. (“I thought it was like a mask party.” “What the fuck’s a mask party?!?”) Meanwhile, Henry and Casey are cute-sniping with each other while Ron is moping over his break-up with Mandy, boring the guests and freaking out over cheese. The perpetually sexually-frustrated Roman takes it upon himself to lubricate the party (sorry), telling Nick that while he’s never actually been to an orgy he has read a lot about them. “I’m a reader,” he deadpans in a way that’s not at all creepy. Kyle recognizes the above-mentioned shirtless condom-distributing girl even underneath her bird mask (he thinks maybe it’s an “ibis”) and makes the colossally clueless decision to both hit on her and brag about his recently released on DVD (only in Asia) movie Jumping Boys. Her withering put-downs and observations about their current station in life actually manage to pierce Kyle’s well-coiffed skull — they are both working at an orgy, for god’s sake! and not a particularly good one! — leading him into dangerous Ron territory, downing shots and questioning the meaning of it all. Luckily, in one of the episode’s best-played moments, Roman is there to drop his trademark wall of cynicism and comfort Kyle. Sort of. It’s a treat the way Martin Starr is able, through gritted-teeth, to insist that he thinks they’re all going to “make it,” even Kyle — without ever actually really saying he thinks Kyle is going to make it. What else? Well there’s some welcome Ron/Henry bonding, which finally lets us see the friendship these two supposedly had before catering, ill-conceived soup restaurants, corporate hierarchy, cheese, and massive pit-stains came between them. There are some funny telephone bits with Henry’s current girlfriend, the unseen Uta, whose unheard voice is not played by Kristen Bell but probably will be again before the season is over. But call us a broken record if you must, because our favorite bits this week were once again delivered by Megan Mullally, who continues to commit Grand Theft Sitcom as the chipper, off-kilter Lydia. Whether she’s offering people straws in case their mask-beaks get in the way, flirting with Nick by declaring estate law “my favorite law — what you just said,” performing some sort of vocal tic to Casey that is meant to imply sex (“Casey, men aren’t like us! To them sex is a big deal. Like sports. Or flags”), or just celebrating her divorce (“Free! Just me! Dyin’ alone!”) we are smitten. Party Down is just crazy consistent and crazy good at this point. Not even Thomas Lennon’s ass in full HD-glory can stop it. Although it might stop your mom. Just saying.
