She came, she saw and she 'proverbially' conquered! She is Gul Panag, the former Miss India, who, after carving a niche in Bollywood, has now been signed up by the famous Wockhardt Foundation for its advisory board.
According to Bollywood Hungama's confirmed sources, the role of Gul that has been etched by the company officials will have the pretty actress providing moral support for the 'upgradation' of the poor, weak and the hapless. Besides all of this, Gul will also be equally engaged in spreading the mission of the foundation through its 'Human Values and Social Awakening' initiatives.
Besides Gul, Bollywood personalities who are on the advisory board include the likes of Yash Chopra, Shyam Benegal, Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty amongst others.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 8 May 2010 | 6:52 am Book Review: Bollywood Themes
In the last couple of years, there have been quite a few books that have revolved around posters in Bollywood, history of Bollywood movie/music or biographies of Bollywood celebrities. However, one can't recollect a book which has been dedicated to themes in Bollywood. For this very thinking, author Tushar A Amin needs a pat on the back because he thinks out of the box (well even if it is primarily from the idea perspective, but more about that later) and brings in something new.
Also, because Tushar is someone who is young, is attached to 'Bollywood today' and comes across more as a 'Bollywood fan' than a historian, it is a reason to feel joyous. After all one has been through with quite a few details around heard-before Bollywood trivia from the past and really, beyond a point it all becomes a boring read to know about the era of 40s, 50s or 60s. In that context, coming in of Tushar is a welcome sign because one expects not just a fresh perspective to the state of affairs but also some good insight into the cinema of last 15-20 years.
Alas, but that happens only in bits and pieces. It's good to see that there are more mentions of the likes of Ranbirs, Priyankas, Imrans, Deepikas and Neils of the world when compared to any other Bollywood book ever released. But then there isn't much to explore if one has been closely following Bollywood in the last 5 years and is aware of all the happenings in their lives due to emergence of tabloid journalism, 100 news channels and 25 internet websites.
'What's new' is what one asks and this is where a big question mark comes in because most of the stuff that Tushar presents in his write ups are something which would be known to a Bollywood follower.
Agreed that for historians it becomes a relatively easier job to dig out trivia due to decades of work behind them. However, from someone who is still active in the world of movies, there was some level of 'inside information' that one would have expected. On the contrary what one gets to see is plain write ups around what the author thinks of these genres/themes. Lack of quotes from any celebrities is still understandable because Tushar perhaps wanted to present an essay of his own. But then it would have been far more exciting had it been sprinkled with more anecdotes, something which the book clearly lacks.
Does that mean that there is nothing at all in the book to be browsed through? No, that's not the case because for an average reader, there is still a lot to read through, especially when the journey involves passing through various themes. So what one gets to read is Tushar's perspective on grandeur in cinema, the essence of love, song & dance routine, rogues, sirens and seductresses, comedy, Bollywood mothers and patriotism in Hindi cinema.
Still, does entire content in this 150 page book (which has more than 50% of it dedicated to pictures) entice a reader enough? Not really. That's because it is kabhi exciting, kabhi lukewarm. Some of the portions in the book really make you hurriedly turn up the pages to know more while at places, you just go through the content which is, to put it mildly, plain boring. For example, the two page write up where Tushar explains 'Bollywood Khan Dance' makes you yawn after a while. Same holds good for some the other 'gyaan' that he shares around 'Cine Maa Recipes'. If humour was the intent here, that doesn't quite come across.
There are a few factual errors which are surprising too. For example, director of 'Jab We Met' is mentioned as Shaad Ali instead of Imtiaz Ali while Akshaye Khanna is referred to as Akshay Khanna and that too not once but actually twice. Also, Amjad Khan has been mentioned as a villain in Yaarana when that was hardly the case as in the film, he had played a positive guy and even won an award for the same.
However, such faux pas is compensated by some excellent layout that the book boasts of. There are hundreds of pictures and quality of each of them is impeccable. The print quality is fantastic while the presentation opulent. Frankly, as a picture book this really excels and would be a delight for those who haven't caught hold of any other Bollywood book (primarily centred on posters) in recent times.

Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 8 May 2010 | 6:51 am Subhash K. Jha speaks about Hai Marjawaan!
As Shakespeare said in another context, this is a grave matter. Gurinder Chadha's newâ¦.err; ghoulish comedy (for the want of a better terminology) is also a gravy matter. Ghouls rise from the dead and mess around with ladles of curries and gravies in what could easily be termed the most messy climax of desi-gone-ballistic-firangi cinema .By the time the masala curries chutneys gravies and other acidic edibles begin to fall across a singing-dancing gathering of NRIs at a big fat Punjabi wedding, the plot is too far gone to be called eccentric or even bizarre.
Hai Marjawaan (It's A Wonder Afterlife) is one those films that should not have happened. It is way too strained in concept and far too outlandish in execution to hold the audiences' interest beyond the first ten minutes when we see the benignly murderous Mrs Sethi (Shabana Azmi, in full-blooded form) surrounded by the ghosts of the people she killed because they wouldn't let their kin be married to her overweight daughter.
The half-dead people in this half-baked attempt to combine spook with satire spend the film's entire playing time counselling and cajoling the harassed Mrs Sethi. Beyond a point watching the murder victims with the murder weapons permanently in place begins to get tedious and nauseous. For how long can we watch a man with chicken curry bursting out of his intestines? Or a woman with rolling-pin sticking out of her head? The ghosts try to be funny. They are just exasperating.
But make no mistake. This film has great redemptive qualities. The romantic lead Sendhil Ramamurthy is certainly not one of them. After the hype about making the ladies swoon Sendhil turns out to be pretty much a ramp-walker on camera adding precious little to a badly-written part. On the other hand his puffed-up soul-mate Goldy Notey as the fat girl with no marriage prospects fills up the screen with her affectionate warmth.
It's Shabana Azmi who finally lifts this creaking protesting piece of zonked-out what-you-may-call-it from the zone of the groan. Infusing an intuitive candour to her eccentric larger-than-life character Shabana lifts almost every sagging scene with her muted empathy towards characters who are incomplete and in substantiated not only because they play ghosts but because they've been written as shadowy figures signifying a genre-breaking defiance rather than any real connect with the British Indian community.
Where are the real warm-hearted character from Bend It Like Beckham in this one? Ironically the most real character in this ode to the spirit of maternal over-protectiveness is a British girl names Linda(played with effective self-irony by Sally Hawkins) .Lately returned from India after a spiritually enlightening experience Linda's passion for Indian spiritualism in many ways defines the Westerner's quest for nirvana that makes them look ridiculous to the outsider.
In many ways the same holds true of the film. It tries so hard to move away from the stereotypes of the diaspora cinema that it ends up entering the territory of the tripped-out. The elements from the dead that pursue the harrowed mom are so baroque in their other-worldliness you wonder how they ever thought they could link themselves to the fate of an unmarried Indian girl.
To compound my eyes I saw It's A Wonderful Afterlife in its weird Hindi dubbed version where the British characters speak Hindi like caricatural Pathani characters in Bollywood films. Whoever advised the director Gurinder Chadha to dub in Hindi is not her friend.
What was she thinking when she embarked on this voyage of the spooks in search of baroque ki manzil?
If you are a diehard Shabana Azmi fan like I am, you could watch this film for the sheer joy of seeing her take over the show without getting in the way of the scary humbug that sticks out of every nook and corner.
But if you are a fan of Gurinder Chadha's work then rent a DVD of Bend It Like Beckham instead.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 8 May 2010 | 6:39 am Shakira top Latina pop starSinger Shakira has been named the most popular Latin musician in the world in a new survey conducted by Nokia’s Ovi Music.Source: | 8 May 2010 | 6:34 am Sounds of the CosmosGerman electronic dance DJs and producers, Cosmic Gate aka Nic Chaggall and Bossi play in Mumbai tonight.Source: | 8 May 2010 | 6:25 am Bollywood singers pay tribute to Naushad AliOn legendary music composer Naushad Ali’s fourth death anniversary, various musicians came forward to pay their tributes at the memorial organised at Bandra on May 5.Source: | 8 May 2010 | 6:20 am Check out: Concept art for Shekhar Kapur's Paani
After impresssing the global audiences with his Hollywood films like Elizabeth and Elizabeth - The Golden Age, the ace director Shekhar Kapur is gung ho about Paani, his latest project which he holds closest to heart.
Not too long ago, the film was in the news as Shekhar has signed on none other than Hrithik Roshan to play the lead role in the film. The concept for the film came from a modest thought when Shekhar witnessed the daily gruelling task of collecting water in Mumbai, five years ago.
Today, with the casting in progress and Shekhar's anxiety bursting, we have the concept art of the film which depicts the 'Lower City parts' in the film. Is there anyone out there who can claim to have not slept for almost 50 hours at a stretch? Well, if happen to be Arshad Warsi, then, you can claim so! The reason? Arshad, who is currently shooting in Goa for Golmaal 3, shot for the movie all night, post that, he caught an early flight to judge the new reality dance show 'Zara Nach Ke Dekha' (ZNKD) and then shoots for it all day long and returns back to Goa for the movie shoot!
The result of which - Arshad was sleepless for almost 50 hours! A source close to Bollywood Hungama revealed, "Arshad has been taking the 6 am flight to Mumbai and shooting for ZNKD all day and night till 5 am and then takes the 6 am flight back to Goa and shoots for Golmaal 3. It gets pretty tiring!"
So is Arshad complaining? The answer is no! Arshad is not at all complaining. It's just that he is just tired by shooting round the clock, but somehow he feels that by the end of the day it gives him a sense of self satisfaction.

Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 8 May 2010 | 5:48 am "I'll be shooting for Don 2 from October" - Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra has signed on enough projects to last her until next year. Says the actress, "I'm listening to several scripts right now. At the moment the last film I've signed is Don 2. I'll be shooting that for 3 ½ months from October."
Priyanka would be doing a lot of exotic stunts in Don 2. "I can't say what kind of stunts. But they are pretty cool. I was looking for that one action flick. I like to try different things in each of my films. After Kaminey, I took on a light romantic film Anjaana Anjaani. Now I'm doing a serious black comedy Saat Khoon Maaf...I always have been adventurous."
She isn't allowed to speak about her role in Saat Khoon Maaf much, except to say she would not be assuming seven different looks in the film. "I'm playing only one character going through seven different experiences. Changing my look for every phase would be gimmicky. I'm working with a team and actors who are brilliant. I'm still trying to figure out the complexities of my character."
Priyanka doesn't see herself as a conventional actress. "I never have walked the conventional path. I've never thought of consequences. Vishal Sir is a director who trusts me implicitly and I know I've to live up to that trust."
In Vishal's earlier film Kaminey, Priyanka had a relatively small role. "But I don't think of my role as big or small. If I've five powerful scenes I'd do it. In Kaminey I had just eight scenes."
She has done the contrasting films Anjaana Anjaani and Saat Khoon Maaf simultaneously. But she doesn't treat them as different genres. "Who's to say which is more commercial? Any film can be a success and if it succeeds it becomes a commercial film. Both Saat Khoon Maaf and Anjaana Anjaani are according to me commercial films."
Says Priyanka, "I'm very content with the space I am in. I started working when I was 18. So I've been able to work with a spectrum of co-stars from Sunny Deol to Shah Rukh Khan to Hrithik Roshan and now Ranbir."
Career-wise Priyanka is a lot more senior than Ranbir. But she doesn't feel it. "He is a film kid. And he knows a lot more about films than I do. He's a brilliant actor and fab co-star. Ranbir is amazing in Anjaana Anjaani He kept me on my toes on camera."
About her recent support for hockey, Priyanka says, "I wanted to promote the national sport. That's why I went. I didn't have to go because India wasn't playing very well. But it was just to show support for the sport."
Priyanka has plans of singing professionally. "But not right away. I don't want to do anything until I am fully ready."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 8 May 2010 | 5:42 am "Naseer plays Surya, the Sun God and the father of Karna" - Prakash Jha
Surya is the Sun God. His followers consider Him to be Brahma in the morning, Vishnu during the day and Shiva at night. He is portrayed sitting on a chariot with seven horses. Surya is pictured with swastika, too, as it is the sign of the sun. Surya represents an independent direction of followers along with the mainstream shakta, shaiva and vaishnava streams. Surya is a Vedic God.
Now you all must be wondering why such a lecture on Surya is being given on a Bollywood portal. Read on! Raajneeti. Rings a bell? The epic, modern day political drama is well inspired by the Mahabharata characters, as we all know by now. Now the question again - Where does Surya fit in? Well, the Sun God is one of the characters in Raajneeti and is portrayed by none other than the maestro himself - Naseeruddin Shah.
Surya is also the father of Karna in the Mahabharata. He conceived him with Kunti, the mother of the eldest three Pandav brothers. And if you must be looking for an answer to the question which goes - Is Naseer saab very much a part of the epic film? The answer would be - Yes, but a cameo. The stalwart received a call from the director Prakash Jha one day while he was conducting some workshop. Prakash Jha quotes, "Yes, I tried to call Naseer but on several occasions, I couldn't get through to him. Then one day, Anjum Rajabali called me and told me that I was dialing the wrong number. I wanted to work with Naseer as I've not worked with him before. And even though the role was small and he only had to give in two days for the shoot for his part, he said 'Yes' without listening to the script."
Jha further quotes, "Naseer didn't even want to read the script after repeated insistence that he should read it. He told me that if the role was small, he didn't want to read it because he trusted my word. As he plays Surya, the Sun God and the father of Karna, if there was one man who could play this part, it only had to be Naseeruddin Shah."
With each passing day, it looks like Raajneeti may well be described in one word 'larger-than-life'.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 8 May 2010 | 5:38 am Abhi’s a Hindi fanAbhishek Bachchan says that it is easier to give the right expression while speaking in Hindi than any other language.Source: | 8 May 2010 | 5:36 am Nominations for IIFA Awards 2010Best Film Vidu Vinod Chopra - 3 Idiots Boney Kapoor - Wanted Anurag Kashyap & Ronnie Screwvala - Dev D Vishal Bharadwaj & Ronnie Screwvala - Kaminey Sunil Manchanda & AB Corp - Paa Best Direction Rajkumar Hirani - 3 Idiots Anurag Kashyap - Dev D Ayan Mukerji - Wake Up Sid Vishal Bharadwaj - Kaminey Imtiaz Ali - Love Aaj Kal R.Balki - Paa Performance in a Leading Role (Male) Aamir Khan - 3 Idiots Amitabh Bachchan - Paa Saif Ali Khan - Love Aaj Kal Salman Khan - Wanted Shahid Kapoor - Kaminey Ranbir Kapoor -Wake Up Sid Performance in a Leading Role (Female) Kareena Kapoor - 3 Idiots Priyanka Chopra - Kaminey Deepika Padukone - Love Aaj Kal Vidya Balan - Paa Mahie Gill - Dev D Performance in Supporting Role (Male) Sharman Joshi - 3 Idiots Irrfan - New York R. Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 7 May 2010 | 8:28 am Raajneeti stars will appear in National Anthem video in cinema halls
When was the last time you stood up in silence with respect? If you want to ponder over this question, I'd suggest you on medication. Here's when. Composed by Rabindranath Tagore, the song 'Jana Gana Mana' was first sung on December 27, 1911 at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress. On January 24, 1950, the Constituent Assembly adopted the song as the National Anthem of India.
So before you munch on your pop-corns and sip your favourite cola, you'd be standing with respect in the cinema hall when the National Anthem is going on. You feel a sudden high, don't you? When you see the soldiers on the Siachen glacier trying hard to hoist the Indian flag. That's the spirit of India and us Indians. We've never backed off, we've always fought hard.
Some cinema halls have shown the entire Marathi television and film personalities coming together and singing the National Anthem in unity.
But come tomorrow, when you are just about to get up and stand in silence with respect before your favourite movie begins, you might just choke. Choke, not because the National Anthem is getting replaced by some other song. No! But because you'll see Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Ajay Devgn, Nana Patekar, Manoj Bajpai and Naseeruddin Shah all sing the National Anthem with humility, respect, honour, courage and patriotism.
Yes, in the words of the originator and the director of the National Anthem video, Mr. Prakash Jha, "Yes, all the actors have sung the National Anthem and it's an honour for me that we've been able to pull this off for Raajneeti. All the cinema halls from this week will be showcasing the Raajneeti cast singing the National Anthem."
Trying to get hold of the cast in this busy Mumbai heat, we got one of the cast members, Manoj Bajpai to comment on this exclusive and innovative idea. He quotes, "Prakash Jha himself has directed the video and it's beautiful. I'm happy and proud that we've done this together. The entire cast has been a part of this patriotic anthem."
With a day left before the entire gang of Raajneeti kick start their promotions, we're sure to be a witness to this grand video shot by this visionary called Prakash Jha.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 7 May 2010 | 8:09 am A Wonderful Afterlife's premiere in Mumbai - Times of India
Source: Entertainment - Google News | 7 May 2010 | 7:07 am Kalki will be seen opposite Prateik in My Friend Pinto
Sometime ago there was speculation that Shraddha Kapoor (daughter of Shakti Kapoor), who made her debut in the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Teen Patti, was to be in the lead role opposite Prateik Babbar, in Sanjay Leela Bhansali production, My Friend Pinto. However, it seems like there has been a change of cast now.
Kalki Koechlin, the seductive Chanda from Dev D, will now be the lead actress My Friend Pinto. Kalki confirmed the news saying, "Yes, I am doing My Friend Pinto. In fact it was director Raghav Dar's idea to cast me in the film, and he was the one who initially recommended me to Sanjay."
She further adds, "Though right now it's still too early to give out much of the film, we will be starting the shoot schedule by this month end. The film is a comedy, and I liked the script as it was quirky and funny and hence I said yes to it."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 7 May 2010 | 6:31 am Why don't Bollywood sci-fi movies work at box office?"Rudraksh", "Alag", "Love Story 2050" and "Prince" - all belong to the sci-fi genre, but the other common factor linking these movies is they were duds at the box office.Source: Entertainment News | 7 May 2010 | 6:07 am "While Monica Cruz is flamenco dancer, I play Bollywood actor" - Nakuul Mehta
Nakuul Mehta, who was last seen in Haal E Dil, is now all set to hit big times, as he has signed a Spanish film opposite none other than...hold your breath... Monica Cruz... the gorgeous sister of Hollywood actress Penelope Cruz!
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, a visibly excited Nakuul said that "The film is called Flamenco In Bollywood, and is a Spanish romantic comedy. The best part was that I just wasn't supposed to be a part of the film! What I really want to thank God for is that despite the fact that I don't have an agent in Hollywood, I still managed to get a role in a film and that too⦠the lead one!" When we probed more, he revealed, "What actually happened was that, the film's director Onil Ganguly Avemore had already auditioned many young Bollywood actors and was on his way back home. And, that's when he saw my film Haal E Dil on the flight (as a part of the in-flight entertainment). He, then, immediately called his casting director for my contact, and the next thing that I knew was that I was doing the film! Till now, I just can't believe my luck."
When asked about the film, as expected, Nakuul was not ready to divulge many details of the film. All that he said was that, "While Monica plays a flamenco dancer; I play the role of a Bollywood actor, with whom she falls in love. The fact also remains that she's totally unaware of the fact that I'm a star. The film, then, deals with me following her back to Spain."
Nakuul added that, "Even though it's a Spanish film, but my character speaks English. Still, I am learning Spanish, even though my role doesn't need that. We will start shooting the film in October in Spain and then, in Mumbai."
Before signing off, Nakuul adds, "I am as excited for this film as much as for my upcoming release titled Avant Garde Pythagoras Sharma. This film will be showcased at European and American film festivals."
Way to go, Nakuul!Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 7 May 2010 | 5:08 am Kajol shoots for Thyroid awareness campaign

Whatever the outcome of the current IPL imbroglio, the game has found one ardent fan in Katrina Kaif who now intends to pursue the game not as a spectator but a player on the field.
Rani Mukherjee played a cricketer in Dil Bole Hadippa. But it's Katrina Kaif who has learnt the ropes of the game, and not for a role. Being a brand ambassador for an IPL team is just not enough for Katrina. She believes she needs to understand the game that she's endorsing and supporting. So Katrina has been taking frantic cricket lessons. Now she's well on the way to getting a hang of the game. Quite efficiently.
Katrina not only learnt the rudiments of the game from Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal she also played cricket with them wearing sarees, if you please!
Says the actress, "What's so tough about playing cricket in a saree? Why do people presume I'm not at home in sarees? I've been wearing them at fashion shows and other events from the time I was a model. And I am comfortable in a saree, even when playing cricket."
It all started in Bhopal where when they were shooting for Raajneeti. The guys in the unit decided to play cricket between shots. Katrina insisted on joining them. Ranbir apparently shooed Katrina away arguing "Chal-chal yeh ladkiyon ke bas ki baat nahin."
It was the matured and kinder Arjun Rampal who insisted that Katrina play with them.
Says Katrina, "Ya, Arjun was very supportive. He not only stood up for me he also taught me elements of the game. Ranbir didn't want me to be part of their cricket team. So I got my own bat and ball and insisted that I be part of the team."
Since a lot of the game was recorded on camera for the film's promotional purposes, the guys often pretended to welcome Katrina in the team.
"But the minute the camera was switched off they sent me off to⦠like a hundred miles away to do fielding. I had to put my down if I wanted to learn the game on the field," she grumbles.
Katrina has returned from Bhopal much more clued into the game.
"Now whenever I'm at the IPL games next, I know what's going on. I don't have to clap and cheer something I don't understand," Katrina rejoices at her newly-discovered love for the game.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 7 May 2010 | 4:55 am Asha Parekh's biggest fan Madhur Bhandarkar breaks down
From carrying video cassettes to his favourite actress' place to actually giving her an award on a public function, Madhur Bhandarkar couldn't digest the reality when he met his idol Asha Parekh.
Sometimes when one comes face to face with one's idol, one doesn't know how to react. So it happened when Madhur Bhandarkar met Asha Parekh at an awards function where Madhur gave the veteran actress an award.
Too timid and "too much of a fan" to express his admiration and love, Madhur couldn't muster the courage to say what he had always wanted to tell his favourite actress. Until he could hold his admiration back no more.
Says Madhur, "I had saved it all up for years. I was and I am Ashaji's biggest fan. I loved every film of hers and would watch Love In Tokyo, Teesri Manzil, Jab Pyar Kissise Hota Hai, Kanyaadan, Kati Patang, Chirag and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki over and over again. When I became an assistant at a video parlour, I made sure I was given the route where Ashaji lived. I told her the exact location and architecture of her bungalow. She has moved. But a part of me still lives in that bungalow."
Madhur remembers he would sneak up to her house and try to peep into her house when the maid would open the door to take the video cassettes.
Recalls Madhur, "I never got a glimpse of my diva. When I came face to face with Ashaji at the awards function my knees trembled and my hands shook. I couldn't speak."
Ashaji smiles when told of her biggest fan's response to being in her presence. "Madhur is a very sweet boy. And a fine filmmaker. I love his movies. He makes such powerful films with women as central characters. He told me about how much I meant to him. I am surprised he still thinks well of me."
Madhur wants to cast his idol in a film. At the moment Ashaji is busy with the first anniversary of her hospital's re-opening on May 9. She plans to meet Madhur after that.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 7 May 2010 | 4:42 am Romantic Europe comes alive through musicThe romance of 19th century Europe came alive here on Thursday evening through the music of immortal composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumman, Johannes Brahms and Richard Strauss.Source: Entertainment News | 7 May 2010 | 4:35 am Imran Khan: The Next Superstar in the Making? - SantaBanta.com
