Raajneeti stars will appear in National Anthem video in cinema halls

Raajneeti When was the last time you stood up in silence with respect? If you want to ponder over this question, I'd suggest you on medication. Here's when. Composed by Rabindranath Tagore, the song 'Jana Gana Mana' was first sung on December 27, 1911 at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress. On January 24, 1950, the Constituent Assembly adopted the song as the National Anthem of India. So before you munch on your pop-corns and sip your favourite cola, you'd be standing with respect in the cinema hall when the National Anthem is going on. You feel a sudden high, don't you? When you see the soldiers on the Siachen glacier trying hard to hoist the Indian flag. That's the spirit of India and us Indians. We've never backed off, we've always fought hard. Some cinema halls have shown the entire Marathi television and film personalities coming together and singing the National Anthem in unity. But come tomorrow, when you are just about to get up and stand in silence with respect before your favourite movie begins, you might just choke. Choke, not because the National Anthem is getting replaced by some other song. No! But because you'll see Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Ajay Devgn, Nana Patekar, Manoj Bajpai and Naseeruddin Shah all sing the National Anthem with humility, respect, honour, courage and patriotism. Yes, in the words of the originator and the director of the National Anthem video, Mr. Prakash Jha, "Yes, all the actors have sung the National Anthem and it's an honour for me that we've been able to pull this off for Raajneeti. All the cinema halls from this week will be showcasing the Raajneeti cast singing the National Anthem." Trying to get hold of the cast in this busy Mumbai heat, we got one of the cast members, Manoj Bajpai to comment on this exclusive and innovative idea. He quotes, "Prakash Jha himself has directed the video and it's beautiful. I'm happy and proud that we've done this together. The entire cast has been a part of this patriotic anthem." With a day left before the entire gang of Raajneeti kick start their promotions, we're sure to be a witness to this grand video shot by this visionary called Prakash Jha.

Kalki will be seen opposite Prateik in My Friend Pinto

Kalki, Prateik Sometime ago there was speculation that Shraddha Kapoor (daughter of Shakti Kapoor), who made her debut in the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Teen Patti, was to be in the lead role opposite Prateik Babbar, in Sanjay Leela Bhansali production, My Friend Pinto. However, it seems like there has been a change of cast now. Kalki Koechlin, the seductive Chanda from Dev D, will now be the lead actress My Friend Pinto. Kalki confirmed the news saying, "Yes, I am doing My Friend Pinto. In fact it was director Raghav Dar's idea to cast me in the film, and he was the one who initially recommended me to Sanjay." She further adds, "Though right now it's still too early to give out much of the film, we will be starting the shoot schedule by this month end. The film is a comedy, and I liked the script as it was quirky and funny and hence I said yes to it."

"While Monica Cruz is flamenco dancer, I play Bollywood actor" - Nakuul Mehta

Nakuul Mehta Nakuul Mehta, who was last seen in Haal E Dil, is now all set to hit big times, as he has signed a Spanish film opposite none other than...hold your breath... Monica Cruz... the gorgeous sister of Hollywood actress Penelope Cruz! Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, a visibly excited Nakuul said that "The film is called Flamenco In Bollywood, and is a Spanish romantic comedy. The best part was that I just wasn't supposed to be a part of the film! What I really want to thank God for is that despite the fact that I don't have an agent in Hollywood, I still managed to get a role in a film and that too… the lead one!" When we probed more, he revealed, "What actually happened was that, the film's director Onil Ganguly Avemore had already auditioned many young Bollywood actors and was on his way back home. And, that's when he saw my film Haal E Dil on the flight (as a part of the in-flight entertainment). He, then, immediately called his casting director for my contact, and the next thing that I knew was that I was doing the film! Till now, I just can't believe my luck." When asked about the film, as expected, Nakuul was not ready to divulge many details of the film. All that he said was that, "While Monica plays a flamenco dancer; I play the role of a Bollywood actor, with whom she falls in love. The fact also remains that she's totally unaware of the fact that I'm a star. The film, then, deals with me following her back to Spain." Nakuul added that, "Even though it's a Spanish film, but my character speaks English. Still, I am learning Spanish, even though my role doesn't need that. We will start shooting the film in October in Spain and then, in Mumbai." Before signing off, Nakuul adds, "I am as excited for this film as much as for my upcoming release titled Avant Garde Pythagoras Sharma. This film will be showcased at European and American film festivals." Way to go, Nakuul!

Katrina Kaif played cricket on Raajneeti sets with her male co-stars

Whatever the outcome of the current IPL imbroglio, the game has found one ardent fan in Katrina Kaif who now intends to pursue the game not as a spectator but a player on the field. Rani Mukherjee played a cricketer in Dil Bole Hadippa. But it's Katrina Kaif who has learnt the ropes of the game, and not for a role. Being a brand ambassador for an IPL team is just not enough for Katrina. She believes she needs to understand the game that she's endorsing and supporting. So Katrina has been taking frantic cricket lessons. Now she's well on the way to getting a hang of the game. Quite efficiently. Katrina not only learnt the rudiments of the game from Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal she also played cricket with them wearing sarees, if you please! Says the actress, "What's so tough about playing cricket in a saree? Why do people presume I'm not at home in sarees? I've been wearing them at fashion shows and other events from the time I was a model. And I am comfortable in a saree, even when playing cricket." It all started in Bhopal where when they were shooting for Raajneeti. The guys in the unit decided to play cricket between shots. Katrina insisted on joining them. Ranbir apparently shooed Katrina away arguing "Chal-chal yeh ladkiyon ke bas ki baat nahin." It was the matured and kinder Arjun Rampal who insisted that Katrina play with them. Says Katrina, "Ya, Arjun was very supportive. He not only stood up for me he also taught me elements of the game. Ranbir didn't want me to be part of their cricket team. So I got my own bat and ball and insisted that I be part of the team." Since a lot of the game was recorded on camera for the film's promotional purposes, the guys often pretended to welcome Katrina in the team. "But the minute the camera was switched off they sent me off to… like a hundred miles away to do fielding. I had to put my down if I wanted to learn the game on the field," she grumbles. Katrina has returned from Bhopal much more clued into the game. "Now whenever I'm at the IPL games next, I know what's going on. I don't have to clap and cheer something I don't understand," Katrina rejoices at her newly-discovered love for the game.

Asha Parekh's biggest fan Madhur Bhandarkar breaks down

Asha Parekh From carrying video cassettes to his favourite actress' place to actually giving her an award on a public function, Madhur Bhandarkar couldn't digest the reality when he met his idol Asha Parekh. Sometimes when one comes face to face with one's idol, one doesn't know how to react. So it happened when Madhur Bhandarkar met Asha Parekh at an awards function where Madhur gave the veteran actress an award. Too timid and "too much of a fan" to express his admiration and love, Madhur couldn't muster the courage to say what he had always wanted to tell his favourite actress. Until he could hold his admiration back no more. Says Madhur, "I had saved it all up for years. I was and I am Ashaji's biggest fan. I loved every film of hers and would watch Love In Tokyo, Teesri Manzil, Jab Pyar Kissise Hota Hai, Kanyaadan, Kati Patang, Chirag and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki over and over again. When I became an assistant at a video parlour, I made sure I was given the route where Ashaji lived. I told her the exact location and architecture of her bungalow. She has moved. But a part of me still lives in that bungalow." Madhur remembers he would sneak up to her house and try to peep into her house when the maid would open the door to take the video cassettes. Recalls Madhur, "I never got a glimpse of my diva. When I came face to face with Ashaji at the awards function my knees trembled and my hands shook. I couldn't speak." Ashaji smiles when told of her biggest fan's response to being in her presence. "Madhur is a very sweet boy. And a fine filmmaker. I love his movies. He makes such powerful films with women as central characters. He told me about how much I meant to him. I am surprised he still thinks well of me." Madhur wants to cast his idol in a film. At the moment Ashaji is busy with the first anniversary of her hospital's re-opening on May 9. She plans to meet Madhur after that.

"I can be casual with Shahid" - Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma Anushka Sharma hasn't changed a bit during last one and a half years. I remember having my first conversation with her a weekend after the release of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. She was unpretentious, sounded like a confident young beautiful girl next door, had a casual tone to her voice and despite having worked with Shah Rukh Khan and delivered a blockbuster-in-the-making, Anushka appeared totally approachable and rather cool about all the attention she was garnering. Few months down the line, she is all set with Badmaash Company. The adjectives surrounding her haven't changed at all till date and what one gets to see is what Anushka truly is. In a really 'speedy conversation' with Joginder Tuteja (yes, Anushka admits that she speaks fasts and assures that the interview will be completed on time despite her choc-b-bloc schedule), the 'badmaash girl' talks about her latest outing. The way I dressed up in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is hardly the way I dress in real life From playing a core 'bhartiya naari' in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi to someone who is cool-n-chic in Badmaash Company- now that's quite some transformation Anushka. On the contrary I would say that if at all there was some transformation, it was in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and not Badmaash Company. I was a model before I started acting and hence I am far more comfortable in the entire attire and styling in case of Badmaash Company. On the other hand the way I dressed up in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is hardly the way I dress in real life. I am much more comfortable in wearing jeans with a top rather than putting on a salwar kameez. I still remember that it was so difficult for me to carrying a dupatta since I wasn't used to it. There had to be 15 pins put together to keep my 'dupatta' in place then (laughs). Anushka Sharma But as an actor, you have gone through some character transformation at least in Badmaash Company. Well, it's because of the nature of the character and the script which has been written by Parmeet (Sethi) due to which the entire transformation aspect is far more visible. Bulbul is extremely different from Taani. I really like Bulbul because she is very straight forward and is totally non pretentious. She is unapologetic and quite sorted out in head at such a young age. She is an independent girl and knows what she wants in life. And also someone who is closer to real life, like? Exactly. People would be able to relate to Bulbul because she is one of them. In fact why just me; every other character would come across quite naturally on screen, more so because all four of us have been inspired from real life. Parmeet has developed his characters by observing a few people whom he has known for years. Naturally, such connections become easy for a character portrayal because there are reference points that audience can draw as well. It falls in the same bracket as Oceans series of Catch Me If You Can But I am sure you would know that you won't be as lucky in each film Anushka. There may be situations when the character offered to you may not be as attached to reality. I won't have any issues playing such character as well as long as the character has some depth at least. Of course I am glad that so far I have got an opportunity to play Taani and Bulbul that are close to real life. But then tomorrow if something really far fetched comes my way which is far more fantastical in nature, I would be happy to play that as well. Anushka Sharma Talking about Badmaash Company, it appears to be one cool caper film with quite some references to a few Hollywood counterparts that belong to similar genre. Well, if you talk about the genre then yes, it falls in the same bracket as Oceans series of Catch Me If You Can. But then just as the scripts of these two films were totally different, Badmaash Company too is entirely different from these Hollywood flicks. Having said that, though Badmaash Company is a caper, it is not just a thriller or only a crime film. The film is fun, funky, highly energetic and as I have said earlier as well, something that one can very easily relate to. Moreover, I think the USP of the film is its freshness. Well, another thing which is quite fresh about the film is your pairing with Shahid. I am sure it would have been fun to be working with someone from your age group in your second film, right? Yes, the fact is that I can afford to be casual when it comes to Shahid as a co-star. He is closer to my age and I can talk about certain things with him which I may not have been comfortable with say Shah Rukh Khan (Rab Ne....) or Akshay Kumar (Patiala House). While with Shahid, I can be on a back slapping relationship, with others there is bound to be some distance due to the respect factor coming in. I can afford to be casual when it comes to Shahid That's true. Having said that, you seem to be doing quite good for yourself within two years of your arrival in Bollywood. Shah Rukh, Akshay and Shahid for your first three films are not a bad deal after all. Yeah, I am lucky that I started off with a big film like Rab Ne.... That indeed helped in a huge reach to begin with itself and more people know me today because of the film's magnitude. If I would have started with a smaller film then may be I would have had to work extra hard to reach where I have today. These two years have indeed been quite eventful.

Vivek Oberoi After the encouraging response to his last release Prince, Vivek Oberoi is back with renewed energy and vigour. After Jai Ho, it's Dhan Dhan Dharti for Gulzar

Gulzar Chalo Colombo. Suddenly Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Ajay Devgn, Arjun Rampal and Manoj Bajpai's jam-packed 7-city global premiere got more crowded. A last-minute premiere at a Bollywood awards function to be held in Colombo (IIFA) has been added to the team's bulging premiere schedule. And Prakash Jha is in a panic. He needs record a patriotic song before Raajneeti goes on its global journey. This is easier said than done. Gulzar's words and Wayne Sharpe's composition are not as easy to coalesce as the poet and A R Rahman's association over 'Jai Ho'. The idea was to find another global catch-phrase to equal the easy reach of 'Jai Ho'. Gulzar's tryst with 'destination' persists. While his 'Jai Ho' is still reverberating across the globe, the poet par excellence has now conceived another patriotic catch- phrase which would hopefully reverberate across the globe with as much intensity as the earlier number. 'Dhan Dhan Dharti' is the title of the patriotic song that Gulzar Saab has written for Raajneeti. The lyrics are at this very moment being composed into music by the American composer Wayne Sharpe who's taken on the daunting task of incorporating the tune for Vande Mataram into Gulzar words. This is the first time in his entire career that Gulzar Saab has collaborated with an international composer. The process is far more complex than it seems. Explains the Raajneeti director Prakash Jha, "We've just taken the basic core notes of Vande Mataram and then built our own patriotic song almost from scratch." The brief to Gulzar Saab and Wayne Sharp was to create the ultimate patriotic song with a global appeal that would usurp 'Jai Ho' from the international charts. Laughs Prakash, "We aren't trying to be one-up on any other song. But the idea was to make the song reflective of the collective Indian psyche." 'Dhan Dhan Dharti' will now be released across the globe in a couple of weeks as soon as the right male voice is chosen to render the number. Prakash Jha says the song is perfect for the late Mohd Rafi. Who fills the lacuna is now being debated.

"I wanted an imperfect Hrithik in Kites" - Anurag Basu

Anurag Basu He has defied both critics and commercial box office to rake in success. He doesn't break the rules just to break the rules. He backs it up because he thinks he can. That's how level headed he is when it comes to direction. He is the new school in the age where old fools still exist in movie making. It is difficult to capture Anurag Basu's presence in print. The last time I met him was at the red carpet world premiere in London's Odeon Leicester Square where his highly acclaimed film Life In A Metro was screened starring the celebrity big brother winner that year, Shilpa Shetty. Almost the who's who of the British Film Industry graced the red carpet. And there was Basu in his loosened denims and a plain black shirt. He doesn't look like those lost out guys who make cinema. He looks like an active and sometimes I guess hyperactive middle aged film geek. Having made some diverse cinema which put him on the ladder of success, Anurag is now on the verge of the most difficult phase in movie making - a phase of path breaking cinema, a phase where he needs to prove his mental strength as a director and a phase that will boost a lot of aspiring filmmakers to make stories where language is no barrier. In short, a phase where Bollywood will be re-written. With a lot of expectations riding high on Kites, UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent met the super talented director over some delicious lunch at TGIF in Andheri to gauge where and at what distance will his most ambitious film Kites reach. Whatever the verdict, Basu is flying high already. Will the Kites fly high come May 21? I am a little nervous guy. I am scared to be confident and a bit over confident. I am always apprehensive before the release of any of my films. The film is just a few weeks away. There is a lot of honesty which has gone in the film. So let's see how high our audiences can take the film when it releases in May. Is the use of Spanish, Hindi and English language in the film makes Kites path breaking? The film just took shape naturally. Initially we thought that the film is targeted to the west but then we found out that love, as the subject in the film, speaks no language. It is universal. There was this Spanish girl, Barbara Mori, who didn't know Hindi and there was Hrithik Roshan who didn't know Spanish. So we didn't force any language on anybody. After seeing seventy percent of the film, my producers, Reliance Big Pictures and Rakesh Roshan thought that the film is path breaking because it will appeal to everybody across the globe. After seeing seventy percent of the film, my producers, Reliance Big Pictures and Rakesh Roshan thought that the film is path breaking Why did a director and producer like Rakesh Roshan opt you to direct Kites when he could've directed the film himself? Till today I have a question in my mind as to why did he take me as a director for Kites? Rakesh Roshan had seen my film Gangster. During that time, Life In A Metro wasn't released. He called me and said, "I've got a story for Hrithik in mind. I want you to direct it." At that time, I said, "No." Knowing Hrithik's star status, I always wondered why would Hrithik do my film. I was a small director who was busy with an ensemble cast film titled Life In A Metro. Plus, I had also heard that he is doing a Raj Kumar Hirani film, Aditya Chopra's film, etc. But Rakesh gave me an idea to work on. Then when I met him at the 2007, IIFA Awards in Yorkshire, he told me, "Have you done something about the idea Anurag?" That's when on the way back to India on the flight I started writing the script. Kites isn't the usual Film Kraft films which we're used to seeing. Hrithik took a walk around his hall and instantly said, 'yes' to the film. What about your like mindedness? Rakesh Roshan and Anurag Basu are two different people. Our tastes, likes and dislikes are different but we shared one thing in common - to make a good and an honest film. I will not say that we had any issues on and off the sets. But we did have arguments regarding the film and arguments are a part of any creative process. That's what makes a good cinema. Anurag Basu Are we going to see a different Hrithik Roshan emerge out of Kites? Yes you are. As an actor, Hrithik has always played difficult characters. He is very natural. He prepares a lot, reads his script, does his rehearsals and then comes on the sets. For this film, I didn't want that. I wanted to throw him in the middle of the sea this time with no preparations. I wanted to see what happens if Hrithik is unprepared. It was very difficult. I wanted an imperfect Hrithik in Kites, and he is very good in that. We had a ball. You'll see a completely new Hrithik in Kites. I wanted an imperfect Hrithik in Kites, and he is very good in that And why a title like Kites for a romantic love story? In the film, I needed some metaphor. The title Kites isn't forced in. There is a saying that kites fly high in the sky, not with the wind but against the wind. Hrithik and Barbara are the kites who are flying high. Their love is unstoppable and they go against the world but there is someone who is controlling these kites. And when they fly too close, there is a risk of losing one. We took the title Kites from one of the dialogues in our film. We took the title Kites from one of the dialogues in our film Are you a changed director after directing Kites? I never change my approach on filmmaking. The budget of Kites is no way nearer the budget of the films I have directed in the past. Kites is a biggie. As far as technology is concerned, yes, I have learnt many things from the film. Like the action sequences and all. I wanted to do such scenes. Also, thanks to Rakesh Roshan, there were no budget constraints in Kites. I am a little spoiled after making Kites (laughs). More than the audiences and the critics, it's the film fraternity who has a huge expectation from Kites. Are you and the cast of your film chewing your finger nails? Everyone associated with the film is tensed right now. We have all challenged ourselves. I have challenged myself by directing a film like Kites, Hrithik has done the same by selecting a different approach to acting, Rakesh Roshan has taken a challenge producing this film and Barbara Mori has taken a huge challenge doing an Indian film. It's a big risk but taken with confidence and courage. Our comfort level is uncomfortable at the moment (laughs). Brief us something about the beautiful Barbara Mori I tell all my actors not to act. I want them to be themselves and their characters in the film. Barbara Mori doesn't act either. She is so natural that you will fall in love with her. She doesn't do any scene or shot if she isn't convinced. She isn't a fake. Anurag Basu How difficult was it to converse with Barbara Mori? People from the West have their agents and all coming in the way of narration. So when I went to narrate Barbara the script in Los Angeles, I wanted to do it in the traditional Bollywood way. I narrated her the story with my bad Hindi accent mixed with English. But her English was worse than mine (laughs). While looking at her while narrating, I thought she is the best choice for Kites and she said a 'yes' immediately after the narration was complete. She had seen my film Gangster before our narration. Barbara is so natural that you will fall in love with her How does Hrithik communicate with his director? We want to know. He comes to the set and hands over himself to the director. Nobody knows this but there is a director in Hrithik's mind. He can sense the whole film. Most of our actors in the industry have got a selfish approach. But Hrithik thinks about the film as a whole. On the second day of the shoot, I briefed Hrithik on how he should act in that scene but missed out small details. When I took the shot, I noticed that he had done exactly what I had missed out while briefing him. That is Hrithik Roshan for you. And we hear that you are a sound person too? (Laughs) Yes. I write with a sense of music in my mind. I have all my temporary tracks with me when I go to shoot. I can't write or function if my I-Pod isn't glued to my ears. I can never do without songs. I hate lip-syncs songs.
