After Jai Ho, it's Dhan Dhan Dharti for Gulzar

Gulzar Chalo Colombo. Suddenly Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Ajay Devgn, Arjun Rampal and Manoj Bajpai's jam-packed 7-city global premiere got more crowded. A last-minute premiere at a Bollywood awards function to be held in Colombo (IIFA) has been added to the team's bulging premiere schedule. And Prakash Jha is in a panic. He needs record a patriotic song before Raajneeti goes on its global journey. This is easier said than done. Gulzar's words and Wayne Sharpe's composition are not as easy to coalesce as the poet and A R Rahman's association over 'Jai Ho'. The idea was to find another global catch-phrase to equal the easy reach of 'Jai Ho'. Gulzar's tryst with 'destination' persists. While his 'Jai Ho' is still reverberating across the globe, the poet par excellence has now conceived another patriotic catch- phrase which would hopefully reverberate across the globe with as much intensity as the earlier number. 'Dhan Dhan Dharti' is the title of the patriotic song that Gulzar Saab has written for Raajneeti. The lyrics are at this very moment being composed into music by the American composer Wayne Sharpe who's taken on the daunting task of incorporating the tune for Vande Mataram into Gulzar words. This is the first time in his entire career that Gulzar Saab has collaborated with an international composer. The process is far more complex than it seems. Explains the Raajneeti director Prakash Jha, "We've just taken the basic core notes of Vande Mataram and then built our own patriotic song almost from scratch." The brief to Gulzar Saab and Wayne Sharp was to create the ultimate patriotic song with a global appeal that would usurp 'Jai Ho' from the international charts. Laughs Prakash, "We aren't trying to be one-up on any other song. But the idea was to make the song reflective of the collective Indian psyche." 'Dhan Dhan Dharti' will now be released across the globe in a couple of weeks as soon as the right male voice is chosen to render the number. Prakash Jha says the song is perfect for the late Mohd Rafi. Who fills the lacuna is now being debated.

"I wanted an imperfect Hrithik in Kites" - Anurag Basu

Anurag Basu He has defied both critics and commercial box office to rake in success. He doesn't break the rules just to break the rules. He backs it up because he thinks he can. That's how level headed he is when it comes to direction. He is the new school in the age where old fools still exist in movie making. It is difficult to capture Anurag Basu's presence in print. The last time I met him was at the red carpet world premiere in London's Odeon Leicester Square where his highly acclaimed film Life In A Metro was screened starring the celebrity big brother winner that year, Shilpa Shetty. Almost the who's who of the British Film Industry graced the red carpet. And there was Basu in his loosened denims and a plain black shirt. He doesn't look like those lost out guys who make cinema. He looks like an active and sometimes I guess hyperactive middle aged film geek. Having made some diverse cinema which put him on the ladder of success, Anurag is now on the verge of the most difficult phase in movie making - a phase of path breaking cinema, a phase where he needs to prove his mental strength as a director and a phase that will boost a lot of aspiring filmmakers to make stories where language is no barrier. In short, a phase where Bollywood will be re-written. With a lot of expectations riding high on Kites, UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent met the super talented director over some delicious lunch at TGIF in Andheri to gauge where and at what distance will his most ambitious film Kites reach. Whatever the verdict, Basu is flying high already. Will the Kites fly high come May 21? I am a little nervous guy. I am scared to be confident and a bit over confident. I am always apprehensive before the release of any of my films. The film is just a few weeks away. There is a lot of honesty which has gone in the film. So let's see how high our audiences can take the film when it releases in May. Is the use of Spanish, Hindi and English language in the film makes Kites path breaking? The film just took shape naturally. Initially we thought that the film is targeted to the west but then we found out that love, as the subject in the film, speaks no language. It is universal. There was this Spanish girl, Barbara Mori, who didn't know Hindi and there was Hrithik Roshan who didn't know Spanish. So we didn't force any language on anybody. After seeing seventy percent of the film, my producers, Reliance Big Pictures and Rakesh Roshan thought that the film is path breaking because it will appeal to everybody across the globe. After seeing seventy percent of the film, my producers, Reliance Big Pictures and Rakesh Roshan thought that the film is path breaking Why did a director and producer like Rakesh Roshan opt you to direct Kites when he could've directed the film himself? Till today I have a question in my mind as to why did he take me as a director for Kites? Rakesh Roshan had seen my film Gangster. During that time, Life In A Metro wasn't released. He called me and said, "I've got a story for Hrithik in mind. I want you to direct it." At that time, I said, "No." Knowing Hrithik's star status, I always wondered why would Hrithik do my film. I was a small director who was busy with an ensemble cast film titled Life In A Metro. Plus, I had also heard that he is doing a Raj Kumar Hirani film, Aditya Chopra's film, etc. But Rakesh gave me an idea to work on. Then when I met him at the 2007, IIFA Awards in Yorkshire, he told me, "Have you done something about the idea Anurag?" That's when on the way back to India on the flight I started writing the script. Kites isn't the usual Film Kraft films which we're used to seeing. Hrithik took a walk around his hall and instantly said, 'yes' to the film. What about your like mindedness? Rakesh Roshan and Anurag Basu are two different people. Our tastes, likes and dislikes are different but we shared one thing in common - to make a good and an honest film. I will not say that we had any issues on and off the sets. But we did have arguments regarding the film and arguments are a part of any creative process. That's what makes a good cinema. Anurag Basu Are we going to see a different Hrithik Roshan emerge out of Kites? Yes you are. As an actor, Hrithik has always played difficult characters. He is very natural. He prepares a lot, reads his script, does his rehearsals and then comes on the sets. For this film, I didn't want that. I wanted to throw him in the middle of the sea this time with no preparations. I wanted to see what happens if Hrithik is unprepared. It was very difficult. I wanted an imperfect Hrithik in Kites, and he is very good in that. We had a ball. You'll see a completely new Hrithik in Kites. I wanted an imperfect Hrithik in Kites, and he is very good in that And why a title like Kites for a romantic love story? In the film, I needed some metaphor. The title Kites isn't forced in. There is a saying that kites fly high in the sky, not with the wind but against the wind. Hrithik and Barbara are the kites who are flying high. Their love is unstoppable and they go against the world but there is someone who is controlling these kites. And when they fly too close, there is a risk of losing one. We took the title Kites from one of the dialogues in our film. We took the title Kites from one of the dialogues in our film Are you a changed director after directing Kites? I never change my approach on filmmaking. The budget of Kites is no way nearer the budget of the films I have directed in the past. Kites is a biggie. As far as technology is concerned, yes, I have learnt many things from the film. Like the action sequences and all. I wanted to do such scenes. Also, thanks to Rakesh Roshan, there were no budget constraints in Kites. I am a little spoiled after making Kites (laughs). More than the audiences and the critics, it's the film fraternity who has a huge expectation from Kites. Are you and the cast of your film chewing your finger nails? Everyone associated with the film is tensed right now. We have all challenged ourselves. I have challenged myself by directing a film like Kites, Hrithik has done the same by selecting a different approach to acting, Rakesh Roshan has taken a challenge producing this film and Barbara Mori has taken a huge challenge doing an Indian film. It's a big risk but taken with confidence and courage. Our comfort level is uncomfortable at the moment (laughs). Brief us something about the beautiful Barbara Mori I tell all my actors not to act. I want them to be themselves and their characters in the film. Barbara Mori doesn't act either. She is so natural that you will fall in love with her. She doesn't do any scene or shot if she isn't convinced. She isn't a fake. Anurag Basu How difficult was it to converse with Barbara Mori? People from the West have their agents and all coming in the way of narration. So when I went to narrate Barbara the script in Los Angeles, I wanted to do it in the traditional Bollywood way. I narrated her the story with my bad Hindi accent mixed with English. But her English was worse than mine (laughs). While looking at her while narrating, I thought she is the best choice for Kites and she said a 'yes' immediately after the narration was complete. She had seen my film Gangster before our narration. Barbara is so natural that you will fall in love with her How does Hrithik communicate with his director? We want to know. He comes to the set and hands over himself to the director. Nobody knows this but there is a director in Hrithik's mind. He can sense the whole film. Most of our actors in the industry have got a selfish approach. But Hrithik thinks about the film as a whole. On the second day of the shoot, I briefed Hrithik on how he should act in that scene but missed out small details. When I took the shot, I noticed that he had done exactly what I had missed out while briefing him. That is Hrithik Roshan for you. And we hear that you are a sound person too? (Laughs) Yes. I write with a sense of music in my mind. I have all my temporary tracks with me when I go to shoot. I can't write or function if my I-Pod isn't glued to my ears. I can never do without songs. I hate lip-syncs songs.

Boney Kapoor to direct film, but it won't star Sridevi

Boney Kapoor After years into the movie business as one of Bollywood's primary producers, Boney Kapoor is finally taking the plunge as a director. The project is likely to feature a bevy of top notch actors including of course Salman Khan. But sorry to disappoint Sridevi's fans Boney won't be directing his mesmeric wife, at least not in his directorial debut. Says Boney, "It's too much of a responsibility, too much stress, and to do justice to Sri in my first film as a director would be really tough. We can't separate our personal equation and become professionals on the sets. So no, I'm not directing Sri in my first film." Boney reveals that he was meant to direct Sridevi in a remake of Chris Columbus' Stepmom some years ago. "I wanted to cast Sri and Kajol as the older and younger women. I had even spoken to Kajol who's a big favourite of mine, about it. But look at the irony of it. Kajol is now playing the older woman and Bebo (Kareena) the younger in Karan Johar's adaptation Of Stepmom." Expressing regret that he missed out on the opportunity earlier, Boney is now all set to rectify the situation. Says Boney, "It's about time I took the plunge, and I am going to. Not too many people know I was an assistant director with Shakti Samanta on four movies Mehbooba, Anand Ashram, The Great Gambler and (the unreleased) Maha Guru. I guess it was inevitable for me to finally go into direction." The details for Boney's directorial debut are being worked out. He hopes to clear the decks of his production work before taking the plunge early next year.

Karan Johar gets hate mail for supporting Housefull

Karan Johar Karan Johar has always been known to be generous towards his colleagues' works, unless the colleague happens to be Ram Gopal Varma. Little did he know that a harmless and warm congratulatory tweet to his friends Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Arjun Rampal, Deepika Padukone and Lara Dutta for their film Housefull would spark off a series of nasty comments barbs and innuendos from across the world. Baffled and amused, Karan spoke from New York to say, "I normally wish all the best for all my colleagues and their work, both to the people and involved and on public platforms. In fact just some time after I wished the team of Housefull I also said good things about my friend Gurinder Chadha's new film It's A Wonderful Afterlife. No one seemed to mind that." From the minute that Karan tweeted about Housefull, his email, phone and SMS have been swamped by indignant angry and abusive responses. Says Karan, "I know it's free world. But it doesn't mean people can say whatever they like. Many of the messages are downright abusive. I've praised so many films. But I didn't even praise Housefull. I just congratulated the team. And I started getting abusive messages asking how I could support a film like this. Arrey, what I choose to support or not support is entirely my prerogative." Karan is clueless about what could've triggered off this reaction. Housefull producer Sajid Nadiadwala says he's aware of the backlash on the internet. "Not only Karan Johar, even my friend Salman Khan tweeted about Housefull. While no one has any unkind thing to say about the film in print or on television, on the internet it's a different matter. This is why I say, stay away from social network when it comes to my film." Unluckily for Nadiadwala almost all the members of his Housefull cast are on Twitter. Says the harried producer, "They are all so active on Twitter, it's scary. If you notice all the major troubles in our country lately, including the IPL scandal have started on Twitter. That's why I've put a non-disclosure agreement on people working in my films." The next step for Sajid Nadiadwala is to ask his actors and technicians to stay off the social networks on websites as long as they are working in his films. Says Sajid, "I cannot by contract persuade them to stay off social networking websites. But I can request them to do so." As for Karan Johar's growing avalanche of hate mail for supporting Housefull, Karan says, "I don't care what's tweeted against me. It won't stop me from supporting my friends' films."

Salman Khan chosen as brand ambassador for Ching's Secret noodles?

Salman Khan Bollywood never had it so good. Gone are the days when the hunky-dory models and good looking 'models' were a salable hot property in the glitzy world of advertising and commercials. The current trend has seen these professional models being replaced by either cricketers or films stars. If Bollywood Hungama's sources are to be believed, then, the news is that superstar Salman Khan has been chosen as the brand ambassador for Ching's Secret noodles, for an undisclosed but astronomical sum of money. While Salman Khan will be busy promoting the said brand, readers may recall ('the irony', for obvious reasons) that it was SRK, who was promoting pasta of yet another leading brand Sunfeast. Now, it is to be seen if Salman manages to rub his magic on the sales registers of the said brand.

Big B, Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt in Raj Kumar Santoshi's action film

Raj Kumar Santoshi Two of our busiest stars Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn have agreed to be part of a hurriedly-designed mega-project, only because Amitabh Bachchan plays the lead. Raj Kumar Santoshi's The Outsider with Amitabh Bachchan has been temporarily postponed for the lack of proper permission to shoot in the US where it was situated. Rather than allow the Big B's dates to go to waste, Raj Santoshi has moved to another crime thriller for the same producer Feroze Nadiadwala. This crime thriller will also feature Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt in stellar roles and would be shot both in India and abroad. Devgn and Dutt both extremely busy stars in their own right agreed to be part of the project at such short notice because of the Big B's presence. Devgn and Dutt gave the project a nod without even hearing the script when they were told it was the Big B playing the main lead. Neither of the two stars showed any hesitation in saying yes at the last minute. Explaining the overnight shift in plot location and project, Santoshi says, "The other project The Outsider was not working out on time. It has become very difficult for Indian filmmakers to shoot in the US. Rather than allow the dates to go to waste I put forward the new project. It's a thriller about a vigilante. And yes Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt are also part of the project." The shooting starts in the next couple of months to coincide with the dates that the Big B had allotted for the other project. Says Santoshi, "It's an out-and-out action film. Mr Bachchan plays a vigilante. Ajay and Sanjay Dutt also have very powerful parts." This is the first time Santoshi would be working with Sanjay Dutt . They were to collaborate on a historical about the Partition. But period films are pretty much a no-no at the box-office. Says Santoshi, "The responsibility of doing justice to Mr. Bachchan and Ajay whom I've worked with earlier and Sanjay Dutt whom I'm working with for the first time, is the same." Surprisingly, Santoshi's one-time favourite action-star Sunny Deol doesn't feature in the cast although Deol has shown interest in getting back together with Santoshi. Reacting to Deol's cynical observation that Santoshi is allowing the market to dictate to his creativity. Santoshi says, "The market does dictate the films I do. It's a reality .And we must all face it." Adds producer Feroz Nadiadwala, "We'll be shooting the film in India and Dubai. Mr. Bachchan will be seen as a master of disguises. For his special disguise we're getting makeup persons from Hollywood. And he'll be performing stunts like we've never seen him perform. We're getting stunt co-ordinators from some of the top names who have done the action in A-grade Hollywood films recently. I can't reveal names of the stunt guys and the makeup guys from Hollywood because we're under negotiation. And you've to hear the dialogues Raj Santoshi has written for Mr. Bachchan. They're the best I've heard since Deewaar." About Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn the producer says, "When it's a writer-director of Raj Santoshi's calibre, he'll make sure he does justice to actors of Sanjay and Ajay's calibre."

Madhur Bhandarkar turns actor, features in Smita Thackeray's Society

Madhur Bhandarkar Madhur Bhandarkar has turned actor. And he was teased mercilessly by his co-stars Dimple Kapadia and Sarika who ganged up against poor Madhur for as long as he shot. Agreed he did walk-on parts in Ram Gopal Varma's Rangeela and his own film Fashion. But in Rahul Dholakia's Society, for the time Madhur has a clearly-etched part with a character who speaks lines. Madhur who shot for the film on Tuesday, says it was on producer Smita Thackeray's insistence. "My first reaction was to refuse. I can't act! But nobody says no to Smitaji. Besides, she told me I had to play myself. Also the director Rahul Dholakia is a dear friend. I really liked his work in Parzania." But it was the cast that finally clinched it for Madhur. "When I heard I had scenes with Om Puriji, Dimple Kapadiaji, Sarikaji and Seema Biswaji I felt I had reached heaven. I mean...my god! These are stalwarts I grew up worshipping and watching. I never thought I'd be acting with them one day." Madhur plays himself, the director Madhur Bhandarkar, who comes to the housing society to research on a film he's making on the water scarcity in Mumbai. The fun part was the endless ribbing Madhur underwent in the hands of the playful duo Dimple Kapadia and Sarika. "They insisted on running to the monitor to watch my shots and comment on them. It was like a dream come true to be working in front of the camera with these two beautiful actresses," says Madhur. And now Madhur wants to cast Dimple and Sarika in his next film, a romantic comedy which he is going to start in July ahead of the film he plans to make with Kareena Kapoor in September. Quips Madhur, "I had a walk-on parts in Rangeela and Fashion. Both were hits. I hope I prove the lucky mascot in Society. Then I can start charging money for my screen appearances."

"In Raavan we have used a lot of African vocals and sounds" - A.R.Rahman

A R Rahman He is a man of few words yet his music does all the talking. Directors from Bollywood as well as Hollywood wish to have him compose music for their films yet his super-busy schedule allows him to green-light only a handful of projects. Over the last couple of years, he has bagged every possible award from the Padma Bhushan to the BAFTA's and the Grammy to the Oscars yet he remains as humble as ever. Last week he once again gave his millions of fans a reason to cheer in the form of the spectacular musical score of Raavan. He is none other than Allah Rakha Rahman- the man who eats, breathes and (whenever he) sleeps music. Bollywood Hungama's Nikhil Ramsubramaniam caught up with the Musical Maestro for an exclusive interview to talk about the experience of composing music for Raavan, his special bonding with Mani Ratnam, his much talked about world tour and much more. Read on... 18 years after debuting with Mani Ratnam's Roja, you are back once again with Mani for Raavan. How has the journey been? It's all been very good and exciting. The thing with Mani is that he receives every idea with great respect. It's not just the usual "Give me 5 tunes for my film" We try to explore various avenues while composing the music in the interest of the film. In spite of your super-busy schedule you always manage to take out time for a Mani Ratnam project. You have composed music for all his films. What is it about Mani that makes it difficult for you to say 'No' to him? After a point I think you understand exactly what a person needs and what is it that he actually wants. It's pretty much the case between Mani and I. However having said that, getting such vibes and sharing such a comfort level with someone is easier said than done. By the grace of God we've pulled it so far and continue to do so in the future (smiles). In case of Raavan, we have used a lot of African vocals and sounds in some of the songs keeping with the mood and theme of the film The one word synonymous with your music is Experimentation. So what kind of experimentation have you tried in Raavan? I don't think in terms of experimentation in each project that I do. I just go with a theme that will make the project sound exciting. In case of Raavan, we have used a lot of African vocals and sounds in some of the songs keeping with the mood and theme of the film. The music of Raavan released last amidst much fanfare. There are 6 tracks in the album. Could you take us through each of the tracks in your own words and explain the essence of songs... When we set out to compose 'Beera Beera', we didn't want to make the song or the character seem dark. We wanted 'Beera' to be liked by everyone 'Beera Beera' 'Beera' is a song that describes the lead character played by Abhishek Bachchan. When we set out to compose this song, we didn't want to make the song or the character seem dark. We wanted 'Beera' to be liked by everyone. He is someone who has a point of view, it may be wrong according to some sections of the society but when you see the film you will realize his justification for the same. The song is like a celebration of his character. 'Behne De' Karthik sang this song as a scratch. At that point in time, we didn't know if we were going to retain it but everyone seemed to like the version and we did retain it. We also added some background vocals by Mohammed Irfan to give a different edge to the song. It's not your usual typical song. There is a different version of Ranjha Ranjha sung by Ila Arun and Richa Sharma that features in the film 'Ranjha Ranjha' 'Ranjha Ranjha' is an idea that I had done earlier but gave it a skip. It's poetry of Baba Bulleshah. Though the song that you hear in the album (sung by Rekha Bhardwaj, Javed Ali and Anuradha Sriram) doesn't feature in the movie, we have created another version of the song that is sung by Ila Arun and Richa Sharma which would be featured in the film. This version has been shot beautifully and works better for the film. 'Thok De Khilli' 'Thok De Khilli' of course has Sukhwinder at his energetic best. He is simply a powerhouse of energy and talent. However, in this song he didn't get a chance to improvise a lot as he had to fit his vocals to match the form of the song. In spite of that he has done a fabulous job A R Rahman 'Kata Kata' 'Kata Kata' is a very typical Mani Ratnam style song. In every film of his you have this folk celebration kind of song like you had 'Chalka Chalka Re' in Saathiya or for that matter 'Rukmani Rukmani' in Roja. However, this time we have given it a different feel and it was really an enjoyable process composing this track 'Khilli Re' 'Khilli Re' has been sung by Reena Bhardwaj who earlier sang 'Yeh Rishta' from Meenaxi. She has got a beautiful voice which suited the song perfectly. She is a very talented singer who certainly deserves more opportunities in the future. During the music launch you also surprised everyone by composing and singing a new additional song 'Jaa Re Udd Jaa Re'. Is that song going to be added later in the album or featured in the film? The song was a very last minute addition. I saw the movie and felt like adding a song to a particular situation in the film. The lyrics of the song were ready for a while however I had to yet compose the tune. Meanwhile we had already planned our music release for the 24th of April so we didn't want to delay or postpone that because of one song. The song may be later added to the album; however it would feature in the film. There is a certain kind of affinity that Gulzar saab has for Mani and me. When he works with us, he is always very happy. I think when you are happy working as a team, it shows on the result of the end product In every album of yours a striking aspect is zeroing in on the right singers for the right song. How do you manage to do that? Well...to be honest, I don't know (smiles). Most of the time, it's not planned. I just look at who would suit the song and more importantly who is available at that point of time. So do you have multiple singers recording scratch versions and then you taking a call on whom to consider for the final version? Well... No we don't actually do that. Usually its just one or two times that we rehearse the song before recording except for directors like Abbas Tyrewala who is very particular about getting the right voice. Most of his songs are recorded about 6 - 7 times (smiles) In Raavan, you once again re-unite with Gulzar saab after the Oscar winning score in Slumdog Millionaire. How is it working with him time and again? There is a certain kind of affinity that Gulzar saab has for Mani and me. When he works with us, he is always very happy. I think when you are happy working as a team, it shows on the result of the end product. I am really excited about the world tour as its going to have some really spectacular and different production values In June, you embark on your world tour called The A.R.Rahman Jai Ho Concert...The Journey Home. Tell us something about that and why is it called 'The Journey Home' It's called The Journey Home because even though it's a World Tour, it's going to feature a repertoire of songs from my 18 year old career. We are not going to go with the obvious way of mainly performing English songs just because it's a world tour. I am really excited about the tour as its going to have some really spectacular and different production values. A lot of money has gone into that and a lot of Western artists have been working on giving the tour a whole new feel. The show is also directed very differently giving a whole new perspective to my music and to our country. So who are the singers who are going to be a part of this tour? There is Hariharan, Javed Ali, Shweta Pandit, Benny Dayal, Blaaze besides my usual troupe comprising of Sivamani on percussion, Naveen on the flute etc. Over the last couple of years Rahmania has reached an all time high with you bagging the BAFTA's, the Golden Globes, the Oscars and the Grammys. Closer home there were awards like the Padma Bhushan, Indian Of The Year etc. Is there a special section where you keep all your awards? There is a place in the office for them but once you get an award it's a thing of the past. You just keep marching on and look forward to the future A R Rahman Now that the music of Raavan has released, what are your future projects? After Raavan, there is a Telugu film called Puli. Then there is Shankar's Robot and Abbas Tyrewala's 1-800 Love. Are you also composing the music for Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar? Yes...we've just started. In fact we just finished out first sitting. It's a great experience working with a team comprising Irshad Kamil and Imtiaz Ali. After Raavan, there is a Telugu film Puli, and then there is Robot, 1-800 Love and Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar How is your pet project KM Music Conservatory doing? It's doing really well. We just signed up with Middlesex University to oversee the whole education. We are expanding and going to a larger campus very soon. Finally we know that you listen to all kinds of music. So what's currently playing on your iPod? Well...I've been listening to Susan Boyle's album, Kumar Gandharva's songs and Coldplay. Besides I am always listening to my songs while mixing (smiles).

"I would want sequel of Singh is Kinng to do much better" - Anees Bazmee

Anees Bazmee When Singh Is Kinng was approaching it's release date, there was a definite buzz in the air that this Akshay Kumar starrer would be seeing a sequel soon after. However, immediately after the release (and success) of Singh Is Kinng, there were murmurs that all was not well between the film's producer Vipul Shah and director Anees Bazmee. Both being established filmmakers in their own right, they had their own take on affairs as far as visibility and popularity post the film's release was concerned. It was said that ego issues had cropped up between the two men and though on the face value they didn't quite (thankfully) wash the dirty linen in public, there certainly were rumours about tension brewing between the two. Meanwhile, everyone associated with Singh Is Kinng moved on with their respective projects in months to come. While the idea for the sequel never died down, there was no concrete progress being made. In fact it was also being said that there was no real work being done on even the scripting of the sequel and the much cherished project, which was bound to be accepted with open arms by the audience, had taken a firm backseat. As Vipul Shah got busy with London Dreams, Akshay Kumar moved on to his half a dozen other projects and Anees Bazmee too kick started work on No Problem. This led to speculation that Singh Is Kinng 2 was going to be the story of the past. Now this was quite disheartening for audience as well as industry because in a recession hit situation where a safe project is hard to come by, revival of Singh Is Kinng series could well have been a huge shot in the arm. When questioned if there was any progress being made on the sequel, Anees Bazmee confirms that no one has approached him to yet to direct the sequel. However, in his heart he is sure that he just needs an indication and he would be all game to begin work on the film. Anees Bazmee "Would I love to direct the sequel? Oh, of course yes. After all these were the characters thought by me and I am very attached to them. There could be so many ways to take these characters forward", continues Anees for whom Singh Is Kinng stays on to be one of his three biggest blockbusters other than Welcome and No Entry. Since Anees has his bag full currently, what if Vipul goes ahead and either directs the film himself or rope in some other director? Won't it be a setback of sorts for him since it is basically his own baby that would be handed over to someone else? "You can be attached to a film but not to this extent that you can't see someone else taking care of it", Anees doesn't allow any hint of emotion coming on his face, "I won't feel bad if he or someone else directs the film. Its okay, one moves on. Yeh meri jageer thodi hi hai ki main usse apna maan ke jaane hi naa doon!" By this time around one can well sense that Anees Bazmee is trying hard to camouflage his emotions. Though he is keeping a tough stand on the exterior, one can sense that he does carry a soft corner for the film. This is the reason why he only wishes the film good luck rather being nonchalant about it. "No, I won't say that I have nothing to do with the film because the fact is that I have a lot to do with it. So even if someone else directs the film, my best wishes would be with him. Let me state this from the bottom of my heart that I would actually want the sequel to do much better business than the first in the series and turn out to be a much bigger hit", says Anees with a smile. Extending on his logic behind allowing himself to disconnect from the film, Anees says, "See, the matter of the fact is that I got my money for making Singh Is Kinng. That was my job as a writer-director and I gave my all to ensure that I justify decision of the producer to have roped me in. As a producer, Vipulji is great. Main dil se dua karoonga ki picture chale because kahin na kahin mera naam bhi film ke saath juda hua hai.
